Depends what you mean.
The first game that I probably broke the 1000 hours of gaming with was Starcraft, mostly playing custom maps on multiplayer (Matrix defense 4TW!)

My very first game was probably Super Mario Bros on NES, my first PC game came with my Packard Bell running Windows 3.1 and featured some really annoying guy who always called me "Enforcer". The game was MegaRace.
I'd say what got me hooked though was X-Wing vs Tie Fighter, and later on Command and Conquer the original. Mechwarrior 2 was the first game I played after getting a new computer (after the old Packard Bell) and I was completely stunned at the graphics in the opening sequence and the overall feel of the game (which I attribute mainly to the awesome music).

Edited by: spurious signal on 14/09/2006 06:26:08 I can remember when the local pub in the big town 20 miles from where we lived got the first Pong console game in and my dad holding me up so I could play it (edit: this would have been around 1975 at a guess, I would have been 6 or 7).
Space Invaders wasn't long after that and things progressed rapidly from there. We had a 2600 too but I suppose the first "home computer" games I played will have been some of the old ZX81 games, the names of which I can't remember now

Super Mario 1. After SNES, there was a dry spell for a bit until my parents got a computer, then I played, Descent 1, Doom 1, and Hexen 1. What really kicked it off, however, was Mechwarrior 2; I've been an avid gamer since I started playing that back in the day.
Now, however, I can't indulge like I used to. I just wish I had the money to upgrade my computer and buy new games for it. -Wrayeth

Haha yeah, back in 1981 they were expensive! Do you remember typing games in from magazines? You'd spend like 3 hours typing the damn thing in in BASIC ffs and they you'd nudge the ZX81 and the glorious 16k RAM pack would wobble and crash the whole thing and you'd lose the lot, lol

16k RAM pack? What 16k RAM pack?
I wrote games in 1k. My greatest success (all the kids at school loved it) was an Asteroids variant. You controlled a capital V, and you had to dodge left and right to avoid the capital O's as they scrolled up the screen. And it only used half the screen, otherwise the memory would overload and crash the game
I did get the RAM extension eventually. What luxury, having a whopping 16k of RAM .. how could any computer ever need more? ________________________________________________

First game I played proper was on Atari ST. I remember "5th gear", etc.
Games I was most into.. me and my brother both getting 80386's when I was about 11. I got "Ultima VII", and my brother got "Wing Commander". Back in the 3.5" floppy days and 40Mb hard drives.
Those were the days.

First computer game I played was Space Invaders. There weren't any other games to speak of at the time.
First game I played on a 'home computer' was Elite on the BBC B, same as Mal. Played it at school, but there was no way of saving your progress, which sucked.
First game on my own computer was Horace Goes Skiing on the ZX Spectrum 48K. It was one of the bundled games that came with it.
First game on a PC - Doom.

Mine has to be one of two, which are both PC games. There were many other older games, but these 2 were about the first I played, and that got me into PC gaming.
The first, I clearly remember, which was Mega Race, this annoying game where once you died you died (which is one of the reasons games today have become so easy in my opinion, too many chances to save). It was a brilliant racing game, you drove futuristic cars and got to shoot a limited amount of weapons, add along the annoying presenter and I could never quiet get passed the first few levels.
The second one being a space defender game (I forget the name), where rockets or meteors from the enemy would come down onto your city, you only had a certain amount of rockets in which to fire back (which had an area effect) to defend yourself.

Mine clearly has to be the old Sega Master System!
I can remember plugging this big red square console in, and spending hours playing ôAlex the Kiddö, and screaming with rage when I died with that annoying death sound that played. I got ours out for nostalgia sake a few weeks ago and its amazing when you compare it with todayÆs consoles, just a start, pointers and A,B buttons to use on the little square controller..
Alex the Kidd was the main one I played, but others that you could plug in (Love the big red square cassettes) included Predator, Rampage, Fantasy Zone and Sonic. I agree with Lintaka though, games today seem to be so much easier when you compare them with things like Alex the Kidd, they seemed much more of a challenge at times. Although saying that I wouldnÆt give up some of todays games for the older counter parts

definetely: Wings!! the reason i told my parents something about "informatics" and how important it would be to learn PASCAL in school to get that Amiga500, hehe
other milestones of my gaming career : Asteroids (on a friend's mac) Gianna Sisters (amiga) WipeOut1&2 (psx1) Quake2 (pc) adn this list wouldn't be complete without GTAIII (pc)
ooh, more games pop up: Turrican! and some lcd handheld, can't remember the name.
*haach*, back in the days...

Playing the original Street Fighter (D0S 1988) with my brothers as we tried to beat the living crap out of eachother, after beating the crap out of eachother. Then Master of Magic cemented my addiction.

Edited by: Anatolius on 16/09/2006 06:26:02 My first memories of gaming come from watching my father play F-15 Strike Eagle on the C= 64. I actually ended up becoming fairly decent at it, at the age of five or six I believe. That and a host of other games on the C= 64. (I still, to this day, can't beat Raid Over Moscow, though. )
Got a NES eventually, eh, it was a NES. Until I played Bionic Commando. That is the greatest game ever, even better than Contra (which ranks a close second), and probably the defining game that's responsible for me wasting away in front of a CRT right now.

My first PC game was. I believe Outpost. Then Doom *Shareware* for $9.99 Then Ace Over Europe. Doom (full version) US Navy Seals (whew, some ugly graphics, but very tactical game play) Red Baron on-line Warbirds Doom 2 (I remember someones head on a stick as the end boss..John Carmack was it?) X-Wing Crusader: No Remorse (god what were the IRQ and DMA settings?!? DMA 220 or was that IRQ) NASCAR Duke Nuke'em X-Com MOO 2 Dark Forces Age of Empires Silent Hunt Full Throttle (the 1st and last time I played that kind of game) Elder Scrolls Arena Diablo (which I must be the only person who didnt care for it) Red Baron 2 And a few other I remember fondly. Floppys 4tw!!! Lots and lots of floppys...hehehehe
And then my P90 crapped out, end system was like a 450mb and a 1.2gb HD, a Diamond Stealth 2mb graphic accelerator and a whooping 40mb of ram (which btw the 2 stick of 16mb each cost me $180 a piece)

My god, some of you are young. I got started on games in the arcades, as you're supposed to do.
Some early classics were many Atari games at my friends' house. I also remember playing text games on his "computer" many decades ago. Plus there was a cool one I played in the UK on a tape drive (yes, they once existed) I can't really remember much, some sort of adventure/action game circa 1983, but it was great.
The first computer game that really got me hooked was probably Lode Runner. Then a memorable one was Ultima IV that I copied from a friend on my Apple IIE.

Ahh I figured just PC games. But since you said arcades, I'd drop my whole allowance once a week there. The first machine I dropped a quater into was Space Invaders, then came Astroids, Pac-Man, that roller ball football game with just x's and o's, Defender, Beserker, BattleZone, that old wire frame Star Trek game, Black Knight, Q-bert, Pole Position, wire frame Star Wars, Karate Champ, Gauntlet, Elevator Madness, Dragons Lair (which was cool because I'd get the older kids to give me quaters so they could watch me beat it), Space Ace, Chop'Lifter, Russian Attack, and all the classic scrolling shooters, Tempest, Tron (light-cycles rule!!), Dig Dug, Burger Time, Donky Kong, DK Jr, and I could go on and on.
Hows that for a flash-back.
Edit: I could have even included my favorite PinBall machine games.

First game I ever played was Donkey Kong, closely followed by Frogger. My dad had a really old system called a Dragon, which I've never seen anywhere else.
In terms of games I used to play regularly, first one like that for me was Target Renegade on the ZX Spectrum. Used to enjoy Street Fighter I on there too.
Once I got a Master System II, I remember playing World Cup Italia '90 like a maniac. Got to the point where I would use rubbish teams and try to win the World Cup with them. I got China (the absolute worst team in the whole game) to the final and lost late in the game to Germany, 1-2. Think that finally prompted me to give up playing :P ~

Edited by: Dexxal Farcry on 17/09/2006 18:48:56 Wing Commander, the entire series. The Kilrathi had nothing on me, Except for Hobbes, broke my heart when I found out he was a traitor in Wing Commader 3. The movie sucked, but thats what you get when you toss Freddie in place of Luke Skywalker for the role of Christopher Blair. Bastards....
As far as online games, it was Anarchy Online. I still play it now, But the game is starting to show it's age, and customer service at Funcom is worse than the DMV. I'm gonna cancel my account soon I think, Eve seems to more closely fit what I'm looking for now, since I've left the realm of the "hardcore" gamer, to a more casual one.
Oh! And I played Parsec quite a bit on a texas instrament computer, the kind you hooked up to your TV.

I remember playing Pong at the Ice Cream parlor (I'd guess 1973 or 1974).
Space invaders and Dragon Hunting on Atari a few years later.
For arcade, my first favorate was "Defender" (Fly around in a 2D screen in a space fighter, shooting aliens who are trying kidnap people)
For on-line, my first game was "Mankind 1.7". Thats where I made my Signiture statement: "Play nice while you butcher each other" But it seems that some folks here find that offensive (no joke).

The very first electronic game of any sorts I played would have been around 83/84. It was a little miniature version of Pacman that came in its own case and required either an AC adaptor or like 10 batteries to play. My parents didn't buy an adaptor for a couple more years, so I was only ever able to play it for a couple of hours at a time before the batteries would run out. >_<
The very first computer game I remember playing was called Vortex on a friend's BBC B+ (about 1985/86). He had other titles including Repton 3, Citadel and Elite, but Vortex was the first.
The very first computer game of my own was Frogger on the C64 (mid 1987). It was on tape, so it took about half an hour to load. However, after only a couple of weeks my sister fried it after TURNING THE MACHINE OFF WHILE IT WAS LOADING!!~!. That left me with Bruce Lee and Ghostbusters for a few more years until we finally got a disk drive, hehe.
I guess if I had to name *one* title that first got me hooked, it would have been Vortex, but the others I mentioned were also an early influence.

I think I just cried a little at the fact that you felt a need to explain what Defender is. Have we sunk so low and forgot our 4-bit past?
