So, being a new player, I was goofing around with the map, plotting courses all over, and I stumbled on this system, while trying to plot a course from Caldari to Minmatar space. It has an awful lot of ships and pods blown up in the last day, so I'm guessing it must be pirate central. Is it pretty much insta-death for a newer player like myself to venture through there? Would a quick frigate with some WCS help, or am I better off just going the long way around, if I wanted to visit Minmatar space?

If you go there right after down time and make instas you should be fine. Atleast in a frig.

Make an ALT on your account. Buy him/her a shuttle (or five) and have at making your BMs. Be sure to base a clone for him in the nearest system to Rancer you can so if you get podded you wake up there. No worries bout buying clones so no waste of money there.
Copy the BMs and escrow them to your main.
If you want to save money just make the BMs with his newb ship. Take a bit longer and easier to kill but then it is zero waste of cash.
When done delete the character or keep him/her as you please.

actualy, i passed through rancer just the other day with my alt (accidental, if i knew rancer was in the route i'd have avoided it). i saw a LOT of corpses, but... asides from myself, local was completely empty
rancer is usualy camped though, i think the local corp was Tundragon, something like that. was amusing to find rancer empty though

Hehehe...very clever. I might be new, but I'm not falling for that :P.
Thanks for the replies, maybe it'll be good practice to see if I can make some instas or something in a rookie ship. I don't really care if I get blown up, as I have nothing to lose right now anyway.
Besides, I'm going to try my hand at a little piracy myself once I grow up. YAAARR!

I went through Rancer and found the gate camped. I went boom! This was awhile back though  . I accidentally bought something from there and didn't check the map or the sec warning...nor did I have bm's or anything.
Wow, I used to be dumb.

While rancer is very friendly, real hardcore mining should be done in otou.

Just a few systems I was always told to stay out of when I was in the newbie corp; was Rancer, Old Man Star, and Egghlende(sp--I cant remeber how to spell that).

Rancer isn't bad at all if you pay attention.. Ive only run into maybe 3 gatecamps there in the pats month... and they couldnt get me because well they suck :P
Except for last week when I AFKed from rorsins to jita... I was in the bathroom while my autopilot took me along, thats how safe I felt in that area.

Rancer is not that bad i passed through the other day on AP, low sec isn't that bad, at least ppl cant us warp bubbles they r as nightmare

With instas, my main passes through there all the time. Never been bothered. Never done it in a ship smaller than a ferox. A buddy died via smartbomb in a frig.

So you'll need bm's even then you can still get popped if it's timed correctly.

I've been killed a few times in rancer last time in my manticore silly me thought 0 kills in the last hour would mean it was fine to go there but i think my cloak failed due to corpses at least i got away in my pod and got out just after dt when i got out of bed
