Yes, warp to 0 makes it harder to instagank people. Thats why its a good change. People arguing against it because it dumbs down eve is what I was arguing against. Its the opposite, really. Now pirates have to work harder and be more organized to get kills.
You know exactly what I mean, and frankly I didn't expect the wise-guy treatment from you, I am disappointed.

Well, there is a bit of that, but it isn't the whole story.
Remember when CCP nerfed lvl4's? Did everyone leave hi-sec to go and do something harder and more risky to keep the same level of income? Nope, they sat in Empire, grinded their mission, and moaned.
If you moved all lvl4 missions out of hi-sec do you think all the mission runners would move to lo-sec? I doubt it, they would just grind lvl3 mission, and moan enough about quitting until CCP threw them a bone.
Those people will not face risk. They believe they have a right to play unmolested. They aren't playing Eve-Online, they are only playing a subset of it, and that is all they are willing to play. They don't want anything to happen which they are not in control of. You won't see them leave hi-sec until PvP is made consentual ...
your slightly off the mark there Avon (btw did you used to play ww2ol ?) i run level 4's in empire, i live in 0.0 where i run many risks daily, level 4's in empire for me are a kind of R&R, and i bet there's a lot more who do the same, so sorry but that assessment is totaly wrong (imho)

Maybe you are right and they wouldnt leave high sec even if low sec was very profitable, but at least then the game would be fair in terms of risk/reward like it should be. So I think they should move level 4's to low sec. If the grinders want to spend their game in high sec with level 3's, and put in twice the amount of time to make the same bucks as in low sec, then so be it. But the ones who take the risks should get good rewards.

It is a generalisation, so there are bound to be exceptions. It isn't like I have never run a lvl4 mission either. However, as generalisations go, I would say it is still pretty valid.
I certainly know a lot of players (and don't get me wrong, they are great people) who conform to the stereotype I describe. Claiming that adding warp to 0 will draw them out of empire is untrue, it just isn't the game they want to play.

Edited by: Nicholai Pestot on 10/11/2006 11:46:00 I would have to agree with Avon.
Back when i was a nubbin mining scord in tash-murkon prime i was terrified of going into lowsec. I had this sorta mental block whereby i simply refused to go into lowsec because of the big bad PvPers.
Course after the war system came in my carebear mining corp got decced and i found out what i was missing.
I salute you random wardeccing 'griefers', without you i may still have been stuck in hi-sec grinding missions or mining scord to this day.

Sorry Avon where i run missions i see tons of people from other 0.0 alliances all the time, anyway as we both both probably know anyone whose only playing one aspect of the game is seriously missing out right ? whose missing out there ? they are, and thats my feeling about gate gankers who only want to cheap ganks, and want to keep the lag instas cause or what ever else it takes to maintain a very pathetic status quo. no thx mate warp to 0 is excellent (imho)

But "cheap ganks" are already very much harder on sisi, the situation has been quite effectively addressed. If you think I argue against warp to 0 because I want to gank people at gates, you are very much mistakened. One of the main aspects of my continued (and it is literally years of debate on the issue) postion is that the safety and speed of instas have to be addressed as seperate issues in order to bring about a reasonable solution. If gate ganking is too easy, make it harder (which has been done). Instas should not be seen as a valid defence to ganking, and no balance can be reached so long as they are seen as such.

As long as "Warp to 0" is manual, I fail to see a problem.
It won't speed up people who used to AFK travel, and it won't slow down people who already had instas.
What "Warp to 0" does is it remove the need for more and more people to get instas for everywhere - which is a Very Bad Thing for the servers.
I would like to know what your solution would be, Avon.
I'm not trying to troll/flame/whatever. I'm curious, however.

I just see to many +'s for warp to 0 and hardly any -'s tbh. only noobs aren't using instas, whose benfitting here ? gate campers who prey upon cheap ganks. instas take up untold hours of time thats wasted, to copy. they cause server lag that can be done away with (the lag they cause not lag in itself) less lag everyones happy. who knows maybe even fleet battles may become viable again. never said you were a whiney gate camper :) you never answered my q anyway.

Personally I would be happy to have all instas removed, with no ability to remake them, and no replacement.
My compromise position, however, has always been a module (now either lo-slot or a rig) which halfs your warp-in distance. (And you can verify that by searching my numerous posts on the subject, which has been ongoing for a very long time).

A skill sucks, because its just a time sink and everybody eventually trains it. Back to 0 with nothing changed. Except newbies wont have it and will get killed until they do...
No. Bad idea.

Jump queues, anyone?
Edit: For clarity.
jump queues in 0.0 jumping from an empty system into an empty system, go figure that one :( cant wait for instas to be gone. dont want to lose a slot at all. a skill maybe, but warp to 0 works for everyone so hey. bubbles pull people off gates if placed right you'll still get many people travelling afk all over.

It isn't "lose" a slot, it is "use" a slot.
You compromise one area of your ship's performance to gain an advantage in another area.
It is called "balance".

We really need to split this into two problems:
1) The issues that arise from warping directly to a gate.
2) The server load caused by instas.
Whether you think that Warp to 0 is a good thing or not, I don't think anyone can deny that it will reduce server load. This is a good thing and as far as I can see has no downside at in terms of problem 2.
Now, addressing problem 1 is trickier. There have been many ideas and debates on the subject for years. So, given that instas need to be removed to address problem 2, should CCP:
a) (warp to 0) Replace instas with a feature that changes nothing in the gameplay mechanics (ignore the impact on BM sellers)
b) (any one of the various ideas touted so far) Rush to implement a system with which they are not happy and has massive impacts on the rest of the game.
I think that option a is by far the most sensible. It does leave the issue to direct to gate warping unresolved, but I think that no fix is better than a half-arsed fix.
In the mean time "warp to 0" will clear a lot of server lag. Let's just be grateful for that.

there was a hidden message in the post
And for the warp to 0 is a good fix cause if people have to warp at 15 they just wont go to 0.0 cause there will be a tiny chanse they survive the trip and then we are back to where every nub and carebear hugs the empire "safe" systems
and we want more people (to kill) in 0.0 dont we? Im no alt!!! |

Yes. Optimally, CCP would contract a firm to develop an in-game macro, smootly integrated to the EVE user interface, which would press the buttom according to your settings (i.e. one/two/three time(s) every second/minute/hour etc.). This service would, of course, only be available at a (small) fee.
As a side-note; the macro would be operated from external servers and, hence, no additional lag should be expected. ........ There's a thin line between professional gate camping and just standing by a gate looking like an idiot... |
