While it's awesome to see them return, something seems off about them.
They look great in terms of how they respond to the activation of MWDs and afterburners, and how they respond when your ship changes direction, but they just seem off with the rest of Eve's graphics.
If anything, they seem too smooth, kind of like the original version of Homeworld, rather than being rough around the edges as if your thrusters are exhausting vapour rather than giving a smooth, even trail.
Don't get me wrong, they look awesome, but they just seem too smooth and uniform, rather than looking like a set of contrails.

Maybe they just need to have a bit of the heat-effect applied around their edges to make them look like heated regions of waste. |

This version of the effect probably isn't final at all. I suspect that the final version will resemble the effect in the login screen. |

I never thought of the Homeworld graphics as superheated gas exhaust, rather a lingering effect on space from some micro warp type effect
Heat shimmer sounds excellent if it can be applied. Another hour or so before I can judge for myself. |

Heat shimmer is already present on the thrusters of ships that have received their V3 treatment. It's pretty nice! It would be cool to see that kind of effect on the trails themselves, but I don't think it's necessary. |

Superheated gases in a vacuum don't behave anything like the engine trails on Sisi.
They might look better if they expanded and dispersed as they fade, instead of being so perfectly straight.
Also, why do they only appear at sub-warp speeds? It would make more sense for them to appear only in warp than only in sub-warp.
Personally, I'd like the option to only have them on while warping, and not the rest of the time. |

If they were intending to emulate the Homeworld style engine trail, there's an issue. HW was made to have cell shaded style graphics which don't fit with Eve's graphics at all.
Something needs to be added to make it slightly less uniform / add a little texture. |

Yeah, they seem a not definitive solution. I expect them to be asymetrical, according to the ships' racial thruster styles, and with particles. But give time for the developers. |

I fear that's impossible. It would equal to more lag.
So... we have the old school thruster trails back. Nice.
Problem is that they don't fit anymore with the more realistic graphics. OP is right. Need a little iteration on that. |

They're great in every way except that they need to be softer. That is, the light does not falloff around the widths of the trails and should do so. |

That is a video of Nexus - Jupiter Incident gameplay.. The engine trails in this game are amazing. I think eve should take notice of these, and try and do something similiar. |

Something like that would look really good with EVE me thinks.
I also hope we'll get engine trails during warp too, it's a bit jarring to go from engine trails, no engine trails and engine trails again... plus it would look extremely cool.
I'm thinking though that the trails we see now are very much WIP. |

Engine trails are stupid, and I'm extremely glad you can turn them off in settings.
They look extremely unrealistic, verging on the point of cartoony. |

I just checked out SiSi and I like the engine trails.
I would like to suggest that, along with some ideas already mentioned regarding the smoothness of them, they also need to be a little bit shorter.
Apart from that, great! |

They are kinda flat. CCP thanks for bringing back ship trails (what took you so long, seriously.) What needs to be done in my opinion to these trails is a simple bit of distortion. Don't make them super clean, make them spread out a bit over time. Add little bits of exhaust flares to the trails occasionally and make the gas or whatever it is spread out after being pushed into space. I promise it'll look better.
Less flat shaded. Add volume!
edit: Also, I think I figured out what it is. The trails encompass the entire engine cone. Have them just come from the tip, and scale them down considerably. |

I also thought something was off about these and I figured it out...
They don't look like engine TRAILS they look like engine TAILS
When you swing the ship around the entire trail moves as if it were a bunch of ropes.
The trail shouldn't swing around it should show that a turn was made and dissipate along the path the trail was originally laid down in.
Other than that I think they're okay....just the way they are now it looks like you're flying around with a bunch of white rope swinging from the back of your ship.

Hated the old engine trails, hate the new ones. I don't understand the appeal at all. I'll be turning them off just like the good old days.
What would be infinitely better is if the visual effect for the Mach disks was more transparent and larger, not to mention more diamond shaped instead of triangular. |

+1 Is that true ?! I didn't yet have a chance to go and look at them. If that is the case, then it's HORRIBLE. |
