Oveur's Patch Announcement created quite a stir and raised many questions in the discussion thread. Rather than force players to dig through 6 pages of posts to find answers to their questions, Oveur wrote up a new Dev Blog.
Longer than previous blogs, Oveur addresses many of the questions raised by tomorrow's patch and goes deeper into the reasoning behind the big changes coming with Dragon. This is a must read before the patch tomorrow.

Well, it seems to me they could get rid of a lot of the current python-injection modifications simply by removing the run.py file and making something else compiled do it's job. Of course, I'm sure people would just inject elsewhere, but it would stop a lot of the nubs with no idea what they are doing copy/pasting scripts in

not sure I like that it seems all non-Deadspace missions are gone. They added a bit of a different feel to missions, and spread around the same rut of missions.
I hope with this change, we can get more missions in the future for all classes of agents. Evewn with new missions added to rplace the old missions, it sometimes seems there are not enough vareity of missions for a mission runner.
But all in all, sounds good, just hope everyhting goes well tomarrow

I read the notes and I am wondering if that means agents will no longer give cargo running missions?

No, almost no cargo-running mission.

That's basically it. We're making it far harder to do than before but us assuming that it would remove all would be quite foolish, people will always find a way, which we then need to plug. Repeat ad nauseum.

What will happen to peoples accumulated rp and lp points if the system is being removed as for some folk the accumulation of these has required considerable work and time ?

We're not removing anything you have accumulated with your agent, only the old agent missions he gave you.

Quote: Most courier missions have also been removed. We were going to replace a lot of them with the usual "go there and get stuff" but we felt we weren't doing anyone any favors. They will be replaced, but not in this patch.
Are we carebears going to get a non-combat related series of missions to replace this old missions?
I will miss them and tbh not happy to see them go :(

Sounds good, best of luck with the patch.
When you say you are not replacing the courier missions though - does that mean there really won't be any - or that we will just get the same one a lot?
I am currently training up a pacifist alt who can do courier ones but no combat and it's going to be a bit of a pain to get his standings up if I need to start training combat ships...

With courier missions, they will come back, but we're trying to make them a tad more interesting than flying between stations.

Just having to fly between stations was exactly the reason I did them with my alt. He's an industry char and has sod all combat skills. I also chose them because you can do them without having to babysit your char - shooting things is tricky when you're at work and doing missions in the background :-)

Snap - although making them more interesting would be good in other ways (maybe I would do them while not using afk autopilot!).
And a second question: Does this mean that all combat missions will be deadspace instead of encounters?
Because I really like the fact that encounters let you warp in at different ranges, use bookmarks - basically use some tactics on how you enter a mission unlike the deadspace ones where you get dumped at the same point each time and have no control over it.

Edited by: Talori''i on 21/08/2006 17:08:11 As a Gallente pilot, and one that is looking at taking up some Minmatar on an alt, I am quite annoyed by the MWD not working in deadspace missions, I hope not all of the missions are going to be like this, but I hope there is an easy way to tell the difference like a warning in the mission report you get. They already warn when you can't take ships larger then a frigate...
Gallente aren't exactly known for their tanking skills, more known for their running into and blasting away. And that can be difficult to impossible without an MWD.

Did you actaully bother asking the people that flew these missions the reason they did so? I for some reason bet you didnt. This is the EXACT reason people flew them: they are simple and fast.
Next time ask first, help less.
I have always hated how you seem to forget about some minority of gamers and just have to do things your way all the time. Every patch I read the notes and am like great, up until I see something like this.

I like those stupid missions: go there and fetch me this. I refuse all other missions from agents, certainly the combat mission (I still do trade missions if I find the goodies on the market in a reasonable distance: then it's like a courrier mission anyway).
By removing those the game looses much of it's appeal for me. It's like riping out the post delivery service. Wouldn't you hate it that you can order a book over the Internet but never getting it, because delivery was not included?

Nice blog, but Im not really buying the reasons for patch day having to be hell. Of course you cant test the patch with 28k users online, but its not like its only strange bugs that show up on patch day. It can be anything from chat window copy/paste suddenly not working, font issues and many other small things that annoy people to death.
If it only takes someone 5 minutes to find these small things once they are on TQ, why cant the people who are supposed to test the patch find them months ahead?

Good Blog one question I have is that some old missions had a possiblity that faction rate would spawn droping faction loot. I don;t belive any of the new missions do this. So this mean that the only way we will be able to get faction loot is by belt hunting?
Also bumber about the courior missions. I did alot of those starting off. They are great if you just lost your ship to a combate mission and need to do something to get back on your toes to get a new ship. I feel sorry for the younger players who use those missions. As for you people AFKing those don't feel so sorry for

Lets first see what they are replaced with.
About the patch, will the databases have any effect on the tables that are exported in the dataexport? If so do we get a new export? Lots of tools and websites depend on those files. -- Tsune ni ite, kyu ni awasu

Oveur,
First and foremost - I applaud your blog and personally coming to answer follow-up questions. This smacks of a now medium-sized game company that still makes the small company level of effort and it is appreciated.
Now, to my point. While it would be amazingly tempting for you to give a quick yes to this question, I wonder if this streamlined code has any expectations of decreasing lag? If you candidly say that it won't directly address those issues, then no problem. But, if you honestly think it will, that would be a nice benefit and something we would want to hear.
Sincerely,
DrakeStone

while you're working on the idea of a mobile PDA client ... how about you make a way to change skill training from the EVE-Online website ... i work 10 hours a day and i wake up and leave for work all during down time ... i'm forced to plan my skill training brutally around this schedule (not fun) ... i'm sure you don't want players to be able to abuse the system of changing skill training -
but what if you were able to change 1 skill per day from the website? that way if a skill completes while i'm at work, i can go to the eve website from work and switch to a new skill until i get home
or if you don't want to integrate with the website ... allow us to queue 1 skill when the current skill completes ... skill 1 completes training - the queued skill enters training ... then i can just change or adjust when i get home ... i think many people would like that - quote and stamp this if you agree

How do you know which OS we use?

* defiler stamps a big fat AGREE on that suggestion
It wouldn't benefit me in any significant way, primarily because I don't have internet access at work but also because my char is getting pretty old... That said, I still want to see that functionality, as it would surely benefit lots of players. If only it had been in effect two years ago... ;)
