Originally we had planned to "only" give away 3B ISK in cash prizes - 3B ISK seemed appropriate for a 3 year anniversary
But then a sponsor offered to put in "a bit extra" - Which I was only happy to hear. Imagine my shock when I saw just how much that sponsor was going to add to the pot.
All the ships in the prizelist (also the Main Prize) + and additional 2.5B ISK has been donated by this sponsor.
I hereby offer my extreme gratitude to Cally from Eve Intergalactic Bank for this gracious gift. It's magnitude is simply unheard of in the history of EVE (to my knowledge), and is definatly a major contributor to making this the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary round very special indeed.
Who knows if we'll ever see such an absolutly huge BIG Lottery pot ever again. Maybe in a years time? [:-]
Time will tell.
For now I wish everyone the best of luck (if you buy tickets) in the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary round.
Good Luck.

www.BIG-EVE.com
The BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary
3 years ago the first ever BIG Lottery was held. (in release)
The amazing price was one Vexor Cruiser + one cruiser skillpack. 38 EVE pilots took part, and bought tickets for 1,639,000 ISK. BIG added some extra ISK to make it a nice round sum of 5M ISK.
The winner had the option of taking the ISK, or the Vexor + cruiser skillpack. The winner wisely chose the latter option (worth more) - Vexors where expensive back than [:-]
The BIG Lottery has moved on a bit since then. Both with regards to number of participants (max beeing 5,202 in one round) and with regards to ticket income (max beeing 7,126,879,000 ISK in one round) and not least the size of prizes (max beeing around 3-4B in one round at a very rough guess)
We naturally hope to beat all those numbers for this very special occation
3 years is a very long time - Unbelievable long really. 3 years of typing in tickets manually from the wallet (/me waves a stick at CCP) As of this writing theres 29156 records in the BIG Lottery database. Unbelievable...
78 of those belong to one very special person, I would like to 'honor' by mentioning here in the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary post. Namely : Omber Zombie.
Omber Zombie has played in each and every round of the BIG Lottery since the beginning. Hence the 78 entries And still hasnt won a thing...
Now thats dedication - Thank you OZ
Now, to give OZ (and everyone else , a reasonable chance of winning *something* in this the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary round, we have piled up the number of prizes higher than ever before seen in the history of the BIG Lottery.
Theres simply oodles and oodles of prizes, 2-3 times more than ever before seen in any round of the BIG Lottery.
Not only is there more individual prizes than ever before, the total value of the prizes also far overshadows anything else ever before seen in the BIG Lottery.
To value of the prizes for the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary round is somewhere in between 6.5B and 7B ISK total - A bit depending on how much value you put on the main prize
I prodly present you with the prize list for the BIG Lottery 3 Year Anniversary round

From the details on the Big Lottery web page, the rules are the same....
1,000 ISK per ticket, maximum 5000 tickets per person.
I usually only buy 100 tickets but i've maxed out to the full 5000 for this one... me likes the sound of a Navy Issue Megathron

Does the winner of the ticket has to be online during the drawing of the lottery to be valid to receive the prize Or otherwise it'll be invalid and another winner will be picked?

you don't need to be at the drawing to win - not sure on the exact stats, but i'd say most winners aren't at the drawings.
As for multiple prize wins - i can't see why you couldn't win them all - you are buying multiple tickets, there are multiple prizes, don't see anything saying you are exempt from winning another prize if you've already won one. ----------------------

Ok, first time I'm participating so this might be a stupid question, but I just checked my receipt through the in-game browser and it says "Donation", the amount of isk I sent in and date and such, not amount of tickets or anything.
Just wondering if that's how it's supposed to be if you're in the lottery or have my entry fee been treated as a donation?

Quite a few people get caught out by this. Look closely and you'll see there is no reason to worry:
Date - Amount - Donation 2006/05/10 .21:07 - 5000000 ISK
Count the dashes and you can see there are three 'columns'; the date, the amount you paid for tickets and then the donation amount.
Date ----------------- Amount ------- Donation 2006/05/10 .21:07 - 5000000 ISK
The receipt page has never displayed the amount of tickets, just the ISK transferred.

Read on your page and from what I can deduct I will need to be in the channel when the drawing occurs, or?

Edited by: Freyya on 18/05/2006 15:50:18 No you dont have to be in drawing channel although its always funny as hell though As for the drawing itself...its not really that hard.. BIG Games will give a range between 2 numbers and the people (some or all) will type a number between that range... the first 4 number to show up in his chatscreen will be used to calculate the number of the winning ticket..example :
BIG GAMES: range is between 2 mil and 8 mil (2000000-8000000) BG: 5 BG: 4 BG: 3 BG: 2 BG: 1 BG: GO first contestant number: 5241632 2ND contestant number: 6842514 3rd cn: 5000001 4th cn: 7650000 5th cn: 8000520 (this number is outside the range of the first 4 numbers requires for the equasion and thus will not be used) The first 4 numbers will be added up and BIG will ask you to do the same to verify the outcome.. The outcome will be used in an equasion: (fictive outcome) 45.201.432 mod(ulus) (number of total tickets sold) 1.524.212 = (fictive outcome) 652081 ---> winner of 250 mil Thats it.
Hope its clear like this.. Remember: you dont have to be in the channel or even online to win any prizes. Drawing monday 1800 GMT (EVE Time) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------to be or not to be is not important in the world of EVE... Thanks Freyya for explaining.
Another question then, if I may?
I sent in 1m for 1000 tickets, new here so no real wealth to draw from.
But, I am now in a position to be able to afford a bit more tickets, so.
If I send in cash for another 1k tickets will my two posts be combined to one with 2k, or will I have 2 "ticket ranges", 1k each?

Ok.. I obviously missed something when it comes to this "lottery".
I come into the channel, and I find the Big Lottery char talking about the alphabet, picking number ranges, then a count down, and then everyone in the channel starts spamming numbers.
WTH is going on?
I thought this was a lottery, where each "ticket" was assigned a number, and we'd be seeing the results of the random number generator picking prizes. I've been over the IGB web site 3 times and it doesn't tell me anything about this .. whatever is takeing place in the chat channel.
Someone have a link to WTH is going on? this can't be a scam from the length of time it's been running, so I obviously musta missed something. Anyone provide a link to what I'm missing?

thanks.. odd. Guess I was looking for something simpler.. didn't think there would be that much theatrics to it. I figured you'd come into the channel.. see them start at the bottom with a program randomly giveing out a number, and that'd be the winner of the "cheapest" prize and they'd work up.. Ahh well. Guess I'll have to wait till tommorrow for the results.

Ya know, I can understand them not wanting to give away all the prizes in 5 minutes, but at the rate they are going, it'll take about 6 hours to give away all the prizes.
And as already pointed out, the system is crap. Only the people with middle-ish numbers are going to win. Guess I won't win squat as I didn't get entered until late Saturday - early Sunday so my numbers are all near the end.

The reason we use the modulous method is it's very hard to predict the outcome of the draw, making it hard to mess with the system.
Yes it takes a bit, but we try very very hard to make this fair and accurate.
please excuse the time it's taking, there are alot of prizes!

With the ranges you're using, people with ticket numbers not in the high millions can't win. At all.

Originally by: haulerbee wow, thats random? peeps typing in numbers in the chan. well im dis-illusioned.
The sum of the numbers is divided by the number of tickets and the remainder is the actual ticket that won. (modulus) If the range the numbers are being chosen from is significantly larger than the number of tickets, that's a decent way to do it. (It is also better if no one guessing numbers knows the total number sold. I'm not familiar enough with the lottery process to know if this is the case.)
There are better ways of getting random numbers, but they would make it impossible for people to observe a public display of how the number was picked.

4 numbers, being picked from between 15 and 25 mil, if I remember correctly. This gives a total of between 60000000 and 100000000. Your assessment is that you have 11,293,002 tickets in this lottery.
So - 60000000 would equate to a win for ticket number - 3534990 (also, highly unlikely, but that's into really complex game theory territory) Every 11293002 up from that will be a win for the same ticket, so... 71293002, 82586004, 93879006 <- these three are also a win for that ticket, giving it a total of 4 chances.
Now, let's see what happens to the person who /would/ get picked by 59999999, if that were possible given your ranges. (Ticket number 3534989) Winning numbers would be: 59999999 (not possible), 71293001, 82586003, 93879005. This person has only 3 winning chances.
Therefore, you are in violation of your statement that a person with 2 tickets has twice the chance to win of a person with 1 ticket, because the chance a person has of winning depends significantly on the number ranges you elect to use, and the number of their ticket(s).

The way that the winners are selected, does not make me happy. I think this is the first and last time i partipate in a Big Games Lottery. I understand their method for choosing the winning numbers. I think that the lower your tickets are, the less chance you have of winning.

Actually, that rather depends on the precise range that's picked, and the number of tickets, as to whether lower or higher numbers are picked.
On a different note.
They don't mention anywhere how they go about assigning ticket numbers, however, with 11mil + tickets, I figure they must do them sequentially by purchase order.
So...
2006/05/20 .12:34 - 6,014,951 - 1,000 2006/05/20 .12:35 - 6,019,951 - 5,000
That second line, is where I bought tickets. It matches the transaction time, and the number of tickets that I bought - there are no other 5k purchases within 2 minutes either way.
Therefore, assuming numbers are assigned sequentially:
Taking my ticket number 6,017,000.
I know that 4 numbers are going to be picked, and that the other 3 will be random. However, I also know that the probability of winning will increase the closer that I can put the number that I need to 3 times the midrange of the allowed numbers (averaging and all, together with greater possible combinations to form the number).
So - They're taking the modulus relating to total tickets, 11,293,002. I'll just add that to my ticket number, oh, 7 times. This gives...85068014. If there are going to be four numbers, and I'm quick enough to put one of them, I would type 25000000 every time. Because this would put me as close to 60000000 extra needed as I could, thus giving me the greatest chance to win.
(And, for reference, I didn't participate in the draw in any way. And, I really hope that a BIG person comes and tells me the numbers aren't sequential, I really do.)

Simplified numbers I'll use for this demonstration, because my head is just not cut out for consistently running stuff on 7-digit numbers...
Imagine a situation in which there were 10 tickets. Now, say that 4 people were invited to pick a number between 8 and 12. This would give a range of 32 to 48.
So...32 and 42 are a win for ticket 2. 33 and 43 are a win for ticket 3, and so on until 38 and 48 are a win for ticket 8. tickets 9 and 1, have only one chance, 39 and 41 respectively.
(This also points something else out - they must be going by a modulus of one greater than max tickets, or by shifting all tickets down 1, so the first ticket is #0.
So, in this situation, it's 9 and 1 that are short-changed. If the range had been 9-13 instead, then you have an overall range of 36 to 52. Here, 36 and 46 win for ticket 6, etc. etc. - tickets 3,4,5 are shortchanged here - only 43,44,45 respectively will win for them.
In short - the precise ticket number doesn't matter for how likely you are to win, until they pick the range. At that point, all tickets are no longer equal. Of course, if they pick the number ranges randomly, then they do have a defense, otherwise - it's not truly a lottery.

Would like to point out a few things from those of you complaining.
A) Nobody Forced you participate. B) This is the way the winners have been chosen for long as I can remember. C) If you won, would you still be complaining?

I wish I knew how to code, as I'd write my own lottery program.
It's a really simple design.
Find two of the fine random number generators around. Use one RNG to assign ticket numbers to each entrant, using a system similar to BIG's modulus system for the random seed if you like. Post everyone's ticket numbers a day or two before the final draw so we know what they are. (Kinda optional, but allows players to know there numbers, people feel much better when they know their numbers) Use the other RNG to pick ticket numbers live, using the same random seed method for each draw.
Voila, you've got a nice, fair system.
Yes, I know that RNG are really PRNG, but there are some very nice ones that will fill the purposes needed for this simple lottery system.

Well, this was the first lotery for me in EVE, and i doubt that i will be joining BIG GAMES Lotery again...
I don¦t do math at all, so those calculations looks like a bird to me.. but, i did notice, that nomatter how many tickets you buy, you have to buy them 1 at a time, to actually get the number of tickets you want....
I bought 5000 tickets over 2 rounds: 1: I bought for 1 mil. 2: I bought for 4 mil.
Now i have 2 entries in my wallet, and each entry serves as my actual ticketnumber. (Was said so by BIG GAMES in channel last night...)
So i wonder; what the (cursing) happened to the remaining 4998 yicket numbers ??? There is a greater meaning of life, even i you look at life as being a miner... |

I paid 5M isk to TornSoul, didn't know what character to pay to because the BIG site was down. I really wanted to be in this lottery. When I logged on just now I noticed that I had received 5M isk from TornSoul...and now the BIG site works so I read that the character that I was supposed to pay to was BIG Games. So I guess i wasn't in the lottery after all :( .
I'm not blaming any one I'm just bitter. Congrats to the winners!

I thought it was unfair at first but then I thought about it for a while. I'd very much like to see your explanation as I figure it is completely fair. I would be interested in knowing how you established that the system you currently use covers the entire range of ticket values with equal probability.
I would also be interested to know the number of tickets sold in each round and the ticket number of the winners so perhaps a scatter graph could be calculated for each and compiled together into one graph by equating the number of tickets sold. Theoretically, the results should be all over the graph with no correlation at all. But the reality is that I've never seen a statistical test to show that. I believe the lottery is fair but I'd just like to see it for myself :).
Also, the modulo result given is almost always nonterminating for 20+ numbers, so how do you decide how many numbers to do it to and what happens to ticket numbers that are physically outside that range. E.G. if 150,000 tickets are sold, what happens if you decide to take the result only to 5 decimal places? That means only numbers 10,001 to 99,999 can possibly win, doesn't it? Or do you have an odd numbering system whereby everyone is given a number in the correct range with no overlaps?
I know it's all internal stuff but I would be interested in seeing how the lottery functions as to my mind there has never been a lottery which used this kind of system before.

Decimal places??? I think you've misunderstood what modulus is about
---------
I currently dont have time for the promised rebuff (going out the door shortly), I would however point out (once more) that the rules for how the actual drawing is conducted can be found on the lottery pages.
Theyve been there since day one.
So comming here whining about the method used (and even in many many cases, showing a total lack of comprehension about the process/math involved) is neither here nor there.
If you dont like it - No one is forcing you to play. You have only your self to blaim for not informing yourself beforehand (not to mention educate yourself as well in many cases...)
So please - Calm down already OK.
--------
Now theres two main reasons for doing it the way we do.
1: It's rig proof. You cant cheat, and even as important - Nor can I. 2: It's about *involving* people in the process of the drawing - It's "interactive" if you will.
The last point is very important to me.
Simply sitting in a channel hearing winners beeing called out, as I query some (pseudo)-random thingymaj for a number, and then look up the winner in the DB, whats the fun in that?
Sure, it would be helluva lot faster than the way we do it today - But would be equally less fun as well. Might as well just read about it in my post later.
I'd also like to point out that during a 'normal' draw - Theres alot more fun&games going on, not necessarily having much to do with the drawing itself
But theres also usually *far* less people in the channel - Who all know how to behave, so everyone has a good time as well...
The heavy use of modding last night, was (not unexpected) necessary due to the (sadly large) amount off a-holes who inhabit EVE, who thinks fun is about ruining others fun (I'll just never understand that mindset).
As mentioned, under 'normal' circumstances, the actual drawing proces is much more fun filled (not too mention *a lot* shorter ) BIG Lottery

Decimal places??? I think you've misunderstood what modulus is about
I'm a programmer. I know exactly what the modulo operation does, it returns the remainder of a division. I thought that you were decimalising the remainder as a percentage of the range or something silly. I can see how the modulo result of a large "random" number divided by the number of tickets would be fair.
I do not appreciate being insulted and called mathematically inept. If I was understanding the situation wrong, as I assumed I was because of all people in eve I trust you to keep things fair, I asked for it to be explained to me if you would do me the courtesy. I asked in confusion, not hostility. I realise now that it's fair, I just wasn't thinking right about how you were applying the modulo result. Quite an ingenious system, actually.
Of course, to claim it is IMPOSSIBLE to rig is naive. You're not generating random numbers, you're accepting input from players. If I had 5 alts there and had a program calculate 5 numbers in a given range, the modulo result against the number of tickets of which would return one of my ticket numbers, I could have them spam their numbers every time and hope that one time I get all five of them as the first answers. In that case, I would win. It's not a complete or easy plan but a possibility.
