okay... so, CCP censors us from seeing words such as **** and **** due to the Teen rating on the game, yet the feel it's perfectly reasonable to endorse a promotion that encourages minors to sign-up to an online gambling site? Jesus christ :/
Who is this "Al G.Rhytym"? Who is "Think Star"? Why has this been given a sticky without any official word from CCP?
And just so you know, the EVE forums are completely public so everyone viewing can see the password.

yes they need the password listed on the linkage here
yes even non-eve people can play in the tournament if they use the above password.
great idea though:):):)

CCP is not involved in this in any way, but have graciously allowed us to post information about this tournament here on the forums.
Furthermore, all under age players will not be able or allowed to create an account. This is stated in our rules and regulations section and in our policy statement.
We do not allow underage gambling in any meaning of the word. If there is a fraud ( underage winner ) the Prizes are payed out to the runner up.
Furthermore we did not add any cash prizes, and there is no entry fee, the tournaments are completely free to enter which makes this tournament series more appealing, this truly is intended as an event that should give our players change to win cool stuff (shipped to their door step) in a game of cards.
We appreciate your concerns.

Edited by: Sarmaul on 26/05/2006 23:17:21 I was wondering if you could prahaps tell me a little about the history and reputation of 4kings.com, as Google has a grand total of 22 hits for "4kings.com", most of which seem to refer to the online gaming clan. Further-more, it doesn't seem able to find a single website that links to 4kings.com. For an online gambling site to have no online presence, you'll understand my suspicions.
Finally, I did a domain lookup on 4kings.com and it seems that the website is hosted in Iceland. CCP is also an Icelandic company. Any chance you could tell us if there is a relationship between 4kings.com and CCP, and how this promotion came to be?

when someone from the marketing department available next, could you please ask them to explain how a website with no internet presence has people winning 46,793 euros in 24 hours? don't forget to ask about the website domain being registered in iceland too.

I hate to be pesimistic and anti-productive, but as they are 'piggy backing' a very well known clan, what will happen if this is a scam? Considering it involves real life money afaik

We do not allow underage gambling in any sense of the word. If there is fraud (i.e. an underage winner) the Prizes will be paid out to the runner up.

The tournaments are at the same time as advertised. CET spells Central European time.
Our poker client can be adjusted to your current time zone (some computers do that automatically) so we included the tournament schedule in EVE time also.

Edited by: Sarmaul on 27/05/2006 16:27:08 Edited by: Sarmaul on 27/05/2006 16:26:20 So, how come my posts regarding the morality and legality of a promotion associated with a teen-rated game which involves getting minors to download propriety software and gamble online were deleted?
I can fully understand removing my questions about the origin of 4kings.com as they have been answered by Keiron and other people, but the ethical points still stand. Either that, or stop censoring *****, ****, **** and all the other words designed to protect the teens playing this game.
As for preventing teens from signing up, the only verification performed involves asking for the age of the person. That's it. No credit card validation (which is generally recognised as an accepted method of authenticating adults), just a "what is your date of birth" box. There maybe more checks inside the propriety software, but there is no way in hell I'm installing that **** (oh no naughty word censor it) onto my PC.
Finally, as I stated in my posts that were deleted, anyone is free to join the promotion as the EVE-Online forums are public - you only need to be registered to post, not read.
Surely something as controversial as this should've been handled slightly better than with an unknown character with 2 previous posts to his name who got a sticky with no moderator or dev approval in the thread, has a noob character posting as a representative of 4kings, and only got a dev post when I drew Keiron to my concerns in another thread (concerns which were then promptly deleted)?

Ok, I think everyone has to calm down here a bit. There are some facts you should recognize before critizing this:
1. Entry is free! 2. You play with chips, not money, no money is involved. That means you play for free! 3. If you win, you win stuff, good stuff, free stuff! You don't win money! 4. Since I can't say this enough, you don't have to pay anything to play at all! 5. You don't have to pay any shipping, handling, customs fees or any form of taxes related to the prize, it is all covered by 4kings.
The only difference between this and playing poker in school for matches is that you actually get something if you win. However, you don't lose anything.
This is a TEEN rated forum, but we did announce the Fan Fest on it, and that is also something which is restricted to 18 y olds and above.
As for morals of playing poker, you are free to start your own thread on it in the Out Of Pod Experience forum, but it is off topic for this thread.

You can go to - poker - promotions and click read more link number 2 with no subject.
We are sorry for any inconvinience this might have for you and I can assure you this will be taken care of asap.
On the other hand we still have plenty of seats available so do signup for an account -> download the poker client -> sign in the poker client -> click tournaments tab -> scroll down to EVE OPT (there are 3 of them and you may sign up for all of them) and use the eve password provited above to register.

Here are few tips for you to read and keep in mind while playing this poker tournament:
There are many ways to go about developing your playing style in tournament poker.
Some players play passive - aggressive: This means that they don't play many hands but the hands they decide to play they will play at full throttle.
We also have the maniac: He plays almost every hand and he plays them all full throttle, you never know what this player has in store but this player is someone you want to play against any day. Just wait for your best hand AK or AA and then go against him.
There is no one correct way to play poker although some methods are preferred and suggested. Texas Hold'em is a game that takes minutes to learn but lifetime to master.
Playing tight - aggressive is suggested by all good tournament players, we also suggest it. á The normal raise is 3 times the big blind and follow up is 70% of the pot. Never get carried away, and if you think you are beat just fold and move on to the next hand.
The EVE tournaments have 15 minute blinds which means you have plenty of time to get a decent hand.
Beginners are advised while getting the feel for the game to play mostly pairs and AK AQ AJ and then test the waters when you feel confident enough to challenge the table.
THE FIRST TOURNAMENT START IN 15 MINUTES (next one in 4 hours and 15 minutes and the last in in 8 hours 15 minutes) á Good luck and have fun!

After to many loosing hands i ended up as 13th but i had real fun, good players and a good game host! All kudos to 4king.com for this pleasure!
For all thoose that know some about poker, take your chance and install that poker client and register you for the second tournament - its not to late for that - if you are really unlucky you can win a computer!
So far i have just got a lot of fun, good talk to the GM and not a hazzle )
Tho the timers was 15 minutes long, im not really used to that but it gives us non pro poker players a bit more of the fun and it takes longer to loose that 5k chip pile.
Good luck everyone and see you at the second tournament!!

Worked great so far, busted ut at like 30th in the first round tho.
One complaint, u have a flaw in the rules that allows allready qualified plyers to enter the later rounds thus making it so they can grab 2 of the slot for the final, doubt this was intended and if it is i would like to know how u motivate this.

If you qualify 2 times to the finals there will be one less in the finals to compete with and you get two timecards instead of one =)

Yes but that's what im saying, i dunno about u but i know i rather see the full amount of players actualy plying the finals (if im in it or not is besides the point) instead of the thoretical 7 players that it could become.

I must admit I had my concerns when this first showed up here. But I did check up on this company and had a chat with Think Star about it. I've also watched some of the games myself, and checked out the site.
From what I can see, this is an appreciated event, the participants are having fun and some wants this type of thing to happen again. Of course, that would be up to 4kings and CCP.

Fared a bit better this round - top 1/3rd.
But got bit bad again.
Was all in with Aces.
Opponent (at the time overall chip leader) gets a flush on the river
Was fun though.
Would *love* to see a thing like this again.
Especially because of the EVE related prizes - and it beeing limited to EVE players as well (yes others could snatch up the code - Not sure how to 'control' that if this really takes of)
Would like to see a bit more advance notice though. Had it been announced a good week (or two) before hand, I'm sure there would have been alot more players. (and I'm guessing that's whats 'in it' for 4kings giving away prizes for free like this. Namely attracting playes to the casino, and hoping some will stay around and play for real cash :) - Which is cool.)

None - Eve players can't win prizes.. We ask all winners to confirm their EVE username. (its ok to have a trial account this time arround)

Hopethat more tournements like this will be held in the future, now I just need to stay awakefor one last shot at the final.

Aww, I failed at the second satellite too. My mates keep winning timecards though. I'll be watching the finals. We would all definitely LOVE to see more of this in the future \o/
By the way, a question. Are the timecards only 100 day ones? (Just so there are no negative surprises)

The first round was my first poker tournament ever (RL and virtual), and I made no 46. I learned quite a bit, though and ended up as no 6 at my second try - qualified for the final !
Great organisation, helpful GMs and stable software - I lost connection once, needed to close and reboot the client and could commence like nothing happened.

This is what i meant with my previous posts, me and Pez got knocked at the same time and where 12/13th i think and this with atleast 2 players allready qualified so now the final will be short on players from what was inteded.
So yeah sux a bit, would most likely have lost in the final game if i got there but would have felt a whole lot better then not getting there due to that a couple of players got 2 seats that they can't even play

Edited by: Felix Cole on 29/05/2006 09:06:55 The people running this arent doing this just cause they like EVE. They are doing it to bring more traffic and prospective gamblers to there site to play the other games that arent free.
This is turn promotes gambling and makes it attractive to people who dont normally play. People will go to the site and see other things that catch there eye and give it a shot, and lose real money.
If you want to call me names fine. Maybe a moderator will do something about it *shrug* who knows.
However my point is that if you take off your rose coloured glasses and see this really as just blatant cross promotion to attract new gamblers to there website intsead of a way to give EVE players some fun you might see why this isnt so great.
Gambling is a addiction like cigarettes and I think a company like CCP is silly associating themselves with this competition no matter how fun it is.

I admit I have always been suspicious of online gambling clients. But since CCP checked it out, supported this initiative, and people who analyze their outgoing traffic didn't report anything suspicious being sent, I went ahead and signed up. I was also pleased to see that no credit card information is needed to play for free.

Felix - drinking Cola is just as much a root to an addiction and I'm pretty sure most the EVE player base drinks that.
I know for a fact that most of my corpmates (almost 500) drinks beer, that is also addictive.
I have to go drive 200 miles in a moment - driving is the most dangerous way of transporting yourself and guess what - I know most the EVE playerbase drives (or gets driven) ...
Lets all ***** and moan about stuff that can potentially and only theoretically harm us and block people from enjoying life - that's a grand idea .... NOT.

I thought I gave a constructive and concise reason why I thought this was a bad promotion to support on CCPs behalf. Obviously my first post was dripping with sarcasim and for that I apologise but I dont think that either post has been a whine.
Perhaps you could give some reasons why im wrong that relate to gambling rather then just bringing up cola products and driving examples as to why Gambling is healthy over the internet and why CCP are doing its customers a service promoting such activities?
Please enlighten me as to why this is good for the EVE community..

First off - gambling requires you to gamble money - In this case nobody is paying for anything.
Secondly - it was immense fun as it was poker with EVE players you've met and hadnt met also the chat in the poker were even more busy and fun than the poker itself.
Thirdly - You are assuming that because 4Kings are hosting a closed poker tournament on their servers that some EVE players are going to be addicted to gambling - that is simply ignorant and an insulting to the EVE players comon sense and level of integrity.
I think you should worry abot yourself and less about everyone else - my analogies were spot on as it was highlighting your points about stuff that is theoretically a problem but not practically.
In any case - if you dont like it for some oddly reasoning outside logic and common sense - at least keep it to yourself instead of coming down on CCP for doing something GOOD for the player base.
To sum up - FACTS:
EVE Players liked this event. A single individual has been moaning on the forums (heh, nothing unsual there, cant please everyone). 4Kings did an excellent job. The tournament is/was FREE and FUN. Nobody got addicted to gambling.

The only thing i dont like very much is the date on the finals. Its driving me in some truble to have it on the 1 June. Wouldt it have been much more staight forward to have the final just a week later on same weekday? Overlaping dates would be less probably in that way and sunday ist most time the peak day for EVE too.

Well, after playing in the first qualifier and going out 19th after having been 9th, then going out of the seccond 35th after having been 4th in chips for a little while, I can say that this eve poker tournament is grand
I've never played a poker tournament before, but all those nights watching the poker chanel must have helped [;)]
Gotta say I'm happy Khatred got through in the third qualifier, after getting him down to 300 chips in the seccond with an exceptionally lucky three on the river putting a pair on the board to beat his aces and dueces (became threes) ten kicker with my aces and threes king kicker (all in on ace king suited)... if he hadn't gone through he might have stopped selling me HACs . As it happened managed to be 5th largest stack when the first through third all turned up at my tabble... and they nicked all my chips hehehe
This poker bussiness is almost as good as PVP! yarbqhedghogs!
More tournaments sez I!! ----

Well I had a hell of a time Certainly beat the usual poker tournaments, the banter was what I've come to expect from eve - mature and witty.. Rather than the usual "wtf - 9 high? What you doin beating me with them cards?" you get at other tables.
I'd certainly sign up for another bout. And as for the addiction, I used to play on-line poker before I came to eve.. Swapped one addiction for another I'd still be losing money at poker if I weren't now running missions in my spare time. Yay Eve!

Estimate the average age. The average age is not what i call kids. There are rarely people playing under 16. Why? Because EVE is complex and kids don't survive in this kids-hating-community.
And if you can drink or drive, you are able to decied wether to gamble or not.
And on top of that, parents should look over the shoulder of their young children. If they don't that isnt CCP's fault, its the parents fault.
So now hush and back in your straightjacket, who let you out anyway.

Yes that may be the case, but as the links I have posted show, Online Gambling such as this is a way to start the ball rolling for younger people and get them addicted sooner, hence one of the reasons I am against it.

Originally by: Felix Cole Yes Gambling is fun. Hence why it can BECOME a addiction.
Yes, this is taken out of context, but does anyone else but me find the quote funny? Anyone? Oh well, fun things naturally incline you to do it again. Is it a problem?
We know that gambling is looked down upon, just as drinking and smoking is. But those who can play in this tournament are responsible adults. There is too much stuff on the Internet you wouldn't like people to experience. CCP allowed this, people liked it. Concerning CCP thinking about Eve's younger players, they can't participate and everyone is happy.

Felix, I understand your concern and it is good that people like you exist, admonishing some basic morals in life.
However, your anti-gambling crusade is somewhat misplaced in an environment which actually exists because people play for gambling, since eve-online is more or less exactly that. People playing eve-online are very unlikely to jump on a gambling-hate-wagon, they are already immersed by a special kind of online gambling.
I personally believe you would better focus your efforts on drugs like nicotin or alcohol, which are much more dangerous for kids then online gambling, imho.

Pride I didnt reply instantly to it sorry as Ive been cooking and eating dinner. I acctually thought you made some very valid points. However while I can accept some of what your saying about parents responabilities etc, the problem as I see it is that it isnt so cut and dried in my opinion.
I do agree parents need to be more proactive in there approach to the internet, but I also think the companies supplying services such as computer game companies (since games are so attractive to younger audiences) are also responsible for the content of there games and also there message boards.
You can see CCP taking a responsability for its boards by the simple fact it has blocked certain swear words, and has moderators to make sure the rules are followed who modify or delete certain content here. That in itself shows they are willing to take a stand against behaviour that is not suitable to protect there customer base. So why would they allow gambling advertising?
To me it seems very irresponsable for a Computer gaming company who supplies services to children and adults to help advertise for online gambling companies and competitions they host.
As for the debate that EVE is a game where you take a gamble just leaving space, thats all good and well, but you are not terribly likely to get yourself in real life financial trouble or start yourself down a road of a very harmful addiction doing so.
I do understand it was just a fun competition for most of our community and Im sorry if I have offended people, but I honestly think CCP needs to take even a small amount of responability in protecting there customers.
I cant really bring up smoking or other vices since it doesnt exactly relate to the topic at hand.

Furthermore, all under age players will not be able or allowed to create an account. This is stated in our rules and regulations section and in our policy statement.
We do not allow underage gambling in any sense of the word. If there is fraud (i.e. an underage winner) the Prizes will be paid out to the runner up.
Furthermore we did not add any cash prizes, because there is not an entry fee, the tournament is completely free to enter. As a result, this tournament series should be more appealing. We intend this to be an event that gives the EVE Community an opportunity to win cool stuff (shipped to their door step) in a game of cards.
We appreciate your concerns.
I agree underage gambling is wrong, if an underage person wins the first prize then they forfet dont they. I think FREE competitions like this are a boost to eve. I would agree with the above post if we had to pay for it unless it was in isk lol.

Edited by: Felix Cole on 29/05/2006 14:43:37 What concerns me is that this thread shows no negatives to gambling at all. Fine its a free competition, but its being held on a site where gambling for real money takes place.
As for comparing this to FanFest advertising, the fanfest was a CCP run, 4Kings Poker competitions arent as CCP clearly stated.
It promotes gambling, not EVE and not once has CCP shown any responsability by warning people of the risks of gambling.

Im in agreement, ccp allowing a gambling company to come into a closed community and promote their products isn't great.. but it's easy to understand.. ccp are in the business of making money
But arguing the downsides gets you nowhere in a thread such as this.. cool things were on offer, people had fun out of it....
You were ofc right with your first post, you should have just left it at that.....
What would ofc be nice to know.... did money change hands between 4kings and ccp....
Or is this some future practice.. where we see more of this sort of thing.. between ccp and 3rd party companys being allowed to exploit the playerbase with these types of offers or promotions...?

We here at 4kings appreciate your feedback and concerns. In future tournaments, we need to be more explicit that itÆs for adults over 18; and over 21 in relevant jurisdictions.
I will state here once more that CCP is not involved in this in any way, but have graciously allowed us to post information about this tournament here on the forums.

Originally by: Wrangler Ok, I think everyone has to calm down here a bit.
EDIT: Some errors have been fixed on their site, which means we deleted the post concerning those errors. Feel free to post if you experience any problems in the future though.

The site is for over 18 only and this is made perfectly clear!! If you're under 18 wanted to go gamble, go on the interweb, you will find loads of adverts and references to it other than this (rather petite) reference here.
Honestly, some people just aren't happy unless they have something to moan about. Years ago they would be the Mary Whitehouses of the world writing in to complain about seeing a ***** on TV.

No one is saying you can't post about gambling, or why CCP allows this event. All I'm saying is that it is off topic for this thread. If you feel so strongly about it, go create your own thread and discuss it there, provided it follows the rules we're certainly not going to stop you.
However, since that type of discussion is off topic for this thread it will be deleted. Discussing moderator actions is not allowed and will be deleted. I'll allow the posts up until now, but future posts of this nature will be removed and you may be warned. Posts discussing this post will be considered discussing moderation and that will be removed as well.

I'd like to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the qualifiers. I played in all 3 and qualified in the last one (phew!).
I'd love to see another tournament like this, definitely a good thing.
Regarding the tournament date, I don't think this should be changed. When you entered the qualifier you knew the final was on the 1st June and thats about it. You can't just go around changing dates because it doesn't suit you :)
Good luck to the other 24 in the Final!

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 30/05/2006 03:13:19 Yes, how about you just change the qualifiers to get me into the finals, you want the best players don't you?
By the way, how many entered these freerolls and how many qualified from each?

A rouch estimate of 85 people in the first and third satellites, and 100 in the second one. Top 9 from each satellite went through to the finals, so 10% got timecards.
Most of the players I've talked to yesterday have missed this event. I'm sure there will be at least three times as many, if given a next time.

The problem was that this was only announced here in this forum and most people read the flame...err Corporation and Alliance forums not this. I actually just found out before I logged off the night before.
Be sure to spam every EVE fansite with the poster and all the finalists, email them with the info next time - I know I wouldnt mind letting people know.
Also I'd like to volunteer for some ground work WHEN you host a tournament again (notice the WHEN not IF).

If denzil cant other days than the 1st I'd say it's extremly unfair to move it. That qualified people cant make the final on it's original date is just too bad - it was announced before they entered.
If everyone can play on another date then sure - move it, else dont.

We expect there will be allot of fun, excitement and some serious poker played by our finalists.
Remember that you are only at panic point when your chip stack goes below 10x the big blind and since the blind periods are 15 minutes! you truly are able to play your best poker and not rely to much on lady luck.
4Kings wishes everybody all the best and we look forward to send the grand prize to our winner who will be crowned EVE OPT I Champion.

Seriously though, thanks to 4 Kings for organising it, and so professionally and graciously as well in the face of some flack. Whether you agree with it or not, those that played enjoyed it and lets hope there can be another event like it.

For future tourneys:
More depth to the prizes. a 10k computer for 1st and a t-shirt for 2nd-25th is a bit extreme. The prize curve should be a curve, not a cliff.

Congrats denzilmaso! Was a real good event hosted by 4Kings.
I hope we will see more eve-poker rounds in the future. I would have two litle suggestions for the next tournament.
1st, iam sure it would have attracted more players if the announcement would have been on a broader base and a bit longer ahead. Not everyone is reading the forum on a daily base.
2nd the prizes for the winners/finalists, I like it to have one real great winner price like this hot gaming machine. But i would also love to see some sort of ranking in the prize table. Like for beeing a EVE - tournament, something like rising isk wins for the final table. Must not bee something too uber, just to see a litle difference to be proud about from beeing 3rd or beeing 13th.
Erodmos
PS: And for the 4Knings GMs, for another poker match, keep like you have been in this rounds, you made a real great job.
