Edited by: Akira Serenity on 26/06/2006 20:05:34 Edited by: Akira Serenity on 26/06/2006 20:05:06 What I am wanting to know is why do we put up with this constant lag in systems with more than 30 people in. We heard about the new servers.... supposed to improve the performance and yet still issues occur.
Now I expect people saying well what do you expect... 450 people in jita.. you will get lag. Err no... you pay for this game so I expect the system to cope with large numbers in single systems. Enough of excuses from ccp and players defending them because you are either easily pleased or brainwashed. It is about time we had a setup which could support what ccp promiss the game should be like. I look at the eve videos that come out and wish I could play that game because it is no way what we get on tranquilaty.
Chinese servers are up, woot... could not care a bit... how does that affect my gameplay? Originally was supposed to be all on one server. Now the one server cannot support 100% play another will be setup with duplicate shortfalls.
Additionaly, where are the changes and improvements to the game. New ideas, ships are few and far between. Promissed changes since beta are still not here and will be put off again and again and again just so more subscriptions can be collected. Even if there were issues with the next major patch, what were reasons to hold back tier 3 bs and the new bcs. Instead we await a sept/dec/april deployment.
If this game hopes to compete with it's competitors with new ones on the horizon. A lot more will have to be done.
I expect the usual blind sighted remarks to come back saying I am expecting too much... they do their best... stop complaining. Well maybe it is time to sit back and look at what you really get for your money! With a logical, mature look at what is being offered.

Have you looked at your own PC and more importantly your own connection? I rarely experience lag anymore and I'm playing from halfway across the world from the servers.

Tried both, at peak times. Absolutely nothing wrong here, and my PC is now a couple of years old.

The lag is a big issue for me too. I have a great PC with a broadband connection.
I see videos of fleet battles with lag pauses, I hear players battling in a system actually causing lag to give them an edge and I see the game grind along during large enemy missions. As a new player I wonder if there will even be an end game for me with the lag during the big fights I dream of being part of.

Pop over to Venilen.
It has warp lag of over twenty seconds for a small mission instantiation, at the moment. Module lag around five to ten seconds.
(which is actually very unusual, and I'm half expecting the server to fall over at any moment )

I always have a delay (lag) problem, around 5-10 seconds, mainly because I'm on dial up and in the US. It sucks, but you kinda get used to it after a while...

Something I just did the other day, which I had totally forgotten about since I got my new computer, was adjusting the "Default TCP Receive Window" size.
Check out www.speedguide.net and snoop around the 'Broadband tools' area. There is an analyzer and a tool to adjust these settings. As with anything that changes windows settings, read stuff carefully.
Changing my 'Receive Window' to 256960 seems to have at least a minor difference with Eve, and a significant difference with stuff like torrent downloads.

I think the point everyone is trying to make here, is actually the fact that although CCP doesnt deliver everythign they promise.... they go a hell of alot further than any other company. I dont care what the poster says, server have improved, before 40 people fights lagged now your safe up to around 100. Plus hardly anyone CTD's.
As for the statement about no changes to content, look at planetside or SWG any changes there not only costed an expansion pack that would give unfair advantages but were also very slow and often buggy. I realise CCP dont focus on this game because they are nice guys, but its simply there only success as a company atm, and it would be wrong to say that their like EA games or any other company that dont deliver.

I got through Jita once and it was only about 45 seconds to load the system.

hello all,
i¦m pretty new in eve, just one month now. i¦m sitting in germany with a DSL connection. my system is one of most powerfull recently available (x2-4600 with 7800 gtx) and when i started playing everything was fine. absolutely no lag, also in jita. perfect playing! no delay also in fights with 20 npc¦s....
but now i¦m facing extreme lag problems. sometimes it takes 10 seconds and more to activate a module! this is extremely dangerous in missions, because the npc¦s does not lag. and if my shields should recharge, nothing happens due to the lag.....
the lag is also present in stations. it takes 10-20 seconds to transfer loot into the hangar, etc.....this sucks and if these problems are not solved soon, i will not extend my account.....i¦m definately not ready for paying 15Ç for this lag....and my connection is fine...battlefield and any other game is gunning perfectly.....
btw: these problems are in EVERY system....also if only 5 players are in!

Hmm often lag is caused by really bad peering of your isp to the eve hoster. Or a paket loss somewhere on your route to the eve hub. Or a dieing setup of your OS.
Never had lag so far. Sometimes in Motsu when too much missions are running.

You have to blame the agent system for this. People are sticking around the newbie systems to run agent missions, and also Jita have to be travelled through for people just passing by. It doesnt exacly help that Jita is a trade hub too.

first LAG=Low Action Game
1. Frame rate lag. if u get alot of ppl on the area your computer tries to load them all in at once and the HD makes some noise. Depending on how good a computer you have or not this may slow you down. Solution: Turn down the graphics stuff in the game If you experience link death problems from this - upgrade your network card drivers Avoid large groups of players Upgrade your computer - not always the cheapest of options but if you're looking for a quick fix make sure you've got at least half a gig of ram 2. Server lag This sometimes happens when the server is very busy like have alot of ppl on same sistem all go fine but if u type something get several seconds to show up etc Solution: Don't take 500 people to a tea party New patches improve server stability New hardware makes it harder for the server to crash/able to cope with more people in the one place. None of these are simple solutions unfortunately 3. Connection lag Causes: This is what happens when something on the lines between you and the servers breaks down. e.g. ISP has problems, flakey router Things are unresponsive . You can look around with no problems, press buttons etc. but it takes a long time for any messages to get through. Solution: Run traceroutes/pingplotter to find out where the problem is - might be your ISP is sucking if is CCP fault send the traceroute use a tool like http://www.pingplotter.com/ and the TQ ip: 87.237.38.200

Edited by: J nx on 27/06/2006 13:07:18 Its probably your CPU stressing out on something... Check for additional programs running in the background especially when you dont have a high end system.
Im in Rens pretty often to pick some stuff and i never have any lag.
Specs: AMD XP 2400+ 1GB DDR Asus V9999 (6800 nvidia series card)
Things like msn and other crap take much resources sometime so clean up and try again. Mozilla FireFox can take a lot of CPU when you visit Flash and Shockwave sites or viewing pages with animated gifs. I notices that full java based applets also take lots of resources (e.g. Azureus). Bandwith needs on EvE are minimal.
Servers are fine imo.

Ironforge was laggy to a friend of mine... then I upgraded her system memory and geuss what? No more "lag".
I sometimes run missions from a Duvolle agent in Ours... a heavily populated system and I don't experience latency issues.
How much memory do you have? What graphics card? All in all, I think you'll find the issue is down to your PC or your connection.

No lag unless the fight involves 100+ people at a time. Lag only becomes really problematic around 150-200 people in the fight. _____

Do this:
1. Clean out Cache folder (see post in newbie forum). 2. Empty Windows trash can. 3. Defrag harddrive.
See if that makes things better?

Sydney, Australia on 512kb ADSL. Rens, Jita and battles are no problem since the server upgrade.
I'd suggest the OP check ports, firewall, bandwidth, CPU / RAM (paging errors?) and other local factors. Or move to one of the 48,000 systems that are not Rens / Jita until they get a decent system.

Test machine: Two clients running, 3000+Ghz Athlon, 1GB RAM, ATi X800 grafic card
Test A: 512er DSL. 250ms latency. No lag in Rens. (My normal connection) Test B: 56k Modem. No lag in Rens. 180ms latency from Germany. (My fallback connection)
On sunday afternioons/evenings I occasionally get some lag, but that doesn't come from the server farm most of the time but from the internet because everyone is downloading games, music or pictures or playing, talking, chatting, ...
Try to find out if you're on a shared line. That would mean a couple of customerts use the same infrastructure with a given bandwidth max that is lower than the single bandwidths advertised (not sold!) to you adde dup. A 56k Modem can't phyically transport more, but on a bad connection it will drop down to lower rates.
Check if you're using a lot of swapspace. Defragmenting the harddrive after cleaning out the /EVE/cache folder is a good way to get EVE up to speed too after a while. Check www.evegathering.com for more info on how and what to clear.
Btw the devs stated that the system nodes run into massive problems when about 600 pilots are in a system. That doesn't happen often these days. And they tried to raise that limit for the China cluster, so that number might be outdated. (No amount of cash can counter technical limitations, only reduce some effects as we have seen with the RAMSAN's effect on the market speed.) --*=*=*--

I was in a fleet battle just now, and it was laggy as hell at first, killed the sound - perfect.
I play from Sydney, Australia on 512k ADSL. I've had no other lag problems in the game other then that one just then (which hopefully CCP will fix coz I really like sound in battle, good for listening to Vent though).

Tested on computers ranging in age and performance including a brand new games computer, dual processor and a lot of ram. Still bad.

I have a two year old PC, and the only 'lag' I get is when my computer starts to chug when I'm getting my ass handed to me by 30 or so pirates. Oh, and when I jump into a gatecamp. 40 people with drones makes my PC hiccup, but I don't have network lag; I hit the gate and warp out in a second or so ;)
Also, I saw a post about RWIN, the receive window. Without going into network details (since I'd rather not without my reference book), be careful with that setting, since it's used for TCP congestion control. Too small makes things bad; too big makes them worse =P ---------------------------- The opinions expressed by Nico do not reflect his corporation. He's just an ass.

With the not so recent changes, the node power is distributed every now and then on basis of systems and their "popularity". (in crude terms)
This means that on occasions there would be systems with so few allocated resources that even a small engagement will turn into a lagfest for a few if not all ppl present.
Until they get dynamic load balancing in, Eve won't be what I'd wish it to be.
And honestly, get over the "get a better PC/connection" suggestion. Most examples point towards the other direction.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game. But so many times I wish it would be more playable in the "epic" situations I wanted to play in. And no, 10second module activation lag and the silly client freezes (in a good 50vs50 battle scenario) isn't what I'd call acceptable.

I didn't use to get lag back when I was running missions in Oursulaert in my first couple of weeks. These days the lag is random - it can happen anywhere, even in low-population systems, while a high-population system might be fine. So it's really random, and certainly not due to my computer or connection. And when I experience lag, others in the area do too, while I might not have lag when some others might (in which case it's probably computer/connection related).

Eve and Wow both 1 Gig of RAM!!! This can be considered the bare minimum!!!!

Look at your own PC i have not experienced lag and i run three accounts off the same computer. The entire eve game is not lagged, 100% fact my own experience and many others bears this out.
There may be localised lag, a server that needs a restart or your node is also running a system with a huge fleet battle - unlucky.
If you always have lag it probably isn't eve as they balance nodes at DT - but you can try moving to another region for a day or two (call it a road trip - vitis the eve gate and the monolith) to see how your experience varies.
If you lag everywhere everyhow it isn't eve - it's your PC, your installation, your modem / router or your isp. Something specific to you anyway.
If you can get to that point you can either: a) Prove the areas your normally fly are perma-lagged and petition it, maybe they can re-balance the nodes to help b) ask for advice on your connection / pc / installation.
Anything else is just whining without any facts to back you up.

I agree entirely... my friend was running WOW on half a gig and always complained about how laggy IF was. I upgraded to a gig and geuss what? No more lag.
I used to play SWG and experienced bad slow downs (not latency issues) around Coronet. I upgraded to 1GB of memory and it solved my problems.

I'm not a CCP employee so I don't know all the factors involved, but I think I can come up with a simplified and plausible example:
Let's say you have 400 people flying around Jita. Those 400 people control their own ship, the server node Jita is on simply monitors their actions and location and relays them to other people present in Jita. The server doesn't actually control the ships, so it doesn't waste compute power on those things. For the sake of argument I am also going to assume that there are little to no mission running activities in Jita.
Why is that relevant?
Let's say you have 100 people in your mission system, and just 50 of them are running missions. Each of them has 10 NPC opponents on average at any given time. So does this mean the server only has to keep track of the activities and location of 100 ships? (4 times less than in jita).
No, probably a lot more than that. The server also also control the NPC's the people are fighting. This means 50 people x 10 NPC opponents is approx. 500 additional ships!
By this logic over 600 ships are active in the system, and 500 of them have to be actively controlled by the server node (which I assume costs a lot more computing power than just monitoring a player ship). And then we are not even considering the computing power needed to maintain the mission areas, loot drops & cans, etc etc.
Of course this sure since I don't work for CCP, so I can't be sure, I don't know the metrics and factors involved, but it's an educated guess and I believe also a reasonable assumption.
So in essence, the issue is probably that a person running a mission in a system consumes many times the computing resources compared to a person who is simply flying through, trading or even mining in Jita... Rimhawk V8 Interceptors |

Add to that all the static objects that get spawned in deadspaces and you're probably spot on.
I swear one of the problems is everyone tells newbs they HAVE to do missions for the Caldari Navy, because they can't be bothered to explain the whole story. There's probably more folk running missions for Caldari Navy than all the other Caldari corps put together.

Then on a good day only client lag due to all the stuff in space like 100 ships, drones&fighter, pos structures, whatever. On a bad day server lag like modules activation delayed by 20 seconds or more etc. Then you are also doomed in any solar system that's on the same node of the cluster.
But if I compare it to the status of the cluster before the hardware upgrades, it has improved a lot. Lag appears less often.

Here is what I just did to fix the lag... I cancelled my subscription. I have lost two Ravens in the last two weeks fully decked out with tech II stuff. It took me a long time to build up to them and I get blown up first in a LVL 3 mission and then two weeks later in a LVL 4 mission because I am not able to do anything. Once I finally warp in, I am already blown up. This program sucks. So the best way to solve the lag is to quit. I will take my $20 a month US, and play a different game. Taurus 6345 signing out... for good!

Originally by: Spacebuster hello all,
i¦m pretty new in eve, just one month now. i¦m sitting in germany with a DSL connection. my system is one of most powerfull recently available (x2-4600 with 7800 gtx) and when i started playing everything was fine. absolutely no lag, also in jita. perfect playing! no delay also in fights with 20 npc¦s....
but now i¦m facing extreme lag problems. sometimes it takes 10 seconds and more to activate a module! this is extremely dangerous in missions, because the npc¦s does not lag. and if my shields should recharge, nothing happens due to the lag.....
the lag is also present in stations. it takes 10-20 seconds to transfer loot into the hangar, etc.....this sucks and if these problems are not solved soon, i will not extend my account.....i¦m definately not ready for paying 15Ç for this lag....and my connection is fine...battlefield and any other game is gunning perfectly.....
btw: these problems are in EVERY system....also if only 5 players are in!
regards...
Not forme theres not, sometimes a wee bit of lag doing mass transfers or auto stacking in hanger...but comabt wise? Maybe a couple of seconds on warp in on auto agro missions... ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

Yeah, i think it's my comp that can NOT handle moving 20 items from my cargo bay to the hangar. I think the cpu temp increases as well when i open a can in midspace. Must be exceptionally hard for my slow comp to copy a 40x40x32 bits....
And to all the other people in here complaining about mod's activating 5 or more seconds after clicking the on switch: It is your computer!
Look at the bright side: when the wind comes from the east, sun shines, it's a leapyear and a plane flies over, we have absolutely no problems (lag) whatsoever !
ccp: Fix the client side lag. Thank you. And do it before it gets worse (read before you have another 10 k of customers come over)
/me a bit fed up with the "turn down your graphics and switch isp" bs.

I Briefly played wow and would get like 30 fps in the wild with graphics in mid/low and .5 fps in ironforge. no joke. ---------------------------

No lag whatsoever unless in a big fleetfight and then it's an expected thing which can't be remedied really so that's all ok.

Originally by: Akira Serenity Those who say they are having no problems, come over to jita now, multiple people complaining in local. Have tested game from three locations on three different ISP and lag always present. Tested on computers ranging in age and performance including a brand new games computer, dual processor and a lot of ram. Still bad.
I did exactly that at the request (sort of) of several people. I flew around the system and visited every station. The only lag I encountered was a slight stuttering as I approached a busy gate (over a dozen ships around it) to leave. All through my visit I was hearing reports from people saying it was bad.

Yes there is Lag, yes the lag issue has improved from the server hardware updates. Yes there are some tweeks you can do to help the lag issue. Closing your overview when jumping into fleet battles. Closing unused chat windows. Creating folders and placing BMs in then to not lag your P&P. Turning off your audio (man I have been play silent eve for 2.5 years, forget what it even sounds like ). Striping every addition piece of software of your computer so it only runs eve. Defrag your HD once a week. And a whole bunch of other things.
So it comes down to this you have to put a bit of work in to play eve and you only do this because the eve MMOG space concept is unique, which means if you want to play a space MMOG you have no other choice at all. Until CCP has direct competition in the space MMOG category we will only get zero cost solutions from CCP (oh SWG doesn't count).
Oh by the way, wasn't the Hardware upgrade only geared for growth to 25000 concurrent online users. Look up that Texas Instruments or howsever it was case study for Eve-online.

Well, I agree with this post. Making a search for LAG in EVE, you will got a lot of complaints about this problem. I have experiency myself sometime these lags, my friends have experiency also, in local channel some other players experiency these lags too, and I don't believe than all these players have a bad connection or computer problem.
Like Akira said, many player saying I don't have lag, update your drivers, change memory size, new graphic card.... bla bla bla..., but many reasons let me thing about this problem not come from all these players complaining about LAG :
Outside game ' CCP will add new or change hardwares' On connection ' Maximum player reached, you are # 14 in queue ' On playing ' Waiting for a jump ' On playing ' Emergency shot down in 10 min ' etc...
After 9 months playing EVE, what I would like? FIRST, is to hear from CCP is these LAG is a VERY important problem to fixe and how they will manage to resolve this issue. SECOND, all my friends come back to EVE.
