Had me an eye test last week which confirmed pretty much what I already knew, my eyesight had gotten worse in the last 2 years since I last was checked. Mostly prompted by the fact i had managed to lose my second pair of glasses which atm all i need for are driving and looking at overheads for eg,
so they recommended contact lens, and after the intial eye test tried fitting them, then moi, the man, a rugby player, turned into a little girl the second something got near my eyes! Took her (a very nice australian optician) 23 goes!!! to get the contacts in.
Last week I had a care & maintainance appointment where they teach you about putting them in and out, failed miserably there again to even get them in!!!
Second one today (the very patient woman) sat with me for an hour until I finally got them in and out same again once over, finishing the session with very red and sore eyes after prodding them for an hour. Then I had to go back at lunctime because one of the lens (daily lens) had split and they wanted to make sure I had no fragments in my eye.
Back again with the nice australian women and for majority of the very quick exam she had be look down while she looked at my eye, looking down of course, the only thing i could look at was her chest! Not being able to look away even if i wanted to, i had to try and think of anything but that very supurb chest while she was looking as Im sure my pupils were dilating fast
anyway - little story for ya there, just want to know - for anyone else who wears contact lens was it always a fight to get them in and out first few times? Just want to recover some pride by knowing im not a complete and utter pansy :p
have to say though Ive been taken care of very well considering i aint paid a penny yet! (this is with boots opticians and their hawt women who work there!)

Oh, and, yes, it does take some while to get used to jabbing yourself in the eyes every day. Give it a month and you will be a pro.

i had a very similar experience when i first tried contacts, several years ago. its a pain, but after spending a few hours over the next week or so you'll be a pro. also, if your contact tears and leaves a bit in your eye, you will KNOW. or if it folds itself neatly into a pie shaped piece and wedges itself in your tear duct. you'll know then too. that pie shape forms for me when i rub itchy allergy eyes, so be careful of rubbing your eyes to vigoursly if they itch.

Just got mine 2 days ago, took me A LOT of tries to get them in and take them out the first time, not as bad the 2nd day, 3rd day even quicker. It's just practice, it'll become a lot easier. _______________

I had real trouble when I first started wearing contact lenses, my best advice is to perservere with them. When I started wearing them my eyesight was down to about -8 diopters at the age of 8 and declining rapidly. Although I've always been using rigid (gas permeable) lenses I would assume they'd do a similar job for you, for me they have completely stopped the decline of my eyesight. I'm now 25 and my eyesight if anything has improved slightly.
8 was a young age to start wearing them, but I'm so glad my optician came up with the idea, otherwise I'd be pretty much blind by now.

When I first started using contacts, I had an immense amount of trouble putting them in and getting them out, by the doctors technique. Now, it's a piece of cake.
Am I the only one here that puts them in looking straight into the lens, and fitting the lens square on the pupil, without shutting them or looking away? The doctors always do it from an angle, like have me look up to the left, and then put them in from the bottom right of my eye. Takes too long to get right.

It's one of those things you get better at with time, just keep at it. Boys are definitely worse at it than girls, though, because generally we're wimps unless we're showing off.
I only ever wear mine for diving. After wearing glasses for 15 years I feel naked without them. I'm hardly going to pass for a jock anyway, so might as well look intellectual.

Been wearing contacts for 26 years. You young whippersnappers should think yourself blessed that hard contact lenses no longer exist.
Now those were 'hard' in more ways than one.

Don't be too afraid. It's completely unnatural to put something in your eye. It's just wrong! But after a few (hundred) tries, it'll become a casual thing.
It's very normal for some people to have trouble putting in contacts. Not everyone can do it right away. In fact, few can. But you'll eventually get used to it.
I first had contacts before the disposable ones were available, so when I was young.... Wait, I'm getting sidetracked. Just be glad you have the options available that you do. They used to be worse. And don't be discouraged if you can't use them. I, and many people I know, used to use contacts but went back to glasses, because they're just easier to use. Sometimes I miss them, but rarely, and it's never really that bad. Aside from playing sports, there's never a time that one is better than the other, and the only reason I liked contacts while cycling was that my regular glasses kept slipping, and I constantly had to push them back up. But that's how many minutes in a day? And you don't live in a desert, so...

I had the same problem when i first started wearing them and i can throw them in now. Like throwing ninja stars whoosh whoosh in they go.
I will say this though take all the advice and info those opticians gave you on how to put them in....and chuck it out the nearest window.
While looking directly into the mirror i hold my lid open with my 2nd and fourth fingers of my right hand. I have the contact nestled right on the tip of my middle fingers. Just lower your finger till it covers your iris and lift. Viola contact in.
You may have too look about and blink a few times to get it settled but it takes seconds now. Where if i tried the opticians method i'd likely be blind and driven myself mad.

I've had the same problem at the beginning...was a real horror...normally I'd end up with my eyes being red from all the tries I've had.
Anyway the tactic i used was to not put my hand on the lid skin area but on the *ends* of the lid, that way even when my lids got more wet from the tears i could still hold them when my reflex's tried to close my eyes. I didn't have those problems tho with getting them into my eye...when doctors helper (also had a hot gal hehe :) ) did it for me it got ok. just had problems when i was trying to do it myself.
Good luck tho and keep at it :) remember with the time it only gets easier :)

You get there in the end Hakera. It gets to a point where putting them in and taking them out is no more a chore than yawning and scratching your arse in a morning. Blinking when something gets near your eye is a reflex you learn to control eventually.
It gets to a point where you can put them in and take them out with one hand and without a mirror. To be fair, i've been wearing contacts for about 12 years so long experience with them accounts for the ease with which i use them.
Consider yourself lucky though, i *have* to use hard lenses because of the particular problems i have with my eyes. I can't correct my vision properly with glasses so it's contacts or blind for me!
My last word on the subject *LOOK AFTER YOUR LENSES AND YOUR EYES*
Good luck and hang tough.

I only recetly started wearing contact lenses (like in the past month or so). It's still a bit of a ordeal putting them in and out, but it's getting easier.
First time I tried it, I managed to get the lenses in (eventually) but could not get them out. Had to get the optician to remove them for me. Next day was a bit easier though. The main problem I find is if your face is even the slightest bit greasy, it's really really hard to hold your lids open.

I had a grungy old guy. Wasn't exactly fun, so I was glad when I got it on the first go.

Cosmetic lenses. Ugh.
Wear contact lenses only if you have to.
Corneal scarring is no bloody joke. It can lose you an eye.
Ponder this before you consider trying to look 'cool'
It could cost you considerably more than a few hundred dollars.

I don't wear contact lenses just to "look cool". They actually improve my vision considerably compared to glasses. Much clearer image AND a far greater field of vision. I don't have to turn my head to look around any more. --------------------------------------------------------------------

I have never had problems putting them in. I am right handed and I use my left middle finger to hold my upper eyelid up while using the middle finger of my right hand to hold the lower eyelid down while the lens is on my right index finger.
Like Captain Ruin I look directly at the lens.
I have larger than normal corneas so I use O2Optix lenses. I have them in from round 7am till midnight or 1am, staring at computer monitors all day and have never found them to be uncomfortable. But then again I was able to wear lenses without problesm for all the day from when I first got them.

Contact lenses are a very, very personal thing - some people have no problems, others have screaming nightmares.
I had no trouble at all with them, wore them many, many, MANY years ago, before all these easy, comfortable, soft ones - the ones I had were hard lenses, rigid, not so good for you eyes, but I found them easy to put in and remove etc.
Over the years I got better ones as they developed them, ending up with the simplest, easiest, most comfortable lenses imaginable - daily disposables, superb
I don't wear them any more because when I started using computers a lot I found my eyes got very dry with lenses in, so I switched to spectacles about 10 years ago. I still occasionally wear lenses, I keep a stock of daily disposables in, but only for special occasions like weddings etc.
All that said though, don't feel bad about having troubles. I am remarkably un-squeamish about these things (I'm a biologist) but I've known many, many people who found even the comfy soft lenses impossible to wear. It's just one of those things, some people are more sensitive than others.
If you don't like lenses, go for specs, they're really no bother at all.
