Hey there.
Its been my long dream to fly a Nightmare simply because of the way it looks, it looks so damn nice. So today I decided to buy one, I know very little of this ship and it wasnt listed in the ship index thread so I ask here.
What is there to know about this ship, strenghts but most imortantly weaknesses. I'll start by pve in it, and when I get to know it and feel comfertable with it I will pvp in it.
Anyone have any experiences to share?

Nightmare is tough ship to fit and fly, partly because of its split high slots...
It has lots of armor hitpoints, but you wont be able to tank it really well because of its rather moderate capacitor... I dont think you will be able to fit it as gank ship, because of lack of really good damage bonuses for its split highslots, maybe you can try fit it as nosferatu ship?
I am dedicated miner... I mine everyday - with my Tachyons...

Well, Tachyons mixed with Nos don't make much sense because you're mixing a sniper weapon with short range nos. The Bhaalgorn would make more sense if you're after a vampire setup. Mega Pulse is more damaging.
There are some good setups discussed for the Nightmare in the past (put Nightmare into that Search box up the top right), but it is a tricky ship to fit. 4xMega Pulse + 4xCruise is the usual setup but it's quite short of cap (even after the boost) for endurance runs.

Yeah guess I should have gone for that navy raven instead. Impulse shopping ftl.
Guess I'll have to put it back on the market. Better make it cheap aswell to be able to get rid of it fairly fast.

It has missile ROF eh? Maybe try a 'phoon like setup? Nosses and Cruise/Torp launchers? ---

Yeah man, if you like it, don't give up on it. There's a good setup for every ship in the game if you can just figure it out.

atm it looks like a killer tanker...not so good on the damage side, its got a lot of base armor..id fly one if i flew amarr. ---------------------------

Not really, sadly. It can't sustain a strong tank like the Apoc can so it ends up only marginally better than any other cap injected dual repping BS.

4 t2 mega pulse 4 t2 siege should be the first thing to fit.
tank the rest, u wont be solo in it.
I like the ship its pretty damaging only if ur using the t2 ammo conflag with t2 rage, hell team up with a huginn and arazu and uve got a sexy little gang there  -------------------------------------------------------- Forever Pirate 2

CPU and Cap are it's biggest weaknesses. If you truly want to make it shine in PVE, you need officer cap rechargers and CPRs. If you don't have the isk for that, the Navy Apoc will end up both outtanking and outdamaging the Nightmare for the same price. Strength is it's got oodles of spare grid. Which means you can fit an uber long range + tank setup on the Nightmare that you can't match with any other Amarr BS.

It looks like a good tank... but its CAP is too small! It can't tank, it can deal much damage because of its 4 turrets/4 launchers high slots...

Its a caldari amarr mix, so fly it like one.
My suggestion:
HI:
4x beams + 4x torps
Med:
Shield tank (MWAHAHAHAHA)+Capinjector
Low:
Heatsinks, BCUs, and tracking enhancers
If it has the grid, replace the beams with tachyons and the torps with cruises.
Go for t2 if you can.
This setup is able to dish out AWESOME close to medium range damage, has a shield tank and the injector makes sure that it works.
Its inspired by the NPC flown nightmares, which always attack you at 44km and seem to be boosting their shields sometimes.

I'm not sure if it fits, but you might try: 4x megapulse, 4x cruise launchers 4x large shield extender II 5x shield power relay, 3x PDU II
Won't be the greatest for anything, but might be fun. |

That works on a Apocalypse u r correct... But not on a Nightmare, the Capacitor is much, much, smaller on a Nightmare...
A Tank Apoc setup won't work sorry... The cap drains quickly, forget your 24hr tank...

you should definantly try to be good and master the ship you have chosen and not jump on any boring (raven) bandwagons :)
Nightmare is one of the ships I dream on (not nightmares, mind you) But so far I only got a Succubus (crap) and a PHANTASM
The Phantasm of mine is my pride and joy. Only ever used for PvP. I chocked the EvE forum users a few weeks ago by posting here saying that I use a Blaster setup for it.
At first I got totally flamed. As expected. But when I laid forth my reasons to this ppl accepted it and actually agreed that it was an okay setup.
The no1 reasons for me to fit blasters to my Phantasm is that my laserskills suck in comparison. Also the ship does not get any Dmg bonuses to lasers (only RoF which will only drain the cap faster, no good enough reason for me to fit a gun which I am not skilled with)
The strenght of both ships is their huge armor HP. And at close range (blasters or ACs) tracking is not so important so it does not matter that it does not have a tracking bonus.
All I know is that my Phantasm is a fantastic ride equipped with Blasters and Nos and a pretty good armro tank.
I would not mind fitting a Nightmare with Blasters or even Railguns.... well maybe not railguns... but it is possible.
I do not like lasers.... and not missiles either
Maybe a Nightmare with MWD and Autocannons? ;]

One thing, if you fly a faction ship for pvp, it's usually better to go for a tanking approach since they attract enemy fire like magnets due to the "pride" of getting a faction ship killmail ... _

Nightmare has the potential to be a monster tank, but small cap and lasers hinder it.
Counter? Launchers + nos. Dps doesn't use cap, nos helps you break enemy tank as well as run your own dual reps. Only problem is that you have 1 less mid slot than a nos domi, especially troublesome if you don't have anyone to tackle for you and want a cap booster as well.

it's strength is it's armor and base firepower imo. but with a mixed weapon system makes its a bad candidat for damage modifiers.
as for weaknesses i'd say its the low cpu output, and it could use more base cap. it's alot better now after they changed it from 4250 to 4750 but... I would have liked to have seen it get 5000 base cap.
the cpu output is what bothers me the most though, the only viable turrets I ever use are pulse, since the beams along with my 4 cruise launchers II's use up so much cpu and gimpe the rest of my setup.

It did work on my ship with maxed cap skills and 3 cap relays.
Anyway, atm I use this: 4x Tachyons II 4x Cruise launchers II
4x faction cap rechargers (20%)
1x Officer rep 3x hardeners 1x damage mod 2x Cap relays.

It's a cardinal rule in EVE that the crappiest looking ships are the best, especially in PVP!
Tempest (flying rusty fence), Dominix (space turd), Raven (one designer designed each side, but they never met each other), Scorpion (dear god, what is that retarded-looking thing?), I'm looking at you!
