To be clear, I'm talking about the genre, not the channel.
BEST: 2001 A Space Odyssey. Do I really need to qualify this decision?
WORST: Spaceballs. Not just because it's a weak and groan-inducingly painful riff on Star Wars, but because it's a depressing example of Mel Brooks post-greatness which can't hold a candle to his superior spoofs like Young Frankenstein (candle? gettit? someone?) and Blazing Saddles.
How 'bout you?

Best: Aliens.
I mean come on .... it's ALIENS.

Worst: Hmmm...
Honestly? There is no single Sci-fi movie that stands out to me personally as particularly bad to the point of being note-worthy. So I have to pass. Major (Ret.) Caldari Militia | Part-time wormhole pirate | Full-time super model Gÿá Wormhole Diary | GÖí #420roloswag

Aliens was the inspiration for, and fore-father of, modern mainstream stuff like Prometheus
(Which was actually a pretty cool movie).

I admit that I did indeed adore Aliens when I was a young upstart, but the older I got the more I gravitated toward Alien (the first) as the superior product. The franchise is relatively solid in my book (and I do have a soft spot for the directors cut of Alien 3 though can do without the fourth "official" sequel) and I wholly discount the AvP spinoffs and the equally soul-crushing Prometheus. It's very telling that I'm more looking forward to the Alien: Isolation video game than I am to the Prometheus sequel, but I have been wrong before...

Couldn't agree more - other than the part about the first movie, Alien. While a fantastic film I never gravitated toward it like I did the second movie. Third was good too. Fourth was just ... uhgg. But I think with Prometheus they kinda did it justice, personally.
And agree with AvP. The Predator series was fantastic up to the second movie. Beyond that it just went to hell ... Major (Ret.) Caldari Militia | Part-time wormhole pirate | Full-time super model Gÿá Wormhole Diary | GÖí #420roloswag

I think the problem with Prometheus was that everyone (myself included) set the bar way too high for it, and therefore were far more critical of its faults than it perhaps deserved. Some nitpicks are legit though, like the Old May Weyland makeup and some of the decisions regarding the crew's investigation of the engineer complex. It's still a visual masterpiece and I liked it enough to add to the blu-ray collection, so that's something. The original script that definitively tied Prometheus to the Alien prequels was superior to the version that ultimately made it to the screen; hopefully the sequel will get things back on track.
And then there's Sir Ridley's (and Harrison Ford's) return to Blade Runner...

You're probably quite right.
Personally I wasn't following Prometheus's development and filming beforehand. I don't really seem to pay much attention to the entertainment industry anymore, so when the movie came out I didn't really know anything about it other than some common rumors of it's connection to the Alien franchise, so I found it quite spectacular with a good storyline that didn't completely **** over all the films that had come before it (unlike what happens with so many other prequels/sequels these days).
Another favorite would be Event Horizon. That movie gave me chills the first time I saw it, and is one I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it.

BEST: 2001 A Space Odyssey. Do I really need to qualify this decision? Oh from that top 20 list, yeah probably 2001. It probably had more impact than any other film as far as for driving interest towards technological advancement in our culture and inspiring film makers with their own science-fiction productions. A sci-fi movie that just attempted to be as technically accurate as it could be within the story, and succeeded.
My personal favorite though is Blade Runner. An excellent flick in the realm of cyberpunk.
Worst... Maybe as far as disappointment, Wing Commander. yeah, some peeps will say "but that was great!", but it really flopped pretty badly, and it was bad, and not even making it as a cult classic, and it was bad... and I don't mean good-bad, but just... bad. |

I think Space Odyssey is in some way similar to Prometheus. Monolith: similarity to goo made by Engineers. Engineers steering evolution - Monolith having presumably same effects. Questions about our destiny, in both films, but in Odyssey they are somewhat camouflaged. You don't get final answer in both. Actually Space Odyssey was and is to this day somewhat unanderstood, as to what Monolith is, similar to what goo is. What makes Odyssey overwhelming even now is great Visuals, IMAGERY, something what Prometheus have too, but, they made this young actor play himself characterized and it looks awful, contrasting, and the point is...
...what ruins prometheus is those small things, and you have a feeling that this film is a bunch of ramblings. When weapons, technology, and economies mature faster than the leadership culture entrusted with them, disaster ensues. http://i.minus.com/ibeZ0sJewvDMBN.gif |

Yeeah, Prometheus wasn't bad. Wasn't epic, but it had a story going for it. The tie-in to Alien really helped it out a lot. Not that that always works... didn't care for that last AvP movie.
Yes, Battlefield Earth was just horrible. Fortunately I had no expectations, knew it was going to be horrible from the start, before release. So... wasn't disappointed lol But wasn't able to watch in more than once, and even then it was hard to make it though to the end. The thing with Wing Commander, I really wanted to like it, really tried, watched it a number of times. But just couldn't |

"2001: A Space Odyssey" is hands down the Best.
Worst is a different matter. Does one stay with somewhat decent productions, or go ahead and include the vast array of those that are MST3K worthy ?
For major productions, I have to go with "Battlefield Earth".
For most destructive SF film, I must go with "Alien 3". Killed that franchise in one swift stroke. "He has mounted his hind-legs, and blown crass vapidities through the bowel of his neck."-á - Ambrose Bierce on Oscar Wilde's Lecture in San Francisco 1882 |

Personal favourtite will always be Bladerunner, but a lot of what has already been mentioned is up there too. I'm a bit worried this new sequel will disappoint as Prometheus did. I'm not sure Ridley Scott is making films with the same impact he had early on (just goes to show success can be a bad thing).
Tron (the original) and Donnie Darko are worth a mention. Shamefully, I watched John Carter recently and really enjoyed it too :P
Worst: T3, Batman and Robin (lol), Star Wars 1-3, Aliens 3, AVP Requiem
Stand alone movies, not that many I suppose. If they are so terrible I've probably never bothered, but franchises/sequels always have a few duffs. TO THE RIPARDMOBILE! |

Bear in mind he is 78 this year. Energy, and mental focus......well, ya know.
Also, remember that in the middle of filming Prometheus, his brother the director Tony Scott literally jumped off a bridge. So, he was probably a mess. They had made over 2500 commercials together before either even went into movies.
"Gladiator" (1999) seems to have now been the last hurrah. His return to ancient times "Exodus: Gods and Kings" later this year may tell the rest of this story. If he wants to play at DeMille, I hope the cheesy spectacle is toned down......and not 4 hours long either. Not only is 2001 the greatest sci-fi movie, it is THE GREATEST FILM OF ALL TIME. Of course that's my opinion. But I just think it's an absolute masterpiece. A true work of art.
But, I feel like you hold Blazing Saddles in such a high regard just because of it's name and hype and I don't understand why you bash Spaceballs so much. Spaceballs hardly qualifies as a sci-fi movie. It's a satire, of course it isn't going to be great for science fiction lovers. It was still funny, I think it was a good one, and a classic. Young Frankenstein is good too but again I think you're just going by an "older is better" operation here. The whole farting scene in blazing saddles isn't even that funny. For Worst Sci-FI film, I am going to nominate Attack of the Clones
So many problems with this movie. It doesn't even qualify as a Star Wars movie. George is a total idiot.
I won't even go into it too much, and I probably don't have to, but it was boring, stupid, and had a lot of bad acting as well. Yoda hopping around fighting Count Dooku (what a dumb name ) was just embarrassing. Padme and Anakin's love scenes were sickening.
The worst thing was how horribly they disfigured Boba Fett's character with this film. Boba Fett used to be this mysterious badass figure, he was the greatest bounty hunter in the galaxy. You didn't know who he was, you knew from his armor he was some forgotten relic of the clone wars and a deadly warrior with a dark past.
Oh guess what, turns out EVERY storm trooper is a clone of Boba Fett, his dad's name is Jango and he's a complete goof who wears this crappy blue version of Boba's armor.
Damn did they ever ruin that character and that franchise. Such a huge disappointment. I could rant about that bullshit trilogy all day, I am that scarred and butthurt from it. "Nothing is more surprising than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few." David Hume |
