There is no right way or wrong way to play this game. Getting involved in the megacorps and 0.0 alliances is one way, being in a small independent empire corp is another.
There are some aspects of both that I like. Which is why I have characters both in a major alliance and in an independent empire industrial corp. I can get the best of both worlds that way.
There is no way to completely avoid PvP but there are ways to minimize your exposure to it, if you're careful. You learn these ways with experience, which you probably have. So I wouldn't fear too much.

More than that I remember when getting to a battleship was the end-all, be-all of EVE ownage and if you arrowed to a battleship neglecting all else it took you a good three months of skilling and and mining to own one (and if you did that likely you were begging to get blown up being barely able to fly it...many a newb ground their butts off to get one ASAP and quit two days later when they lost it).
I also remember the first time I saw an Iteron Mk-V...you almost NEVER saw them. In an odd way strutting around in one was almost more impressive than flying about in a battleship. These days they are all over.
Quote: *The Curse Alliance Stories.
How about the Great Northern War?
Quote: *TankCEO and Dark Cartel ganking all that moved.
TankCEO was the first person to gank me so that brings back memories. This was back in the day of JIP camps.
Quote: *Dual MWD Ships and Frigates with cruise/torp launcers.
Dual MWD? I forget how many a mate managed but he put on all the MWDs he could manage (there was only one size MWD back then) on a Scorp (think he put in 6 but again it has been a long time and I forget exactly). I forget how fast he went but it was like 3,000,000 m/s or more and he was still accelerating when he ran out of cap. Not good for much but was fun to try.
I seem to recall an unbreakable Scorp tank a long time back but again with the vague memory.
Better I liked the bug in the Blackbird that made it fly more like a frigate. I wanted to cry when CCP fixed that (turning it from the most nimble cruiser by far to the most sluggish).

Yea your forgetting Industrials. And Yea getting into a BS was the end of all things, I remember getting into a Cruiser took a while if you wernt lucky enough to join a corp or know someone well off, straight away.

Yes and a good number of them closed and i left the first one when the CEO step down and a new player now owns it. The last one had some sort of error when the main ceo eve time ran out and there was no director to take over.
Great planning still can go verry wrong in the end.

It sounds like the OP is more disenchanted with his corp then the game. If running with a corp makes playing the game feel more like a job then entertainment it might be time to find another corp.

Hehe remember when "Interbus" was going to be the way to get from point A to point B (before shuttles)
Quote: I miss "harvesting" NPC convoys once you were 150km away from the station guns. (Can we please get this one back? Player pirates can gank player haulers...)
Thats where all the harvester mining drones that are still in the game came from. Finding a indy carring Harvest was the T2 lottey of that era.
Remember when you could keep pods, and use them as a destraction for the early Prats by jeting them when you were locked.
Remember being able to fly 5 ships by bouncing from one to another and putting them on follow. Thats how I moved my ships from my base in kub to she back before shuttles. Set the ship to warp then jump to next ship and repeat. If your timing was on you had all your ships jump through the gate if your timing was off you left a few ships back at the last systems gate and because you jumped in to a planet (not gate) you would have to rush back to get your ships through. Docking was the same head all the ships to dock, wait for the accepted prompt and jump to next ship.
But what was really fun was making a bunch of starter ships and station them at a moon, then jump all the ships at the early gate campers and watch them scatter before they realize it was just 1 person in 5 starters not 5 people hitting the gate
Remember early on when we actually had corp wars.
Remember when low sec and 0.0 space only ment bigger NPCs (before the ore was relocated) and the only worry you had was an Wardeq corp.
Remember when the Devs said "Reverse Engineering is in the game if you know where to look" (that was 2 weeks after gold)
remember training for 3 months for the skills to handle a cruser.

Albeit not as old as the 2003-2004 lot. The most i remember is the pod bug where anyones pod looked like a war victim. PoS taking was only capable by BS's (no dreads) Yulai being the main Hub and the FSA - [5] War...ah BSI got a spanking by a frigate fleet. --------

The game is not the same as it was when it was first released for sure, but that's called evolution. Some things I think I miss because of nostalgia, but when I really think about it, things changed because they either weren't working or they were a PITA.
I do remember solo Ninja mining bistot & crokite in a Probe in Empire, and it was a hoot. No such thing as Miner 2's back then either, just the trusty Miner 1. Jet can mining wasn't even invented so you flew each cargobay full back to station (without instas). Not that it mattered - took me 3 months to buy my first cruiser. Couldn't even fly an indy till much later.
Got my 2nd cruiser when I sold 3x 24% cargo expanders for 7.5 mil - thought I was SERIOUSLY RICH. Got all of them from baby, baby rats in Evati (I think) sitting on a gate (amongst the zillions of python & cobra mines they always seemed to drop....). I remember when the mines got removed from the game aswell. People were dropping mines in all sorts of places and totally forgot about them until someone else accidentally found them - then the person who dropped them was immediately flagged and Concord showed up at the most inopportune moments ;)
As someone mentioned, back in the old days, there was only 1 size of AB & MWD. Then the ship sized modules were created. There was also no cap & shield penalty to fitting a MWD. When that got added people like myself would rather fit a 10mn AB on a Rifter - better results and no cap loss :D
Having no autopilot was a serious chore. If you wanted to go anywhere you had to fly to, and activate each gate =/ Glad that got fixed hehe
To the OP, yeah loads of things have changed. No way that everyone is going to be happy with all the changes. That's just the way with evolution. Yes there's people in the world that still wish it was the 60's, but things have moved on ;) Gotta deal with it I'm afraid.
New pilots also have it way easier than the old farts ever did. We killed someone in a Ferox other day who must have been about 2 weeks old - he was even fitting a civvy shield booster (as such he deserved to die imo, if only for that !!). I could never afford anything like that for months. They also have a knowledgebase and helpful pilots in their starter corps to help them. I still have my boxed EVE that I bought from "GAME" when the game first went retail - the manual was out of date on release day. The tutorial was more of "Hi, this is a ship - good luck, bye !". No-one knew what the hell learning skills were for. The aspiring trader who went for a high CHA skill was screwed from the start as trade skills never worked for 2 years. Don't forget they do still have a choice as to how they want to play the game, and no-one is stopping them playing solo. No-one is stopping them joining any size corp they want. If that corp is in an alliance then they can try that out aswell.
Things have moved on m8. In 6 months time we'll all be wondering what all the fuss about instas was ;)

Lol, yeah. I remember in late summer of '04 I picked up an LHC expander as loot from an l3 mission. Sold it for 27mil and thought I was rich. The other day my alt sold an implant for 48mil and I barely noticed :-/ -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

I remeber warping to a gate , and bouncing off thousands of km away.... today ppl get warp-to-0 .. the game evolves.. But the real reason why i still play eve, is its community and players, not the features in the game.

I miss EvE pre-storyline nerf.
When I first started playing, as a member of the Republic Militery School, the Amarr where slaver scum. There would be green text in corp or Minmitar channel 3-4 times a week. My convoy is under attack, I need an escort. Reports of Slavers in blah sytem.
The Crielle labs (spelling?) was on the news. I had progressed to a small industrial corporation and heard about the poor scientists under attack. Everybody I spoke too knew of the battles that ensued.
Skip forward a few years. Every 6 months you get an alliance tournament, that no-body outside the alliance really cares about, where everybody that doesn't have a Major alliance ticker is reffered to as a nooby roleplayer by the hosts.
I have a good bunch of allies right now, we dont claim space, its a small group but we are all friends and fight for what we beleive in. I think Eve as a game is so much better these days. The ships are better balanced, the UI is constantly improving. The new content is enjoyable (salvaging and rigs appeal to my minmitar nature).
I just miss the plot, for it was lost years ago :)

I do not know but i think they still do that from time to time. I remember one day when color text pop up in a system and it was reported to me in our empire chat room about flowers in a ore field ... its nice and all that there is a TV of the PVP contests but it be nice to see again Some clips of the new Invetion system working and may be a cosmos battle 10/10. and have some sort of plot or story to go with the Cosmos that we can click on and read. and why not put back concord agents at there bases ? even if we can not use them its still nice to see a bases with agents at them.
what do you think may be some one for got how to tell storys ?

I agree, there was alot of stuff that made u feel u were part of a very real universe, it still works now and the game is a million times more intresting now, but theres alot can be said about a good storyline in the news that makes u feel theres more going on in this universe than just ascn vs bob. I mean now theres this whole thing where if ur not in a major alliance ur just a noob/neutral that doesnt matter because ur Kill on sight, once they fix the revelations stuff i hope they sit down and come up with some neat ideas to get peple talking about the storys again, like a jove titan showing up in jita for 10 mins before mysteriously dissapearing. I did like the treasure hunt thing they did not so long ago though :) |

Edited by: Gamer4liff on 17/12/2006 05:01:22 As a moderatly "old"(feb 04) player *cough* *cearbear* *cough* I think eve has gotten better rather than worse tbh. There is more content, an easier learning curve, a more intuitive tutorial. And there is plenty of new PvE content, I mean just look at exploration for frak's sake! EvE will never be or head towards "100%" PvP.
EvE is something for everyone, it's a living world.
There is plenty of things to do for us old' non-pvping types. Cosmos, exploration, capship manufacturing, partaking in nutty discussions on ventrillo servers with people on the other side of the globe.
There is pleeeeenty of content.
But yeah it would be funny if they exploded' another jove, I always chuckle about that one.

I've been playing since almost release.. the glory days were not all that we remember them to be, everyone scraping isk to buy those first battleships. I think CCP has done a decent job balancing this game and keeping the older players here and active. Good job so far!
I do have some fears about the future with White Wolf being involved (my characters name is based off a white wolf novels character). In my experience White Wolf hasn't always had the common good in mind they will release material for their Live action role playing games long before its ready rushing the process. Translated into a PC game context this could mean quantity over quality is in store.
An example of the White Wolf culture was when they took over the Camarilla an international non-profit fan club through threat of court action (to make money off that international organization membership).
I suppose that if they help CCP make the board games, and write novels based in the Eve universe that isn't such a bad thing. However, if they start getting involved in the running of CCP I fear their Corporate values will infect our CCP.
We'll have to see if it becomes crap then people will move on to new games. Though there will always be a special place in my heart for Phantomas :P [2006.04.30 19:30:23] Vremaja Idama > For it is by men of action as yourself that we as Intaki will find our way into the future. |
