No, just stop now - first off, have you ever gone and killed someone in game before? Its a rush, a rush, you argue, we would pursue in real life if it were not for laws and other restrictive means in place.
This is pure bull. I'm a nice, easy-going student in real life who would not harm another soul unless my own existence was threatened, yet you claim that if society did not have restrictions on me, I'd go out on a murdering rampage like I would in game? That's not accurate - why do I kill in game, for the rush and knowledge that I beat my opponent, not purposefully to exterminate them from the game, there are clones for a reason. This is a game, where we have fun, this is not the Sims: Real Life Simulation Version.
We are not just a bunch of animals that follow our instincts, we have desires and instincts, but an intellect which regulates their expression as well. All you non-pirate types that think we're supressed real life bullies, murderers, or thieves need to get off of your ideological high ground and face the facts that you're full of it.

What are video games?
Fantasy.
Less than 70 years, a charming and charismatic tyrant sent millions to their deaths. He didn't do it himself, literally millions of people participated, by voting for him, by supporting him, by joining his army, by ratting out their neighbors, by locking the doors, guarding the exits, and filling the death chambers with poison gas.
Were they all psychopaths? Murderers?
No. They were normal people.
When society said it was the proper time to start killing, they participated in killing.
We're all hard wired the same way.
In a video game, society says this is the proper time to start killing. So we kill.

No, internet is NOT an extension of rl.
Of course the internet is not an extension of real life. The internet is decentralised wide area network distributed across the world for the purpose of easy and fast communication and exchange of ideas.
However, are we not defined by the choices we make? And there are plenty of choices that we make on the internet...

I was in a noob cruiser, all happy that I'd gotten it, feeling good about the game and interested in continuing. Flying along in medsec space with a friend just a few jumps ahead of me (my friend was in a Rifter, we're both new to the game)
When all of a sudden my friend tells me that a battleship is killing him, he's dead........
This was the exact reason i signed up for eve.
About 3 months ago in my 14 day trial, i got sent into 0.4 to do a courier mission and i stupidly thought it would be alright (there was a good reward for the mission as well) and the second i jumped i saw red blinking in the overview so i started to panic and my ship was destroyed as i shot back with my small railgun.
I cant remember the last time a game actually made my heart race like that, the fact that you can lose a lot of hard work by going into the wrong systems makes the game a lot les boring, if you dont see it that way then eve isn't for you.
I dont understand what you mean by 'midsec space' either - as far as i can see, 0.5 and above is high-sec and 0.4 and below is low-sec. I should hope there are random people ganking in 0.4, thats the whole point. I wouldnt even think of going into 0.4 in anything i couldnt afford to replace.
You my friend gonna be a fulltime killer someday
I wish you the best of luck, you got the right attitude..

We're all hard wired the same way.
In a video game, society says this is the proper time to start killing. So we kill.
Chess is a violent game (pvp game)...dont see you saying all chess grandmasters would kill their opponent if they had a chance.
It is a game...football, rugby all violent games. The majority of people play them to have fun and leave the violence on the field.
If you dont see the fun of playing games vs. other people then you are missing a huge part of the human experience, challenging eachother in games is a fundamental part of human development and in no way a deviant behavior.
Grow up and learn to let things go. Its a game, its a few pixels, if you loose a ship go buy another. If you are flying stuff around you cant afford to loose, that is your problem not the other players.
Edit: You know what your anology is bit weird and off...i would take time to explain in detail but I dont think you really care...you have made up your mind up about people without actually knowing them and thats the actual sad part.
what happens sometimes has more to do with the inherent instict of self survival then inherent instinct to want to kill people.
Lots of times people who dont follow orders end worse off for it.

The same ppl who in-game would kill for fun, would also kill for fun in RL if they knew %100 they wouldn't get caught.
There are 2 million Americans in prison. Those are just the ones that got caught. Most crime is not even reported, and a large percentage of the crime that is reported is never solved, and a percentage of the crimes that are solved, the suspect can't be found, and a percentage of suspects who are found, are found not guilty.

Cipher you're a dumb troll without the slightest hint of a braincell and I hope you leave this game for people with some mental capacity, who can handle the vast difference between the "pretend", that is the ultimately inconsiquential virtual worlds in which we "play" and the "real", the world from which we cannot escape, or log out, and must face the consequences of our's and other's actions and must bear in mind the consequences of our actions properly before we take them. - - - - - - - - - -

You seriously need to understand that most people can tell fantasy from reality and allow themselves to do things in fantasy that they would never do in reality. Just because someone is willing to PLAY A GAME WITH YOU does not mean that they are willing to actually do what they do in the game to you. I don't know how the crap you came to that outrageous belief, and I seriously feel sorry for you if you're that screwed up that you actually believe that, but I - along with almost everyone else here - am here to tell you that it's just plain stupid.
According to you, every child who has ever heald two fingers together and said "bang bang" is a murderer and would be willing to shoot people if they thought they could get away with it. Cops and robbers is a game, but it doesn't mean that the child playing the robber wants to rob banks and kill people. It's a bloody game. Games are not reality. Period. ---

You call it ganking - hell I call it ganking, but it is not without its risks or rewards.
Not to mention the only time I get to 'relax' in eve is when I am in the station. Otherwise my nasty sec status keeps me in a mandatory persistent state of readiness.

FFS - reading comprehension 4tw!!?!
as far as i understand it - he IS NOT talking about "you kill someone in a game so you're a bad person in reallife" ... he IS talking about contextualization.
context in EVE is: KILLING IS GOOD .. allmost everyone in EVE is a killer (be it pirate or missionrunner) only few never shot at another player or an NPC.
context in our society is: KILLING IS BAD .. allmost no one shot someone in reallife - still there are some that did it.
it doesn't matter if you can get away with it or not - it matters in which context you're socialized. and everyone that started to enjoy the internet experienced a second or maybe even third socialization - join a new community/society and you have to socialize again.
games are reality - but they are not reallife. ___________________

So out of interest, exactly what, other than the threat of jail/capital punishment or whatever, makes you not kill irl?
Its not as outlandish an accusation as it sounds, at least not if you ignore the conditioning you've obviously had for your entire life about what is "bad" and what is "good."
Which is not to say that Cipher7 doesn't seem as guilty of said conditioning as you do.

Im bored -> I grief.
1/4 of the fun is the local chat or private convos when people accuse me of being a 12yr old or something like that, smack talking is teh funneh.
The rest is just seeing people go completely bonkers over a computer game, seeing a person loosing it completely over a virtual thing like a ship or some ore and resorting to name calling, threats and other fun stuff is simply something that entertains me. it's a game ffs, it's not a social society where everything has to be by the book and shooting down your ship means something! it's like crying over the little turtles in Super Mario bros. :)
And then it's fun when people try to catch you, thats always fun.
So yes Im a shameless griefer and in real life im a 30yr old software developer that looks at griefing in eve as a feature and I dont have the time to play with corporations, ive got enough isk to last me for years in EVE so missions, mining or whatnot dont interest me at all, so I use that gameplay feature when I need some cheap thrills.

I steal from ore cans when I get bored, and from loot cans to egg someone into shooting me to avoid a sec hit. But consider:
Rupture flies around Rupture finds Bustard picking up all his cans Rupture steals from one, possibly with a "kekekeke" here and there Nemesis decloaks Rupture fights and kills Nemesis +1 cloak for Rupture
Looting, pillaging, stealing, and griefing is a great way to get fabulous loot sometimes, yanno. ---------------------------- Remember, killing a Goon isn't murder. They don't have souls. |

If the only thing that keeps you from killing people is fear...then you are a bit srewed up.
Even in a Hobbesian view of things their is usually reason behind the mayhem...something to fight over, a resource or goal. Its not just mindless zombies killing everything.
IT IS JUST A GAME...humans have been playing competitive PvP games for a very long time, get over yourselves please. Just because someone wants to beat you at a game does not mean they want to kill people in real life.
