Since tanking is such a popular discussion topic nowadays I just got a thought that which ships ingame are actually the ultimate tankers of them all? What I'm looking is...
1) ...the ultimate overall shield tanker (maximum averaged total tanked DPS) 2) ...the ultimate overall armor tanker (maximum averaged total tanked DPS) 3) ...the ultimate overall multitanker (using both shield and armor tanking, maybe even hull tanking ) 4) ...best one damagetype shield tankers (for those nberrare "I must encourter this fleet of titans blasting at me!" situations) 5) ...same as 4 but for armor 6) ...same as 3 with one dmgtype
...and so on, I assume you got the point by now. Also as a bonus question, is hull tanking actually possible yet? ------- I'm not an alt. |

Hull tanking- only by using a Hull Repairer (a mid-slot item, and slow as hell), and a damage control mod to increase the resists of the hull (tht only way possible to do so).

The ultimate tank is formed by the legendary 'GM Shield Extender', which gives 400,000 bonus (to those blessed with Polaris V of course!) for 1TF and 1MW fitting.
I'm not kidding, it's really in the database.

I guess your not talking about capital ships here, sooo..
Battleships im thinking something like..
Shields > Rattlesnake outfitted with Gistii / Pith stuff. You can get about 17k shield, 70% accross the board resistances and 2100 ish shields every 2 seconds for 167 cap. with a full set of crystal ofc.
Armour > Nightmare outfitted with Corpium stuff. With a slave set, and maxed skills you get like 13k armour before plates. Then its just EANs all the way!

Personally i'd guess command sships do the best DPS.
Sleipnir + Officer stuff must get some stupid tanking. More so with gang mods

Actually, you'll get a lot more than that. If memory serves you get 12750 hp from skills (hull upgrades 5) which should get you somewhere close to 19.000 with a slave set, and a bit below that with a low-grade set.

I was able to get a Caracal up to 10000+ Shields
4 Large F-S9 Extenders Of course it had no resists so you took full damage to the shields from EM. You Can go far if you have the right skills behind you.
But if you can tank the damage with hardeners 10k could seem more like 12k shields when you really only have 6k ------------------------------------- Sammael's Legion |

i think the vulture would beat the claymore in tanking since it has resist bonus, which is generally thought to be better than the boost one, and it has larger shield , larger cap, and same slot setup. Just need to fill up that em hole with one gist x type photon hard ;)

not really. the resistance bonus gives a +33% tank bonus, while the sleipnir/claymore/cyclone gives a +37.5% tank bonus
what is true though is that the more damage you are receiving after your tank is already broken, the better the resistance bonus is

Edited by: eLLioTT wave on 17/08/2006 08:02:45 Well this is the easiest one ever: 1. ultimate shield tanker = Leviathan 2. ultimate armor tanker = Avatar 3. ultimate overall multitanker = Leviathan with crystal set
4 = Leviathan 5 = avatar 6 leviathan
hull tanking a titan will work well for a long time... depends whats shooting you. If you get to where it starts turning red i think thats when you warp/jump out and nothing they can do to stop you cos immune to all EW :)
Anyone who thinks armor tanking is better needs to try the faction high end of both sides ;) |

I predict someone is going to prove you wrong via the use of complicated maths and some crazy ISK to Tankability ratio.
...on the other hand using a banana might be a viable alternative.

I'm pretty sure a dread in siege mode can tank alot more damage than any titan.

You're right. On the other hand, a Phoenix with a maxed out (gang skills / mindlink) vulture (only using passive defense) is a nice combo.
The main problem is that most phoenix pilot go for cap recharger rather than getting more resistance, it's understandable and totally the right thing to do, but... This topic doesn't specify the 'time' that they have to tank the best out of every other ships, so meh.
Multi 40%++ Amps Phoenix > all.

i think all the implant sets don't work on capital ships
Since we're talking 'tanking', can I assume you want continuous tank, no need for doing dmg etc? and are we assuming the tanking ship is lying dead in space? cos you can tank pretty mean going 6-8 kmps...

Edited by: Angus Torg on 17/08/2006 11:04:37 4) Passive shield tanked Vulture 4tw.
1 * Warfare Link: Shield Harmonizing 1 * 64% Thermic Hardener 2 * 64% Kinetic Hardener 3 * Large Shield Extender II 4 * Shield Power Relay I
Siege Warfare Mindlink Gnome KVA2000 Implant Gnome KYA2000 Implant
Gives a shield strength of 15k with a shield recharge time of 292 seconds -> Boost per second ~ 130 HP. And if my calculations are correct, the resistances are approx. 97% against kinetic damage and 96% against thermal damage. Holds forever against 3300 DPS of KIN/THER dmage (1650 each). Will it be enough for a 10/10 Serpentis complex?

i would think that the vultures tank is slightly superior to the claymore's (assuming they fit the same grade equipment), because the 25% extra shield resists do not factor in the stacking penalty, and for a full tank set-up you are likely to to have at least 3 shield hardeners, but probably only one shield boost amp. but to be honest there is not much in it

What people seem to fail to understand is. A claymore or sleipnir has the ability to fit a XL shield booster when it has autocannons on.

What people seem to fail to understand is. A vulture can regen up to and around 192 shield points a second, requires no cap, and has huge resistences, without any additional ship mods.
