Amongst all the players of eve there must be some true metal fans out there.. So what bands you guys into listening to/seeing? Im a big Emperor fan personally- saw their reunion gig at Inferno Fest in Norway in April, and saw them last week and Wacken Open Air in Germany. Anyone been to any decent European metal festivals that they would recommend? Into many styles of metal though; mainly black, death, thrash and power metal.. ***

What's true metal fans?
Love bands like Nightwish and Within Temptation ( not the best, but dutch like me, and not bad ) Also like Rammstein, but that's as far as it goes in terms of grunting etc. Like women voices, and preferably, understandable women voices. Rammstein for instance i can actually understand and they give awesome shows and good sound, but a lot of it I can't understand a word, and really listen for the lyrics a swell.

Well, true metal fans are usually into Manowar, Iron Maiden, Hammerfall, Edguy and so on, however I think he rather meant "real metal fans" as in beeing a real metalhead. I usually listen to Viking- (Amon Amarth, Turisas, Einherjer), Pagan- (Primordial, Drudkh, Nagelfar) and Blackmetal (Emperor, Enslaved) but most of the other stuff is fine too except for too extreme fairy power metal :o
Festivals I've visited so far this year: Rock Hard (bad lineup but only a 10 minute drive by car), Ultima Ratio (well, not really a festival except you count sleeping at the train station as camping), Dong Open Air (absolutely ******* awesome, too bad I can't remember most of it due to beeing wasted) and W:O:A (overcrowded, expensive .. meh, but I saw Emperor).

Count on a largely European game like EVE to get the metal fans.
Here in America, it's all about trashy pop music, corporate boardroom-manufactured "hip hop" and other abominations.

Edited by: valerydarcy on 10/08/2006 13:52:26 cool.. nice to see some real metalheads out there. ministry were absolutely killer at wacken- despite the first half of their set ebing off the new album (which is still awesome).
children of bodom was a bit depressing, althoughtheir set was really cool with plenty of old songs, they butchered 'towards dead end' by cutting the end of the song (the best bit) off. not to mention every time alexi opened his mouth in between tracks he sounded like a fred durst wannabe
and i am teh hardcore empeor fan!! at inferno in norway my mate an i got to the sign session 5 hrs early and i was 1st in line :DD their fan club guy bumped into me at the venure the next day and said 'hey hey- its europes biggest emperor fan!' lol - not to mention i have an emperor tattoo on my arm
i was considering an eastern european metal fest next year- they have a really underground bm/dm scene there completely different to the rest of europe/america. theres some big fests in slovenia and ukraine im looking into.. eg: http://mhm-fest.com/ru/info/
earthshaker fest in south germany seems to always have a seriously badass lineup.

Its sad but true. There are very few chances here in the states to really get going w/anything that isn't popified. Although, there is alwasy the yearly Headbangers Ball Tours and Ozzfest. Saddly thats about all there is.
As for me its mainly Pantera, Metalica, Damage Plan (RIP Dime) and a splatering of others here and there.
Sidenote- I feel special, for once I can say I actually listen to one of the Eruo bands listed, although the others are complete mysteries to me. Nightwish FTW

metals not about wearing anything specific.. and if youre the type that suggests it is youre a****. admitteldy most end up resembling one guise or other, but then i suppose its just a metal thing. patch jackets for example, its not law or code- but metallers enojy sewing patches of their favourite bands onto every speare sapce of clothing possible.
Aria are awesome- russian metal 4tw seen metal church live twice- theyre pretty killer live. Judas priest i saw on a tour with scorpions last year, butit was at a pretty big venue and i always leave those occasion feeling a bit wanting- its all about the smallest venues. seen primal fear once, but foind them to be a bit generic- cool vocalist though. and believe it or not i have a wolf album- and i think youre the first guy ive met thats heard of them But yes, it is indeed all about Gamma Ray ***

Yeah, the States suck for metal, airwaves littered with this emo/screamo crap, almost painful trying to stomach that stuff as the new "hardcore". I don't listen to a lot of music anymore, still a fan of Sepultura and to lesser extent Soulfly, Slayer, Voivode (old school, never remember how to spell that), Ministry, Megadeth, old Metallica, etc. Oh yeah, I <3 Nailbomb.

listen to everyday: Amon Amarth In Flames Blind Guardian Korpiklaani Finntroll
among others.
Have to say the WET stage is the heart and soul of Wacken screw the big acts go for the small bands. They really really appreciate their fans.
(I was MAD AS EVER at Ministry buggers played longer than they were supposed to and Amon Amarth had a few technical problems :( )

le sigh
well, just for you then, the big print version with the crayola crayon pictures...
True metal, as opposed to any other rubbish is quite simple. Its about music. perhaps it would be easier to describe what is not, to more clearly establish what is. for a good example of what is not, turn on kerrap and turn your attention to the multitude of pathetic childish bands whos main goal is to look pretty, to make homosexual songs about how their parents make them do their homework and their dads bum them so millions of little whiney teenagers will spend all their money on their shyte manufactured 'music'. for them, its about what their agencies tell them little kiddies want to buy. its not about music, but rather about money. this makes these thousands of bands NO different to the crap produced from the likes of pop idol. real metal is about talented writing with little regard for polished production quality, music that you can bang your head to, drink loads of beer to and have a laugh. not some ******* emo **** sold in woolworths that some 15 yr old**** listens to in his bedroom whilst scratching himself with a bic razor. this is not to say a band cannot enojoy commercial success- cradle of filth are a good example of this- their last few albums have sold a shed load of copies, partly due to channels like kerrap and s**** etc.. however, when it came down to it and sony told them to play a more mainstreem style, they turned down the massive contract and went back to recording on their own house lable. metallica on the other hand said 'great'- and completely changed their style to increase sales. they are now ranked 5th in the entire music industry for record sales, after michael jackson. this is pretty ******* far from true. its giving two fingers too their old fans who got them their in order to gain a bigger market of noobs who are willing to throw their money at them. when it comes to images and conformatsim and stereotypes and all that bs, if youre concerned with that, join the kerrap crowd. anyone whos into real metal understands that aside from the performers, image has little or nothing to do with it. as afore mentioned, yes there are some consistancies within the metal scene when it comes to dress, ie leather, denim, combat boots etc. reasons for these, a mixture of practicality, band influence, personal taste-whatevever, but under no circumstances should it be because you think thats the way you should or shouldnt look because you listen to a particualr type of music- and trust me, those that do stick out like a sore thumb in the company of those that dont.

Just to be clear on this i'm not some kid who listens to Kerrang, im in my mid thirties and grew up on Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC and am one of the biggest Ministry fans around, I will listen to anything thats not pop or hip hop.

A "true metal fan" in my eyes is someone who mainly listens to Hard Rock and all forms of Metal. And above all someone who listens to that kind of music because he LIKES IT! and not someone who tends to like it for the sake of being part of the metal-group (wannabee so to say)

I am a metal fan bigtime. My first metal albums (yes, real record albums hehe with great artwork) were Sabbath and Iron Maiden. My first metal CD: Metallica's Master of Puppets. One of the best metal albums ever made. I still listen to it every once in awhile.
Some of my favorite bands in no particular order:
Tool (what I like to call cerebrial metal. These guys are great in concert.)
Dream Theater (probably the best musicians in in metal, not to mention any music. I would love to see these Limp Bizkits wussies try to play some of DT's music live .)
Black Sabbath (All of the first albums all the way up to when Dio was fronting for them. Don't care for most of the stuff afterwards. Not to mention the godfathers of metal, no question.)
Slayer (Reign in Blood was my first thrash album. Still one of the most aggressive albumes ever made. To me Reign and Metallica's Puppets reign as the best metal albums ever made and the most influential.)
Celtic Frost (one of the first black metal bands. My favorite album of theirs was Into the Pandemonium. I guess you could call them avant garde in some respects.)
There are lots of others which I will update when I remember, too damn early

LOL
I know I actually should ignore you...
There's a cultural youth centre not far from here. often they have metal bands playing. You know what? NEVER EVER has there ben a fight between metalheads there. Once in a while they have a dance party. Result: fights between dance-lovers. Also r&b acts once in a while. Result: Same as the dance parties.

i believe that was sarcasm, considering the link to recenty played tracks.. and, despite the fact that you have a mis-titled cover of the final coutdown there, the fact that you have recently listened to Sonata Arctica ű Destruction Preventer makes it all good :p that song pwnzorz

Don't start that. My father's probably the most hardcore conservative/Republican I've ever meet, and he raised me listening to his Metallica, Maiden, Megadeth and Sabbath vinyl collection.

Dunno what you figure as "true" metalhead, but my current favourite bands:
Nightwish Battlelore After Forever Within Temptation Black Label Society Tristania Evanescence Linkin Park Disturbed Blind Guardian
In that order
Nightwish FTW <3 It's a band that for me will never get old
I prefer the bands with a female lead, it gives a nice contrast between the vocals and the music that really does it for me.

dont get me wrong, i have all their albums as well, they are good- saw em live twice with tarja- and they were pretty magical live. but theyve had their chips now- despite the fact that toumas maintains he will find a new vocalist and release a new album, and despite the fact that he wrote all their songs, they still wont be the same again simply because she was the face and the sound of nightwish. ***

most of the bands mentioned here I recognize or even have loads of mp3 songs from
I wear black often because it just looks better on me then say yellow shirts or nice bright orange clothes. Dark colours just suit my skin colour better, bright stuff makes me look even more dreadful

Yeah, I really dunno how that's gonna turn out. There could be some good candidates, Amy Lee from Evanescence could be good(but I *really* don't see that happening), and the leads from Battlelore, Tristania and After Forever have decent voices as well. I think for it to be a successful change that the music will have to make an adjustment too. I don't see anyone pulling off songs like Ghost Love Score, Nemo, Come Cover Me or Bless the Child the way Tarja did. I'm keeping an open mind though.

and yeah, nightwish wont be the same- but to be honest, i think id be happier if they stopped now. full stop. they wont ever match what they made on oceanborn and wishmaster, and old fans will be forever comparing their new material back to this- quit whilst theyre still ahead say i. ***

Well honestly their new album just doesn't sound the same as their older stuff. I've been listening to them everyday while waiting for that bus (which is always late, by the way) and while I love their music, the new stuff just doesn't seem to fit.
And yeah, Wintersun are awesome. I'm eager to hear out their new album they've been working on this year!

yeah, cob have changed for the worse. i have all their albums, and many ftr/hatebreeder era bootlegs and alexi used to sound pretty normal. but since they released their latest ( which is pretty ****e in all fairness) hes started making every effort to sound like an absolute ****. as much as i enjoyed their set at wacken this year it would have been teice as good if he didnt open his mouth in between tracks.
wintersun- awesome. their set was incredible, but i was a tad disappointed that despite having completed their new album they didnt play a single track off it. but then im a little unsure as to how good its gonna be- the debut album was awesome, but it was so good itll be hard to match with a follow up- theyve set the standard very high. but then i suspect that most iof the material off that album was written originally with intent for ensiferum, and when he left he put it all into the new band. but heh, we'll see. ***

Ah that's a shame, they were kinda drowned out a bit by the other stage weren't they. I was right at the front, and the surge that came when Koripklaani started you wouldn't believe. It was like, the entire festival was trying devoutly to cram as many people into the party stage area, as was humanly possible.
After their huge following at Wacken, I'm betting they're getting a EU tour lined up. Korpiklaani, in a pub, now THAT is fun. If there are still places, you should sign up for the Ragnorok festival up in Scotland(http://www.ragnarokfestival.com/), as Korpiklaani are playing, and apparently the venue is a tiny little place :).

I dunno, Trivium aren't very bad - In fact I'd go so far as to say that the instrumentals are pretty good. It's just that the singer sucks so much, the sheer volume of his sucking is so incredible, his suck is about to reach critical mass, and fall in on itself, creating a black hole of pure, unfiltered suck.
