With wednesdays extended downtime, now is the time to start planning your skill training agenda for the comming week.
CCP has told us it will take atleast 12hours but me always being the pesimest like to figure longer than that.
You know that skill you have been puttiong off because it has a 29day training time? Use it!
Why you say? Its simple: Murphy's Law!
Worse case senario... Database/hardware move doesn't go quite as planned, instead of taking 12 hours it takes 14 - 16 hours. Then the real fun begins. Shortly after bringing the servers back online users are being kicked from the game for god only knows what reason. So CCP decides to switch back to the old hardware/software. But guess what it did not go smoothly either and takes another 2 hours to fix. Mean while others are looking at the new hardware to figure out what the F is going on. Couple hours later they bring the new hardware back online..but still have the same problems. Rinse and repeat.
My estimate for absolute worse case would be the inability to change your skills for 4 days (Don't think it has ever happened). If you plan that way you will never get caught without a skill being trained on patch days.

I'll probably pop on Mechanic 5 so I can train Assault Frigs and use T2 Large Reps.

As usual, I will allow my current skill to finish seconds before downtime, then realise the clock is wrong or something and agonise over lost hours.

I'd plan for days of instability. SQL Server 2005 is a buggy POS. Why CCP is downgrading to it is beyond me.

As Oveur stated in the news item, the hardware went through rigorous internal testing before being sent to the server facilities in London. I forsee another deployment like the earlier hardware upgrade, rather than the deployment we faced with the Bloodlines update. However, train a skill that will complete training no earlier than 8 hours after the estimated return to service, just to be safe.

The hardware is more than capable. That's not the issue. It's SQL Server 2005. It's notoriously buggy, bloated and difficult to migrate to.

Hehe Now Kieron don't get me wrong. I have every confidence in the abilities of the CCP Geek Staff  It is however Mr Murphy that I do not trust. An 8hr post uptime estimate is probably more realistic, but like I stated I am a pesimist.
The real question will be how many of the "Ugg I can not log on to change my skills" post can be overted by taking my advice.

Patches get alotta testing too, and 9 out of 10 times it didnt went as planned. The threadstarter has a point. IF it doesnt all go well, you will be glad you got a skill covering the few days after as well.

It would be so awesome if someone actually checked those "SP Done" and found them to not fit with the time left, and then yell at you..

I hear Mr. Murphy has good lawyers, the I cant Believe it's a Law Firm Lawyers are tough, frankly I was thinking of hiring them myself...

Well, I should be OK. My skill training atm is shield management 5, which finishes on the 19th. Nine days of leeway ought to be enough!
However, my alt has a skill going which finishes about 15 minutes after downtime starts. Not sure what to do tbh.
