Par for the course for Scope posting, honestly.
Go ahead and quit, bro. That's the wonderful thing about capitalism, the market steps in to fill any significant gap. If enough of you lot quit to make an impact, it just raises the price and gives further incentive to mine. Which handily balances out your even existing at all. Seriously not getting ganked really isn't that hard... But you would have to be actually paying attention and be at your keyboard to do that...
With that said please point at the toy machinaw where the evil catalyst touched you.

Since I am a fellow miner, can i Procurer your unwanted mining items? It would be such a waste to let them just lie there unloved and unused.
But as for gankers, meh...they are a part of this game as us miners, just roll with the punches and keep on mining.

@ the OP, the miners in my corp regard getting ganked as part of the "running costs" of a mining op. The effort to protect a fleet generally was not worth the lost income. This is changing in the summer patch.

New procurer looks good.
It is way faster and has double drone bay and more drone damage.
Plus a bit more mining ability.
More targets and a longer targeting range. Less resolution apparently so people do not start building extra cheap combat ships out of them.
Ore hold the same size. Smaller sig so harder to hit..
This was the initial proposed changes, have not heard it changed greatly:

I was thinking more like a suicide gank bait ship.
HIGH Ice Harvester II
MID Medium shield extender II Adaptive invulnerability field II Warp disrupter II
LOW Damage Control II Drone Damage Amplifier II Drone Damage Amplifier II
Drones 5x Hobgoblin II 5x Warrior II
Even if they don't target you, it would provide good defense to fellow miners who may be in weaker ships. Usually when I'm on my industrial alt and I'm bored I throw weird fits out there in attempt to bait a suicide gank to see if I can live long enough to either pick up an easy kill, or they get concorded.
I actually once fitted a hulk with 1 strip miner and 2 nuets, and enough tank to survive a full 19 second gank from a solo catalyst. I got a bite, had one Catalyst completely nueted out and survived with 10% armour left. 2 easy kills :D Granted I have most of the relevant shield skills to V, and sheil and this probably won't work with someone who didn't bother, but that's what I do for fun on my industrialist :D Erotica 1: Scams someone-á-á Ripard: Makes inflamatory blog post that incites eve community and the MMO community-á Sohkar: I wasn't harrased-á-á-á-áCCP: Banned-á-á-á Moral of this story? Procurers are stupidly cheap due to a massive oversupply dating back forever... they sell for 15 mill or so whilst they cost 20 mill plus to make. Its one of the few ships where T2 fits can cost as much as the hull.
If they end up mining at the same rate as a retriever they will become very viable if you are loading directly into an Orca. Especially with some fleet boosts to the tank.

Yes. And six months ago they were 10m
If? Dont they almost mine at the same rate as it is? (Im not a bean counter, so I dont count 10% +/- as an effective difference in rate)

Last time I put it through EFT, The retriever mined with less then 1% more yield then the procurer. The only reason the retriever/machinaw is so popular is because they are AFK friendly with their large cargo bays. Basically all the retriever/machinaw are is suicide ganker magnets. Might as well just put up a sign that says gank me around your neck.

EFT Warriors never get the whole story.
While on paper the Proc is almost as good the retriever wins cleanly in reality due to the bonus to make them all equivalent to 3 strip miners being a yield bonus for ore, not a time/cap bonus like ice got. Which means that a Proc mines 'dead' roids far more often resulting in wasted time, and therefore reduced yield. |

I dont use EFT, I look at the ship stats. So instead of guessing, lets look.
Retriever Traits: Mining Barge skill bonus per level: 5% bonus to ore hold capacity
Role Bonus: 50% bonus to Strip Miner yield 33.33% reduction in Ice Harvester Duration and capacitor use
Procurer Traits: Mining Barge skill bonus per level: 5% bonus to shield hit points
Role Bonus: 200% bonus to Strip Miner yield 66.66% reduction in Ice Harvester Duration and capacitor use
So... A Ret has 2 Strip miners, each with a +50% Role bonus, giving a yield as if it had three strip miners
A Proc has 1 Strip miner, with a +200% Role bonus, giving a yield as if it had three strip miners
Now, unless Ive grabbed old data (and if I have, please correct me), looks like they are the same to me, modified by low slots, though this reduces the tank of both if exclusively fitted with Money-Grabber Upgrades
Also, how does the Proc mine "dead" roids more often? because it only has one beam and not two? If this is a worry, deploy mining drones.
Also, Rets are easier to kill, and so you are probably replacing the ship more often, and this should be a calculation if isk over time is your absolute only concern. *** Vote MTU For CSM *** ***Free The Jita 1*** "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." - Pontianak Sythaeryn "Despite others being missing, at least Ramona is back." - Scipio Artelius |

On paper, ignoring the extra MLU of the retriever, yes. However like I said, EFT Warriors never get the whole story. You are trying to EFT warrior also by simply looking at stats. Which only give you the 'perfect world' scenario.
Actual use in space says despite the stats basically matching, the Proc actually doesn't do as well because it doesn't get as close to 'ideal' efficiency as the Retriever does on average. Even using a survey scanner a Proc is still less efficient because you are sitting there with stopwatch in hand doing mental maths, and thus won't be perfectly accurate. And 1 second lost on the Proc is a larger margin than 1 second on the Retriever on a single strip. (Assuming you are sensible and split your strip miners) |

No I can't give you a precise figure for 'real space yield' difference, because it's real space. You can't sit down and calculate a precise figure that you will always be at.
However empirical testing does give somewhere around a 5%ish margin using scanner + 2 MLU set ups. If you max yield a retriever for 3 MLU then retriever pulls further ahead. (Given the actual paper difference on a current max yield fit is a Proc mines 91% of the Retrievers yield, assuming ideal situations) This will obviously vary based on the day, if you get distracted by rats just when you need to be cycling the strips, if you are pre aligning perfectly just as your hold fills, if you are running a fleet with a hauler orca so you can just poop ore out and not have additional time in warp on the proc, etc
But the end reality is, the Retriever as it stands currently does mine a significant amount more. So it's not terrible CEO's telling people to use it. Post Summer, this difference is obviously slightly reduced as there is a time reduction component built into the ship skills, which brings them both closer to ideal situations, but the proc benefits more from that. |

Ok, now what Im reading is you say that 1 beam operating at the efficency of three compares unfavourably with two beams operating as three by your estimation of 5%.
Assuming ideal circumstances you say that the MLU difference is a base 9% in the Ret's favour.
So (not holding that I agree that your real space figure is accurate) you are claiming a 14% advantage over a Proc when untanked.
So given this, what is the difference in Isk over a three hour period, not including ore hold difference (as this is easily circumvented by Hauler alts, Orcas etc) on any one ore type you choose?

Amazingly there are a lot of people who don't mine in large groups in this game. The difference in ISK would be.... Hmmmm, hey, about that 14% mark you calculated. Amazingly a difference in ore translates directly into a difference in ISK income. And a hauler 'alt' is A: A cost monthly. And B: Halving the income. So unless you are ISBoxing a massive fleet or running large scale ops (Hi Orca I referred to and Hi Covetor that is even better at that point) a dedicated hauler is inefficient.
A tanked barge won't save you in low, it won't save you from a wt and it won't save you from someone who really wants to gank you. All it will save you from is the casual gank for lols. And simply warping off when you see a catalyst or thrasher land on grid is just as good for saving you from the lols most times assuming you don't sit at 0 on the belt warp in. |

How so? How does an alt reduce your isk income? Unless that Tayra is what you are counting.

Yeah but it will. And it even lets you mine in Null and WHs. (I know a couple of people that do all three, they havent lost many Procs, but their corp mates lose Rets all the time, to rats, WTs and Gankers)
Yes, actually being at the keyboard and warping off when you see them is the best tank, but tanking them long enough for (if in High) CONCORD to get them or (if in any other sec) your Corp mates in combat ships, or deploying ECMs, is also a viable security measure. *** Vote MTU For CSM *** ***Free The Jita 1*** "They feel the need to cover their ears and eyes in horror at your very presence." - Pontianak Sythaeryn "Despite others being missing, at least Ramona is back." - Scipio Artelius |

In Highsec, unboosted. 20 Mil an hour is a fair mining income. Again, market fluctuations, if your favourite ore is available, if you are using T2 Strips & T2 crystals etc. So 14% of that is 2.8 Mil/Hour difference. Up to double for Null
Using a hauler account is another account you have to spread the income over. If you use 2 accounts, and one hauls, thats 50% income for each. So the more accounts the easier it is to add a hauler. But that hauler account has to save you more time/isk than the share it takes. And by the time you get to that being worth it you should easily be into the Covetor/Hulk territory from fleet size, and therefore the Retriever/Proc comparison has gone out the window anyway. This goes double for a combat ship 'guarding' you in highsec, since not only can it not haul so dilutes income automatically, but it could make more ratting than a mining ship mining normally can. Low sec you could have a combat fleet in system I guess running anoms or group running lvl 5's or something. But again, that takes you to a large scale group.
As for Null & WH, yes, tank matters there because you are likely to have a defence fleet forming before they even get there, and be in a large enough group. Which was why I didn't list Null & WH in tank not really mattering.
As for Dave, It doesn't reduce pay, since you have to calculate pay per account till you have covered your plex. And if you don't have enough time to mine 40 hours a week, with current plex prices..... |

once you get to 3 accounts the third pays for itself by being an orca, then for every additional miner you add, that spreads the plex cost of the orca over more income sources thus reducing the time you "need" to spend mining. also, you don't "need" to plex your accounts.
in short; not mining in a fleet is dumb because you're taking a **** income, and making it shittier.
in addition you've got a sizable chunk of SP dedicated to skills that are only useful for mining. |

So you would exchange over 20,000 EHP for 2.8mil an hour? A difference your hauler alt for example could make up by ratting for half an hour.

Plus, they dont have to "guard you", the point Im making is you can set yourself up to tank long enough for them to get there.

The Hauler alt is costing you lost income, also known as opportunity cost. If you could have made more money by using them to mine instead of haul, you have lost money. The same thing that makes minerals you mine not free when you build a ship with them.
And in high, there is no practical 'guarding' over any length of time. That's scientifically proven and why armies rotate sentries every 2 hours when they can if they need that level of alertness. Low sec, go on, drop a 20 man mining fleet with a 10 man defence fleet and see how long it takes a roaming gang to land on you with a cyno of carriers. You will show up as a significant hot spot on the map in low sec with any sizeable group, and any non sizeable group will get eaten alive by a roam that comes across them.

Well I cannot imagine wanting to mine for 10 hours, so thats just me. Its still only 14% of your total income, (which I dont actually subscribe to btw, the 14%, but Im giving you benefit of the doubt because, as I said, Im not a miner). And as I said, your hauler alt can be generating in excess of that easily without even training any skills at all!

So, multiboxining a fleet then, thats what you are saying. See, what Im having a problem with in this theory (because, believe it or not, Im not trying to tell you how to play, Im just fascinated by miners wanting to be soft targets, your playstyle is your own) is that you dont want to reduce your risk. You fly high risk in High Sec, and thats what I dont understand, for low reward.

that hauler alt is sitting in an orca providing boosts, boosts that provide more isk/hour to 2+ pilots than it would ever make if it was in a mining ship itself. the hauler isn't costing you anything, it's making you more money. every pilot you add after the third is worth roughly 1.5 solo miners.
let's say, for the sake of simple maths, that 10 solo miners pull in 1bn isk, i'd only need 7.6 pilots to pull in the same isk. this leads you to two scenarios; either i have lower plex costs because i'm using less pilots, or i'm earning more isk for the same plex costs.
"but boosts drop when you warp" yeah well, they only need to be active when cycles start, and end, the rest is irrelevant. even so, if we drop a couple of cycles when we do dump ore in the station... rounding errors when calculating isk/hour will have more of an impact on your calculations than not having boosts for a cycle or two.
the opportunity cost of a hauler is literally none existent until the point where you're mining so much ore that having a "dead weight" hauler that's contributing nothing to the isk/hour and only relieving logistical pressure is spread over that many miners the cost is once again; negligible.
mining solo provides poor income, ties up SP in untransferable skills, and should be discouraged unless you really really hate new players. |

Why should a cruiser sized ship designed for tank and bonused for light & medium drones be soloable by a frigate? It seems to me to be in a good spot. Of course if you speed tank the drones you get them to wig out in the MWD speed trap, and take no damage either way. |

I'm talking about having bonused drones combined with the tank that it has.

Dave was the one who brought multiboxed fleets into it. That quote you seized on was me replying to him, not you.
Anyway, other points. Unless you have an unusual fit, they bring enough to kill you in highsec no matter what your tank, so concord doesn't save you. Solo mining in a tanked ship won't save you anywhere unless you have friends, so if you are talking actually solo, it's irrelevant what your tank is anywhere outside of high, or in high with a WT. Possible exception being the skiff if the drones actually work like people are EFT warrioring. However since drones wig out at speed, they probably won't. Anything else, you die in a fire, it just takes a little longer. Also if we are talking solo, you don't have a hauler alt anyway. You have to multibox to use a hauler alt regardless, so could multibox it doing something else. And if the hauler alt could make more money doing something else with no skills.... then you still loose money using it to haul. The only situation a hauler alt doesn't loose money is in the large fleet scenario.
So, back to the original point. There is plenty of reason to use a retriever if you mine and are looking for a low cost option. There is also some good reason to use a procurer. On Ice the Procurer is actually a very good choice for a cheap hard to gank ship. Since there it has a time bonus so can mine the last of an ice roid from under a retrievers lasers. So, the balance is fairly good between them, retriever slightly better on ore, proc better on ice once you account for tank, since ice miners also get ganked more due to being more concentrated by belts. |

ah okay.
I think it would have been better if they took that 50% role bonus and made it a 10% bonus per skill level to make it in line with all the other drone boats. Basically what you have here is a vexor with a dominix tank. If they want to keep the drone damage bonus it would be more balanced if you had to train to get the full effect, then if you got it from Level 1.
Still though, A skiff/procurer is meant to be an extreamly tanky mining barge. I think the drone damage bonus is more meant for dealing with rats then players. After all, all a frigate pilot has to do is primary the drones and unlike other ships, you just dropped the mining barge to 0 dps...

Why should a cruiser sized ship designed for tank and bonused for light & medium drones be soloable by a frigate? It seems to me to be in a good spot. Of course if you speed tank the drones you get them to wig out in the MWD speed trap, and take no damage either way.
Actually the proc/ skiff is frig sized when you repackage it, just has an abnormally large sig. There never was anything wrong with the proc/ skiff in the first place, i tanked 2 bs/ 3 cruiser spawns in it mining solo, the extra low was all that was needed in terms of buffs to make the yield better. Now we are gonna have a 150 dps (without DDAs) proc with cruiser/ BC tank ,cruiser sensor strength, and cruiser/ BC drone bay. Well i know what i'm flying in shield sinks from now on ;) And RR procs are gonna be totally OP now, calling it.
They will nerf it, it's only a matter of time ;) |

Nevyn Auscent wrote: Unless you have an unusual fit, they bring enough to kill you in highsec no matter what your tank, so concord doesn't save you.
This entire paragraph is demonstratably untrue. Im sorry that you feel its this way, and you can take this as an opinion if you want, but its just wrong. You have just said "Why bother defending myself at all? Bigger boys will always come." Thats a pretty defeatist attitude right there. Are you aware of how many Catalysts have to hit you simultaneously to take out a 54,000ehp Proc before CONCORD turns up?
Additional: if you are mining for yield, why are your drones anything but mining drones?
Nevyn Auscent wrote:Also if we are talking solo, you don't have a hauler alt anyway. You have to multibox to use a hauler alt regardless, so could multibox it doing something else. And if the hauler alt could make more money doing something else with no skills.... then you still loose money using it to haul. The only situation a hauler alt doesn't loose money is in the large fleet scenario. Yes because making isk and not spending it is the purpose of EvE this is the point Ive been trying to work up to. The hauler alt exists to keep your miner secure NOT to boost your isk, though he can suppliment your income by means your mining character cant.
Nevyn Auscent wrote:So, back to the original point.
And I disagree. Lower Risk before Increased Isk means that less people will complain that Gankers are "ruining the game". Believe it or not, my view is informed by a wish for every playstyle to exist together. Players cannot blame their unwillingness to defend themselves as a reason that others play should be limited or removed. Which doesn't mean that there isn't still plenty of reason to use a retriever. You can use a retriever without complaining that gankers are ruining the game.
(Also depending on sec space, I believe 4 Catalysts can do that Proc kill, though they aren't throw away alts that get recycled against CCP rules to do it with only 4) |

Interesting how real life has an influence on one's gaming.
People mentioned here how they set-up their ships for maximum output to "grind" out for that monthly plex. These people seem to have it calculated that x hours of mining y type of rock should generate z amount of isk.
A friend of mine that started as a miner does not follow any "opportunity costs" and may or may not mine and if he does, does not always go for the most bang for your buck rocks either. Since he does not live in the game and does not worry about having to acquire a monthly plex, he pays with hard cash. And last I saw of his set-up, he had his ship like a brick wall since he lived through past Hulkaggeddon events and rather be safe than sorry.
So I guess it depends on where you want to "work" - in game or real life. |

Uh.. no. Most large mining operations will ally themselves with ganking corps for both protection and help in eliminating your compitition. Believe me if there is shiny orca and hulk KM's to be had, they will be lining up for the opportunity. Then again that would actually mean you have to interact with other players....
And to be honest with you the major ganking corps/alliances like code. all they are trying to get you to do is interact with others and to actually play the game, not sit there for hours on end sitting there like a robot, mining AFK....

I gank retrievers and coverters myself as well... When faced with a 20 man ISOboxing skiff fleet? Yeah, time to get on the bat phone for that and since I have an alt that is in T1 production, I usually provide the hulls needed for any ganks I try to contract out so I don't normally have an issue requesting for help when needed.

to be fair, if you're faced with a fleet of skiffs, gank the orca.
in terms of cost to gank vs how much ore they won't be mining... ganking the orca is the best bang for your buck. orca isn't going to have over 300k ehp, which is about 3 well tanked skiffs. when you gank an orca each skiff loses 1/3 of it's yield. fleet of 20 skiffs? ganking 1 orca is the same as ganking nearly 7 skiffs, for a fraction of the cost.
not to mention, after the orca goes pop they'll probably dock up anyway. you've shown that you can take out the biggest brick on grid. |

I used to run L4; and the quickest/ most profitable way is to total 'Bling' out your ship, but this choice comes with increased risk. The risk outweighed the ISK gained for me, so I ran them slower.
The Retriever is more profitable, but at a significantly increased risk.

Why? What circumstances have changed?
Serene Repose wrote:Either the ships should be harder to kill, or the ramifications should be more severe for the ganker(s).
Then I have fantastic news for you! CCP have given you a variety of tools to address both of these points. Unfortunately, they don't sell spines in the nex store though, so you'll have to supply your own.
Also, pretty sure that suicide ganking is one of a number of parts of the game that devs aren't allowed to play, which might explain some of the choices they've made in the past. No, your rights end in optimal+2*falloff |

Serene Repose wrote:Your stupidity aside. I don't mine. I think being able to gank miners under present circumstances is ridiculous. Either the ships should be harder to kill, or the ramifications should be more severe for the ganker(s). Always said that. Always will say that. Eve is a game of choices, you can choose to mine in a ship that's hard to kill at the cost of a little yield, such as a Skiff or Procurer, or you can choose to mine in a ship that maximises yield, at the cost of being easier to kill.
The tools are already there, it's not the gankers fault that you choose not to use them. Choices like everything else in Eve, carry consequences.
Quote:In fact, it's so egregious, one must assume the devs and CCP staff are involved in the ganking themselves. As far as I know CCP staff are discouraged, if not forbidden, from indulging in the darker paths available within Eve. They have to be seen as above reproach by both their peers, and their customers.

Dear CCP:
When you changed the mining ships (giving one of them the EHP of a BATTLESHIP), i and others told you "many of them won't care about the defensive options you give them, they will continue to fly flimsy 'yield boats' to make the best isk per hour and continue to complain about being easy to gank until you give THEIR ship BS lvl EHP...which will mollify them for a week tops then they'll ask for more and more because that's who they are"
I offer the above quoted post as proof of our assertion.

I fixed your post for you. They're only much much easier to kill if people are AFK, watching faptube in another window etc. Situational awareness is key.
I mine, occasionally; I have Procurers, Skiffs and a couple of Mackinaws. Their use is situational, if I'm busy plundering other peoples wormholes or solo mining I use a Procurer or Skiff, if I have Orca support, especially with a shield harmonising link I'll use a Mackinaw, the fit I use packs around 30K EHP against blasters before any boosts.
It's a case of using the right tool for the job.
