So I found out the other day that my boss plays EVE. Belongs to a very big alliance in game. Some people might think that is really cool, you can talk about EVE during lunch or at work. But consider the scenario where say you are both jumping thru 0.0 space and you get jumped by some pirates and you happen to warp out but your RL boss is left behind. What if he got ****ed? Or for any other reason what if he got ****ed at you. Then you come into work the next day and have to see him?
Do you give him ISKies to keep your job?
So far I have done the SMART thing and haven't told him my name or corporation or whatnot. For the sake of my own job, I won't even tell you what company or industry I work for.
But I do know his alliance, his corp, and where he hangs... maybe one day when he leaves that pile of papers on my desk or asks me to come in on Saturday, I'm pretty sure I know what I'll be doing that Sunday.

Only if you live in a country with really, really, REALLY stupid laws. In the UK, if he fires you because of something that happened in an online game, he'd be up in court before you could say BoB. ________________________________________________

Where I work, I am the boss, and 4 out of 10 employees that work for me play eve.
Mainly because I keep talking about it, and because our conferance room has a 1600x1200 projector running eve on friday afternoons. :)

If he were to be fired over that, he wouldn't come out and say "you're fired because you podded me." He would simple say "you're fired"; no explanation, no reason. It's not so much a problem that he can not fire you for such a thing. It's rather the fact that the OP doesn't want to have his boss be mad, annoyed or frustrated because of the hypothetical clash ingame. While you might not be fired, it's never good to have the boss mad at you, it's not that black/white and I do understand the question.
It's a rare situation though. To be honest, I'd never mix job and passtime like that and I wuoldn't give away my ingame identity. -----------------------------------------------

If he's in charge, then he should be professional enough to leave game issues in game and not take it out on you at work.

I'm trying to get my supervisor to play Eve.... he's a big RPG fan already. I think I can convert him if I give him the free 14 day trial.

Actually, they can't. They have to give a reason, even if they make one up. And then if they make it up and get found out when you sue them, they're in even deeper water.
Alternatively they can make you redundant, and never be able to hire anyone in your place, and pay you for the privilege. Time off work ftw :)

Edited by: Scoundrelus on 05/09/2006 15:25:55 In Canada, employees have a 3 month probationary period when they start in which they can be fired with no reason given. Its true that employers cannot fire an employee without a legitimate reason, however an employer can force you to quit by making your life miserable. So in a way, they CAN fire you for no/stupid reason.
But hey, you think YOU have it bad, my boss plays WoW... ===============================================

You could join his corporation in game, gain his trust in game, and then pull off a massive corp theft in game.
Then repeat the above in real life.
The Grand Cayman Islands don't have extradition treaties but do have the internet and beaches.
In times of doubt I ask myself "What would BoB do?", and then do the opposite. |

I told my boss I stopped playing Eve because he asked me what alliance and corp I was in. Apparently we are in rival alliances.
Now when I'm reading the forums at work I have to close the browser if he comes around. I have to pretend I don't play Eve for the sake of my job.

In the UK, that would be classed as "constructive dismissal" and would get you an even greater amount of moolah in the courtroom.

firing people without no reasonable cause = you pay the fired guy ALLOT or he hits the courts and you have to pay even more.
at least here in europe (yes it's an european regulation applyed to many european countries). It's a cool law and the employees like it. They like it so much that a few months back they tried to change it in france somewhat.

It's called At-Will Employment here in the USA and yes you can be fired for no reason at all. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/At-will_employment
