As you noticed we partnered up with a new company for streaming EVE TV in an effort to make it better for you guys. During the last Alliance PVP Tourney we basically maxed out so we wanted to ensure that with more viewers we could serve all.
Our partner ran into problems with one of their network partners which caused so many to have re-buffering issues. They are now working hard to fix those issues and we will attempt to use their services again tomorrow, and hopefully those issues will be resolved.
If they don't get resolved then we are ready to hook the EVE TV stream directly onto the net in the same manner as before cause we want you to enjoy watching this. We have put a lot of effort into the broadcast and the last thing we want is for the stream to not work.
Cheers,

Can't you just go back to the old method, anyway? A lot of people don't like browser based stuff, myself included. Makes multitasking a lot harder. ----------

while im sure everyone appreciates the effort being put into providing a service, the browser based streaming sucks. lots.
If it worked in game then itd be worth it, but as it stands it makes eomar a sad bear. ...in accordance with the prophecy |

I SOOO MUCH second that.
This way was awful. No more, no less. It was no good.
The other way, will make evetv perfect. The content is SO GREAT. But the streaming(I mean the flash player, ofc.) breaks it kinda much.
Im looking forward to tomorrow. I hope you will make the right descision!

Edited by: Sevarus James on 01/12/2006 23:21:58 Just an fyi, even if this is "better", as long as its a flash based in browser solution...I'll pass.
Last time I watched the entire tourney with almost zero lag/issues with a video player I wanted to use. Absolutely brilliant stuff.
This time? Surprised would be an understatement. "Refresh your browser" to fix buffering? suuuuuuuure.

Just stream with mainstream codecs and let the users decide how they want to view it. Sure, charge for the higher bandwidth, but if you are offering the low end, then keep it 'open'.

I gave up after the 10th time I lost the stream to buffering. I really hope it's fix for tomorrow. I don't care for the flash player at all though, but i'll live with it if I can enjoy watching the Turny. ------------------------------------- Proud member of G Guild! |

PLEASE put it back up onto the old system, at least it was reliable + Incidently better quality.
I've missed a whole day of the tornie beceause of the crap flash rubbish. I now don't even stand a chance of seeing it by downloading because other can't record it (or do so as easily) and the first day of the tornie tends to be one of the best with alliance portfolio's and an overview of the tornie :( ------------------------------

I know you guys are working to resolve the issue and have prepared your backup plan.
But what happens if your new company partner is unable to resolve the problem and some people have paid for the HD version. Are they out of their money?

Thanks for the response, it means alot to know you guys are trying to fix it!
Today it was depressingly aweful. I'm not a fan of browser-based flash video, but if you get it working I can live with it. If it stays sub-quality though, its a failure.......
Summer's method was way better. More user friendly, better quality, better at everything. And EVE TV (the content) kicks ass, it deserves the best! -----------------------------------------------

Last time alot of people asked for a higher res version, even if they had to pay for it. Thus, the hires paid for version. Bandwidth isn't cheap and the basic free version is 256k, the hires 1mb stream is 4 times as much bandwidth. With almost 10k viewers on the opening night (I think, I may be horrifically off on that number) the demand was alot higher than expected.
As you can see, there are various things underway to alleviate the buffering issues, and hopefully this should make it better.
On a related note, what is it about the flash player that people do not like? Please attempt to be specific rather than just shouting out "FLASH SUX!"

It crashes my browser (Firefox 2.0) more than occasionally watching the streams today. I'd stop a stream when I wasn't watching and when I came back to watch I'd refresh the page. Quite a few times I crashed the browser.
But that's nothing really, I had to download and hack your webpage so I could view it fullscreen (save it locally and change the width and height on some areas of the javascript to increase the viewing size). If I had not, I would not have been able to see a thing without being an inch from my monitor (is that the sound of radiation, that buzz like a bug zapper?). And then it looks ugly but I ugly is better than not seeing anything at all I guess.

Well...the sound quality is awful, especially when the music for the trailers was playing. I thought my computer speakers were playing up, but no, it was infact the streaming doing it.
Also, it's much easier to just stick the address into VLC or Winamp and have the screen size perfectly adjustable and not download some flash player to make it run properly. "Refresh your browser to make it work" - what's that about? Just stream it god-dammit and work! I wanna watch some isk get sunk!
Finally, personally I hate to be told what to play stuff in, I don't want to watch it in flash player because it's my only option, I've got VLC and I want to use it plz.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I was happily sitting back in my chair enjoying the commentary and then this pop-up goes "Click continue if you want to continue watching". !?! If I didn't want to watch it, I would close my browser! Had to rush in slow motion to my mouse so I didn't have to go through the pain-staking task of clicking on 'low-quality' again because I can't afford your premium rate of ú1 per hour of random buffering which is a little bit better than the low quality random buffering fest.

Flash DOES suck, and I've got reasons.
1) Horrible video quality, and no true way to get fullscreen mode. The video is often artifacted, and even the "fullscreen" option still leaves the browser bar in the window. Plus, god help you if you go fullscreen on the low quality feed.
2) Horrible video compression. IIRC, you can't use good codecs for the Flash movie playback. That would be one of the reasons they used up their bandwidth - they could get smaller bitrates with no loss in quality if they used non-Flash 'casting!
3) Bad sound quality, as others have mentioned.
4) Stability problems.
For the love of god just go back to the old setup if you can, and wait until you find a good provider for this sort of service before changing. --- What good are actions if there's no one to tell the tale afterward?...

The thing that really showed quality wise was that last year im pretty sure you could at least make out the players names/alliance tags... this time it all looks like a blur (or am i going blind?) + stupid buffering + crashes with Firefox + sound quality + artifacts = *** playback

5hrs was more than enough time to fix the problem... since it was not fixed... they lose your biz simple as that. The performance today was not good enough lots of people PAID to watch and did not get to. Im sorry but these guys dont get a second chance not after 5 solid hrs of failure.

Your giving them another chance?
Get ready to for your ENTIRE PLAYERBASE to be unable to watch. All the planning and work for the first day was a total waste for the majority of your viewers... and your planning to do it AGAIN.
Make the old stream an option from the first match on... and drop this browser based non-working software you got scammed into using.

OK, I won't say flash sucks. I will say Flash VIDEO Sucks. Flash was originally designed for vector and image animation, possibly UI mockups as well, but not fullmotion video. Sure it could do it, just not well.
It uses way too much CPU to do what would be better done using a media player.
Based on the words "securely distribute and monetise" on Jalipo's website, it uses DRM. Since almost all DRM requires encryption and decryption somewhere along the stream, it's using even more bandwidth than it actually needs for display.
Based on the reaction to people distributing the torrents of the last Tourney coverage, it seems very odd that it's now much harder for such things to happen.
If someone does manage to get past the DRM, is it now unacceptable to share these videos? |
