I like to name my ships after animals; usually in Latin or Greek. So far I've stuck with one name per ship and used Roman numerals to count how many I've lost.

I name ships that are fitted (roughly) the same with the same name, so I know which ship is what. For example, all my standard PvP fitted Wolfs are called ASCN Alpha. And my T2 fitted Tempests  are called Whispers of Wisdom

Depends entirely on what takes me at the time. My Tristan was Big Pimpin' until I got owned up in lowsec, so my next Tristan was Medium Pimpin'. My first Thorax was The Flying Johnson, until I lost it to an error message (long story). My next one was Federation Prevails, as was the one after that. My Brutix is called Brannigan's Law, which I do not pretend to understand, but merely enforce. My Condor used for quick smuggling (read: 'go-fast boat' for people who've seen the Miami Vice movie [btw you're welcome to give me a quid for each time they said go-fast boat in that damn movie]) was called Can't Touch This. My Iteron IV is called ZOMBER!!!!111, and my Gallente Shuttle is called Druadan's Gallente Shuttle, tee hee.

Asteroids, dependant on ship value.
T1 frigs tend to get veld, kernite, etc, and the different types of the rocks.
BS get Crock, Ark, etc.

Yes i know of the song,(i've seen the stones in concert 2 times, and laibach did massacre the song imo) but it also happens to be an episode title in the Cowboy Bebop series and that's what i name my ships after.

I name mine with USN / Star Trek names, with a prefix that fits my corp, for example the
"DNS Constitution B" is my ferox, with the letter denoting which ship this is in a series of ships like it, and the first ship has no letter, making this my third ferox. My ravens were the "DNS Ares A-E", when I then retired that name after losing the 7th one

except for my Butix, which are always "Jay Leno's Revenge" , for obvious reasons.
And my Tempest, which is VHI JACKED THIS RIDE , because we made someone eject and drove off in it. He later asked when he got his ship back. I do not understand that way of thinking...

I usually name my battleships after Norse Gods. And anything smaller I just grab propaganda nicknames from world war 2 soviet divisions or regiments. 
Oh ... and covert ops ships I usually name after asteroids or cargo containers, in case someone is being lazy on the scanners.

Generally my ships carry class-related names from either the IJN or Kriegsmarine, circa WWII. I also use some names from the Italian and French navies of the same era.
Some ships get funny names for ****s and grins, my fast couriers get names like "Mustang", "Palomino", etc. All of my haulers are something-maru (Kaiyo-Maru, etc).
All of my assault frigs are named after norse gods, though. I dunno why.

I've set up a complex series of names based upon fictional female characters I like, as follows:
Alia [Atreides] - Dune (Falcon)
Alita - Battle Angel Alita (Nighthawk)
Alessa [Gillespie] - Silent Hill (Raven)
Durham [Red] - 2000ad, Strontium Dogs (Cerberus)
Triela - Gunslinger Girl (Hawk)
Mara [Jade] - Star Wars (Caracal)
Molly [Millions] - Neuromancer (Crow)
Magiere - Dhampir (Kestrel)
Kirika [Yuumura] - Noir (Manticore)
Natty [Gann] - The Journey of Natty Gann (Crane)

*last one I'm not completely sure about, I keep bouncing it around. Also, you'll notice that the last names are bracketized....this is because in actuality I'm only using the first names, but that's where all the referencing is coming from.

Anyways, I tried to stick a theme with my ships somehow...
Originally I had shattered heart and wanderer... just, stuff... you'd have to know me, anyways onto our present.
Uh, if you can't find the theme, then you need to step out.
First Enyo - The Feral Feline(Lost to sniper)
Ishkur(s) - The Swarm Feline(both lost, one to a pos, the other game hiccup/tough BS rats)
Those being the past ones with names that fit the "theme".

I usually name my ships "." or "..." when traveling. When sitting in one spot, I tend to pick a local object and name my ship after it. Hence a previous poster's "Asteroid (Veldspar)" or my own favorite "Stargate <insert destination gate here>".

My very first Navitas frigate I named 'Fishy Thingy' the guy I sold it to (unrepackaged at this time) some didn't won't to stick with the name 
My Iterion is called 'Cargo on a Stick'
My first Domi was called 'Space Tuna'
and currently I'm flying the Domi 'Yuk VI' I think you can imagine, at what moment I came up with this name ...

I name them after machine/power tools. Whatever one comes to mind. "Drill Press, Centerless Grinder, Cordless Screwdriver"

Normally do a name based on what the ship looks like, followed by the number, I.E
My Caladari Manticore
Hellfire IV ... the cruise missles remind me of hellfires on fast targets.. and the number designates how many I have went through.
I.E my Typhoon is on its XI'th :(

Ships tend to get named after ex-girlfriends Be it first or last name. Then at least i don't get upset when they get blown up. :)
