Why the hell not? Are they in some special category now?

Its always been this way, mainly because the number of items on a killmail and put into a can could crash the server.
Imagine if someone stuffed a Charon full of 4000 shuttles and it died.

Exactly.
And, the amount of stuff they can hold greaty surpasses the amount of stuff a cargo can can hold. --- --- --- ---

They are in the cargo capacity > jet can size special category.

Ever killed an NPC spawn with 100 million trit? Obviously that isn't the problem

How about giving them a 75% destroyed percentage? What you're arguing is like saying: "Yeah, imagine if a shuttle with over a million bookmarks dropped a can, the lag would be massive".

Doing that is actually an exploit.

Ever kill an npc spawn which contained a single item larger than a jet-can?
Silly boy.

There was a problem the devs found about two months ago, or reported they'd found. Strange that the fix didn't made it into the last couple of patches.
Killmails only have a limited size and are cut short, so that's not the problem. Suddenly appearing cans should not be a problem neither. There are general freight containers all over in the mission runner hangars. *eg*. --*=*=*--

What single item is larger than a jetcan?
The only "item" I know that is larger is a ship, and ships get ejected and launched into space when a ship carrying them is blown up.

It's a design flaw according to the Vegas devchat, the freighter chan't drop/pickup cans in space so when it dies it simply can't drop a can as it's not allowed to jetison in space.

I think it's time they fix that bug then.

so there's no point targeting a freighter then, because you cannot ever get anything from it right? (unless you simply want to destroy it and its contents)

People quite often ransom them.
Corporations that would normally never ransom will often suspend such a rule to get 500m or so for a freighter.

Not that I heard this confirmed officially, but I thought one of the several reasons that freighters were left out of the jet can business (dropping / picking up / etc) was due to the fact that picking up a jet can would be tantamount to favouring macro miners.
Though, as they are probably able to use high capacity haulers, instas, etc, I don't see how this discourages macroing...

hey hey,
AFAIK a Freighter is the only ship class that has 1 specific usage; Station - Station haulling. not sure if i would consider outpost deployment an actual role and POS deployment can be done with other ships so that doesnt really count imho.
They are Uber station - station haullers, thats pretty much it. Once u undock the cargo hold is locked. I have no idea why they cant be used for other things or even have slots. Ive posted about them before and was flamed so i guess peeps think this is fine personally i think its not, and YES my Chunk would be used to help in mining ops for ultra haulling and belt npc protection. but tbh with all their foibles Chunk makes me smile everytime she undocks. :)

Yup, I'm kinda supprised they haven't fixed it yet either, since they sounded pretty suprised when they heard about it. Although they were all pretty smashed at the time too.

it is not a bug as I see it. The only way something could be left over from a freighter is if the freighter was not using freight container and "named" item was just in the cargo hold. If they made it so all itmes would not be distroyed when the ship was distroyed you would have fright containers all over space see as they are large than a jet can they could not fit. This would cause many more issues than simply have stuff be ditroyed. besides having stuff be distroyed in a freighter is that much need isk sink people always talking about.:)

Surely the kill mail would state
destroyed items Minmatar Shuttle (Quantity 4000)
or does the few k ammo on killmails crash the server too :)

The devs may have just said screw it to fixing Freighter drops, seeing as they are moveing from a can dropping system to a salvage system.
Maybe the "Fix" will come with Salvage.
For me, that's a double edged sword, as I'll probobly be able to fly a frieghter(and afford one) about that time.

You'd be surprised what you can get for a freighter that's moving a corps goods and is full of minerals, ships, skills, modules, implants, etc. 1Bil ship, several bil in goods... 500m is probably only the tip of the iceburg. --- --- --- ---

Actually, they said in the one of the dev fests that it's a bug...
They said it was a consequence of the "not allowed to drop a can" code. I'll try to dig out exactly which bit it was...

If freighters could drop contents outside of stations, rich alliances with more ISK than man-hours would shoot down their own freighters just to make huge deliveries to non-station locations.
Outpost construction would take considerably less labor if freighters dropped cans.

Last time I checked... a jet can held 27,500 m3 A "general freight container" = 120,000 m3
