CCP says no. Most people say yes. ---

In fact, it's standard practice to start training some skill that will take as long as possible (Dreadnought 5?) right before cancelling. That way, if you come back three months later, it wasn't all wasted. ________________________________________________

It's definately a yes. I've used it a few times on my 2nd account. I play that account with timecards. If the timecard is about to run out i change to one of the longer skills i want to train and re-activate the account once the skill is done. Works like a charm and saves me some days for which i don't need a timecard (and time = isk )

April 2nd m account was going to expire. I was kind of stuck in the game, doing nothing but missions, getting tired of the game. Decided to train Cruiser 5 which would take a month for me, and quit. Reactivated on the first to see I only have 22 hours (from the time of this posting) left on it.
I plan to use this again for Batttlecruiser 5.

I think CCP will probably be closing this little "loophole", since it is obviously being abused.
Why should people be able to abuse this to skill up characters without paying for it?

Why? Sure they aren't paying while they skill up, however they're not advancing in every other aspect of game play.

They probably leave it this way as an incentive for people who quit the game to return later. They might think about coming back if their battleship had gone to 5 versus coming back to the exact same situation they left behind.

Yes it does. I cancel my accounts every so often and before I do that, I set a nice level 5 skill. I have too many level 5 skills coming out of my pants now.

Exactly. I see no reason why CCP should ever change this. If someone quits, they lose the subscription money. Whether or not a skill continues to train is irrelevant. But if that person knows they can come back to a completed skill, then it's more money for CCP and a happy returning customer. Win-Win.

Answer: Yes
Does CCP care? I doubt it - if you were going on holiday for a month you may switch to BS5 and cancel - but this depends on billing cycles matching up, and is a hassle.
I doubt many people do it. I found one of my accounts unsubbed the other day (new cc, old one expired) and as luck would have it I've just started heavy drones 5 - a good 25 days.
It took me all of 5 mins to decide to re-sub instantly, the lost play time just isn't worth it.
