I remember an old Elite,Elite 2 and Frontier First Encounters which I was playing for years back in '90s. Now finally new version is coming. Some feedback from beta testers: "Wesley Magyar Ive been playing ED For awhile now. And it is sincerely the best damn game ive ever played.... and its not even close to complete. Ive been an Eve Online player since 2006, Since ive gotten into the Beta for this i have logged into eve twice.... i have a feeling Eve Is Doomed... This game is the second coming.... i kid you not.n++" and "Matthew Downing I've played EVE from when it was in Beta. I sold my main character about a month after I bought ED premium beta; I know there is no way I'm going back. Fair enough I got into Eve because it was like the new and MMO Elite I'd been craving for... But now I can get the game I really wanted in the first place!" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISR4ebdGlOk see for yourselves. In my opinion current biggest problem in Eve is lack of new content added to game for like last 3 years or so... Of course DX11 and game mechanic changes are all nice, but its not the thing what will make me stay for much long, especially with new fresh and very good competitor on market. I've been playing Eve since Apocrypha and I see that Eve is slowly going downhill all the time since then. Back then we had online around 60-70k ppl on server at given timezone all the time, now it's not going higher than 35k ppl online. Most of us run 2+ accounts, some even more than 10+ at same time so I'm guessing that real ammount of people playing Eve is not more than 10-12k people. Elite has now over 25k ppl playing beta ( you can't multibox there ) - it speaks for itself.
EVE has needed some real competition for a long time now. |

Omgosh - noobs the lot of you.
Elite has a ranking for players that goes something like : harmless, wanted, dangerous
The name sort of says "you'll play for a while" because you would have to I order to get that assignation
Is elite even multiplayer? It's remembered for its universe being vast but fitting in 8k because it's generated off of a seed. Change the seed and you get an entirely new world.
You find this sort of thing in minecraft.
Eve is completely the opposite. It's finite and we all have the same universe and experience the gates and planets in exactly the same order every day with the exception of wormholes that give us some randomness in where you connect.
EVe PDU number is in decline mostly because bottling is being detected a whole lot more intelligently
Fact it's summer and right now, many FCs will be on duality (with 20+ players for teams) testing out setups daily.
Remove FCs from TQ and thei hardcore pvpers and you will see not a lot going on
All of this lacks any mystery with the exception of the dooms bringers. Sure game could be healthier but it's not looking to "cash out" by gaining millions of temporary accounts. It's designed for the long haul and many of the power blocks you see today will be dead and replaced by new ones tomorrow. We have been through this many times although seems players want to bore us a bit with lack of new power blocks recently.
So it's not dying, it's just not growing out of control and players aren't as brave as they use to be. Content to do nothing and be nothing. Different problem.

Guys its Summer. People are outside, you know, enjoying the Sun and going to the beach and vacations and festivals and parties.
EVE always has better numbers when the weather is crap and it is dark by 5pm.
ED and SC are interesting games but CCP have taken note and are making Valkyrie.
Horses for courses.

So in 2009 there were 60-70k people online at all times?
If only there was some way that the number of users online could be viewed.

I was kind off with you until this point.
There is nothing worse when people make massive overstatements to try and prove the point they are making. All it does is make you look you have no idea.
Apocrypha was released in 2009. The PCU record for 2009 was just over 45,000.. that is along way from your 60-70k pcu at any given time zone.
I mean Eve has only hit over 60k on a handful of occasions and this was due to massive advertising / player driven events / fanfest etc to break the PCU record.
Eve has never and will most likely never reach 70k. |

You're probably not old enough to remember the original. There was a progression of your character's title. The last three were Dangerous, Deadly, Elite. I think you had to kill 1,000,000 NPCs or something stupid to get the Elite title. I only got as far as Deadly.
Anyway, that explains the name, then...

I've playing eve for 8 years now, and I'm in E:D's alpha since last year December.
And while yes, especially lately it has occupied a chunk of time that I'd usually have used for playing EVE, I don't think EVE is doomed.
First of all they are two very different games, both of them with their advantages and disadvantages. EVE is a strategical / tactical game, E:D is an action game. So one can not replace the other.
Also E:D is not going for a full "one universe" approach (there is an opt out incl. way back in through grouping and solo for people who don't want to play with others), so it won't create what I personally love about EVE most. A consistent and evolving universe where you are a part of what happens. 3rdPartyEve.net - your catalogue for 3rd party applications |

If they had made a sensible argument and compared Elite with, say, Star Citizen or X Rebirth, they'd have some semblance of a point. E:D will (at first glance) very clearly be the winner in that competition since X-R was dead on arrival; SC is proving itself yet another Roberts product every day; and E:D actually delivers.
If they had taken just a minute or two to actually research the game they're trying to shill against (and the one they're trying to shill for) they wouldn't instantly be caught lying like the OP has and their point would actually not be trivially dismissed as complete nonsense.
Instead, they just manage to spread the impression that E:D is in just as dire straits as its competitors, because if this is the kind of bottom-rung incompetent shills Braben has to rely on, he's screwedGǪ GÇ£If you're not willing to fight for what you have in GëívGëí you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.GÇ¥

The is no game will ever threaten the core player base that Eve has.
However what these other games can do is take away those players who do not get involved in the large scale fleet battles, that do not enjoy being ganked, that do not really enjoy the PvP side of Eve but are only here because there are no other MMO Space Sims.
They enjoy the manufacturing, the exploration side of things.
It has always been my argument that games like SC could have effect on the Eve as these kind of people could leave Eve and people who are looking for a space sim who will would otherwise come here will now go to games such as SC.
Of course there will people who will say great let them leave, we do not want people like there here, these kind of people I like to call idiots.
With every player who unsubs that is less income for CCP which means less money being available to be spent on Eve.
So whilst I believe there will never be a Eve Killer as such, each game of these games do have the potential to very slowly chip away at Eve player base and before you know it subs are down and the game as a whole suffers. |

Yup... Eve Online is doomed... not because of the game OP is going on about... but because of the upcoming Firefly game that is being developed! Eve is too far entrenched for some new upstart to really bugger with it too much. May lose a few subscribers because of a game, but not enough to hurt it.
The thing that can doom EVE is though is CCP themselves messing with the game so much that people find it disheartening, so they go seek something else. Or CCP not doing stuff to keep EVE exciting to the players. I think the only thing that can kill EVE is CCP themselves. |

A few subscribers here, a few subscribers there, not enough to do any real damage in the short term but when you add up all those lost subscribers over a long period of time it adds up and all of sudden your in dangerous territory.

I guess it's obvious from your mighty post EVE MUST be doomed!
I remember when it was doomed because of Skyrim...remember that? Then, it was doomed because of Rift...remember that? THEN, it was doomed because of Star Wars the OLD (something with an R). I certainly remember THAT! NOW it's doomed because of...what was that name again...Dangerous Elites...something. Anyway...cool. Doomed.
You stop sassing Elite right now! Besides, if you'd knew your Eve-history, you would know those Icelandic crazies got inspired by the original Elite, too. So in a way, Eve Online and Elite: Dangerous, are both siblings from the same branch of the family.
But to be honest, Eve Online is doomed like everything is. We will die, there is now way around it. Even Eve Online will come to an end someday. In the end, even matter itself will disintegrate. So enjoy the few billion years we have, they will be gone soon. |

Elite Dangerous players need to come up with another acronym to use. Every time I see "ED", I think "Erectile Dysfunction?" or "THE FAMOUS MR. ED!", or Ed, Edd, and Eddie!
Anyway, I agree with Prince Kobol and ILB. I think that EvE could be hurt by ED but it won't kill EvE. CCP are really the only ones that can do that, and even then they'd have to try pretty hard.
As a parallel, look at Ultima Online. How many direct competitors have been released since that game started? It's still going, and people are still paying subscriptions and playing afaik. EQ1, EQ2, SWG, WOW, just to name a few. EvE will be the same way.

EVE is a mistress u can never leave.she always drags you back into new eden kicking and screaming. So EVE is never going to die unless CCP make some really bad choices.
The only issue i have these days is finding the time and energy to play, i have had many a month just doing skills and playing other games. i blame lack of will power and damn steam sales.
I think the only issue i find with EVE and CCP is the fact they want to make eve the totally inclusive SCI FI MMORPG. I.E Walking on stations/planets/exploration/stargates/comets. But they are struggling to actually make that happen or the lead time is so long it usually gets canned or put off for later. or the player base rage quits and has a tantrum and they change their focus. Or they just make seperate games for these things. Kinda not the all inclusive SCI Fi MMO but never mind
Their is a genuine risk i think of the playerbase shrinking because look at what you are able to do in star citizen/elite/firefly online. Land on planets, walk in stations/ships & more. It all depends on the player if they prefer clicking in space and pressing f1/2/3/4 to fight or dog fighting/exploring with a joystick. I love eve + the X-series, so i enjoy both game styles.
Lost my point but still i don't see eve dying but just struggling to keep up. Mal: "If anyone gets nosy, just...you know... shoot 'em. "

Two replies, first to you:
CCP always wanted an imersivie vast sci-fi game. They had huge plans, but got sidetracked by a good rule in business, never keep your eggs in one basket. CCP took money out of eve and put it into WoD. Then they got it in their heads that if they added lots of microtransactions, and made eve more P2W they would get more money! but the player base smacked them in the head and reminded them we are here. CCP then shifted gears and started fixing eve... but then they still wanted eggs in othe baskets, so again shifted money to WoD, and got another brilliant idea to expand eve, but did it wrong. They spent money on Dust, and it never reached its potential, for whatever reason. CCP has again changed course, and might be realizing that's its greatest strength at this time, is the EVE IP on pc. What I am fairly sure is going to happen, Valk, Legion will launch with very little eve interaction, but this will give ccp a money boost to finish 'fixing eve' and hopefully unifiy it all together, with the 4th game (yes I know, speculation based on ccp presents, sue me) but we will see.
To the OP: Elite and SC, like everyother game before it that was going to kill eve, will do one of two things:
1) either drain some subs for a while, till players get bored of the new shiney and come back home to eve. (sometimes it takea a while, but eventually everyone who leaves eves checks on it and comes back)
or
2) Flops.
No one game will kill eve. Some will drain subs, but people will return after the new game gets tired, or they get bored, or ccp launches something that gets them excited. It happens all the time. But I will say this, competition is good. Even one that might flop, hype might light a fire under CCP's ass, and they might finally get eve to where they always wanted it, one of the greatest games ever made. Or they could **** it up and we will all crash and burn. *shrugs* In a room full of dumb blondes, EvE is the smart red head on the other side of the room.-á Lots of men like dumb blondes, and not everyone will like the smart red head, but she doesn;t need to change to be a dumb blonde.-á She is perfect how she is.-á Thats EvE vs other mmo's.-á You either like the red head, or you don't. |

to achieve that these games (elite and SC at least) use instancing so if a hundred players dock at the same station or warp to the same location they don't see a hundred players like in eve. they're all off on parallel grids unable to interact. that's fundamentally the difference between eve and these other space games. eve may struggle with large fleet warfare sometimes but it is at least possible to do that and all the complex social interaction you get in a single instanced, high latency game. i doubt elite will manage any social grouping more upscale than clans but then they're perfectly suited to that kind of game.
