Edited by: Twilight Moon on 15/09/2006 10:19:01 I believe it was a game called "Maurader" on the Amstrad CPC464.
Sill have the Amstrad and the game. I think I was 4 at the time. My parents didnt believe in consoles, I've had a PC only upbringing.

I played consoles games, home computers games but I really can't remember which game was the first. But my first PC game was the one and only X-com Terror from the deep. That game was eating me alive. I was closing the computer (5-6 am), tried to sleep but then ideas, how to deal with a situation, came over me and I was jumping out of the bed to try them. I never finished the game tbh

I can't even remember what my first game was, it was either mario on the Ness or Something on the BBc.
The game that got me into the Amiga was lemmings.
Pc. was DOOM.

After that i got my own Spectrum ZX 48k and was totally hooked to a couple of games, particularly Space Harrier and Horace vs the spiders.
Lots and lots of classics for the C64; pirates, they stole a million and impossible mission are probably the all time favourites.
PC began for me with 4D boxing and Defender of the crown (played it parellel on PC and C64, pc 4 color version looked a lot worse but loaded a lot faster).
Been gaming like crazy ever since.

the exact answer to OPs question, what game got me hooked:
definetely: Wings!! the reason i told my parents something about "informatics" and how important it would be to learn PASCAL in school to get that Amiga500, hehe
other milestones of my gaming career : Asteroids (on a friend's mac) Gianna Sisters (amiga) WipeOut1&2 (psx1) Quake2 (pc) adn this list wouldn't be complete without GTAIII (pc)
ooh, more games pop up: Turrican! and some lcd handheld, can't remember the name.
*haach*, back in the days...

Edited by: Anatolius on 16/09/2006 06:26:02 My first memories of gaming come from watching my father play F-15 Strike Eagle on the C= 64. I actually ended up becoming fairly decent at it, at the age of five or six I believe. That and a host of other games on the C= 64. (I still, to this day, can't beat Raid Over Moscow, though. )
Got a NES eventually, eh, it was a NES. Until I played Bionic Commando. That is the greatest game ever, even better than Contra (which ranks a close second), and probably the defining game that's responsible for me wasting away in front of a CRT right now.

My first PC game was. I believe Outpost. Then Doom *Shareware* for $9.99 Then Ace Over Europe. Doom (full version) US Navy Seals (whew, some ugly graphics, but very tactical game play) Red Baron on-line Warbirds Doom 2 (I remember someones head on a stick as the end boss..John Carmack was it?) X-Wing Crusader: No Remorse (god what were the IRQ and DMA settings?!? DMA 220 or was that IRQ) NASCAR Duke Nuke'em X-Com MOO 2 Dark Forces Age of Empires Silent Hunt Full Throttle (the 1st and last time I played that kind of game) Elder Scrolls Arena Diablo (which I must be the only person who didnt care for it) Red Baron 2 And a few other I remember fondly. Floppys 4tw!!! Lots and lots of floppys...hehehehe
And then my P90 crapped out, end system was like a 450mb and a 1.2gb HD, a Diamond Stealth 2mb graphic accelerator and a whooping 40mb of ram (which btw the 2 stick of 16mb each cost me $180 a piece)

My god, some of you are young. I got started on games in the arcades, as you're supposed to do.
Some early classics were many Atari games at my friends' house. I also remember playing text games on his "computer" many decades ago. Plus there was a cool one I played in the UK on a tape drive (yes, they once existed) I can't really remember much, some sort of adventure/action game circa 1983, but it was great.
The first computer game that really got me hooked was probably Lode Runner. Then a memorable one was Ultima IV that I copied from a friend on my Apple IIE.

Ahh I figured just PC games. But since you said arcades, I'd drop my whole allowance once a week there. The first machine I dropped a quater into was Space Invaders, then came Astroids, Pac-Man, that roller ball football game with just x's and o's, Defender, Beserker, BattleZone, that old wire frame Star Trek game, Black Knight, Q-bert, Pole Position, wire frame Star Wars, Karate Champ, Gauntlet, Elevator Madness, Dragons Lair (which was cool because I'd get the older kids to give me quaters so they could watch me beat it), Space Ace, Chop'Lifter, Russian Attack, and all the classic scrolling shooters, Tempest, Tron (light-cycles rule!!), Dig Dug, Burger Time, Donky Kong, DK Jr, and I could go on and on.
Hows that for a flash-back.
Edit: I could have even included my favorite PinBall machine games.

First game I ever played was Donkey Kong, closely followed by Frogger. My dad had a really old system called a Dragon, which I've never seen anywhere else.
In terms of games I used to play regularly, first one like that for me was Target Renegade on the ZX Spectrum. Used to enjoy Street Fighter I on there too.
Once I got a Master System II, I remember playing World Cup Italia '90 like a maniac. Got to the point where I would use rubbish teams and try to win the World Cup with them. I got China (the absolute worst team in the whole game) to the final and lost late in the game to Germany, 1-2. Think that finally prompted me to give up playing :P ~

Edited by: Dexxal Farcry on 17/09/2006 18:48:56 Wing Commander, the entire series. The Kilrathi had nothing on me, Except for Hobbes, broke my heart when I found out he was a traitor in Wing Commader 3. The movie sucked, but thats what you get when you toss Freddie in place of Luke Skywalker for the role of Christopher Blair. Bastards....
As far as online games, it was Anarchy Online. I still play it now, But the game is starting to show it's age, and customer service at Funcom is worse than the DMV. I'm gonna cancel my account soon I think, Eve seems to more closely fit what I'm looking for now, since I've left the realm of the "hardcore" gamer, to a more casual one.
Oh! And I played Parsec quite a bit on a texas instrament computer, the kind you hooked up to your TV.

I remember playing Pong at the Ice Cream parlor (I'd guess 1973 or 1974).
Space invaders and Dragon Hunting on Atari a few years later.
For arcade, my first favorate was "Defender" (Fly around in a 2D screen in a space fighter, shooting aliens who are trying kidnap people)
For on-line, my first game was "Mankind 1.7". Thats where I made my Signiture statement: "Play nice while you butcher each other" But it seems that some folks here find that offensive (no joke).

The very first electronic game of any sorts I played would have been around 83/84. It was a little miniature version of Pacman that came in its own case and required either an AC adaptor or like 10 batteries to play. My parents didn't buy an adaptor for a couple more years, so I was only ever able to play it for a couple of hours at a time before the batteries would run out. >_<
The very first computer game I remember playing was called Vortex on a friend's BBC B+ (about 1985/86). He had other titles including Repton 3, Citadel and Elite, but Vortex was the first.
The very first computer game of my own was Frogger on the C64 (mid 1987). It was on tape, so it took about half an hour to load. However, after only a couple of weeks my sister fried it after TURNING THE MACHINE OFF WHILE IT WAS LOADING!!~!. That left me with Bruce Lee and Ghostbusters for a few more years until we finally got a disk drive, hehe.
I guess if I had to name *one* title that first got me hooked, it would have been Vortex, but the others I mentioned were also an early influence.

I think I just cried a little at the fact that you felt a need to explain what Defender is. Have we sunk so low and forgot our 4-bit past?
