Hello everyone, I want to ask the CCP to share with us some interesting statistics. We all see that number of players going down and reason of this not a point of this thread. Of course we are all worried about our favorite game. So. How many active subscribers has EVE? What is the average number of unique players per day (if 1 man have 3 accounts this doesnt mean that it is 3 unique players)? We do not need the exact figures. It can be something like "each player have 1.3 accounts" and etc.
Can you show us a bit of trust and share this statistics? I believe that Eve did not die at all. But the other is no such certainty. Let's give it to them |

To my knowledge, CCP have got all private, so there is no requirement to release any of the performance metrics to the public.

Sorry to burst your little optimism bubble. Also fromt hat thread dude summed some of the data up from the IRS.
Quote: CCP Employment: 603 - 2010, December 553 - 2013, September 508 - 2013, December 339 - 2014, December (FML that bloodletting.)
Revenues down ~10% from 2013 to 2014 in all locations. (North America, Europe and Asia)
In game unused plex up ~30%. Must be a lot of plex hoarding going on.

So you know you may be on to something there.... Right now its 39C in my office and i have no aircon...
More seriously. I didn't know that. I just don't see eve going anywhere soon. It has weathered many storms. But at the same time things like the isboxer uncertainties did cost a lot of accounts of people i know. I myself held off getting 4 more accounts. That is my little island of eve. Perhaps we are at a downturn. If CCP do it right however, eve won't be dying and as far as i am aware there is no legal obligation to share financial information or even things like total number of subscribers.

A few things:
1) To CAM: The employee numbers being lower in 2014 are perfectly in line with the ending of WoD. remember before fan fest 2014 they let go of a ton of people as part of the restructure when they closed WoD. thats not new information and doesn't really mean anything execpt they, for all intents and pourposues, closed a studio. Thats not new infformation
2) Rev being down 10%
here is the problem with this, CCP has two games, Dust was chugging along in earily 2014, untill they screwed up and did the rouge wedding. This drove a ton of the dust player base away, as well as you had countless people asking for refunds from sony.
This would impact CCP's bottom line, the question however, is how much?
This is the problem. Its now difficult to see where the numbers are becuase you don;t knwo which game is causing the loss. In theory, from 5/14/13 (when dust went live) till 12/2013 dust might of contruibuted a good chunk of money. But it may not have. Then you have dust taking a hit last year, because it did, only to bounce back and now be profitable this year.
If ccp released the subscription numbers, and lets say they were not and are not currently down (more then likly they are, but not a smuch as people doom and gloom) then you coudol do simple math and figure out that dust was in fact hemoring money. So why announce it?
now on the flip side, you have things like a war on bots, jump fatige, fozzie sov, imput duplicaiton ban, etc that could be causeing some players to shed unneeded or unwated acocunts. This doens;t really mean eve is dying, just getting leaner. the PCU being low, you coudlk have lots of people who have accounts trianing while they wait for fozzie sov to hit in two weeks.
The point is, there are MANY factors that get into PCU and financials that we don;t have access to. I don;t think we will get a good picture at how well eve is doing untill the end of 2016 tbh. Becuase once the fozzie sov changes hit, sov phase 3. structures 2.0, cap rebaalance, you won;t see where the health of eve is till then. But if Valk drops next year, you might see a huge cash influx into eve. as i said next year will be the year for a better picture then this. This year is more of a trasition year, but we will see
*Disclaimer yes i am an eve fan boi, and ccp will take my money till eve closes or i die.

here is the problem with this, CCP has two games, Dust was chugging along in earily 2014, untill they screwed up and did the rouge wedding. This drove a ton of the dust player base away, as well as you had countless people asking for refunds from sony. Be realistic, they've had a lot more than just the WoD team leaving.
The reality is that outside of CCP noone will really know the truth, but reduced player counts is not a good thing. You can call it "becoming leaner" to sound overly optimistic, but a sub lost is a sub lost. I'm not a "EVE is dying OMG!" type of person, but I'm open to the reality that it's not a roaring success either. Changes need to be made to bring in more profit (and they are, see ship skins, auto-renewing paypal subs, etc). Sure, summer will be having some effect but if your honest about it, you know that's not all it is. EVE just isn't as much fun as it used to be. IMHO, there's too much focus on pleasing the most vocal groups and not enough on pushing entertaining game design.
All that aside though, CCP used to be alot more open which was something I loved about them, but that's slowly died off. We used to get information on subs and a lot more statistics, even data like the QEN which was great. Nowadays outside of fanfest we just get adhoc bits in dev blogs, twitter and reddit. I for one would love to see a return to the much more open CCP of old.

Eve had a good long run of subscriber growth - as long or longer than any MMO. While it was growing, they touted the growth. When it started its inevitable decline, they shut up and started hiding the numbers. There's a good reason for doing that. People leaving can have a snowball effect if it's too easy to see and quantify.
Population is noticeably down, which is why these threads keep popping up here, and on reddit, TMC, etc.
No reason to panic. Eve will likely go on for many years, but it'll go on as a mature game, where what goes on in game is less and less "emergent", and more predictable. EQ1 is still chugging along with its die-hard players. It's just not growing or attracting new players anymore.
The engine of growth for a game is either its "stickiness" or ability to retain players and get players to refer others, or it's paid growth. As with many mature products, CCP has had to rely on "paid" growth (advertising) more and more to attract new players these last few years, as retention and referral have declined.
Nothing stays "hot" forever folks. I wouldn't be surprised to see Eve get sold off to an investor group in the next year or so, as Sony did with SOE. Since it's CCP's only viable property these days, it'd be prudent for them to start thinking exit strategy.

Yeah but as I said, the work is planned around that right?
Or do they let 90% of the staff go away because they want without a downturn in the work to be done?

this makes no sense. CCP is eve. Sony selling SOE makes sense. sony is an electronics and entertainment compay. selling of fa single division will not hurt them.
CCP is a video game company with two products. You can not sell off eve, as then ccp loses rights to dust and valk, all set in the eve universe.
What CCP can do, is sell off White Wolf. White Wolf is a division or subsidiary of CCP games. Thats a bettwe annology. What you pretty much just said is that Sony will sell off sony. See the difference?

Yup! Playing ships, WoT, M&B Warbands and Napoleonic, Dirt Rally, Heroes and Generals, ETS2, War Thunder. Cat Goes Fishing (!!!!!) among others. Not playing much EVE, except for the skill sheet. Couldn't care less about Fozziesov though. It doesn't change anything for new players.
EVE posts across the internet are getting that stench of fear these days. Probably for good reason. A 17 month decline is not a seasonal thing.
In thinking about it, EVE players might just love maintenance mode. Nothing would change so nothing would rock the boat. Same game every day. Seriously, because there wouldn't be anything left to ***** about that you couldn't just copy/paste from an earlier post. From what I've seen, the players hate everything new anyways. |

I don't think anything will change upon releasing a new sov system, its the same old grind, for the same old rewards and the same group of players driving content in the wrong directions.
I and many others will let their subs lapse and never return in the next few weeks / months due to CCPs in ability to add excitement and retain players.

It makes perfect sense if you're an Eve shareholder and you'd like to take your equity and do something else with it. By your logic, George Lucas selling LucasFilm makes no sense. Except that it does, to George Lucas. He converted an asset into cash.
Selling Eve would essentially be selling CCP, since it's the only CCP asset that is worth much, but, if you're a CCP shareholder and you're looking at a one-title company with a single title that's getting long on the tooth, figuring out how to exit while your equity is still worth something is just smart business.

Uhm , yes it does make sense.CCP is not eve ,eve is a game made by the company CCP and as we all know companies that have their backs against the wall only have 2 options left.Either save what can be saved so sell of your products or go down with the ship.
I am not saying that what davet517 said is going to happen but it is a verry possible scenario if **** hits the fan.And since CCP still is milking one cow , eventually that cow will not give enough milk .

As Ive gotten older Ive come to realize that all things, both good and bad, eventually end. So its no surprise in the decline in Eve in the past few years. Players have resisted a lot of the big changes by whining about changes to the gameplay they disliked that couldve breathed new life into the game on dramatic or lesser levels in order to farm the game in the style and ways theyd grown accustomed to. CCP is on a new course charted by CCP Seagull now to make a lot of changes to the game and hopefully breath new life into it.
Will it be in time? Will it be enough? These types of questions remain to be seen tbh. But that this period in Eve is more than just a long pause is obvious. And the future is partly in CCPs hands with new content or changes over the coming few years as well as how the players like, handle and adapt to these changes. That its a bit late imo is just that an opinion and only posterity will say if it is right or wrong in that regard.
So I for one will wait and see what unfolds and stick around a bit longer.

This. So much this.
And I love how people put themselves forward as business finance experts or video game market gurus. You know, the people that go all ape**** about CCP restructuring debt, going dark on financials, blah blah blah blah. There's so much confirmation bias too. EvE numbers are down while people wait for Foz Sov in the middle of the summer and next thing you know 10 page treatises on statistics and analytics go up to confirm whatever point of view made you waste those precious few moments of your life on Reddit trying to make yourself look smarter than the average bear. Great work Detectives!!!
Makes me wonder why I ever open any of these threads....
I think I'll go mow my grass.

Eve is my favorite game, so I am quite concerned about this as well.
There are a few new games on the Market: Elite Dangerous, and Star Citizen. Both look pretty interesting. Star Citizen is gonna have a first person view mode, and first person shooter mode.
I think Eve Online has to evolve in order to maintain competitive. A few years ago, I think the developers were doing the right then when they decided to implement Walk-In-Station, along with some Walk-In-Station games. Perhaps they were ultimately planning to tie it with some kind of first person shooter / third person shooter game. So I think they had a long-term plan to keep the game competitive by evolving the game.
However, the short-sighted players started complaining. Because around that time, there was also a controversial conversation that leaked between internal employees about milking the player base. So that kind of added fuel to the fire, and CCP had to halt the development of Walk-In-Station. But if you think about it, as a business operating for a profit it makes sense to try and maximize income.
I think the players can be too short sighted, and sometimes it's hard to decide whether to listen to the players, or continue with your development plans without listening to the players. Because most of the players probably only care about how they experience the game right now, without considering 3 years down the road. While CCP has to consider about 3 years down the road.
Anyways, there are lots of games operating successfully with both subscription + microtransaction model. An example would be WoW, no matter how much you hate that game. If CCP was raking in with the kind of cash like WoW, they can keep the game more competitive too.
So I think Eve would be in a much better state today, if CCP had went ahead with developing Walk-In-Station instead of listening to the short sighted players.
Because developing new content costs a lot of money. If they start on a downward spiral - they have to pull a rabbit out of their hat to reverse the downtrend. Less subscribers also mean less money available to develop new content. |

It's been fun CCP, but I'm going to get off this boat before it sinks, thanks for all the fish.
speak for yourself. I see things that have been broken being fixed and addressed. I am stupid excited for Structures 2.0, BIaB/Dogma rewtire, and fozzie sov. "New content" has come, in small doses. the issue is the "new content" crowd want to see an apolcarypto type of expansion, which CCP has said is coming. But you don;t build a second story on a house that has its first story falling apart.
EVE is still in repair mode, and will be untill more then likly next year. You can be doom and gloom if you want, i'm enjoying the fixes, and am quite happy to give ccp more money and wait till the new stuff comes. *shrugs*

That's quite a bit more unlikely in Iceland's case specifically. They rejected (sole rejector) an IMF bailout and are known for that decision, and, CCP is primarily a profit center that services the nation. It's not just another corporate scumbag entity that crunches merger/accquistion algorithyms all day. Something like this could happen, but it's less likely in CCP's case. |

Yeah, I think the community supported WiS. Unfortunately, it's timing coincided with the "gold ammo" controversy and both issues became amalgamated. Very unfortunate. Klas Kanjus wrote:Ya your right, no additional gameplay. Except T3 destroyers, a whole new sov system, completety overhauled structures, nerfed Ishtars aka more variety in viable doctrines, drifters......
And the tone... "I'm getting off this boat before it sinks, because if I don't... uh... if I don't... I'll lose everything I don't have invested int he game materially?"
Sigh. CCP FINALLY got all the t3 destroyers out properly. Now they can begin the nerfing process. The non existent fozziesov isn't new content. The effect of some of the structures being overhauled is yet to be seen. Much like fozziesov it still hasn't been implemented yet. CCP hasn't actually nerfed the Ishtar yet. They have on the other hand nerfed a load of other ships while trying to nerf the Ishtar indirectly. Don't worry though once ccp actually nerfs the ishtar you'll be forced into another doctrine all the same. I guess you'll at least get to see a different ship model which I guarantee you will be sick of too.

Yep, to all the players who complained about Walk In Station a few years ago. If you are wondering why Eve's population is decreasing - you are the main reason.
The micro transactions could have given CCP more capital for content development. And it was optional to the player, not a requirement. So if you think it's a rip off, just don't buy it. But because of the outcry, they had to give up the development of micro transactions
Basically, the short-sighted crybabies had a huge impact on where the game is today. |

Numbers are going down because CCP refuses to do anything really new with the game.
They stopped Dust integration and the support for it is a skeleton crew. Valkyrie might as well be a stand alone single player game, because that's going to be the number of players with a rift.
Ambulation had its legs cut off. EVA was stillborn. Player owned deadspace pockets was Hilmar pretty much just making stuff up as he went along.
I kept playing the game because cool things like this were coming, and were easy to get hyped up for. Now it's a game that I've literally done everything in. So why do I care if CCP constantly re-balances my least favorite part of it and calls it content? It's very easy to go inactive in EVE right now and feel no desire at all to resub. Not difficult to see why other people quit too. |

Correction number 1: CCP told players that there would be a focus on WIS and other CCP products for 18 months with no/little focus on internet spaceships.
Correction number 1: CCP then made big vague WIS promises and then delivered a graphics card chewing solo player room with no gameplay content at all.
Correction number 3: When CCP got called out for having a greedy microtransaction for vanity scheme, the CEO's internal response "was screw those players we don't need them" coupled with "gold ammo for gold subscribers".
Correction number 4: Subscriptions in mid 2011 fell heavily prompting the removal of the QEO, we know that online numbers lifted steadily until 2013. Many would suggest that the 2011 customer events saved Eve Online and CCP from going bust in the first quarter 2012.

There is stuff there to buy, but I guess that defeats the purpose of 'complainings' and blaming others from the depths of your imaginations.... you big spender you in your default clothing. So put your rl money where your mouth is and buy something...
Who ever says "EVE can never die"?? that's a new one.... There is "EVE FOREVER" but ti's not that and more of a marketing thing. The only two thing EVE has to fear is 1. someone makes another hard-core mmo with a sub model and no f2p crud, just traditional first gen type challenging mmo. The second thing EVE has to fear? CCP
Anyhoot, I agree, not only summer, but pre-SOV changes. This is very likely a nullsec issue not needing to be online 23/7 right now. Also, I've heard it mentioned before, though have been unable to find CCP documentation of it as of yet, but that W-Space does not count into current online numbers. No idea if that is true, I'm not a scary wormhole person, but if it were that would explain something with increased popularity-usage with WH's lately. |

Someone should probably not tell Klas that we actually had a drop in player numbers this Fri/Sat compared to last week, and last week was a holiday for our bros in the west.
Those financials look horrible on page 1. The employee numbers alone, coupled with the user levels tells us all we need to know.
But it is always comical to see the same "Yes-Men" in this thread with their positive attitudes that just buck all data and reality.

You're probably right, but it mostly would depend on how well FozzieSov pans out. CCP has decided to go all in with FozzieSov and whether it be a hit or miss would ultimately be the deciding factor for eve's future.

I'd just like to point out that pretty much every EVE trailer in recent memory has made heavy use of Ambulation, Dust, or Valkyrie content to supplement it.
I'd say the trailer guys have a better grasp of what excites people better than the developers themselves do, and thats kind of a problem in and of itself. |

Yeah, I know people who have seen EvE trailers, thought game is like that, then disappointed...
ED trailers atleast try to give some percpection what the game is like.
Maybe CCP should not build too big expectations, because dropping from higher hurts more.
Look at WoW players, they like the game and it-¦s mechanics, eventhough graphics and visuals are total crap, they don-¦t need fancy trailers and have millions of players..
EvE has always said to be niche game for just certain type of players (strategic etc.), where is the "niche" if trailers look like newer ED and SC trailers? |

I also think CCP needs to do something to expand this "niche" by lowering the Barrier to Entry. Barrier to Entry is a main reason that keeps new players out.
Eve is over 10 years old. Before starting the game, most beginning players would consider if they will ever be able to catch up to the "veterans" because it takes years to train skill points.
Wow is also over 10 years old, but they still have around 7 million subscribers. To keep getting new players, one of the things that Blizzard do correctly is to lower the Barrier to Entry. So offer a service to instantly boost your character to level 90 for $60. Without it, I doubt they will get as many new players.
Here are a few ideas on how CCP can lower the barrier to entry:
1. Create a system where you can earn skill points faster by doing certain missions.
2. Use PLEX to earn Skill Points at double the speed, 1 PLEX lasts a month.
3. Create a rare item drop that instantly boosts a particular skill to level 4 or level 5. However, this item is very rare, and very expensive. Perhaps some noobs will consider buying plex to pay for this item.
4. Use PLEX to buy Skill Points, perhaps at a 50% premium or double the price. If you think about it, skill points are the same as game time. You use game time to train skill points. So why shouldn't game time be interchangeable with skill points? |

Eve is over 10 years old. Before starting the game, most new players would consider if they will ever be able to catch up to the "veterans" because it takes years to train skill points. There is no need for them to catch up with a veteran in terms of amount of SP, only a little of a vets total SP applies at any one time. What the SP does do is allow a veteran choice.
Just like real life, you start at the bottom of the food chain and work your way up.
Quote:WoW is also over 10 years old, but they still have around 7 million subscribers. To keep getting new players, one of the things that Blizzard does correctly is to lower the Barrier to Entry. By making a game that appeals to a very wide audience, WoW clones attempt to tap into that audience and often fail. CCP have never attempted to tap into that audience with Eve, it's not the kind of game they wanted to make.
Quote:So they offer a service to instantly boost your character to level 90 for $60. Without these measures to lower the barrier to entry, I doubt they would have as many new players. While there is no max levels in Eve this service is already available, in keeping with the ethos of player driven it's a service fueled by players, it's called the character bazaar.
It's not a wise idea for newbies to use it but the service does exist.
Quote:Here are a few ideas on how CCP can lower the barrier to entry:
1. Create a system where you can earn skill points faster by doing certain missions.
2. Use PLEX, or pay an additional $14.95 per month to earn Skill Points at double the speed for a month.
3. Create a rare item drop that instantly boosts a particular skill to level 4 or level 5. However, this item is very rare, and very expensive. Perhaps some noobs will consider buying plex to pay for this item.

2: Microtransactions, which includes services for PLEX, that offer an ingame advantage do not belong in a subscription MMO. Dual character training isn't an advantage because you can only log one character per account in at a time, double training speeds are an advantage in that with such a service a player who chucks money at it gains character SP at twice the rate of one who doesn't.
3: Cue complaints about scams involving said rare item, calls for nerfs to margin trading, and some really expensive kills; it'd backfire hilariously.
4: Why should game time be exchangeable for SP, you made the suggestion, it's up to you to put the case forward for it.
In short, no.

1. Not necessarily add grind, but give the options to new players if they choose. That's why I said "certain missions". There would be missions that offer ISK, and also missions that offer SP, it depends on what they choose to do. They can do either one or the other.
2. There are MMO's operating successfully with both Microtransaction and Subscription. They are not mutually exclusive, because WoW is not doing it. I'm not saying Eve should copy WoW, but you can see they are not mutually exclusive. Of course you can never fully copy something 100%, but you take the concepts that work.
3. What's wrong with having scams involved in these items? There is already scams involved with everything else. I don't see a problem here. You see shuttles getting popped with 20 PLEX'es on board all the time.
4. To get new players. When I started playing a few years ago, one of the things that made me hesitate was the time it takes to train. So what I did was trade and make ISK, then spent 20 billion ISK to buy a fully trained character. But I would have never started playing Eve in the first place, if I didn't see a way to upgrade quicker. I didn't want to wait 4 years for a fully trained character. I would imagine a lot of players are the same way.
I don't understand why #4 is such a controversial topic, it doesn't have to be. Because you can already buy PLEX, convert it to ISK, and use the ISK to buy everything else. This just gives new players more options. Because otherwise they'd have to buy PLEX, sell for ISK, find a character on Character Bazaar, make the transfer, etc. |

Showing that you understand the effects that such a proposal would have on Eve in general and more specifically the price of PLEX, preferably with some graphs; we like graphs. You should then post it over in Features and Ideas where it can the level of attention it deserves from both CCP and other players.
These are just general ideas, and I don't think they're all that bad. They are just concepts.
If CCP think they might have potential, then it's their role to do the number crunching and see if it works.
Everything starts out with a general concept, then the concept is investigated further to see if they will work.
My role as a supportive customer is to pay the $14.95 per month on 3 accounts, and call out a few ideas (or concepts) if I think they might help the game. |

It'd affect both PLEX price and the value of other players time when they sell characters in the character bazaar.
As I said in my previous post, come up with a proposal, show you understand any potential downsides and post in in F&I.

I'm actually not against the idea of being able to buy skill points.
You have $2,000 to spend?
By all means, create your 200mill sp pod pilot brother.
Unless you have 30,000 friends doing the same, you wont affect anything in the sandbox

What people object to is the creation from thin air of SP, it bypasses an existing service powered by players; and it smacks of pay to win, regardless of the fact that trying to do so in Eve generally results in failure.

Barrier to entry is fine. There is a thriving market for "difficult" games, and things such as proper social and exploratory ambulation along with Valkyrie and Dust can pull people into the same player universe. That was the plan for easing in that demographic, and that plan was solid. There was never any reason to deviate from it, yet CCP did and this is the end result. Stagnation.
The hardline excuse of "EVE is about Spaceships" only goes so far. Yea, EVE is about space ships. But CCP wasn't supposed to just be developing EVE, they were supposed to be developing New Eden. And New Eden isn't about space ships.
I always found that bit out of Seagull rather perplexing. You know, the "Dare to Dream" bit during her presentations? Because all I've seen is more of the same. Even the prospect of opening your own stargates isn't terribly exciting to me. You open new space? Great, you know what it looks like? More of the old space. A big empty room disguised as stars. With a shrinking playerbase I'd say we don't need more empty rooms that can't really be filled with anything worthwhile. So whatever dream I'm supposed to be daring to have, it doesn't sound like a particularly exciting one. |

They sort of have with the changes that are making caps and supers more and more irrelevant. The "end game" for a lot of players is now a Pirate BS, Tengu or Ishtar, all achievable in 6 months.
The real issue is whether they want to focus on churn players (who will play the latest greatest shiniest game for a while then drop it like a hot potato when something newer and shiney comes along) and have a high player turnover rate and profit on the churn or instead build a dedicated player base who want to build characters up over a period of many years.

I believe that the challenge EVE faces is the same challenge I would face introducing someone who was accustomed to fast food to a slow cooker. The food is better and richer and more nutritious, but you have to prepare it and then you have to wait for it. There is an art to it. Once you have mastered the art, it seems as if there is no wait, because you are doing other things while it cooks.
The easiest way to sell someone on the value of slow cooking is to serve them some food made that way--but quickly, because that is what they are accustomed to. If you tell them to wait 4 hours, they will go to a fast food restaurant. |
