Once again CCP celebrates a new user peak but are these celebrations really justified when compared to other games which kick afk players.
AFKerÆs should be classed as a problem rather than an easy way to boost peak user limits. The amount of players who sit docked from one downtime to another is ridiculous, Targets who think lets dock up all day and let them camp us as we go to pub. Even afkerÆs sitting at gates all of these add to sever load which in the past few days as been a major problem.
Also with the new ques system for logging on and jumping is made worse by afkers think about the amount of afkers during kali testing or just sitting in Jita day to day.
Of coarse am very interested in knowing why CCP at present donÆt kick afkers so a official response would be great.

Actually, EvE is the most AFK inducing game I ever played. Travelling, mining, shooting down well-tanked battleships, all are AFK activities for me.
Do 5-10 jumps: vacuum the room Do 11-15 jumps: hang up the laundry Do 16-30 jumps: do the dishes (I have a lot)
Many battleships take 2-3 minutes to kill for me, and there's not a single significant decision I can make that affects that time (or my risk) in any way, I'll take the time to browse a website.
There is also now way to speed up or affect a mining cycle in any significant way, and once you've seen you lasers cycle a couple of dozen times, you've seen enough, thus AFK.
Logging in and out means extra hassle for me, and I miss the corp chat in the meantime, which is another negative. If I'm on but afk, I can reread it at when I return.

Maybe they are not afk. Maybe they are ignoring you...
Seems half the people in this game play it docked up in the station chatting in channels...

Thats kinda the point to Eve though.
Games like WoW or EQ kicked AFK players to make additional room for players joining a que. Last I checked when EVE had a que it was during times of extreme load issues and problems.
The standing principal for is all players on one server, all players on one server for as long as they like. --------------

I am not talking about autopilot or miners am talking about people being fully afk not talking in any channels or moving in any shape or form for prolonged periods eg over an hour or more.

I don't see the problem here, if you want to hang at the station so be it. If you don't have time to play but you want to browse around then so be it. Eve is just that.

I pay $15 month to have a connection slot to Tranqulity waiting for me to dial into when I want to (excluding downtime or acts of god). If it gets me off to use that connection I have paid for to sit in a station all day I'm going to do it. It's my 15 dollars. The focus must be on more uber yarrdware rather thank kicking paying customers. That's just bad PR. ---------

Edited by: Plutoinum on 04/12/2006 23:56:03 Well, sometimes I'm semi-afk and just want to follow the chats from time to time escpecially corp chat. For me turning on EVE is like for others letting the tv or radio run, although they are doing something else.

Stop.
EQ never kicked AFK players. (The bazaar, anyone?) Nor did DAoC, nor has any other MMOG I've played. Can't speak for WoW, but it wouldn't surprise me with that game.

I'm there, just not flying around. I'm doing something else at the computer at the same time and I surely won't log off, when I prepare some food. Then I move between kitchen and PC. If supplying me with the chat channels while I sit on the station has such a big impact on EVEs performance, it's time for them to rethink parts of their software.

If you had bothered reading what I said I have no problem with people docked and chatting they are not afk and if they are in the sitution you described it is only for a matter of minutes.

I totally agree. People pay their fee, they can play anyway they like. Sometimes I just sit on a station doing nothing for 2 or 3 hours, just waiting for that sexy voice telling me "skill training complete".

Really? I have only seen it happen the few times I tried to log onto SiSi and then when they first brough Revelations up on Tranq....
I log in every day...different times (Euro peak, US peak), both with character in hi-sec Empire and 0.0.
Apart from the instances described above, I have never once been queued to log in on any of my four accounts.

Are you refering to Gate ques, login ques? If Gate ques thats simply due to the load in the system. I think is the expection to most MMORPGs which simply force you to lag into an area of heavy load, where as Eve makes you wait... then lag.
Originally by: Anatolius EQ never kicked AFK players. (The bazaar, anyone?) Nor did DAoC
As far as I understand now. The most popular servers are kicking people who do nothing after 30 minutes of inactivity during heavy load.
I never spoke about any other mmorpgs. I used WoW and EQ simply because they have been the some of the market leaders over the last 5-8 years of the MMORPG market --------------

Well, not sure about the load, if someone is afk on station. In a high traffic grid in space an afk'er probably causes almost the same load like someone else. I agree to that. Maybe just kick afk'ers from 'overloaded/full' nodes.

<ignorant remark> I doubt an afk player really puts too much stress on the servers. </ignorant rememark>
I enjoy being able to go AFK while I take a shower or goto class... or whatever... cause when I come back I can easily see all the conversations that I've missed, all the people who've tried to contact me, and all the other little post-afk tidbits that make me happy inside.
"The droves of AFK players are causing server performance decrease." If CCP did come out and say something like that I'd understand them changing the policy... but until then I'm sure it's not that big of a deal.

Actually, the devs have stated that when you're docked and afk, you cause next to no load on the servers.
And if Jita causes problems for you... There IS other systems in this game...

this thread makes me laugh - cause I'm an AFK'r. I put Eve on and then work on the other screen. I like to think I could blast off into space in a moments notice - but I dont have the time - instead I work. Kinda silly, but its how I play the game.

Edited by: Dahak2150 on 05/12/2006 02:56:56 To the contrary, AFKers suck up almost no bandwidth. Someone ran a test a while ago that showed being AFK in a station uses but a small fraction of the resources one uses flying around.
So.....stop flying around and causing me to lag. Thanks.

I can confirm that WoW did/does kick afk players. If there is no keystroke/movement for 5 minutes, you lose your connection to the server.
Cue: many more people being tempted and indeed then using third party software to get around this - and cue finding yourself stranded in the wilderness with an oddly twitching Tauren who shuffles slightly to the left every third minute or so.

That's true about the fact that WoW kicks afk-ers, however it isn't a 5 minute cutoff. I play Wow as well as Eve (I enjoy them both... so what ) and it is more like 30 minutes before you are disconnected when afk.
