Time to put my money where my mouth is and write up a canidate for a new 'War Story' forum...
The Job
The MC got word that our presence in 9UY was desired around the middle of last week. While the conflict had been going on for nearly two months by some accounts, it had reached a stalemate due to a number of reasons. Lag and node crashes had caused problems for both sides and resulted in a situation where some battles got turned on their ear. Our client wanted this war to end because, at this point, it just wasnÆt fun anymore and people wanted to move on.
Mobilization
Word went out early Thursday morning that we would be basing in Providence out of ISS Fabrica and ISS Condiso for an attack on the Pirate Coalition assets that were siegeing the UrshaÆKhanÆs UNITY station. Having just suspended operations against Namtz'aar K'in, the MC corps already had our forward bases stocked up and ready to go. Now they needed to be moved to our new area of operation.
We spent most of Thursday and Friday shifting our fleets into position and gathering updated intel on the target while opening lines of communication with ISS and UK. Several escorted freighter runs took place which moved the entire combat might of the alliance from Gelfifven to Providence in less than 48 hours.
Friday night and Saturday morning saw cyno fields popping up at regular intervals as a large wing of the MC cap ship fleet consisting of over forty carriers and dreadnaughts moved into ISS Fabrica and began preparations for the fight to come.
Initial Planning
Our scouts had confirmed information already given to us by UK and ISS as to the layout and disposition of the Pirate POSÆs. There were five Establishment POS and one owned by Coalition of Carebear Killers. UK had eight large POSÆs of their own maintaining sovereignty of the system. The war had turned into an ugly stalemate, a vicious fight that saw either side gaining an upper hand week by week only to see victory turn into disaster at the last moment.
It was our job to jump in the middle of this and force the situation to a conclusion favorable to our client no matter the cost.
We knew that the enemy had between ten and twelve carriers available in total but due to pilot availability they rarely fielded more than six or seven at a time. They also had a Nyx Mothership which we were fully prepared to engage for the opportunity to take it out of the equation if given the chance. Intel also said that the enemy could put at least ten Dreadnaughts in the field.
We worked with the leadership of ISS and UK to determine a plan of action and prepared to start the beginning of the end to this conflict on Saturday night.
But then an opportunity presented itself and we went in early...

Edited by: Seleene on 27/09/2006 16:16:55 POS Assault #1 û Planet 3, Moon 3, Saturday Afternoon
Local in 9UY was very low (less than 20 people) and we already had a decent part of our capital fleet on station and ready to go. WeÆd initially not planned to begin POS-busting operations until later that night but the opportunity to get an early hit in was too tempting. We counted on the enemy not expecting us to go this soon and while we were probably right, their response was much stronger than anticipated.
The call went out to form up and in less than 30 minutes we had about a dozen support BS, an equal number of smaller ships and a pair of ISS carriers on station in the system. Twelve MC Dreadnaughts, one UK Dread and a pair of ISS Dreads made up the attacking capital ship fleet. Three allied carriers stood by to provide fighter support to our support ships.
Not bad for half an hourÆs notice.
Our support fleet took up position outside the range of the POS guns and we jumped in our Dread then warped them to the enemy POS. The POS was a large Minmatar tower with at least six large guns and several smaller batteries. It also had at least four active shield hardeners online but the force field quickly began to crumble under the weight of the firepower weÆd brought to pound on it.
WeÆd noticed a few more enemy pilots entering the system or logging on, including Verone and one of the known Nyx pilots for the Establishment. Soon enough, our scanners had picked up the enemy fleet which seemed to consist of the Nyx and at least seven enemy carriers. It was a sobering report. Our Dreads were locked down in Siege mode and committed. MC pilots were all too well aware of the weight of firepower that many carriers could bring to bear, so we watched with trepidation as enemy frigates began warping into the POS bubbleà trailed by dozens of fighters.
The POS shields were degraded to fifty percent and, even as the enemy fighter count approached seventy, the order was given to continue. As our dreads entered another cycle of siege mode, the enemy frigates and fighters stormed out of the POS bubble, every one of them going after the Moros piloted by BDCIÆs Otto Bismarck. Now for those of you who have never seen such a sight, itÆs goddamn scary, but weÆd prepared for this. We hadnÆt anticipated such a quick and heavy response, but all we could do was follow through with our plans.
Our dreads dropped a countering force of T2 drones and our small support fleet, with all T2 guns and ammo, warped forward to begin sniping at the enemy fighters from long range. OttoÆs tank began to fail almost immediately as the fighters tore into his ship. After two minutes passed, his armor fell below 50% and continued to plummet. Things were looking bleak however the fighter cloud was beginning to thin. Our snipers reported great success but the real defense came from the Ogre IIÆs directed by our five Moros pilots. As the MorosÆ slow targeting systems finally began to get locks on the fighters, their drones cut a swath through them.
It almost wasnÆt enough as OttoÆs Moros caught fire, dipping deep into structure. Finally though, the number of fighters had been diminished to a point where his tank was able to overcome the damage being dealt. Soon, after nearly eight solid minutes of fighting, the remaining fighters were pulled back. We estimated that over half of the attacking fighters had been destroyed and the POS, that weÆd never ceased fire on, was now in reinforced mode... -

BUT. Loads of mistakes from defender side.

These things were thought about and covered to the best of our ability while they didn't happen they were planned for already. Undoubtedly we could of lost dreads this weekend, however for a number of reasons we didn't and for that i am glad.

I think you have to bear in mind that until this assault, we had never done POS warfare before. MC and ISS have significant experience over us in this area. You look back on the last battle now, there are many things we could've done differently. But at the time, with the tension and adrenaline going, you just have to try different things, see what happens and adapt.
A very nice write up Seleene, think I'll throw my own personal view of the last battle later when I get home from work ;)

Still, I agree. Anyone can look at what happened in retrospect and think of ways to have "won" or done a better job. As it was, both sides got to experience something new and different (I've never faced 100+ fighters before for damn sure) and it was a learning experience for all.

Great story, Seleene. Now I'm sad I missed it. Downloading the video now.
I must say, it's great to see the ISS mobilising the kind of military that we have been lately. We are truly in a position to protect the public assets entrusted to our safety by our shareholders. And I am thoroughly impressed with the capital fleet MC can whip up. I remember back when it was FRICK and BDCI getting paid 600m for a war campaign in battleships. How times have changed.

But for me the fights were simply awful. All I saw was a slide show followed by node drops. You got the job done for sure and I wouldn't want to take anything away from you. But in my opinion this was not the victory it should have been for you. I know for fact that had the server done its job, things would have been very very different. I do not doubt you would have still had your victory and it would have been worthy of much more praise than I am prepared to give this one. I apologise profusely if this sounds remotely like sour grapes. I assure you it is not. I am sure you know defeat as well as you know the sweetness of victory. And I hope that you would feel the same way I do about the way we lost. I am not naive and know we would in all probability not won out against the MC cap fleet. But we wanted badly to hold our heads up and go down fighting. That's why we play the game. I had an awesome 2 weeks of carnage and if felt like a kick in the balls from CCP's server for my efforts. If you doubt my sincerity when I congratulate you and your employers then speak to Count, Butter dog or Verone. I am sure they will vouch for me.

The final battle of 9UY was not initially considered the final battle for us, but as events unfolded, it became clear it would be. This last battle would be the biggest of the entire war and appropriately so for a final battle I'd say. I think everyone was anticipating a fantastic fight ahead.
The Establishment and its allies had a massive Fighter force from our Nyx and 12 other Carriers. We called for any and all frig pilots to fly the Fighters into battle. We had wanted Neutralizing battleships as well for the Cap Ships but we were unable to get any there in time.
Because our previous engagements of throwing Fighters at dreads did not seem to work very well, we had decided this time to attack the support fleet. In retrospect, the number of Fighters we had was greater than any we had to use previously, had we gone for a Dread again, we would have taken one down, I'm certain of it. Because we had lost so many Fighters to support, we went for support.
As the Dreads began their assault, their support fleet was staying some 200-300km away for the most part. While we waited for the enemy fleet to deploy itself so we could plan our counter-attack, I have to tell you, I was intimidated by the sight before me. 20+ Dreadnoughts and perhaps up to 70-80 support ships, half of them Battleships I'd say. Even though we had some 120+ Fighters to support us, all we had were Frigates to deliver them. Coupled with the fact they had their own drones and Fighters out, quite a sight. Nonetheless, I began preparing myself, battle was imminent, this was it.
Our covert pilot setup on their support and we warped our Frigate/Fighter blob to the enemy and began to engage. The lag was simply unbearable. For the first minute perhaps, it was still possible to do stuff within a reasonable amount of time, but as it went on, it became gradually worse and worse and then the node died.
People were annoyed, but we logged back on as quickly as possible. We were disorganised, but chances are the same was happening to our opponents. We tried to login and regroup for a 2nd counter-attack. Of course the node drop affected our ability to fight back far worse than it did our opponents. The Fighters that were prevously deployed had all gone inactive, strewn across the system lost or returned to the POS of their respective Carriers.
We had enough fighters to launch for the 2nd counter-attack, and after 5-10 mins of everyone logging in piecemeal we warped back to the POS shield and built up our force again. We did not have as many Fighters this time, no-where near enough to kill a Dreadnought. At this point, Rawthorm decided now was the perfect time to give me command of the fleet as he had no visual contact with the enemy. I must admit I felt like some poor animal frozen in fear from a car's headlights.
Somewhat disoriented and unsure of what to do I looked to the screen to see the state of the enemy fleet. Their support fleet had warped back in to its previous position, where lots of cans were floating. This would save us having to setup on them through a covert, so I ordered our force to warp to the can nearst the enemy fleet and began engaging again. Again the lag struck, and this time my interceptor was not so fortunate to survive. The lag though, meant that despite being blown up, according to my screen, my ship was on fire, with very few modules left, orbiting its previous target... then the node died again.

Edited by: Ange1 on 27/09/2006 19:02:58 At this point, people got stressed. Having lived with this for almost 3 weeks now, we were just getting fed up with it. As we all logged back in again, we wanted to try to attack again, but we had simply run out of Fighters. Again the node drop disabled all availiable Fighters and our Carrier group simply had nothing left of significance to deploy and half our Frigates were dead. It was at that point we knew we were defeated. None of us were really willing to go through another few days of this, just to lose dozens of Fighters, ships and our time to node deaths that simply screwed the battle up to anyones favour depending on the circumstances.
And so thats my personal perspective of things from the Final Battle of 9UY. Hope you enjoy the read

Excellent post, m8.
Dude, I actually understand exactly what you mean. A lot of us have sat around the past few days thinking the same things. If it were possible to replay the entire thing in a lag-free environment, I would do it in a heartbeat. I've little doubt that had the servers been up to it that I have still been taking screenshots tonight of yet another slugfest with you guys. A hard-won victory is always much sweeter. Not that this was easy! LOL!
Still, I get what you mean. You wanted to make us really pay for it and TBH, I'd have gladly traded a few cap ship losses for the ability to play out something of this scale the way it should be. It's just imaginary money and I'd have loved the chance to hop into a frigate myself and dive bomb one of your cap ships as well!
I'd wish you luck, but then I'd be condemning some poor bastard to a merciless podding by your evil pirate ways.

Edited by: Izo Azlion on 27/09/2006 19:13:10 Thanks for the kind words Seleene. Nice, efficient work from you guys.
Very nice post, too.
To be honest, and on a personal note. POS wars are not my thing. I've now been in a BS fleets as part of ASCN and camped gates, and I've been up close and personal tackling frigs at 1FPS... And I dont enjoy it.
Low sec Piracy and the future entice me so much more, but I would not go without the war in 9UY, its been an experiance and its been an honour to fight. I believe we made history anyway, as the first Pirates to properly challenge, and actually stand a damn good chance, of taking an outpost.
Again, its a pleasure. The community make EVE what it is, and its the major stuff that changes the course of things.
I'm proud to be Veto, proud to be playing EVE. I think we all are, huh?
Cheers!
Izo Azlion.

Seeing all Dreads, hostile support and our fighters was just awesome. But it was quite clear that the pos would go down at this stage, Im not really sure if we had enough frigs pilots in the end to use all our fighters but our backup pilot was at least no where to be found. Thats pretty much the answer to way there was no "cap killing" squad and that it would have died really quick to their support fleet.
Originally by: Seleene The node crashed. It was strange. Lag was bad, but not unmanageable.
Im not sure how they other frig pilots in our gang had I but I was able to lock and active my fighters and scrambler on 2 Battleships in the whole final fight at p3 m7. Only good part about it was that I got my armor repaired after both node crashes.

Nice post, boss.
I was there for the second siege, and it was a blast. Lag is a fickle wench - I ended up having little lag on my part. It was very cool to see 100+ fighters suddenly warp in on us in a crescent of unbroken fighters across half the POS shields, then watch them gradually start deploying. I was on max zoom, though, so maybe that helped. It was great fun just trying to lock the max number of fighters and slowly seeing their numbers dwindle or 25 sec locks just stop as fighters popped right and left. The frenzy of fighters, frigs, drones, and support ships all flitting about the dreads while they hammered away on the POS was like a sci fi movie and was definitely a great window into the potential of the game, though it seems I was hogging the node to get that view.
That was about the most enjoyable POS campaign I've been involved with. Unfortunately, 95% of them are not that exciting - props to the EST bunch for going all-in on the campaign. And a proud fist raised for my former brethren for standing tall. Now if everyone would leave you and CVA alone, you guys could have it out old-school style and really have some fun!

Still, I agree. Anyone can look at what happened in retrospect and think of ways to have "won" or done a better job. As it was, both sides got to experience something new and different (I've never faced 100+ fighters before for damn sure) and it was a learning experience for all.
TBH there's a difference between throwing ships at a node and preparing for a "true" fight. Not being a ****, but just trying to throw in some perspective.
The fighting in 9uy was a welcomed change at first, but at the end of the day left a dirty taste in my mouth. Nothing is more frustrating than seeing the target, wanting to kill the target, having the ability to kill said target, but are ultimatly unable to kill the target for reasons beyond your control.

I had lots of fun :)
I have to say.. If anyone takes anything from this war it will be the combat experience. There has never been a war where so many carriers and fighters were sent into the fray. I for one know exactly how I'll be fighting fleet carrier battles from now on :) As per that Tyhpoon he spoke of - that was me. Some lucky bugger has 3 of the 8 faction smartbombs I had fit. I didnt survive long - I was one of the first targets of their fighter fleet :( but I'll be damned if I didnt put a giant hole in their line of death that was cutting our support apart.
If anyone was watching that big ball of exploding orange^ that was me going down in a fit of glory. I lost a fortune in that phoon =[
Good fights to everyone - and please.. no more wars of this size in a single system. Lag combat is lame. Invade many systems or something :p

Nice well written post seleene.
Wish i had time to muster somthing like that up.
With regards to sunday night as i wasnt around saturday nigth for fights. I am sure and im sure many others will aggree that if the node had stayed stable and not crashed AT ALL on sunday night then not only would more fun of been had by all but the way things were going im pretty sure your support fleet would of been decimated.
Then who knows
Really annoyed me that we both sides had to suffer the crashes. After the first crash i for 1 was pretty sure it was game over for our defense as our fleet relyed heavily on fighter support and the reassigning and not getting people back in quick enough was just a nightmare.
Lagg as been stated was certainly not as bad as it has been in many fleet battles before, was still evident but not horrendous, 10-20 sec module activation for me.

Thug, yes and no. Your points are correct, but there's reasons for it.
In the first engagements, we didn't have enough fighters to kill properly tanked dread alone. In the last engagement we did. We had ~150 fighters assigned then. This would have killed dreads alone.
But: They had 23 dreads. We had 6 towers to defend. If we had gone for the dreads right away, they would have killed off so many of our fighters that we would have ran out of them and then have nothing left to defend the other 5 towers with. We decided to go for their support instead of going for ~2 dread kills.
Yes, there was no cap-killing squad around. Yes, it's easy to warp in your own battleships on the other side of the POS out of their BS's range. But: 1. We lacked numbers, badly. We had ~60 in gang when the POS came out of reinforced. That includes covert ops, some hauler, etc. Many were also alts of cap ship pilots. 2. The attackers had a load of carriers with fighter assigned to frigates as well, which they could land on our BSs (if we'd have had any). 3. I was there in my BS, sitting inside the POS in Loxy's movie. I'd been out there shooting their Dreads, which might very possibly have provided enough damage to kill that dread which made it with heavy structure damage. If it wasn't for my FPS. Or, actually, I didn't have any FPS. I had about one frame per minute and was totally unable to do anything at all. :(
Am I forced to have any regret? I've become the lie, beautiful and free In my righteous own mind I adore and preach the insanity you gave to me |

Expression Of Admiration Of Excellent Story
Seleene,
Despite your unconventional lifestyle choices and your willingness to shoot young adventurers in Ibises, I nonetheless would like to neutrally congratulate yourself, the MC, and the other "allies" on a successful campaign.
I would also like to thank Verone for ransoming my pod...
I had the great pleasure of witnessing parts of the events in 9UY, and of joining you and the heroic MC pilots, while you viciously assaulted one of those POS'es.
The story at the beginning of this thread was extremely well written, full of drama, and had me totally gripped from start to finish.
Your proposal of a War Stories section is a noble one, and I hope it becomes implemented.

Edited by: Coug on 28/09/2006 02:28:51 Having a fast computer and fast connection isn't always beneficial I found out Great write up Sel.
The only thing worth while to add from my perspective was a mini battle (David and Goliath style) I had with a Vigil on the first node drop. When I loaded back in, I was taking tons of damage even though it looked like I was in a safe spot with nothing around me, so I had to punch siege and rep and hope I was in a good spot, else I was gonna die.
After the POS finally loaded, I was alone with space debris. Friendly drones, enemy fighters, enemy cans, friendly cans, and a big POS filling me full of lead. After a few, a Vigil came up and started buzzing around me, the first though filling my head, "oh hell, if they get fighters on me, I'm going to be in trouble". Buzz, buzz, buzz this little Vigil orbited me, bumping me while I tried to lock him up. I can only imagine he had to have been begging for fighters.
I had lost half my drones in the node crash, but I deployed the remaining ones I had almost as soon as the Vigil started orbiting me, which probably explains why he didn't react immediately when my drones started attacking him when I got a lock. The Vigil quickly hit armor and flew straight downwards away from me (Come back little friggy!!), finally able to out run my drones at less than half structure. I laughingly smiled as I recalled my drones to deal with the next frigate, but soon enough I had a Moros drop into siege next to me and the immediate danger was lifted.
When I logged in first after the second node crash, I knew that Lady Luck had spent all she had on me and I was going down this time, and while the module lag was much worse this time around, I managed to take less than 1% Structure damage out of the ordeal.
I was there for the 3 fights, and was glad to have participated in a POS take down that wasn't boring. I tell you what though, there was tons of people who were frantickly changing their semi-gank Dread setups to OMGTANK setups between Sat morning and Sat evening

Nice write up. After all these weeks of fighting my video card burned out so I missed the last weekend of the war.
I was in some of the earlier POS attacks / defences and I have to say they were epic. Tearing round all those cap ships in a Rifter with a wing of fighters behind you is great (I'm a die hard frigate freak). Lag aside I can happily say it was like being in the first 10 minutes of Star Wars - Revenge of the Sith.
It wasn't all POS assaults though. I remember spending a very fun Friday night in my jag while the enemy heavily camped Unity. They had way more firepower than we had online.
Thinking like guerrilla fighters we got a covops on Unity and monitored the camp while the rest of us moved our frigates between POSs so their covops wouldn't know when we were warping in to attack. We had been caught out by the Nyx and it's combat jumps a few times so we opted for light hit and run rather than a stand up slug fest. As luck would have it they had battleships setting up in sniper points around the station while their 'dictor was maintaining a bubble outside the docking bay (not logging inside Unity 4TW).
Our covops got in position and we swarmed one of the snipers. As soon as he popped we warped out in every direction and waited for another opportunity. Not long after we got fighter support so I parked the jag and jumped in a Rifter since it was now the fighters doing the real work. Glad I did because after we took out the forth BS of the night the enemy started to bunch. We should have seen it coming but we were having fun and we got a bit brazen.
Sure enough we swarmed a domi only to find we had run into a wall of smartbombs. I was lagged to hell and back but I doubt it changed the outcome. Next thing I know I'm in a clone bay. That was the first time I had ever been podded. I finally popped my egg. I only had cheap implants so it didn't phase me at all but it ended a pretty mad run of luck at getting my pod out.
I clone jumped back to Unity and decided to have a go at the lone inty I was told was outside. I should have taken the Jag instead of the Rifter but I was drunk and didn't want to risk it. I got into his armour before I popped and then lost a second pod to that blasted 'dictor sphere outside the station.
I flew back down in my 2nd clone and parked it for the night. It may not sound like much but that was just one night out of a couple of months of steadiliy escalating war.
It was a lot of fun. I'm sure CCP are analysing the server data from all this right no to try and make this kind of warfare possible without so many drops. This is the stuff that puts Eve above and beyond any game I have ever seen.
Thanks to all involved.

A very detailed and fair write up seleene!
I must say when we heard MC was definitely going to join the fray, jokes about good loot was our first reaction More targets!
The battles themselves were accurately described. From my perspective it was - "get in, fight, try to stay alive" - not for yourself, but so fighters can be assigned to you!
As I ran out of interceptors and my own frigates, I was issued suicide frigates that had been purposefully fitted for one purpose...
We resisted with tenacity, however our enemy won this battle deservedly.
There was no escape during combat days, when I checked, all exit routes were well guarded by MC/ISS/UK groups to insure we could not resupply. The battles you brought were great fun and have left me with a good impression of my enemies, other than the one on my pod that survived the last battle.

Awesome account from Seleene and Ange1, I take my hat off to the defenders, you were heavily outnumbered and still put up a great fight. Its the biggest Op I'ved been involved in, the support gang was huge on our side 70-80 ships, you fought pretty much how I would of done of it with what you had there, we thought you'd go for the Support this time (admits to some concern when all those fighters appeared around my BS). Shame for all about the 2 node crashes especially with how many fighters were involved, was a nightmare getting back into game and re-assigning everything. One of my main memories from it was trying to lock Wizards damn inty every time it came out of the pos bubble. Still while it lasted it was extremely tense and exciting, respect to all involved.

Well, that is just a great write up. Nice one.
I can't say I enjoyed the conflict myself, leading 80-strong gangs in 12 hour stretches is draining, and POS wars are mostly dull. But it was certainly memorable.
Congratulations to MC on a job well done, and of course for UK/ISS on a battle well fought. -------- On vacation from ISSN |

Great write up from both sides, never thought i'd find myself sympathising with the plight of the Establishment, but hey to lose like that really sux, fingers crossed on CCP getting it sorted for the future.

Nice read, and having participated in the POS 'stress test' today, all I have to say is I feel your pain
Though hopefully there is light at the end of the tunnel, todays testing should help. ----------

Those pics were taken on an alt flying a Revelation. Or did you think I had lasers mounted on my Moros? His drone skills are still getting up there.
Thanks to everyone who has left a comment on this post. In a way, I find this to be more fun (and certianly less taxing) than making videos. It's certianly motivation to try to do more reports like this in the future. I hope Eddz and others keep it up. -

The write up is amazing, and you can see that its clearly appreciated by everyone here other than you. If you don't like 'stories' don't attempt to read them, stick to picture books or whatever is more at your IQ level.
