IGÇÖm not usually the type to call out gaming companies with my forum posts. This time IGÇÖm going to. CCP is a very successful, clever and virtuous gaming company. But they do make mistakes.
Foremost among their mistakes is the power gap between the brand new player and the seasoned veteran. There's about 3-4 months where a new player cannot fit a competitive PvP cruiser. 3-4 months, which is nothing compared to the years upon years the vets have had to hone their abilities. 3-4 months, which seems massive to new players.
I cannot overstate how discouraging a wait of this period is to prospective new customers. They look at the state of the game and think "Wow, four months before I can even be effective? And then lets say I want to stop brawling with my Gallente ship and start kiting, I'll have to wait another two or three months to try that!?"
Now, most of the skill progression in EVE is balanced. CCP have done a wonderful job in letting the average age characters compete with the very old ones. No one wants the training time for a supercapital or titan reduced.
However, the first three months of the new player's game play should be radically overhauled. Players should start with all the skills needed to fly one race's well fit t1 frigates and cruisers. From there, they can decide what secondary ships and weapons systems they want to train to become more versatileGÇö or simply go up in size with their primary race.
The common argument against this is that it devalues the power of veterans. But when you consider things carefully, 3-4 months is almost nothing to experienced players. In fact many of the skills we want to train take upwards of a month to complete anyway.
No, giving new players this level of starting SP would hardly affect experienced players. But it would greatly affect new players. Many more people who try EVE for the first time would be retained and become paying customers. In turn, this makes New Eden a more fun and exciting place for players like myself who have been around for a while. Master trole 2014. |

I dont think "pride" has anything to do with current game mechanics.
That's like asking a card dealer "swallow your pride and let me get an extra card." CCP I DEMAND YOU GIVE ME AN OFFICER FIT BATTLESHIP ON DAY ONE SO THAT I MIGHT CALL YOUR GAME BROKEN WHEN I LOSE IT HOURS LATER!
I have no problem with the current progression system and I am a few weeks younger than Diamond Zerg.
Ergo my opinion overrules his. I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

That's the problem with some people. No matter how much you give them, they want more and more and more till there is nothing left.
CCP's mistake was in thinking they could satisfy the insatiable.

I stopped reading at: "very successful, virtuous gaming company.."
Most people that play this game sure got the wrong perspective of what a sucessfull gaming company is at a business level.
Calling out 35k (TOONS) - 2/3 are alts, online on average success, is a VERY distorted view of reality.
But no one can help any of you anyways, youre far behind the times (most of you) so just keep going, maybe you'll catch up someday if you try hard.
Related to the thread: I dont agree with OP. I think CCP should stick to the plan as it would be no fair for older players (in this case) |

New players get quite the boost already, but then again, what would it matter anymore if new players get acceleration to catch up. Most already have all the necessary skills trained, older players indeed would be unaffected by this, and would allow starting players and alts to get on the level.
True it's not asking for P2W layer, but it would this move result in nothing but an overinflux of alts, instead of new players. I wonder cause an alt doesen't truly contribute to the raw player count, and truly new players are IMO much welcomed, since they add directly to the population pool helping making EVE a tad bit more lively place. |

And yet paying subscriber numbers keep growing as they always have. As if it matters if people are multiboxing and running alts.
And your 2/3 of all accounts statistic is completely pulled out of your ass.
And seeing 35-40k players ONLINE at ALL TIMES is a success. People live in different timezones, you know. And people do need to sleep. Multiply that number by twelve two-hour prime-time zones and you get a number close to the total subscribers.

The novelty factor with MMOs is over.
They've existed for a very long time now.
People aren't starting a new game to play for the sake of doing so. They're looking for one where they feel they're being rewarded for the amount of time they invest.
As is, a new player can Log in once every 24 hours, for 2 minutes at a time for 2 months straight resulting in a total of 120 minutes of game time, and still be at just about the same level of capability as a new player who logged in every day and spent 6 hours a day for a total of 720 hours of game play.
It's understandable how it's easy to arrive at the conclusion that a new player isn't expected, or even required to play the game. Not a very compelling reason to convince someone to pay $15 a month for what could very well take a year to reach a level to be able to finally start playing the game in a manner that will allow you to fund your game time with your game time and not your dollars. Proof of lying in thread.

no, training time is fine.
as a newish player myself (less than 1 year) I find that training time very nicely coincides with my personal skill of actually piloting whatever I'm training for.
right now I'm a bit behind, but I blew 3 months of training on PI skills (2 alts and this guy) |

If you define 'capability' solely by the number of SP that a character has, you're doing it wrong. Being able to park your character in a particular hull does not automatically make you capable of flying it effectively, especially as pertains to PvP. A new player that spends those hours learning to fit, fly, and fight, is going to drag the other guy with his 120 minutes over the coals the majority of the time.
