I reckon the deeper issue that many feel - not just ASCN - is that a game where you consistently warp into an area, find your screen frozen, and then discover you are dead is a) not fun; b) really not fun when many hours you could have been doing something else were put into making the ship you just lost. The Titan loss magnifies this to the point where someone who spent a huge chunk of his life supporting this "world" had to say to himself, "Why am I wasting my time?" Losing the first Titan to non-game technical issues really says something.
If Cyvok had quit after losing his ship in a proper fight, that would be one thing. Seems to me Cyvok just woke up to cold reality. When you spend time in a game to fight the enemy, it is simply no fun and a huge waste of real life to find yourself fighting the technology instead.
Cyvok, you showed that you can build a great organization. Go do that in the real world...less lag.

sick of this game..
shame, I've put almost 4 years of my life into it, for better or worse.
It's my fault for getting too involved, i know, but it makes me sick to see everyone kissing Cy's ass now he's gone, when for the past 2 years this platform has seen him as a joke
bah. - Counter Strike in Space anyone? - cmon who needs an attention span.
The problem is probably that most people don't have the balls to state their opinions on forums (wich is quite funny i think) and just jump bandwagons all the time. The forum "opinions" are usually not representative and it is just not good style to kick a man that lies on the ground so i guess that might be one reason for the asskissing. Eve has not changed, you just got the tough side on it this time. Eve is cruel sometimes and you are experiencing it first hand at the moment. At the same time eve is awsome funny and exciting. This is what makes this game so special. People get very involved with the game and put their hearts and dedication on things that others might destroy in a heartbeat. Sucks to be on the receiving end doesn't it? How many newbs do you think ASCN gatecamps have shot down and ruined thier game and ruined their fun in eve? (i know about 2 lol) It is all a matter of perspective and of course a matter of standing up again after you got kicked to the ground.
So please stop crying and stand up again(ASCN) and do yourself a favour cyvok and find a new purpose in eve (hint: Seleenes offer)
I doubt anyone really wants CYVOK to quite EVE and i sure hope he doesn't because despite me thinking that he is an very poor character, he is part of eve and my opinion doesn't really matter anyways =p

I find it very ironic that spiralJunkie, by posting the link, greatly reinforced one of CYVOKs points for leaving. Oh well. But now - the reason for why so many are taking this so seriously and flaming spiralJunkie, EVE TV, CCP, the High Heavens and everything in between.
ASCN had been taking a lot of flak on EVE TV (more/less than any others, I don't know). EVE TV being a CCP sponsored event it's not a far guess to see Spiral and other producers as closely affiliated with CCP, regardless if they are employees or not. Spiral, by posting the link, suddenly elevates the experienced "CCP-hates-us" factor from "highly unlikely" to "a bit more likely than the previous level". Regardless if Spiral is a CCP employee (Wrangler posted that he isn't, in any way) he is still seen as closely affiliated with them, thus it reflects poorly on both Spirals impartiality and CCP. Which is what people are reacting to.
Now, to the "journalism argument". Nez, if you want to bring in real life arguments defending the post, you need to take in the full spectrum of it. I'm going to use Swedish law for this, but it's applicable in most if not all EU countries. Journalism could be said to have the purpose of spreading information valued by the community in the media, yes. Strangely enough, there are limits to it! (OMG!)
[legal mumbojumbo] First, let's look at the way he got the information to begin with: forum access under a different name (I highly doubt he had access as spiralJunkie) which is illegal, regardless if the access was freely given or given to him by another player with access. There's a big hubbub/criminal investigation going on in Sweden on this particular topic. So, means of getting information illegal = information illegal = post not allowed. Hell, you could potentially go to jail for it under the right circumstances! All you Swedes, check out Dataintrsngslagen.
Second, let's look at the content. You have A., the r/l info, the very personal tone, emotional to ASCN members etc and you have B., the 'newsworthy info'. These two are balanced vs eachother. You say the community has a vested interest in knowing CYVOK is leaving, which is correct, and that anything else doesn't really matter. Well, it does. If the personal integrity of CYVOK is compromised it doesn't matter how much the community cares! Post is still illegal! All you Swedes, check out Expressen vs Persbrandt.
Damn, I just spent waaay to much time typing that. So, my point is this: Journalism can't possibly defend his actions, because journalists have an obligation to stay within boundries. Arguably, Spiral crossed those with a good long step. [/legal mumbojumbo]
That being said, spiralJunkie could've gotten completely off the hook if he just said "ASCNers, I heard CYVOK is leaving. Is that true?" or "CYVOK is leaving! Expect a post from him soon!". But he didn't, and has instead forever tarnished his own impartial reputation and quite possibly the reputation of EVE TV.
Also, would the same reacions have taken place if a generic BoBbit posted the same link, with the same content? I highly doubt it.
Regardless, I think it's really **** poor form to post it to begin with. CYVOK announcing that he is leaving is a right he has earned to make himself since he has forever become a great part of EVE history. EVE is losing a great character with incredible achievements to his name, and we as players are that much poorer without him. He will most definately be missed.
It's just a shame how it all came to this.

Basically whole community has treated him like piece of crap and suddenly when hes leaving its full 180 degrees and everyone suddenly goes "ohh! sad! hug and kisses! we lub you!".
Atleast i would have absolutely NOTHING to say because large majority of this community simply make me sick.
Once the hate bandwagon gets rolling there is no stopping it. A large proportion of the rest of the community simply follow suit because human beings are sheep who like to be associated with success stories.
We all know where this hate was born and they'll continue to take it much too far for a virtual entertainment community. It got personal and thats bad for everyone.
Now to see it all suddenly turn around is shocking to say the least. The instigators of all this abuse know who they are, will they learn? Do they even know what they're doing? Or will they simply use the same "its only a game" excuse we've all come to loathe. Game or not, theres a person behind every avatar and human beings are emotional creatures.
Spiral made a mistake but now pretty much everyone is making a scapegoat out of him too. Hes a person just like CYVOK.
The hate needs to stop.

Cyvok, sad to see you go. You are one of the people that has had a huge impact on the way the game we all play has evolved over the years. I salute you for that.
The truly sad part is the way this news has reached the community. This is more than just posting something off a private forum, this is taking away the opportunity to announce a very important personal decision from Cyvok. I have no respect for anyone that would do something like that, no matter who makes the post. Apologies or no apologies, it just shows what kind of person the OP really is.
The fact that there's a main hiding behind the evetv/radio character only makes it worse.

Noticed a point about lag and WoW in an earlier post, suggesting that we get less lag here. No question, true. I think the difference is that there isn't much to lose in WoW when you experience lag death or sudden crashes (crashes which seem always to come at...interesting moments and never during less interesting ones). Here, you've lost significant blobs of time, enormous amounts in the case of the Titan. Also, Eve's direction has been toward the notion of large fleet battles. So ASCN went that way, trusting that CCP's infrastructure would support it. Nobody in a fleet battle in my memory has experienced anything but game-reality-killing zero-fun-making lag out. Even when you win the battle, it really wasn't all that fun to have won because you got just a little less technology failure than the next guy.
Maybe Eve is just a game for small groups. Given all the server power IBM and CCP have thrown at the problem, maybe MMORPGs in general are more about small groups in big contexts than big numbers in the same location - at least until fundamental issues of client-server/internet are solved.

The resignation of Cyvok was too be expected. How the news was broken is unusual.
I hope Cyvok finds a new interest within EVE he did a great job in creating ASCN.
There are some here that clearly need to remember this is a game.
When the comments start getting personal and hurtful it has gone too far.
Sure passions can run high, remember behind each game character there is a real person who is only playing to have fun.
Walk away from the keyboard if your comments are design to hurt the real person behind the character.

The deal is that some people made up some rumor about spiral receiving paychecks from CCP wich resulted in them believing he is part of CCP wich resulted in them believing its wrong!

For what its worth I'd like to congratulate BoB on winning. It is the irony of winning you'd think you'd get congratulations but since most ppl have a soft spot it happends to be the other way around.
I have a soft spot also so thats why I'd like to congratulate ASCN on a very good effort and CYVOK on putting a figerprint on EVE forever.
Still, this is just a game and the good thing its that you can have as many attempts as you'd like.

I guess this just fosters his decision to go. I'd do the same.
What I've seen of all the propaganda war's on eve-o forums and reports in my own alliance, ASCN have done a more than expected good job in defending their territory and tried to bring the war back to BoB space.
Loosing a Titan is of course a major drawback, but loosing it due to a game mechanic which was only possible during the brief period of two patches (Kali => patch today / probing made easier => probing made more difficult again) would eliminate my motivation too.
So I can understand him and wish him all the best for his future and that he'll get addicted to the game again since I can imagine that he's one of the most valuable assets of ASCN. -----

The very reason i was in ASCN was because i shared Cyvoks take on how cool it would be to have an empire in 0.0 not based on slavery. To have a home far from the bright lights of empire and somewhere we could build a community of friends who all love Scifi and found eve to be elite online.
Now Cyvok has gone its probably the most painful day i have had in eve. i considered him a good friend and tried with all my might to do the bidding of ASCN, we had some great times building an empire but alas my leader is gone.
I know from my time as an ex HC leader of ascn that its a hard job. Being insulted and ridiculed so much, there are times when you simply wonder why people hate you when it is just a game but it happens and ASCN has more than its fair share of insult and venom. Fear of logging on quickly takes over when you know you will have 1-5 evemails from alts calling me ***, fat, whatever. (petition? dont make me laugh)
I dont think there is any reason to victimise SJ for what he did, sure it was insensitive and shows that perhaps hes a little too involved with the game but tbh who cares anymore. Rumours of GMs being actual alliance players and so on is old news now and we all know CCP wont ney CANT do anything about that.
People of Cyvoks vision and ability are not in common supply in eve, most of us want to be told what to do. Not many of the people who play can unite so many people into one group and retain the groups respect. Cyvok didnt fail at anything he did, he made his vision come to life.
Im honestly going to miss him as a player in this forum - but tbh this forum has long lost the sense of this being just a game, the **** throwing is far more fun than being civil and mature. (just like counter strike)
Good luck to Cyvok in his next move, eve is getting to be a dirty place.
