Well...there has been numerous threads on this forum stating that several patches ago, Eve started to randomly crash to desktop for quite a few players. So far there has not been (as far as I can tell) any Dev response, or updating of known issues regarding this. From my own reading and following threads related to this issue, a vast majority of common system traits include AMD dual core processors. While some reports have also been centered around Intel dual core processors. While some cases can be attributed to specific player's system flaws or problems...the sample size we have clearly indicates a real problem with the Eve Client.
I think its time for some sort of Dev input here, in the form of a blog or comment here on this thread. Reading some of the Tech Support suggestions given by GMs to players is laughable. Reseating memory, video cards, playing with sound off...all have not worked. My guess is that the GMs have to give some sort of advise, as it is their job. However, I think the problem is generally accepted that somewhere along the patching process CCP introduced some sort of memory leak or video glitch to crash the client.
What I would like to see is for players to simply "/sign" this thread and add their system specs they play EVE on. Many bug reports and logfiles have already been uploaded on this issue. Now is the time for some feedback from the Devs if at all possible.
Problem: Seemingly random crash to desktop when using gates, stations, or any other "session change". Rarely, if ever, happens when just sitting in station.
Sys Specs: AMD 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0 Gig Processor ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard Corsair XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 433 RAM eVGA GeForce 7800GTX 256mb Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10k RPM SATA150 HD Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 Sound Card Plextor Slot Load 16x DVD-R Enermax Liberty 620W Power Supply
No other games have this problem. No system memory leaks, and all chipset and other drivers, patches, and AMD optimizer installed.

Edited by: Grez on 09/10/2006 21:48:57 The issue was server side and it was fixed a few patches ago. The last CTD's are normaly because of incorrectly setup systems, or a non-supported OS. Clear your cache, install all the Windows XP updates, and disable ingame sound. ---

Yup you sound just like a GM (please no offense to you) :)
I have done all that...same problem with CTDs. This is not a system problem I can almost promise you. I am glad your CTDs seem to have been "fixed". Could you link to where you got the information where clientside CTDs were fixed? Thanks.

It was in one of the posts, also the sticky was taken down in this very forum section, meaning it's most probably fixed. Also I was one of the few suffering from them, and they stopped randomly, just like they randomly started. It was a server side error, and they fixed it.
Almost 100% of the CTD's in EVE are due to system related errors. You might think you've tried everything, chances are you havn't. Have you tried tweaking driver options? Deleting your entire cache? Playing in windowed mode only, fullscreen only? Lower resolution? Higher resolution? Underclocking your GFX card / CPU? ---

I also run a AMD 64 X2 3800+ and I have only been playing for a few weeks, and have had consistent crashes to the desktop when I try to undock, or use a stargate.
I'm running a very fresh install of XP all patched up, with the latest Nvidia drivers for my 6800gs.
I have just tried EVE Launcher and sadly have the same problem. I do know that there is some flakyness with XP, and some software with the AMD x2's.
For instance, you can take a look at the tech support posts and fix methods for Everquest 2, which has almost the same crash problems. They recommend installing a patch from AMD to address this issue, and mention turning off 'cool n' quiet' operation in the BIOS, lastly there is a REG adjustment you can make to try and solve the issue.
I have no desire to play this game without sound as that wouldn't be any fun at all. Nor will I consider underclocking my CPU, or Video card..
However I'm still hopeful I might find a workaround for this. I'll poke around teh internets and see if I can't find out some other possible fixes, or ideas So far the basic things like clearing the cache, and windowed mode haven't helped. I'm only running at 1280x1024, id hate to drop down to 1024x768, but I guess I'll give that a try..
If anyone had any other specific idea, or links to any info on this please post em up!

Whatever is causing these problems, it's not the processor. I run a dual-core AMD system (X2 4600, Asus A8N SLI-SE, 2GB DDR400) with XP SP2 and the MS/AMD patches, and Eve works just fine. I can't even remember the last time I had a CTD. |

If you have a creative card and do not want to, then I suggest you get used to the crashing. Creative drivers are rubbish, and 90% of crash cases where a creative card was involved, said creative card caused the crash. ---

Yeah, I guess I was being a bit cranky about the problem last night.
I never ment that I wouldn't 'try' disableing the device as a test to see if that helps. ;)
I did continue to do some digging, and I after some driver tweaking, and a very odd thing a refresh rate change, it appears to be stable so far. :)

No problems here on any of the systems I have run eve on
1st, new system, 4 days old and used eve to stress test it with dual clients for 10h
Windows XP32 with all patches (including 1 unreleased one for dual core fix) AMD AM2 x2 4200 (overclocked to 2.6GHz or x2 5000 speed) 1GB dual channel Corsair DDR2 PC6400 5-5-5-12 (2GB pack on order) ATi x1900GT 256MB Onboard SoundMax Soundcard 500GB Seagate 7200.10 SATAII HDD 500GB Seagate 7200.10 IDE HDD
Needed to install windows dual core fix (not available from microsoft without paying, look in "increase framerate" thread for the free one) and the 2 dual core drivers on AMD's site. Playing with sound on currently.
2nd, old laptop
XP32 & XP64 with all patches AMD64m 3000 1GB PC2700 DDR ATi 9600m 64M AC97 VIA sound chip 60GB 7200 HDD
No problems, rock solid. Play with sound off as it lags the graphics. Sound on though works fine using newest sound driver.
System 3
XP32 with patches AMD XP3000 o/c to XP3200 speed using pin mod 1GB DDR2400 2-2-2 timings ATi 9700AIW 185GB HDD (old IBM) nVidia nForce 2 soundchip
Rock solid as well. Play with sound off here as no speakers on system, has worked fine with sound before though.
All except the notebook are running the newest 6.9 ATi cat drivers (notebook is stuck at v6.4), newest motherboard / chipset drivers (from chipset manufacture not board maker) and newest sound drivers.
Note a lack of creative sound cards, I had crashing problems with them for a long time, finally gave up on them and feel much better for it. I now have an external and PCI AWE32 sat in a draw, not going to sell them as I like keeping friends. ----
God gave us a brain, he also gave us a voice.
Shame some people have yet to connect them.

This is just not true. There are still lots of us with this problem, and no the issue has not been fixed. My system was as solid as a rock before the last patch, since then I can't do four jumps in an empty system without a CTD. Yes we have tried clearing our cache, disabling sound, updating our drivers, and none of these have worked. But to be honest we shouldn't have to disable sound to play the game. We shouldn't have to go delving into our registry to tweak OpenGL settings just to make the client stable.
There are four pages of comments here and it seems that the majority of us with the problem are running dual-core processors. There are numerous fixes to try, some of which have helped certain people and not others. Yes it is a problem with our hardware, but please don't tell us the EVE client isn't also involved because let me reiterate...I have only started getting this problem since the last patch.
We have yet to have a dev response to this. It would be nice to know that they are at least looking into reproducing and debugging this issue.
Whilst I applaude the OP for trying to give this issue a boost, perhaps we should keep all these comments in the original thread...I have already tried to get people to post their system specs there. I don't know...just a thought.

My roommate had issues with a AMD dual core CPU. He had many of the same system specs of the OP AMD X2 4000+ ASUS A8N32-SLI Motherboard 2 gigs of Corsair memory gforce card that I dont know right now, high end..
I looked into why his system was crashing and found two sources of posable problems.
The Asus board shorts out easly make sure to use stand offs WITH a cardboard offsets.
Second his system was rather warm. It was not frying but was at the edge of where I like to keep my systems. So I water cooled his system this got the heat of the CPU and the GPU outside the system his system now runs at about 3 to 5 over room temp.
These 2 things got his system stable and he was able to run EVE and even boosted his FPS in other games.
Its not the eve client, its your system.

I've had a lot of problems for a while which I resolved successfully by applying correct drivers to sketchy setup and some hardware incompatibilities.
Here's my setup
ASUS A8N-Sli Deluxe AMD X2 3800+ (S939) 2 gig ram Sapphire Radeon X700 Pro
The A8N SLI Motherboard has a nvidia nforce chipset which gives some issues with the ATI Card in the x series.
It would randomly crash in this game only and I had an issue with playing in windowed mode as I do so often as I have dual monitor and like multitasking.
SOLUTION --------
My issue was solved by installing all the most up to date drivers for the nForce chipset for my motherboard and downloading a special release of the graphics drivers from the forums on the ATI website. (not found in the downloads section as it was not an official driver). The driver is specifc for x series. They were saying over x1000 but my x700 pro was suffering from the same issue. its for 64bit processors (even un 32bit mode) and the nforce chipset on the motherboard.
To install the drivers I had to use ATI's uninstall utility. They have a special one to delete everything.
Reboot
Install all the nvidia chipset drivers
reboot
Install the special ATI Drivers
reboot
come back and should work after that.
Once I had done all of this, I did not experience a single crash in the past month and a half.

so wait we have to play without using game features? we need to try to stunt our systems to possibly make this game work? i use a bone stock(read untweaked not overclocked) system with fairly powerful video card and a nice processor. i try the newest, older, and MS recommended drivers. all you can say i need to SLOW it down BELOW manufacturer specifications? change settings we shouldnt have to and arent always recommended by the manufacturer?

for me, these problems all happen on Clean OS installs and clean EVE installs again with newest release drivers etc. you think we dont try everything but many have probably spent money on fixing these problems they shouldnt have to.
for months we sat and listened to recommendations.. disable sound this, reseat that, try and try and try. i can tell you this i have 3 seperate systems with many options for component choices and my only stable system in THIS GAME is my oldest system. i then tried to do their recommendations and send error and debugging files only to find the reporting site is down after 45 minutes of writing and attaching files
i believe it is incompatabilities with newer chipsets and equipment. and with a trend that is not just a handful of players, we cannot all be at fault!

Well said!! The "disable your sound fix" has been around for as long as I've been playing the game (over two years now) and quite frankly I think that it is disgusting that this is still being put around as an official fix to some CTD issues. I work as a developer for a company that supplies geological data aquisition and visualisation software for the oil industry. Companies like Shell, BP and Total all use our software, and this so-called fix would be like us telling them that they can't use our visualisation software with the monitor turned-on!! Sound is all part of the immersive quality of games and I like to play with it on, and should be able to. Why hasn't this been looked into and fixed?
Now, please don't get me wrong, I am fully aware that developing games is an order of magnitude more complex than writing data collection and visualisation software, and I am full of admiration for CCP as to the quality of gaming they provide us, but the process of reproducing problems and debugging code will be identical. They should have built and AMD and an Intel dual-core cpu machine and should be trying to reproduce the problem. This is what we had to do when one of our customers couldn't run our data server on a Citrix system. And perhaps equally as important, they should tell us, their paying customers, that this is being done....one line in these forums would be all it would take to reassure us.

If that where the case this motherboard I'm using now wouldn't work, but it does. All that above would do is pinpoint where the issue is located. Underclocking the GFX card would make us realise that it's an issue with your graphics card - see where I'm coming from?

Sure, I realise it's a very complex problem that has many variables. But the current CTD problem doesn't appear to be related to soundcard drivers. I was running on-board Realtek sound when this problem started. Disabled sound, no change. Tried Creative card, no change. And to keep getting told to disable sound to make the problem go away is just getting a bit frustrating (no disrespect, I know you're only trying to help ) My system was stable before the last patch....the only thing that changed was the EVE client, so please don't tell me it's something to do with my system set-up...no logic on earth can come to that conclusion!!
But to be honest, Creative are probably the biggest supplier of peoples PCI soundcards and as such CCP really should be working with them to work out why their game doesn't work with Creative cards. Other games don't suffer from this problem, so it's not a generic problem with the drivers but an issue in the EVE client code and how it interfaces with the creative drivers....it's not Creatives job to change that

This is frankly nonsense. We are not talking about random crashes and lockups which you would expect in all games not just Eve. We are talking about specific repeatable problem on Jumping and Undocking.
1. My system is completely stable in all other games and software. 2. My system is not hot. 3. I am using all the latest drivers. 4. I have proven it is not the "disable audio" excuse. 5. I have ruled out power saving options.
and last but not least.
6. THIS PROBLEM ONLY STARTED AFTER THE LAST CLIENT PATCH.

I should point out that just because a problem is specific to one game and can be reproduced doesn't mean it's not an issue with your system being unstable.
Many moons ago I ran a creaky old 1GHz Duron system. It worked fine with every single application and game I had - except one. 3DMark 2001 would always freeze up at one specific point in the dragon test. It always locked on exactly the same frame.
I changed drivers, swapped in new memory, bought a new PSU, flashed in the latest BIOS, installed a new heatsink, etc. It still froze up. Then I underclocked the processor to 950MHz. Bingo. Problem solved.
I'm not saying this is what's happening here, but it's very easy to blame the software when it can actually be a case of your hardware taking a trip to the twilight zone. |

Hi guys. I am having random crashes as well, despite using slipstreamed Windows XP installation, with the latest RyanVM integrator.
I have an AthlonXP-32bit processor. It has never hanged with EVE, except when the dragon code branch appeared, which caused me to crash randomly.
So using the abovementioned windowsXP method, I reinstalled my OS, and installed EVE from scratch, without altering anything / adding the previous folder settings. Although the amount of crashes seemed to have reduced, its still happenning. Later, using older Forceware drivers, 84.21, from March 2006, it further reduces my random crashes, drastically.
System specs: AthlonXP 11 x 200mhz tbred A, MSI5700 256mb, 1gig single channel ram, Asus a7n8x-Deluxe mboard.
Note: My p4 630 system, freshly formatted and reinstalled with EVE(only)suffers lesser crashes, when i used the older graphics drivers as well. apparrently, the newest forceware drivers ain;t too compatible with EVE. It has a 128mb ti4400 in it.
Hope my observations help. |

The problem is centered around session changes in the game. My system only has games installed on it. I dont even surf websites with this box...only games, OS, drivers.
@Grez: I used to work at Creative Labs tech support (N.A. center is in Stillwater Oklahoma where I went to college). I can assure you this is not a sound related issue...for the simple fact that the client crashes without the soundcard present, and BIOS onboard soundcard disabled. The OS doesnt even see a sound device when it crashes...hence, no soundcard driver issue on this one. I do thank you for your help, and I know you are trying to help...but I am not a newb that doesnt know how to troubleshoot my box. This is another reason my OP is worded the way it is.
The issue might be centered around ASUS as I am seeing a lot of ASUS systems in various threads with this problem.

Regardless, Creatives sound cards do cause issues in the EVE client, causing it to crash, and sometimes a hard BSOD, hence it's best to try and get rid of that possibility first. ---

No one should have to disable sound. CCP doesnt have a list of known hardware problems with their game anywhere. Besides, I believe this CTD issue is revolving around system memory addressing and how the game client accesses it (just an opinion).
I believe the disable sound is quite an urban legend at this point in the development of Eve...but it will increase your framerates.

The bottom line is that something CCP introduced in the last patch has made EVE completely unplayable for a smallish, but growing, number of us. Yes, it may be something horrible in low-level code that interacts with CPU/graphics/sound subsystems, but it's something they have introduced. It's not something we have done to our PCs, because our systems were running EVE just fine before the last patch. As paying customers we are therefore justified in coming on here and asking for some response from CCP...this is the only "forum" we have.

Right im not going to waste my time putting rig specs in here, we all know that EVE the AMD 64 bit Dual Core CPUs had issues, and thankfully they were fixed. Hussahhh
After being fully patched up and antivirused up and all that other admin stuff for many months, in the past few days to my surprise - i too have had CTD issues, and OS lockups where the game is frozen, and background apps (like Teamspeak) all work ok.. time to hit reset button as nothing else works
Situation is this - theres probably been new code released which has issues... AMD dual cores are sensitive to the RAM and buffering (even when NOT overclocked)... so the problem stems from lag and memory... ie - memory leak / continually dropped packets...
please please provide native dual core support, theres only so many plasters you can apply to 'old' coding...
Bring on Kali I.

Do you not listen, I was explaining why I told you to disable sound, jesus, read for once, would you? Maybe YOU have tried disabling sound, but new posters to the thread might not have, hence my reason for posting it.
I myself have two dual core systems and they work perfectly with EVE, try messing with your afinity and memory settings. And like I've said plenty of times, CCP don't post here, this is for workarounds fromt he community - demanding a reply will get you no-where. Post them a bug report with crash logs, and then sit and wait, like everyone else. ---

yes grez, your advice for a "fix" is the number 1 BS response for any type of problem in the game, sound and cache will come up in nearly any problem thread. i think we can say it isnt the only possible cause..
throttling back our video cards.. so you're saying that its possible all 3 of my PCI-E video cards (2 nvidia 1 ati). may be the issue? and all the people who state this is the only game they have issue with need to adjust hardware that is working correctly elsewhere? of all the games i play this is the only one i have issues with.
and since your not having these issues how can you be offering advice? and arguing that your idea is the cause of soo many . try not adding your disable sound clear cashe two cents to each thread you happen accross perhaps?
as to my theory about newer chipsets: most people using the dual core a64's will be using the most popular chipset being nforce 4 based. of my 3 computers 2 are nforce 4, 1 is nforce 2. and it doesnt matter which processor i use, my dual core or single core a64, they are unstable. while my nforce2 based board being older is still stable. and if you read people's system stats, no matter what manufacturer, most of the boards are nforce 4 based. so im begining to think it might also be an incompatibility with these chipsets, or the drivers. while not everyone using these chipsets are all experiencing the same problem until someone with data on these crashes can compile and research this data and find the trends that lead to this issue, we may never know what is the cause. since ccp undoubtedly recieves the most information on the crashes of its own game using its own logging tools and the games crash file we kinda have to rely upon them to sort it out. it may very well turn out to be a driver issue, hardware incompatability, or software issue. but until someone figures this out..............
my systems: system 1 (unstable) a64 x2 3800+, asus a8n-sli deluxe, 2x evga 7900gt, 2x 512 cruicial balistix pc4000 ( at 400mhz), audigy 2 zs, 200 gig seagate sata, windows xp sp2
system 2 (unstable) a64 3200+, asus a8n-e, asus eax 800xl, 2x512 kingston pc3200, onboard sound, 200 gig seagate sata, windows xp sp2
system 3 (stable) athlon xp 3000+ (400mhz fsb), asus a7n8x-e, sapphire radeon 9800pro, 512 corsair pc3200, onboard sound, 40gb hitachi ide HD, windows xp sp2
i have memtested all the ram, swapped video cards tried 4 different power supplies, relaxed memory timings, boosted memory voltage, adjusted countless bios settings. in all these system and mix of any of the parts possible i have tried many builds in attempts to find a hardware problem, ive tried with no sound (including no sound device installed on the pc) so we can say that is bunk.
like i said i think from a little experience and many hours of troubleshooting that ive personally tried. i can discount the whole sound/cache issue as a possible cause of my CTD issues. today ive once again sent 3 CTD dump files in bug reports.. of course with their disclaimer that no further contact will occur on these reports we have no clue as to whether or not they will even read them.
they have made only 1 real reference about the existence of this problem, asking for bug reports.. and that was a few builds ago. so now we wait for some official word from CCP. and now we wait some more..

if u have ctd then check ur memory, some module can be broken, even brand name. dual chanel also can cause many problems. if u have overclocked ur system then just pray . i can say only one, there is NO problem whith dual core and eve client.

Thanks for pitching in FurbySlayer....I was almost losing the will to live Interesting finds regarding the fact that it may be the chipset rather than the dual core cpu that may be the culprit. However, there are several people complaining about Intel dual core based systems also. And strangely many people are running dual core systems without issues
Thanks for the input l3VGV....I think you must be one of the lucky majority with a dual-core system that is working. I think most of us have looked at our RAM. I for one bought a new 1GB stick and removed my two 512MB sticks that I was runnning in dual-channel mode, and it made no difference at all. Also, if you have bad memory surely you would notice other games and apps failing as well, and at worse the PC would fail to boot. Most people have stated that it's only EVE that is having problems. And if FurbySlayer is correct and that it's a chipset issue then its a fact that not all motherboards are made equal. Chips are made in batches and motherboard manufacturers will change the revisions of chips and PCBs they use like they change their socks. I have the Platinum edition of the Neo4 and the same CPU as you, yet I get constant CTD and you can run EVE just fine.
As FurbySlayer says, I guess we can only do our bit by throwing in the crash dumps and logs in the hope that CCP find a generic problem that gets fixed with Kali.

no my board is not SLI. if there msi neo have troubles i dont kno what to think in my corp not only me using x2, and there all fine
if u ready to lose warenty then upgrade bios(litle chance it will fix some rare bug)
my drivers ar 6.09 for video and 6.86_nforce_win2kxp_international_whql for mainboard. dx version is 9.0c August 2006. hope it will help.
also to test ur dual core drivers u can run that program: Linkage
it must show 'ur system is perfect', otherway u have trubles with core syncronization(drivers is needed to fix it).

Can you be specific about your board type. Msi K8N Neo is an nForce 3 not Nforce 4. K8n Neo4 is nforce 4 SLI. So maybe your board is nforce 3 and the culprit is the nforce4 chipset ?

My Athlon X2 system has an NF4 SLI board and it's completely stable with Eve.
I've been checking the differences between that system and one that's unstable and found a change in the Eve setup, but I don't know if it's relevant.
Can somebody with an unstable system add the line advancedDevice=1 to their prefs.ini file and then load Eve and in the graphics section of the preferences window change the 'present interval' setting to interval one. Also try this in window mode as well as full screen. |

Back when I first started playing eve I was having crashes to the desktop and blue screens at least once a night. Thought it must have been a driver issue of somekind. Tried reinstalling the sound card drivers, uninstalling, installing again, etc... finally took the sound card out and everything worked fine. Couple months later after numerous patches tried the card again, nope same thing. Went so far as to rebuild my entire machine and only installed the Eve client. Same problem. So I have finally just given up to the fact that my machine setup with the Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS and Eve don't get along. Here are my specs:
Sys Specs: AMD 64 X2 4800 ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard Corsair XMS Pro 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR 433 RAM eVGA GeForce 7800GTX 512mb (2)Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10k RPM SATA150 HD (RAID 0) Creative Audigy 2 ZS
By the way since I physically removed the card the number of desktop crashes is down to maybe once every couple weeks and that is normally server related. Haven't had a blue screen since.

I have only recently been getting CTD. Whenever I undock from Youl station it happens. I have been all over the universe since it started happening and have only CTD once while comming out of a gate, but it is consistent outside of Youl station.
My specs: MB: GA-M59SLI-S5 AM2 Nvidia nforce 590sli CPU: AMD 64x2 4600+ Windsor Ram: Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800, total 4 gb on 4 sticks Video: BFG 7600 GT OC 256mb x2, though my system runs hot when I run em in sli mode so I dont (need to get better cooling me thinks) Sound: Creative SB X-Fi Platinum 7.1 Power: BFG 650 watt HD: WD Caviar SE16 500 GB 7200rpm DVDrom: Samsung DVD Writer Lightscribe
Only measures I've taken. Shortly after it started I uninstalled eve, reinstalled OS (XP pro with SP2), updated drivers, reinstalled eve and it still CTD.
My old system had no probs with eve, and neither did my new one until about a week ago.

i guess the only other thing we can do (as a community) is to gather more info.. i know others have posted threads to this and it probably wont work.. but a few bits of info together may help point out possible culprits.
one question i would ask of those using the Nforce 4 boards is which nic are you using.. my boards have the nvidia nic, and marvell nic. i find that using the marvell has helped some with this problem. since network cards have become integral parts of motherboards they often can get overlooked as a problem source.
lets also suppose that you have: A.) tested your memory with memtest (multiple passes, so heat issues can arrise) and it is passing. B.) that you have done the basic windows disc error check with automatically fix errors (reboot required) and defrag. C.) that you have completely updated your windows installation. if you havent, now would be a good time.
finally dont post if you have this problem and are overclocking as this can create more problems on its own. and we cant prove or disprove the stability of your system. (manufacturer spec systems only)
and finally ask that people having this problem post some basic stats, not a complete system list.(please include your single core if it also has the problem) motherboard, processor, video and sound. eg:asus a8n-sli dlx, a64 x2 3800+, evga 7900gt, onboard sound

As I said in the firt one, my issues were all driver related.
My pc never crashed in any other game or anything. Just EVE. it got bad enough that I couldn't jump anywhere, then would crash in the middle of nowhere.
I didn't remember at first but I had done some driver updates and it started happening after that.
Nforce4 board with Ati Cards and X2 cpu. Needed a special release of the ATI Drivers that support the Nforce board with Dual Core. I'd look on manufacturers forums and support section. Since so many of you have similar issues even with nvidia cards, i'm assuming there would be a fix available somewhere. I had to look for a while to find mine as I couldn't find it in the downloads area.

Adjusting the affinity of a dual-core or dual-processor machine means you're only running on 50% of your available processor power. Thats not a very good solution to a problem, and shows that the client code needs to be updated to work with newer systems rather than just assuming there is only one CPU.

A bit of a ripose here to Grez. Updating your drivers is not always a good idea. Updating Creative drivers is sometimes a very bad idea(Creative themselves state only update soundcard drivers if you experience problems with the soundcard in lots of situations). I have had so many problems when updating drivers that I no longer do it and as a consequence I no longer have any problems.

My problem exactly. Core2Duo, ASUS P5N32-SLI, 2GB, 7900GTX. It's almost as if the machine is too fast for Eve. I get 100+FPS and CPUs never hit 100%, it's not even stressing my PC.

I had another crash this morning on Jumping into erme system in Sinq. This time however, I had an interesting message when I tried to reconnect. It could possibly support my theory that my system is simply "too fast" for Eve.
OK, so I jump into Erme and CTD. So I immediatly relauch eve and get the following message : "Cluster has reached max user limit you are #64 in queue". Now at the time I figure, ok bit odd. So I shut down the client again and relog. This time it starts fine.
After talking to my mate at work (who also plays Eve) he mentioned that this was quite common for a node death (he plays down in catch region and they have plenty of node deaths due to fleet wars etc). So here's my theory.
My client connection to the Eve Proxy is fine, but when I undock or move to another system, the proxy has to change my connection to a different node. My client requests the node very quickly before the proxy has connected to the node, proxy says "sorry node not available", so the client thinks ok it's dead, i'll shutdown.
Is there someing in this or am I talking nonsense ?

The common thread among us all seems to be ASUS motherboards. It is definitely not sound related as I have toggled audio to =0 in the config file and still had CTD's.
I have updated my nforce drivers for motherboard. I have updated my sound drivers. I have updated my video card drivers. I have uninstalled EVE, and reinstalled three times. I have all of my windows patches.
This is really starting to **** me off. It only happens when coming out of stations, or while jumping. It began with Dragon. Someone seriously needs to at least say "we're looking into it".

Everyone pls stfu about sound, so we can focus on the issue.

Every other game is stable, great framerates. I have run Oblivion full on, while decoding a DVD, with other apps running and never had a crash. I recently started playing EVE. On the first day had a couple crashes... by the fourth day it crashes almost every docking/jump.
There are so many CCP apologists on this board that it's laughable. Just because your dookie systems run the game fine doesn't mean that every crash for someone else is system related. It is the client's inability to properly run on a certain system configuration that is the issue.

I posted a possible fix for dual-core issues on the second page of this thread. Can people please try it and report back? No guarantees, but this trick is known to fix CTDs at least on some machines.
To recap:
Quote: Add the line advancedDevice=1 to the prefs.ini file and then load Eve and in the graphics section of the preferences window change the 'present interval' setting to interval one. Also try this in window mode as well as full screen.

Good News!
Someone suggested playing in windowed mode. I have verified that this works. I have not had a CTD since i began playing in windowed mode on Friday.
So if anyone is actually looking at this issue, it is only happening in full screen.

I think many of us have tried this and found it wasn't helping....well it didn't for me anyway It's a real odd one this....certain fixes are working for some people and not for others.

make sure you get the optimizer for the AMD duel core from www.amd.com and they newest driver from there. If ou are thinking that windows update has the newest drivers it doesn't. just so you know I am not full of ****, I have a AMD 4400+ x2, 2 gig ram, ATI Radion x800, SB Live 24bit. I also run omega drivers for my vid card drivers.
SB audigy 2's and there drivers for this card cause issues with EVE and a few other games, it has been the curse of the audigy since the first audigy sound card came out. That is why ppl are saying sound issues. I had the whole CTD when I had my audigy2 installed and turned off sound and still had CTD had to pull it out and delete the drivers and then wala no more CTD I can run in both window and full screen with no problems at all.

What does the optimizer do? I heard someone say that it slows down your performance. I really don't want to do that when CCP may be able to fix the problem.
But I don't mind windowed mode and it works, so I'm happy for now. I wouldn't call it a "fix", but it sure is better than what other people seem to think is a "fix" (running without sound).
DIE! ok don't die, i'm just kidding, are you ok?

I have this optimizer installed, playing in window mode, but it doesn't prevent Eve from random freezes, so freezing that I can't even do a soft reset ...
Any devs want to answer ?

Well I was getting all the crashes, lockups and BSODs that most others seem to be getting , I installed all the latest drivers, patches and fixes, tried all the boot.ini tricks, disabled audio in game and tried 3 different audio cards (on board realtech, Hercules Game theater XP, and my current Audigy 2zs platinum pro) but still kept getting problems. in the end I disabled cool 'n quiet, and I managed to play for well over 5 hours strait without a single crash and no need to set to single processor mode or set affinity to use only one core.
I'm going to try again with audio enabled and see how far I get but I think I managed to solve my problem, so if you havent all ready tried turn off cool 'n quiet in the bios and see how you get on.
oh btw sys spec is: AMD Athalon 64 X2 4200+ MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Asus v9999GE Creative Audigy 2zs platinum pro 2GB RAM

If your system is liquid cooled, it should be ok without cool and quiet right?

I too was experencing frequent crashes and locksups. Couldn't go 5 systems without a jump into a new system causing a crash. So I decided to format my machine and start from scratch. Got WindowsXP back and all that garbage, and installed brand new drivers for everything - but I did NOT install the AMD Optimizer.
That's right, no optimizer. Just the latest AMD processor driver. It worked for me, so maybe it might help a few of you.
My setup (Just to see if you have something similar)
AMD 4400+ X2 ASUS A8N SLI Premium GeForce 7800 GTX (xfx made) Corsair RAM 2 GB Montego DDL Sound Card
A point of note, a friend of mine has the exact same setup as myself; both of us have come to the conclusion that this setup is somewhat unstable without proper driver management and fiddling with it.

Don't laugh at the newbie.
Cool n quiet just slows the processor and fan down to reduce noise when not under load, disabling just means your processor runs at it's stock speed (or OCed speed) and the fan at a constant speed.

Well guys I guess the problem is fixed and we are all crazy. I just got this last message in my petition from GM Retrofire before I closed it with a terse message of my own.
"Whether the problem is in our software or not I can't say but installing the upgrades we suggested has solved almost all players's problems."
I sent him a link to this thread. Obviously he decided that I made it up.
I'm just going to get a single core processor and be done with it.

I have the same ctd with my x2 3800+.
most of the time at jumpgates or when I, leave a station.
Total pain in the ass, if I must add. Running latest drivers, stable system, and only EVE seems to be having problems.

Bomb, you know I think you might have hit the jackpot !
I have not had a CTD on jumping or undocking since making these changes a few days ago. So far so good. I am not sure what the advancedDevice=1 function does but certainly the "interval one" setting is basically enabling v-synch. My FPS is pegged to max 60fps, which is no great problem.
I will continue to monitor for a couple of weeks and report back.

Seeing as this thread had dropped to page 4 I can only assume people are not seeing the CTDs any more ?
I had my first CTD for over a week just last night. which is way better than the numberous CTDs before. So either CCP fixed something or the changes suggested earlier in the thread have worked around the problem.

Well I applied the advice given by BombCrater and I played for over 8 hours yesterday without a single CTD! This was after having 4 succesive CTD's the day before all on undocking from the same station.

Originally by: Karash Amerius Well...there has been numerous threads on this forum stating that several patches ago, Eve started to randomly crash to desktop for quite a few players.

Windows xp 32 bits dual core amd 3800+ 8600 gt 1 go memory all drivers update dual core amd optimizer install
Here is the problem :
When dual core is activate eve have fps / 2 or by 3 and its extremely annoying for pvp you know what i mean. This issue happen only with eve , games like Lost Planet , Oblivion , Rainbow six vegas , Test Drive Unlimited etc etc don't have any problem. Change core affinity in ctrl+alt+supr tab isnt enough for fix the prob.
For fix the problem the computer need to be force to boot on 1 core only. (using the command :multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP single CPU" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn /onecpu in boot.ini).
In the "Boost Fps" topic there is other peoples with similar systems and problem.
I don't have much hope about all this problems fixes i guess they are just expecting new graphic engine will do it.
