As you noticed we partnered up with a new company for streaming EVE TV in an effort to make it better for you guys. During the last Alliance PVP Tourney we basically maxed out so we wanted to ensure that with more viewers we could serve all.
Our partner ran into problems with one of their network partners which caused so many to have re-buffering issues. They are now working hard to fix those issues and we will attempt to use their services again tomorrow, and hopefully those issues will be resolved.
If they don't get resolved then we are ready to hook the EVE TV stream directly onto the net in the same manner as before cause we want you to enjoy watching this. We have put a lot of effort into the broadcast and the last thing we want is for the stream to not work.
Cheers,

Can't you just go back to the old method, anyway? A lot of people don't like browser based stuff, myself included. Makes multitasking a lot harder. ----------

I SOOO MUCH second that.
This way was awful. No more, no less. It was no good.
The other way, will make evetv perfect. The content is SO GREAT. But the streaming(I mean the flash player, ofc.) breaks it kinda much.
Im looking forward to tomorrow. I hope you will make the right descision!

Last time I watched the entire tourney with almost zero lag/issues with a video player I wanted to use. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
This time? Surprised would be an understatement. "Refresh your browser" to fix buffering? suuuuuuuure.

Just stream with mainstream codecs and let the users decide how they want to view it. Sure, charge for the higher bandwidth, but if you are offering the low end, then keep it 'open'.

PLEASE put it back up onto the old system, at least it was reliable + Incidently better quality.
I've missed a whole day of the tornie beceause of the crap flash rubbish. I now don't even stand a chance of seeing it by downloading because other can't record it (or do so as easily) and the first day of the tornie tends to be one of the best with alliance portfolio's and an overview of the tornie :( ------------------------------

But what happens if your new company partner is unable to resolve the problem and some people have paid for the HD version. Are they out of their money?

Thanks for the response, it means alot to know you guys are trying to fix it!
Today it was depressingly aweful. I'm not a fan of browser-based flash video, but if you get it working I can live with it. If it stays sub-quality though, its a failure.......
Summer's method was way better. More user friendly, better quality, better at everything. And EVE TV (the content) kicks ass, it deserves the best! -----------------------------------------------

Last time alot of people asked for a higher res version, even if they had to pay for it. Thus, the hires paid for version. Bandwidth isn't cheap and the basic free version is 256k, the hires 1mb stream is 4 times as much bandwidth. With almost 10k viewers on the opening night (I think, I may be horrifically off on that number) the demand was alot higher than expected.
As you can see, there are various things underway to alleviate the buffering issues, and hopefully this should make it better.
On a related note, what is it about the flash player that people do not like? Please attempt to be specific rather than just shouting out "FLASH SUX!"

It crashes my browser (Firefox 2.0) more than occasionally watching the streams today. I'd stop a stream when I wasn't watching and when I came back to watch I'd refresh the page. Quite a few times I crashed the browser.
But that's nothing really, I had to download and hack your webpage so I could view it fullscreen (save it locally and change the width and height on some areas of the javascript to increase the viewing size). If I had not, I would not have been able to see a thing without being an inch from my monitor (is that the sound of radiation, that buzz like a bug zapper?). And then it looks ugly but I ugly is better than not seeing anything at all I guess.

Well...the sound quality is awful, especially when the music for the trailers was playing. I thought my computer speakers were playing up, but no, it was infact the streaming doing it.
Also, it's much easier to just stick the address into VLC or Winamp and have the screen size perfectly adjustable and not download some flash player to make it run properly. "Refresh your browser to make it work" - what's that about? Just stream it god-dammit and work! I wanna watch some isk get sunk!
Finally, personally I hate to be told what to play stuff in, I don't want to watch it in flash player because it's my only option, I've got VLC and I want to use it plz.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I was happily sitting back in my chair enjoying the commentary and then this pop-up goes "Click continue if you want to continue watching". !?! If I didn't want to watch it, I would close my browser! Had to rush in slow motion to my mouse so I didn't have to go through the pain-staking task of clicking on 'low-quality' again because I can't afford your premium rate of ú1 per hour of random buffering which is a little bit better than the low quality random buffering fest.

Flash DOES suck, and I've got reasons.
1) Horrible video quality, and no true way to get fullscreen mode. The video is often artifacted, and even the "fullscreen" option still leaves the browser bar in the window. Plus, god help you if you go fullscreen on the low quality feed.
2) Horrible video compression. IIRC, you can't use good codecs for the Flash movie playback. That would be one of the reasons they used up their bandwidth - they could get smaller bitrates with no loss in quality if they used non-Flash 'casting!
3) Bad sound quality, as others have mentioned.
4) Stability problems.
For the love of god just go back to the old setup if you can, and wait until you find a good provider for this sort of service before changing. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

The thing that really showed quality wise was that last year im pretty sure you could at least make out the players names/alliance tags... this time it all looks like a blur (or am i going blind?) + stupid buffering + crashes with Firefox + sound quality + artifacts = *** playback

Get ready to for your ENTIRE PLAYERBASE to be unable to watch. All the planning and work for the first day was a total waste for the majority of your viewers... and your planning to do it AGAIN.
Make the old stream an option from the first match on... and drop this browser based non-working software you got scammed into using.

OK, I won't say flash sucks. I will say Flash VIDEO Sucks. Flash was originally designed for vector and image animation, possibly UI mockups as well, but not fullmotion video. Sure it could do it, just not well.
It uses way too much CPU to do what would be better done using a media player.
Based on the words "securely distribute and monetise" on Jalipo's website, it uses DRM. Since almost all DRM requires encryption and decryption somewhere along the stream, it's using even more bandwidth than it actually needs for display.
Based on the reaction to people distributing the torrents of the last Tourney coverage, it seems very odd that it's now much harder for such things to happen.
If someone does manage to get past the DRM, is it now unacceptable to share these videos? |

If someone thinks they (Jopia) stand a chance tomorrow, they are sadly mistaken. More of North American players will have the afternoon to play and watch. I know that is what I am planning to do. So, if they don't get it fixed now, it won't likely get fixed.
Was there ever even a test done to see what they could handle? _______________________________________________

Flash was never designed for streaming video, tbh I've got no idea what the Jalopi guys are smoking, In any case, I'd have to turn it down and pass on.
Even when the streams running perfectly you have 2 choices.. postage stamp or full screen. No middle ground (unless your running a doctored web page... thx whoever put there's up in general discussion.) then you get to video quality.. oh boy. when I tried the trial HD stream (if it was working at all) it was barely up to the quality of the fanfest broadcasts.
There's a reason mpeg and wmv got so good at video, and it's because thats what they were designed for. When I can scale a flash video stream at will in the media player of my choice it will be good enough, till then, please handle these things with asbestos gloves.

People want to watch AND play at the same time, I know I do. Can't do that with a low quality, wobbly audio, rebuffering flash video thingy in a browser window. I would be very much happy to hook on to a stream with VLC player, resize the window to a useful size, place it where I want to have it on my desktop and then continue to play the oh so great game of EVE while I watch.
Thanks for the hard work EVETV guys. Just make sure this watch-in-browser thing goes away!

Ifni, i pointed it out very nicely on IRC yesterday, before evetv began.
1. Its VERY hardly userfriendly. You cant do that much. Sure, you can run fullscreen. But thats about it. Windows media player allows you do run fullscreen, AND have another application focused. With the flash player, this is not possible, as the fullscreen mode stops, when you have another program but your browser focused.
2. The application is made in flash. This needs to be hosted in internet explorer, which tend to have a very heavy footprint. And i dont wanna spend that much screen space. The menu in your browser, aswell as the eve site, takes up space, and arent THAT pretty, over 6 hours, where you are staring at it.
3. It does not allow linux users(Not that i know off) to watch evetv, because theres no implementation of flash, that supports the Jalipo application(Which suck anyways), because it seems very hardcoded, when it checks the flash version. So a part of the userbase is cut off from being able to see it. This is not the case with a raw asx stream, because theres a lot of implementations to understand that.
4. The most basic user, do not have to install flash onto his computer. EVERYBODY(Yes, even people who uninstalled wmp, because it ONLY deletes shortcuts) have some kind of mediaplayer(But people who are stupid enough to buy Windows N), that understands asx. You could host windows media player in the website too, which just takes the wmp to be installed, and it will run like it was that flash application, with less footprint, bugs(Its a bloody beta application) and tears from computer sciencetists crying themself to death when they see people do like this.
5. The platform is hardly bugfree, i noticed decreasing performence on my system, in certain situations, when the application began buffering. Its hosted on top on several layers. First we have IE, which itself, is not like the amount of bugs around javascript(Which is used to call the application, thus the javascript engine is loaded, which is also quite bugged, in ie6 especially). Then theres the flash engine. I dont trust it, niehter like it. Performence is usually very bad. And then you have this beta application, calling down into the other things. Its just nasty, from a computer sciencetists eyes, and does not work well in reallity. The way google did it, was ok. But this is just BAD!!!
You HAVE to understand. Applications are made, for specific reasons. Windows media player, are made for viewing media, and streaming, etc. Flash is made for small fun applications, that are not heavy for the system, or uses large amount of data. The way flash is put to use here, is just hurting my hearth. WMP is made for viewing media, and its damn good at it(SO is winamp and vlc), but flash isn't. Sure, in eve, you can think out of the box with GREAT resulsts, but not when it comes to applications

The flash thing looks wrong. Plus I don't like having to watch a video hooked into my browser, I just want it on media player, like it should have been in the first place instead of going with some company called "Jalopeno" or whatever they are called.
And I don't care if the stream is 256K, the codec is clearly worse than last tournament. It's much jaggier and when someone is talking it's hard to see their mouth moving because the quality is so bad.

Well, I'll try it again today. If it sucks again, I'm going to cry.
Even without the streaming issues, the Jalipo flash player was abysmal. The picture quality was rubbish, it couldn't scale back rather than buffer, the sound quality was rubbish, there was no way of running it in an "always on top" window in the corner like I did with MPC or VLC the previous times.
Please, even if you can fix the buffer problems, just go back to the ASX stream.

well besides that the flash player doesn't run that well on certain desktop, the flashplayer is unable to give the best video quality with a low bitrate.
the flashplayer can handle many different codecs, but the same stream almost always looks way beter in a media player then used in a flash player.
flashplayers are nice for short media clips that don't take that long, but eve is more like real television, and almost then a wmv codec or something like it would be beter. the quality overall is beter and the bandwitdh useage is probally lower aswell.
BTW I'M STILL GLAD YOU GUYS ARE BROADCASTING. !!!For the people that don't know, the first tournament was online broadcasted through eve-radio, eve-tv only just started and I still think they are doing a great job.

This URL may bring the flash player up in the full window (there's no live stream for me to try it on right now):
long url linkified
Once it's there (in its own window), it becomes a lot more like a media player window. No "keep on top" but at least there's no fluff around the action. :D
And You can run this under Linux, too. You just need to install the beta Flash 9 player for Linux. Try here. (Yes, that's running a beta flash object on a beta flash plugin).

Well, for one thing, for whatever reason, i cant run it on my laptop whichis old, and has linux only. Last time, i watched the stream with VLC on said laptop, and it worked fine. Now i can watch it only on my main PC, which is also not very young, and if i try to run eve on that AND the flash stream, both are slideshows. Result, couldnt watch yesterday, but was looking forward to it soo much.

Suggestion:
Don't know if this is in anyway possible. But have CCP ever considered creating an ingame tv function? This worked for other games, such as GTV of quake 3, and HLTV of halflife.
No streaming is necessary. The client just gets data from the "tv broadcast" ingame, while not recieving it's normal data. This has the added benefit of letting clients control the camera themselves, image quality is the same as when you play the game yourself and it uses considerably less bandwidth than a video stream. That way we wouldn't have to pay for decent quality either.
For the audio commentary, the new ingame VOIP might then be a solution.
Anyway, just a thought. /Argyle.

This sounds like a great idea. Could also be used to record in game movies which then can be played back in the client.

i'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but if i'm not wrong the main reason why the flash player is more unstable is because it doesn't take advantage of proper video acceleration, while other media players do.

This is bloody terrible, browser viewing and flash sucks heavily.
I was going to watch, this is just unviewable. If the browser doesn't have focus then it's stuttering all over the place and this is on a powerful PC.
It was much better in media player or winamp. CCP have lost the plot totally, worst idea I've seen.

Ok thanks ccp for getting jalipo to make it more reliable, on the 250K I havent droped out much at all since the start.
However as a note for next time please can we not let this happen next time as Now due to jalipo disablening the 1000k conextion all of us who paid for credits have now lost our money, as the function that they are used for is now not working.
overall NEVER use jalipo again.

Originally by: 4P's As you noticed we partnered up with a new company for streaming EVE TV in an effort to make it better for you guys.
Cheers,

Edited by: xeno calligan on 02/12/2006 17:02:57 Please bring back the direct EVE TV streams:
- No random stops (same problem as Grez)
- No need to get up and press "continue" to keep watching (what were they thinking?
) - Better video quality
- Better sound quality
- We can use our own client software (better UI, not browser based, nice post processing filters)
The flash based client is simply a downgrade in every way.
Direct streams FTW

Makes me feel proud of CCP, EveTV crew and the community. Which in turn makes me sad to see it let down by a third party network problem.
Hope the best, but if all fails, hope the lessons you learned here will benifit you in the next tourny

Templer said it quite well.
By the way, you could see the video in Mozilla SeaMonkey, so I suspect Firefox works, too... I can't be sure, because the stream seems to have decided not to send data to Texas any more.
The more software layers you have between the original content, and the person watching it, the more likely it is that one of those layers will have performance issues. The old "chain is only as strong as the weakest link" saying is still true in software. It is especially true with DRMed, proprietary, beta software with the word "monetise" on the developer's website.
Don't use BETA software in a full-scale production environment. |

We all know you are a business, so stop acting like you are doing us a favor, all you are interested in is how much money you can make from us.
This should have been free from the beginning WITH decent quality...until all the bugs where ironed out then people might have been willing to pay, BUT oh no. (please notice the BETA)
I think we should petition those jailpo(beta) boys and ask them to give up and let ccp go back to the old streaming vid... Look up the email address of their services dept. [email protected] and complain, maybe that will make a difference?

today I got maybe a grand total of 5 minutes of footage, and all of it was "filler". pretty poor showing compaired to how good last time was.

HELLLOOOO CCP ? Are you here ?
They are all busy watching the stream since they have it direct.
Whats goign on is CCP is generating the stream in HD. They are then sending it to this third party, and the third party is breaking it down to a High End Stream (Which I paid for) and a low end stream, which is free.
Now CCP has the direct feed. They have the data, they could just put it out there, they make a CHOICE not to, because they are trying to get some sort of revenue off this.
However, at this very moment Im contacting my bank, pulling the transaction for service not provided.
They could put a direct stream onto the net. They are making a choice not to do so.

Sure thing. Call your bank, say you want a "Charge Back" and state the reason of "Service Not Provided"
They are charging you for a service they are not willing or able to provide.
Its a type of fraud, and you will get your money back and more than 4 or 5 of these gets an investigation from the Merchant Services group of the credit card company. They can get their ability to process and accept Credit Cards pulled over it.

When it comes to watching an EvE Tournament I'm so glad they decided to make us beta testers instead of using a proven format.
Yesterday was 10 sec then buffer then 10 sec then buffer but today was much better cause they save up all that bandwith over time and give you feeds at 30 minute increments. 30 mins work then 30 minutes not working.
Plz Plz bring back last yrs feeds.

They werent "Destined" for anything. They CHOSE this. They had the option for direct feed, 4p said as much.
This was an attempt to monetise the stream, and they have made that choice .

Why doesn't CCP go for a hybride solution? The commercial path they tried clearly isn't capable of dealing with the huge demands, but shutting it down won't be fair to all the people who paid Jalipo. What would be nice to see is the previous ASX streams next to the Jalipo sollution. That way the pressure is taken away from Jalipo and is hopefully enough to give the paid customers what they should get.
And for the record: me not liking flash sollution. Please please stop working with Jalipo as long as the only broadcast technique is Flash. It's nice for short things, you can even use it for RIA toys, but NOT for streaming stuff. It's not made for it and shouldn't be used for it! Use the right tool! -- PR3VIOUS The Flying Daggers Corp

Doesnt matter. They sign a Merchant Agreement with they start to accept credit cards. It binds them.
In this case they are charging for a serviec they cannot or will not provide.
If they dont give you the money back its fraud. If they persist in taking money knowing they cannot provide the service its larceny (theft).
Banks have entire departments built around investigating this, I know because I used to work for such a department.

Lots of preparation went into this by the participants, the whole EvE-TV crew and ccp.
Its a great idea, and could incredibly boost everyone's love for a great game, rewarding all that preparation time and players flying to iceland just for it.
Instead, Jalipo ruins it for everyone, creating anger and frustration.
4P'S its time to take the matter away from that ripoff company that lets ppl buy credits and then doesnt even offer the high quality stream anymore (or any stream for that matter).
Dont let all that dedication be wasted.

I sent Jalipo an email asking for a refund, and I got the following reply:
Quote: On behalf of the Jalipo team weÆd like to apologise for the poor streaming performance over the first two days of the competition. We have been working hard behind the scenes with the Eve team to bring you the best possible experience but unfortunately our streaming partner (a major stream provider) has let us down.
We appreciate that this is an important event for everyone and both the competitors and the Eve team are putting on a great show.
Right now we are working on a number of solutions to ensure reliable streaming for the rest of the tournament. In the meantime we will be refunding anyone that has bought credits.

Is there anyway to get a choice please? I really want to watch it.. but its hard to when the audio is 10 seconds ahead of the video.. or it gets stuck on one spot for 30 seconds trying to buffer.. ;/

Cheers dude, the official stream on the tunein page is a piece of **** just like last week, I guess I was expecting too much when I thought 1 week would be enough to fix it.

Is it me or has the stream completely exploded now? Neither Jalipo or the direct will render at all. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

I can only hope that CCP/Eve TV will compress this to Divx/xvid and put up a torrent since watching that Flash junk is really not doing this great event justice. I had major audio/video sinc issues with at least some of the matches yesterday (and it was a sinc problem that could be counted in minutes, not seconds).
It truelly was funny hearing "Over to the studio" when I still saw 3 ships left for each side in the video.
