I find it highly doubtful you would gain any respect by being known as the guy who dumped 5M+ skillpoints down the drain just for the chance at a little glory or a BP; lots of people would be laughing very hard.
And I'd be laughing right back at them. The people that say "Yes" have 2 things over those who laugh, things that those who laugh will never have:
1) The understanding that this is a game.
2) The freedom to have fun because of #1.

I've had only two PVP experiences, both when I was heavily overmatched, but even if I had to take mt cruiser against a battleship, with no special tricks the BS would not be a definite win.
So hell yes I would go for it.
Two month's ago a bastard in a BB attacked my limping cruiser, I was allready on fire when he happened apon me in p-346. I can't remember who he is but one day I'll find that SOB and pod his a s s.
Stop griping about server instability and go buy an EVE mug!
Additionally with the purchase of each mug you will receive two(2) invisible Elves.

Oh, please. I really am rolling my eyes in real life at this post. I shouldn't even bother saying what a ridiculous generalization this is; just another "People who don't enjoy the same things I do just don't understand this game."
EVE has goals, among them are gaining skills so you can do interesting things. I guess because I enjoy having skillpoints to fly better ships and get more out of my weapons and modules I just don't understand how to have fun with the game. Poor me, not enjoying myself. Here I thought I was having a blast.

Okay, nice analogy except; Fun at casinos = losing some of your money. Not fun at casinos = losing all of your money.
Face it man, the statement you made was a joke. Just because people aren't willing to throw out all they've accomplished, even if they're imaginary accomplishments, doesn't mean they're not enjoying themselves or that they don't "understand that this is a game."

best question ever.
For that *specific* prize, no. Given that the 1v1 fight eliminates most of the Stupid factors currently plaguing combat, i think i would. Skills take so bloody long to train now, doing several a day might seem refreshing again .
I'd also like some sort of stroy and game-mechanic driven Thing to move it along, rather than a Mud-like "a Wiz teleports you and your rival to a 10x10 room with no exits to settle your differences..." Something to make some attempt at explaining why this is happening and how.
Like i dunno a mad Jovian offering something (NOT AN UNLIMITED BLOODY BLUEPRINT)(limited is OK)(as long it's like 100 or something and not 4) to whomever finds him... then demanding that the first two people to do so must fight each other for the prize, but only if they deliberately have their own clones trashed first...
so short form = Yeah, probably.

Sorry to play the skeptic, but I have a sneaking feeling half the people on this thread so far who have said "Sure I'd do it!" would back down if the opportunity actually presented itself.
The fact that there's probably no chance of this ever happening makes it a lot easier to pretend like you would sign yourself away to n00b SP again; unless of course you're so bored with EVE you're planning on quitting anyway.
Though don't worry, Jash, I still believe you would be silly enough to go through it, just so you could brag about it from your Ibis afterward.

... I think i'd try it if the prize was a custom, limited to single unit ever edition of the Jove battleship. I don't care about the money, but something unique, sleek, sexy and gigeresque with hopefully nice story arc attached is different thing altogether.
Problem is, would also have to get really, really drunk to actually go for that, which kinda makes the outcome quite obvious.... :s

Well that's sorta why I said a Concord battleship.
Concord would be looking for the bravest and best pilot in the universe. To prove the bravest, enter a combat tourney with no clone. To prove the best, come out on top.
Balance the Concord SpecOps bship to what the best designers from all 4 races could make (namely weapon bonuses for all weapon types and bship sensor strength in all 4 sensor types) and you got one hell of a ship.
Now the question would be, would the winner sell the ships or outfit his buddies into a force to reckon with?

I have no doubt we would see you in a competition like this; you never pass up a chance to run your mouth whatever the cost.

Exactly what I said in the first place; the only people in their right minds who would do this would be those who are bored to the point of quitting anyway, and have "nothing to lose" in a sense.
Very few people who actually plan on sticking with the game would do this, unless the prize was absolutely astronomical.

I would never waste 6 month's of training and over 5.5 million skill points for a single Uber price. If I was quitting the game, I would much rather sell my account to make some money back and recover my expenses.
It would be stupid to waste all that invested time and money on a single price I may not even win.
I do believe there are people out there willing to do such a thing. More power to them.

It's the difference between those who played on the normal Diablo II servers and those that played on the Hardcore ones. Some people just enjoy something that involves risk.

First, I wasn't calling anyone stupid. It would be stupid for *me* to waste my account since I like to make my money back when I stop playing an MMO's.
Secondly, your assumption that people who are involved in high risk activities understand something that I don't and to imply they are better gamers is ridiculous. They don't understand anything better than anyone. It is just in their character to be involved in high risk activities for the simple thrill and joy of it. Some people are willing to give up more than others for that feeling. Doesn't make them any better than the calculating or conservative types because they are having fun in their own ways.
Thirdly, I was stating my opinion since this is a theoretical question. But I see this was just a trap so you can indulge yourself in attacking people and argue with yourself again.
I should know better than to participate in anything with the name Jash Illian written all over it. This thread is just another..."If you don't play the way I do you suck!" More schoolyard tactics from your part.

Given my nature if I believed that someone who participated in a contest like that was a better gamer than you, I'd have said exactly that. You progressed past the subtle attack stage a long time ago.
You read exactly what you wanted to read into what was said: Me attacking you so you could chime up with an attack on me of your own. Strange how Bad Harlequin, who does not like me, can accept the question at face value but you can't.

I'm not even going to bother to reply to this point by point. It's not worth it. Just continue inflating yourself since that's what you always do. Maybe they actually understand something I don't? Could you try to be a little more self-serving in your posts? I'm not quite totally sick of reading about how cool you are.
I hate to burst your elitist bubble but there's jack **** you understand about high risk PVP that I haven't been dealing with for a decade or more, I hardly need you to school me about how risking things can be fun.
Diablo II? Are you kidding me? Diablo II is a ******* joke in the world of PvP. That you even mentioned it in this discussion is proof enough your talking out of your ass.
There was a mode on the game I used to play that let you gain power 50% faster but deleted your character if you died. Every veteran player in the game would laugh and ridicule players who started <Hardcore> because they knew their day would come. They would arrive, play for months talking **** about how fast they were passing everyone up and getting uber powerful, die, and quit the game in frustration at realizing how many hours they simply tossed down the toilet. It too was about a big reward, and bragging rights; and guess who was on the losing end every single time without fail? The morons who got greedy and couldn't resist the lure of the prizes without considering any long term consequences.
Risk is what makes PvP fun; but people who use their brains in deciding what to risk, when, where and with whom are the ones who come out on top. I wouldn't hesitate to laugh in the face of anyone who would participate in this kind of a competition just to see the last 6 months of their gaming flushed.
