last nite i got blown out of the sky in my ferox wit only 50 percent insurance on it (that was all i could afford)by 2 battleships gate camping in a 0.4. i no this is a unsecure spot but stil why would they do that. no ransom no threats just blowing people up. and then they podded me but thats not that big of a deal i didnt have important implants or anything. but the point of this is why gatecamp. why just blow other ppl up for no reason and have a sec lvl of -7.6 in like 15 mins. i dont see the point.

Loot. Not everyone may have good loot, but it's not like their going to scan ships and leave those with T1 stuff alone
Edit: Not smart to buy ships that you cant fully insure and replace if you lose it.

Yeah, thats the right attitude to this game actually. You will encounter some tactics you dont really like or understand the fun of, but everybody plays the game their way.
Some low sec is pretty dangerous, specially near mission areas. Get instant bookmarks if you are in a slow ship like the ferox. I tanked 2 of those gate snipers in my rupture, at least for the 10 seconds it took to MWD to the gate.

the sad answer is because they can
some ppl aparently like sitting by a gate shooting at everything that moves knowing that they are completely safe and cant get killed (because they are aligned and ready to warp out should anyone get to close)
IMO gate campers are the lowest of low in eve but they are unfortunatlly part of life in eve as for why they do it its anyone's guess

The most commonly camped gates are the ones closest to high sec, and of them the most commonly camped are the ones that happen to be a route.
The way eve is designed is based on chokepoints, if you wish to travel more than 3 jumps you will be hard pressed to find alternate routes that are reasonably close in number of jumps and thus high traffic gates are created.
Camping a gate is deathly dull and for that reason you want to camp a high traffic gate with no concorde response and that is usually a 0.4 system right outside on high sec space.
As for why you gate camp... there is a multitude of reasons for it but in reality it boils down to three possibilities.
#1: Isk. plenty of players make their isk from camping gates. #2: Fun. Plenty of people consider it to be alot of fun to blow up another player. #3: EGO. Plenty of people have low selfasteem and get back the whoever they feel they have to get back at by blowing off steam in EvE.
Now usually its a combination of two or three that is the real reason but any excuse you put before me I bet I can boil down to thise three.
Ganking newbies for example will usually be #3 possibly with a smidge of #2. Killing haulers is easilly #1 but in all probability some #2 aswell.
I can go on but I doubt there is any need.
Personally I dont have much problem with camps, most empire camps can be avoided or waited out however I think its sad that there is in reality not all that much you can do about them.

Edited by: Cadela Fria on 21/06/2006 17:35:00 1. There is no "legitimate" reason for this, cause you don't need one 2. People do it cause they can 3. People also do it cause they think it's fun. Are you trying to tell me you're doing things in EVE BECAUSE they're boring, annoying or tedious?. I understand some things have to be done now and then thats not fun..but you don't do it because it's not fun. 4. Loot 5. People also do it to **** other people off..again, part of the whole fun aspect. I for one, back when I was pirating, loved it when people got upset about me killing them. If I was still pirating..well, same thing. 6. Because it's a game, no moral implications to worry about! (great stuff) 7. Did I say, because they can? 8. Oh yeah, and because they can.

Actually, the map is not always acurate. A few hours before downtime (realy early morning for me), I was trying to get from 0.0 into empire though 7q. the map showed 1 person in system in the past 30 minutes, no ship kills in the past hour, no pod kills in the past hour.
I jumped into 7q and noticed 8 other people. Said - "what the heck" and warped to my BM for the other gate and got stuck in a bubble. Lost my shuttle and then my pod. Opps. Knew I should have logged and tried later. My mistake.
However, people coming the other way would have no way of knowing other than by using a scout.
Why where they there? Why else - to give me a fun heart thumping couple of seconds as I hoped to reach the gate in at least my pod Man they locked me fast!
Anyway - fly safe

Reason why i camp gates is because i ran out of money and im so bored of npcing and missions , if i blow up ppl i get interaction , and i sometimes get cool fights , occasional ganksqauds i get to , so basicly you cant complain outlaws get ganked to . Basicly outlaws are sitting ducks , especially when they gategank (meaning they tank sentries) . Outlaws like the risk i guess , and i basicly do it for isk , interaction , thrills , and i get pvp whole time im on .

In empire, interdictors are not allowed, and interceptors get owned by sentries. So unless you have a fairly large group of players who are collectively tanking sentries and warp scrambling, there really is no option to ransom at a gate in empire.
So you shouldn't blame the pirate that killed you, you should blame the sentries that make it difficult to ransom.

thats funny, i seem to remember one of my favorite fights came from being agressed at a gate.
me and my corp mate were sniping, and a vagabond started hanging around the gate, making instas to our sniping spots.
so we knew what he was doing, so we fitted for close combat.
I warped in on the obvious one and acted like i couldnt warp out when he approached...
a pilgrim uncloaks and the vaga and pilgrim started attacking me, but unfortunately for them i was in a close combat uber tank setup, then the domi warped in

Well to be honest, those are not pirates.. they are gankers and they do it for the killboard, any other reasons they give is crap.
Pirates hunt you down, and usually ransom you (not always).
Have been living in low sec for quite some time and to be honest, get yourself bookmarks around to where you want to travel to, know wich gates that are frequently camped or systems pirates rage in... If you have bookmarks they usually can't gatecamp you (2 battleships atleast) and gank your battlecruiser...
Also remember, a safespot is not safe in low sec.. many pirates know well how to bust your safespot as well as deadspace missionpockets.

Well I pirate Belt hunt (ransom), Gate tank and snipe. Why do we do it because after a boring life in 0.0 killing random people makes me a happy and TBH is the only thing that keeps me playing this game. To pay for my crystals i have to destroy everything i can.
Take for an example the Rookie in a shuttle with a 45 mill implant in the hold! Hence the kill all scenario.
And its not safe at all even sniping the Merc Coalition have recently removed some of our ships (with some good tactics/ Dampening and rapid killing recon ships etc) which i respect.
Use instas and dont whine when your slow ass ferox/ etc gets roasted on the way to the gate.

Personally as a pirate i think im doing the world of eve a great favour by randomly blowing people up. This is because of a few reasons, but the main 1- Economics
This is because if Pirates didnt blow ppl up then no one would need to buy a new ship, and then the person/corp who builds ships wouldnt get any cash, and the person/corp who mines the minerals wouldnt get any cash for the job they do!
Its the circle of life! Without pirate, ship prices would be stupidly low, as no one would need a new 1 :P
Well thats one reason i pirate, the other is... well... simplely... because i can!

I believe these "gatecampers" are performing an extremely important function in eve. It's not really anything to do with economics imo, there probably isn't enough of it around to have that effect.
The fundamental function they perform is they create a tangeable difference between empire and low sec. If they did not exist, then the difference between the two would be negligeable and no one would even care what space they flew in.
I think this split is important to eve mechanics. You have three tiers of space from relatively secure, through pretty insecure to complete free-for-all. A good balance I'd say.

The main reason for me, to gate camp, is indeed making some ISK. There is no better way of income, if you decided to walk the pure piracy path, no NPCing, no missions as income. And besides the good loot (the best loot usually gets destroyed, me remembers a freighter skill book in a condor ...), there are a lot of other funny things, you can experience:
- Funny chats and mails, like the one, who was ****ed of, because i shot him on an AFK travel and his three corp mates asking me, to kill him again because of the nice show he made in his corps chat ... - Sometimes the people, that have the balls to stand up and try to fight, so it is a pleasure of thinking about traps, decoys, counter traps... - Oh, and yes, the sound of a popping pod is awesome...

One of these days CCP are going to stealth boost senties to the point where a Dread can't tank them for more than a few seconds, and where they outrange Any sniper in the game. The gate campers will cry louder than anyone that's ever been ganked. CCP will laugh heartily, and a week later change it back.
Once the gankers realize that it's safe again and go back to their dastardly ways, CCP will reintroduce the changes. This will go on for ever. They will do this 1)Because they can. 2)Because it's fun. 3)Return to 1).

Checking his info I saw he had a paltry 15 mil bounty on his head. I sent him a mail letting him know how low that bounty was and how lame he must be. His response was "F---you!" hehe, revenge is sweet!

Alliances do it to cover entrances to their territory, pirates do it because the targets cant fight back usually. Pirates run when they hit a target that can, Alliances usually have a dozen or more covering the gate, their target dies. When I camp, I fit in the alliance side of things, never the pirate. If only ISS could secure their own damned space I wouldnt have to worry bout even camping as the alliance as much. Its kinda boring, you get your typical pirates who send in their alts, you blow them up, pirate never comes, 5 hours later you go home and the next shift takes over... Id rather rat or mine really as thats atleast more entertaining most the time

Do you mean epen or epencephalon. The segment of the brain next behind the midbrain, including the cerebellum and pons; the hindbrain. Sometimes abbreviated to epen.

I'll tell you what confuses me about these threads. Who doesn't like blowing things up? if the ppl complaining/confused about being destroyed really don't understand then just look at other games you have played. PPl enjoy to blow **** up, it's a fact.
Who here hasn't played GTA or something similar and taken great pleasure from mowing down innocent civilians on the streets. was this profitable in any way, not really, was it great sport and a challenge, no, but it was really funny
So why just because the thing ur blowing up has a real person controlling it, is it any different in eve. It's fun to watch things explode and know that u caused it.
Now call it retarded, call it a deficiency of something in real life if you want, but i can't help thinking that if some ppl actually went out and tried commiting random acts of violence and destruction then everyone would enjoy it.
At the end of the day it's boys and their toys, explosions, guns, fighting etc. and it's all great fun.

yes eve is only a game but surly the fact that people spend alot of time in the game means that to many it is more than just a game becaue of the time & real life money spent
there are those who can make real money form selling their millions of isk (rules??) for real money
so some would argu that this is just a game but imo they are very narrow minded

Your point is completely retarded. You basically saying that for ppl that sell isk on ebay we are messing with their real life. well... good. i feel quite satisfied that i'm screwing up ppl that break the rules of eve and destroy the game for the rest of us by making money of a game that they shouldn't do. but this is just a game, whatever way u look at it. the game is designed so ppl going into low sec are afraid constantly of getting blown up. that's what the game designers want and if u don't like it then don't play the game. narrow minded no, true yes

Sum it up:
There are several locations pirates can hunt:
- 0.0 gates - low sec gates - 0.0 belts - low sec belts - 0.0 stations - low sec stations - complexes
Now lest go into details:
0.0 gates: Camp an 0.0 gate is possible, but traffic is low. Zyrine and Megacyte transports are done with carriers since last patch. Large alliance blobs will intercept pirates. Haulers and freigthers are well escorted.
Threat level: high Possible ISK: low
0.4 gates: Camp a low sec gate can be done with snipers or sentry tankers. Since sentry guns really hurt, sniping is the best option if you are alone. As team a mix of sentry tankers and snipers works smooth. Carebears bring everything to you an dont even try to warp away or fly in a 90 degree angle to your gunships. Bascially they act like lemmings and bring a lot of ISK. Piratehunters bring additional ISK when you kill them.
Threat level: medium Possible ISK: high
0.0 belts: "Empty" is the best word. While Eve has thousands of belts, only few will contain a target. Once you enter local people instantly warp to safespot or log. Alliances will send out blob to kill you.
Threat level: medium Possible ISK: low
0.4 belts:
Empty - more targets than in 0.0, though. Once you found someone you might loot 2-3 miner IIs. Not to be compared to a low sec camp where carebears bring the whole corphangar to you.
Threat level: low Possible ISK: low
Complexes: 0.0 complexes are usually "camped" by alliances and they will sent all they have to keep pirates out. So if you show up with 2 ships you will 50 interceptors on your a$$. Low sec complexes are not very interesting. Like low sec belts you might loot some n00b stuff, but nothing really exiting.
Threat level: High Possible ISK: low
If you check the list, you will find out why camping a low sec gate is the most efficient way to pirate. You also will find out why it is good to use snipers, if possible combined with sentry tankers. The ISK are on the gates! Nobody brings a corphangar full of BPOs to a belt or complex. But everything that can be built, transported, refined or sold will be found on a low sec gate.
Pirates want ISK!

i disagree with a lot of the things u just said lifewire. complexes isk potential is extremely high as most ppl take faction bs or faction fitted bs into them. i've made a small fortune from killing complexers. secondly 0.0 is high threat lvl but also very high earning potential if ur good. risk v reward is quite balanced in eve atm. pvp'ers often use good equipment and carriers are still only owned by a very small percentage of eve and haulers are still used a lot with high end mins and equipment in. 0.0 belts i would say very few ppl log or instantly warp to ss as eve is full of plebs who stay there for ages after u enter local. the rest of what u said i fully agree with tho

Carriers have no turrets or bays, so if it was a in carrier it would have been fighters or drones. A dreadnought could have hit you with Citadel Torpedoes.. but against a vexor O_o.

Edited by: General Coochie on 05/10/2006 11:51:57 You say low-sec is a empty. Well then theres nothing stopping newer players for ratting there :) I myself ratted quite a bit in low-sec my first weeks in game, all you need is a fairly empty system. And since you can rat there in frigs and cruisers rewards are pretty nice considering the risks. Even if you do loose you frig it doesnt really matter. Low security isnt dangeorus if you know what you are doing. The most dangerous with low sec is gates (camps) . If you check map you hardly run into them. And with instas you can avoid some ppl trying to make some isk at gates and those occational ganks as someone talked about two posts upp.
Ppl getting popped in belts in low sec areas are noobs not checking local and scanner. Or it is ppl that actually want to fight. Thats also the main reason why belt piracy in low-sec isnt very rewarding if you finally find someone not warping away they are mining in a vexor or smth and drop 4 mining lasers \o/

This might be what you experienced. You CAN loot some nice stuff in complexes, i agree - but you WILL loot whole corphangars at gate. My big hits have all been at gates - i talk of billions of ISK and not 1-2 good named items. Did you ever loot 5 bil ISK in a complex??? No? I did at a gate.

Well that's fair enough i guess. I was just disagreeing with the 'low isk potential' implication for complexers which when u've killed 2 faction bs faction fitted and several other ships including a navy raven with 1.5bil in module i'd say they're not low gain. But ur right gate pirating is the most profitable pirating by far, but also the most boring

It used to be, yes. But we experience more and more that piratehunters attack us daily. This way we get ISK and fun. On some days we get attacked very often. It¦s a nice cat and mouse game we play with them and i really start to like it.
But yes, 1 year ago a low sec camp was boring, omg. You were lucky when you got attacked once per month.

Well this all adds the explanations here. so gate camping is not only profitable in certain areas but can also stir up trouble which is what we like

Edited by: MrMann on 05/10/2006 20:33:03 I try to remain poliet and give honest answers to those my Corp kills when they have questions such as this.
Just saying shaddup noob is both rude and not good for the game as a whole IMHO.
So in that vein:
There are several reasons my Corp or any other PvP Corp kills and pods.
1) Politics. Currently my Corp is attempting to close certain areas of Lonetrek to ALL traffic other than those set to "blue" by the Alliance we are working with. This means we kill and pod everyone not set to blue. No ransoming. No talking. No negotiating. It's low sec, obviously, and thus an area that can be claimed to an extent by various groups.
2) Money. We kill to see what ya got. Yes, haulers usually have the best loot but I have found absolute treasures in shuttles. You would not believe what some people will haul in a shuttle. BPOs for example. Remember, at a gate camps we don't have time to talk, scan, or think about it. Otherwise you'll either jump or warp away. We shoot first, then see what ya got.
3) Ransom? Pain in the butt. We don't do it. It's just too dicey with current game mechanics. Also, since we are at a gate we cannot hang around and talk as that usually ends up getting us killed. Ransoming in a belt however is different.
4) Why pod? One, we have been asked to. Two, it gets you out of system so you can't warn everyone in local where we are. Three, soon we will be able to loot your corpse for implants (I think) if so . . . well more podding to be expected.
5) We can't be killed so it is not fair? This is incorrect. Pirates get killed often. I've been killed often. It happens. Usually by my making a mistake against a foe that has his act together. I've been killed sniping. I've been killed at close range camping. I've been killed period. LOL. Bottom line is when we add up our profits and losses we are still ahead.
What can you do?
1) USE THE (*#&*)#&(^#&*^#&*)^ MAP!!! If you see an area that has several kills and pod kills in the last hour that should tell you something.
2) USE A )*(#)&*#^&*# scout!! Yes, I know this doesn't work for the solo player.
3) Warp Core stabs and Nano fibers are your friend.
4) INSTAS!!! Use em.
5) Don't be a target. Are you really flying in low sec in a hauler, alone, without instas?? You so deserve to die.
6) Don't carry what you cannot afford to lose in low sec. If absolutely necessary . . . Fly in a gang, use the map, use instas, kit your ship for survival, etc. etc.
7) DON'T SMACK TALK THE PIRATES!!! Well at least until you are OUT of the system. Otherwise you will be hunted down and killed with glee.
8) If trapped in a system . . . don't sit in one Safe Spot. You;ll get probed out and killed. Also, talk to the pirates. See if you can work out a deal for you to leave the system alive.
These are just some short thoughts I jotted down quickly. There is obviously more. The bottom line however is that in low sec and 0.0 you are always a target to someone. Plan accordingly.
