Eve = Chess in space therefor WoW = Tic Tac Toe in a forest.

You studied the tutorial, yet you can't move?
Honestly, by your post, I think you need a different MMO personally.

The tutorial explains it in tiny steps. Doubleclick in the direction you wanna fly for close range movement.
Do the ingame tutorial. You can read it in a couple of languages too if you're not comfortable with English. The tutorial and the following missions yield about half a million Isk and a basic understanding of the game.
The other areas of the game basically all follow the same way to interact. When Aura tells you to use a rightclick if you're sure how something works, wshe's right most of the time *grins*

Edited by: Eternal Fury on 24/07/2006 18:28:13 becuase the weapons on your ship can fire 360 degree's around you, there is no need for such precise movements with the ships.
If you want to stay close to a ship, use the orbit, or keep at XXX range options in your overview.
EvE has a VERY steep learning curve if you are comeing from one of the simpler MMO's like WoW.
It will take you a week or 4 to get used to it.
Take your time. Get comfortable with it. You will be rewarded in the long run.
Ohh, and don't expect to reach lvl 60 in a few months. This is a long term game. Think half years/years for your planning :)
Ohh crap.. Ok.
First, there are no level as you know if from WoW. There are skill points which allow you to guestimate how long someone has played, but those skill points could be in combat skills, tradeing skills, mining skills or corp management skills and so on.
you can PvP right from the start.
But I would HIGHLY reccomend that you use the 14 day trial to learn how to play the game before you go out and become a target for someone's guns. You WILL die if you can't even navigate around. You might get killed by a carebare for cripes sake.. Learn to play before you PvP..
Crawl first, then walk, then run, then ask for the keys to daddy's space ship.

While it's nice to see someone do some homework, HK, I'm a little disappointed that you even visit that site. Go take a shower!

Originally by: Ghosthowl How do you move???!
You can manually move by double clicking in the direction you want to move. Other methods of moving include selecting a target and Keep At Range or Orbit or Approach. Keep At Range will follow your target at the selected range. Orbit will circle your target at the selected range. Approach will fly you directly to the target. Warping is used to quickly reach a distant point.
Originally by: Ghosthowl is it all warping? Then if its all warping how do you PVP??
As above there are many other methods of movement. In general PvP would be a series of manual zig zags towards your oppoenent untill you're at your weapons range then orbiting. This way you keep your "transversal volocity" up. (Think: how hard you are to hit.) You only warp into or out of a battle, never within on.
Originally by: Ghosthowl studied the tutorial and i was like WTF it will take all my trial period just on the tutorial.
You seriously need to redo is again. Stop and restart if you don't fully understand a section. Do not skip anything, even if it's boring. EVE is NOT for the impatient or those on Ritilin. It's a deep game with a lot to absorb at once. Experienced players can progress though the tutorial, step by step, in about 2 hours. Expect to spend 4.
Since you're on trial, do not listen to people telling you to train Learning skills, they will do nothing for you in your first two weeks. Train skills to get cool guns and stuff. You'll enjoy EVE much more that way.
Originally by: Ghosthowl Now now dont get me wrong iam a ex WoW player looking for a good mmorpg,
Good for you! Just remember EVE isn't WoW, it's not even close to WoW. Nothing you learned in the 3 weeks maxing out WoW will be applicable to EVE.
Originally by: Ghosthowl but is this all click on that area to move etc? can i use WASD keys? Its like chest in space.
You can't WASD. Think of EVE as more of a RTS like Starcraft than a CounterStrike/WoW clone. Your comparison to Chess in space is very close. Think of your ship as a playing piece on a map instead of "you" in space. -- Lil Miner Newbie Skills Roadmap | Visual Building Guide (Both work in game too!) |

Double-click on the location you wish to go.
or
You can select objects in space and a menu of options will apear for that object. These commands include "Approach" and "orbit".
These 3 modes of navigating are used to manuver your ship in PvP also.
No WASD here as space is 3D. Just keep at it, it will become second nature to you.

Newfound respect for ghosthowl. Yes, there are alot of similarities between UO and EVE. At least the UO I remember way back when...

Took me 4hrs (straight) to get throught the tutorial and to understand it. Longest time I've ever spent learning how to play a game.
Basically point and click...pretty much all you do. Aside from typing messages. I really need a signature. |
