eve is pretty unplayable for me at times (fleet battles/ most agent missions). it just gets horribly jerky on my good system (core 2 duo system). im hoping that the next generation Eve will run well as i dont think ill be able to find a fix for my bad performance, anyone have any info on when it's likely to appear?

Given Vista's apparent D3D performance in the benchmarking I've seen done locally is ~75% of XP's... don't hold your breath. D3D10 is all about making up the performance drop so it runs at the same speed as DX9 does under XP.
Now, it sounds to me as if you might have a configuration issue, have you posted about THAT on the appropriate forum?

Other thread with related link. Not that fast.
Vista has an easy to use DX10 grafics interface for devs that eats massively into processing speed and because it is fantastic, the sound hardware is mostly useless, leaving more work to the CPU. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

I'd give vista a year before you think about switching to it :P
MS will probably make dx10 for XP a while after the vista rush dies down, they have done it with previous OSs.

Frankly, I don't want it anytime soon...I have a great PC, I can run Quake 4, on unltra settings, 16 AF and 8x AA, and still get around 35-40 FPS. But I can't run EVE on moderate settings and get over 20 FPS in a fight. =\ ---------- I gave up on sigs. As all the beatings are starting to hurt and leave nasty bruises. |

A get the same pain, can anyone explain why eve, even played on a top spec system finds it hard to reach 40fps?

Because it doesn't use the graphics card for anything. It uses the CPU. This is going to be changed with the gfx update so all your Vista whiners will get better fps. -=====-

My computer is ready for Vista, Core 2 an DX10 compatible video card (512mb too), all I need is the dual core optimization that Vista has (and it does have it). I got vista beta right now ant it doesnt yet support my hardware.
I don't have a problem with authority... ...as long as it doesn't get in my way. |

Everyone is talking about Vista update this and Vista update that....what about the graphical update that is supposed to come to the current DX9 client??? When is THAT supposed to be out?

Edited by: Ask Jeeves on 04/12/2006 16:09:29 I dont really care about vista, i havnt bothered to try out the beta yet. But what i think is that they are going to make the graphics actualy work on modern systems. i think this because i read somewhere that they will be designing the engine so that it will work with dual core systems, and make use of peoples expensive graphics cards etc. I guess this will be the same whether you use dx10 or just stick with xp. Maybe ill go with vista for the special dx10 graphics when it happens...
I think that maybe Eve thinks im using a 2.4 gig proc, instead of using 2 x 2.4 gig proc's on my core 2 duo chip(i have the e6600). Therefor maybe it's just as if i have some old 2.4 gig computer, obviously eve doesnt care that i have 2 gig of ram either as it never uses more than 80 or so.
yeah i can also play quake 4 on everything maxed with no problems, same with some other games.
Come on dev's, make it work

because an engine re-design will involve optimisations and newer quicker directx magic (i call it magic because i'm not so great at directx programming at the moment :P ).

I was mildly annoyed when I slotted in my second shiny 7600GT into a SLI slot, only to discover EVE still runs at 35fps.
But, hey, the rest of my games run better now. I hope EVE's new gfx engine will take advantage of SLI.

No idea, in the meantime turn off turrets and effects (Control + alt + shift + E, Control + alt + shift + T) and zoom right out. If that doesn't fix your jerkyness then you've got problems.
Sorry if you know that already.

Even if you have a top of the range graphics card, Eve will probably not run any quicker due to a lack of Synchronisation interfaces in older versions of DirectX. This means that even though your card can chew through 400 frames per second easily (possible), it isn't being fed very efficiently by the CPU and is more than likely spending a lot of time sitting idle. This is probably a hang-up from older client versions (i.e. from when the CGI engine was originally written).
The new engine will more than likely make an effort to keep the graphics card fed and will be able to offload a lot more work to it. As the Eve Client is totally dumb (all the important work goes on at the server), it shouldn't be too difficult to make it more efficient. Of course, this will make no difference whatsoever to "lag", but may reduce "perceived lag", if you see what I mean.

That's on our list of goals, but we'll have to make significant inroads against the CPU bound issues. As to when, I'm only saying "when it's done".

Wait a sec, I'm a GFX n00b, your saying running my PC in SLI doesn't help in EVE? WTF? lol
And what about my dual core processor? ***

Well simply, there are more things to consider than your GFX card. Consider:
If the CPU has to wait for the GPU to complete a render, the CPU is idle. If the GPU has to wait for the CPU to send it some data, the GPU is idle.
Now in the former case, adding more CPU's will have precisely zero effect on your framerate and in the latter case adding quad SLI will have precisely zero effect on your framerate because in either case, one thing has to sit and spin until the other has finished.
Making these two things work in partnership is something of an art.

Eve is older than SLI, and older than consumer dual core. So make your own assumptions. ___________________________________

As for features, I really hope CCP adds hardware accelerated instancing. If implemented properly it would make graphic lag a lot lower in big fleet fights etc.

everything I have read says that EVE has performance issues with dual core/dual proc setups. setting affinity to one core/proc should actually increase performance.
Disabling SLI should also help, if you have not already done so.
EVE is an old game. This gives it alot of positives as far as development and player base. the downsides, shes easy to confuse with fancy hardware.
go easy on the old girl.

It is a known fact tha is it very hard for games to make effective use of multithreading. Also the multitrheading/multi-core hype has only JUST started and most programmers don't know how to effectively handle and program for multiple cores. Especially reprogramming a game to take advantage of it is very very nasty and causes all sort of strange, very hard to solve problems.
SLI is a little easier for the programmer, as that is mainly handled by the videocard driver. _______________________________________________________________________

Their models of the ships and stations leave a lot to be desired in the ways of optimisation imo. Far too many polies, which means more rendering of stuff that most of the time you don't actually notice.
