Edited by: Morvak on 18/08/2006 23:17:34 I'm not college grad with a masters in astronomy, but I'm pretty sure there isn't friction in space.
So if i flicked a pebble in space with my pinky, it would move at that small amount of acceleration forever until it entered into something's gravity. It would never accelerate more or less, just keep a constant speed, correct?
Well if i'm firing propulsion engions that make me go X km's of speed through space, simply turning off the engines wouldn't make the ship stop unless there was some opposing force going the opposite way in which i was travelling, correct?
I was just thinking about this the other night. Maybe i'm wrong, but i think i'm right. And if so, think it should be a feature?
And if i'm wrong, care to elaborate and teach me space mechanics? ; )

Someone once did the math, and determained that space (in eve) has the consitancy of motor oil. No idea if that is correct or not, but I would be willing to bet that it is.

A true newtonian model has been tried in games before, but most are unplayable. Flying in space is completely counter-intuitive to humans.
Real spacecraft have computers to do the calculations for where to aim the craft and how long to burn. The calculations are not particularly complex (iPods and cell phones are much, much more advanced computers than what they had on the Apollo missions), but the computers are far less error prone. There have been a few instances of computer failure that required a human pilot to do the burn, but it's tricky even for a good pilot.
Sure, it might be possible to train yourself to handle that sort of flight system, but how many people would be willing to go to that much effort for a game? ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Your shields generate a reveresed polaric field that is reflected by the gravitation pull in the system, this causes it to come to a stop and while running leaves you unable to move.
There now go back to playing. -----

It's a strange new force called Suspension of Disbelief.
But seriously, you're quite correct. In reality the easy way would be to rotate the ship and fire the thrusters in the reverse direction.

Inertia nullifiers: They generate a damping field that negates the effects of inertia. If a ship doesnĘt build inertia then when you stop thrusting the ship will stop.

physics dont really apply in eve. The simply art of turning around is enough to realise this.

Because in Iwar and Iwar2 it was kinda embarrssing to noticethat all you fancy evasive leet endedup in just a slow moving tumble that actually made it more easy for the NPCs to shoot you? ========= "I am not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why can`t we just take the safety labels off everything and let the problem fix its self |

There have been a lot of posts about the physics of EVE.
Some of them came from people who made such detailed scholarly arguments that I had to beleive that they were physics professors.
Even so. Eve is a universe unto itself and has nothing to do with your real-life universe.
I will list one example.
A torpedo does full damage on a battleship, but next to no damage on a frigate or interceptor.
Let me project that into Real Life.
Yesterday, my bad neighbor shot me with a 40mm grenade.
I was holding my cat by its tail.
My dog was standing right next to me.
There was a mouse somewhere around my feet.
1. The cat sustained no damage (no hitpoints) at at all.
2. The dog got a little of his hair burned.
3. I died, but only because I was bigger than the cat and the dog.
4. The mouse did not even notice the BOOM!
All of this is silly. In real life an explosive weapon will kill me, and will also kill the dog next to me, and the cat that I am kicking, and the mouse in the corner.
Earth First! We will strip-mine the other planets later. |

the voyager probe that sailed out of our solar system a few years back had something about the eqivalent of a 48k sinclair spectrum for its computer, amazing really
the reason you cant have newtonian physics in eve is that there would be no upper limit for speed, you would have battleships going imensly fast (and probably not being able to stop for considerable time) and the game relys on things moving at the rigth speed for their class

doesnt apply because you are all standing still imagine watching that scene in slow motion with the frames at nano second intervals as the grenade explodes you see the explosion spreading towards you, perhaps bits of shrapnel.. if you can move away faster than its aproaching you take no dmg from it
technically this is possible in real life

Long story short it's for gameplay reasons. There are far more space based games that follow the same trend than there are that follow the true "rules" of space flight.
