At least it had some hilarious lines for Slim Pickens as the little junky robot.
I always found it strange that the lead was Maximillian Schell....and the evil robot was named Maximillian as well. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

That's because the actor playing him was Louis Gossett Jr.
The short story did not imply black at all, and your "dark complected" also applies to Hispanics, etc, so why are you just jumping to "black".
The character is just an alien from elsewhere. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

I'm talking less about Enemy Mine and more about District 9, but I really feel that both stories were trying to compare an alien with black people. And him being played by Louis Gossett isn't what I'm talking about. Sure, it was obvious that there was a black guy in the suit, but there were plenty of other subtle hints that had nothing to do with the actor. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. WORST BY FAR: I recently forced myself to watch Star Trek: Into Darkness despite not having watched it previously because of what people had said about it. So sadly...they were all right. :( Never have I had such a reaction to any movie. I thought "Nooooo! abrams, what have you done!?" Makes me highly concerned about Star Wars...
BEST: Everything Star Trek that built up a universe over the decades abrams bligthly destroys in the name of vapid rapid crap.

It really makes me sad when so-called Trekkers watch JJ Abrams' monstrosity and actually say that they are relieved he didn't break any of the elements that make it Star Trek. Just what did they "break" in the first one ? It was a different universe, and I didn't mind anything too different. And I watched the original broadcast of the original series. I was not bothered by a thing.

I liked Avatar, but to me it was a fantasy adventure. I guess I never took it as a sci-fi, and sorta didn't realize people think of it as a sci-fi till after I watched it, so maybe that saved it for me. It doesn't really have any sci-fi elements, just space and future themes re-hashed from other works. Well, the idea of having remote-controlled bodies is kinda sci-fi until they dispense with every last shred of reality and allow the remote controlled unit to become the guy's new body, as if they couldn't just go and physically unplug him. Avatar is science fiction, not fantasy. There's nothing that has an actual "it's magic" explanation, at least from the audience's perspective (though "unobtanium" comes close).

Granted there are other science fiction movies that step right up to the line: Dark City comes to mind.

Don't mess with the Kubrick
Of course, when the sequel was made in the 80's, it was based on Arthur C Clarke's novel, and doesn't really use any of the conceits of the original. Except for monolith, here given a purpose not hinted at in the original, there really are not any ties to the original. Best is a tie between Blade Runner and Spaceballs.
I watched Dune again last week. Hadn't seen it years. It was certainly an 80's movie. They tried. I think they really did, but it was really cheesy there in many places. However, it wasn't as bad as "The Black Hole". Now that was awful.
