I don't realy know hat your problem is:
You can fly straight down and straight up with any of the methods allready described. The only thing is, that your ship wil roll to try to remain upright, without any consequence to the direction you are flying to. That's just a small convenience for you as the watcher. Keeps your food inside ;)
There are many systems with gates far above or below the plane of it's planets. Mission locations are often completely off that plane too. So, EVE is as 3D as it can get.
The reason why most (and definetly not all) objects are within one plane has allready been explained. It is the same as mith most RL planetary systems and galaxies. Yes, our RL galaxy is at least some lightyears thick, but so is EVE's galaxy.
So, EVE is completely realistic in it's 3D representation of objects in space. |

Congratulations, you are now flying down. It's surprisingly easy to fly upwards too using a modification of the above method.
But you cant fly down in 90 degree from the planet orbit plane, like straight down or up, as Alzion said in post 15.
Always also been a bit miffed that you cant move the camera freely, horizontally its no problem but vertically its limited to like 85-87 degree from the radial plane also.

Edited by: TheBlightedOne on 28/06/2006 15:00:14 The reason that you can't fly directly down in EVE (i.e. literally down the -ve y axis, assuming normal convetion), is that EVE camera system is essentially no more complex than quake or any 3rd person game which relies on longitude and latitude to determine camera orientation. Of course latitude values giving exact up and down directions results in a singularity, you lose longitude information (e.g. standing at the north pole, every direction you walk toward is south). Hence none of these games lets you do this.
Rarely, games lets you have full control of orientation of characters (using rotation matrix or quaternions), but they tend to be quite confusing and difficult to get use to.
