Originally by: Ruato That suggestion is missing some stuff (how to select drones, drone stats, and so on...)
But fear not, i have better one.
I have many times gone through your suggestion. I just have to say that this idea is not a good improvement. It just gives a very bad twist into drone usage. Examples to why:
1. There is no good way of displaying the drone health bars. ItÆs vitally important to see your drones health bar. If your drones start to take dmg you have to see this and start to scoop them.
2. The grouping of this new UI seams like a project. It gives me a haddock to think of how to group the drones. Worse, what if you have to group them in mid combat? If I lose a drone from that group. In mid combat I have to select drag drop or change this grouping or use a workaround that you suggested. Witch is unnecessary compared to the current system.
The current overview system is very useful in that manner. The only problem with it is that itÆs laggy and itÆs taking up space in overview that can be used for other things. This can easily be resolved by having it removed from overview and placed in a new window by itself.
3. Witch one do you think is easier to program? The entire new redesign of the UI or improvements on the old one. Simpler is always better.
Didnt notice this reply until now, but better late than never... :p
Anyways...
1. I personally dont keep drone hit points visible at all (with current drone UI). But if you want to watch drone HP, why not expand the drone group, its displayed there. It eats way too much space from the overview to display drone condition atm.
2. Actually its no hassle at all. You group drones before you leave the station. And if you want to replace dead drone, simply use oversized groups (put, for example, 8 drones in the group and hit launch again when drone bites the dust). Or select another group and hit launch and drone gets replaced from another group. Or if you only carry one type of drones (for example 10 hammerhead I's), you dont need to group them at all, because ungrouped drones are displayed as separate group.
3. Programming is not an issue here. They already have that bubbly UI in place (modules), they just need to add new bubbles for drone groups and commands and link drone commands to those UI elements.
If you want simpler, all drone commands need to be near eachothers, not in 2 different places and 2 different UI components. 2 separate drone UI components just mean that overview is still as crowded as it ever was, and it just adds unecessary mouse travel when operating the UI. --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

I agree completely with both of you. All I have to add is that no matter what happens, they need to make the commands for both suggestions bindable to keyboard keys.
Technically speaking if the commands (attack/return) were bindable to a hotkey, it wouldn't matter where the buttons were placed on the UI.

/signed (meaning the general fact that drones interface needs dramatic improvement)
But in the meanwhile a big step without too many programing and UI issues, would be to give some grouping management and keyboard shortcuts, still keeping all functions inside the overview as they are. Main point would be to group the drones, so that they'll act as a group unless you specifically select a single one, and giving shortcuts (shift-F1/4) to the drones' functions (launch, engage, orbit, return to bay). I hope the devs will find time to do this, IMHO it would be great! --- --- ---

Drone users need a better interface, i think drones are a main weapon, equal to turrets and missiles. Smartbombs users have better interfaces than drone users!! --

And can they please fix the bugs?
Bug 1) Drones refuse to return and dock. Bug 2) Large drones get stuck on each other and their top speed becoems about 10 m/s. Only way around it is to send one off towards another target, provided you have one available.

The current drone interface is just plain horrible.
If CCP keeps touting Eve has a "sophisticated hardcore" game, then we should be able to have more options for controlling our drones. Or even better, we could actaully have the ability to create basic scripts for our drones. Evolution in Eve:

W/O reading ALL of this thread - I completely agree. Just like the pic, devs, please take as much of the bs out of the overview as you can. It just plain becomes unmanagable with a gang and squad and drones etc.
