Your chance of winning a BPO with that is 1:(X/500), where X is the total number of research points accumulated by the playerbase in that field of research. Arbitrary example: You have 3571 RP in a field where 8000 other people have each contributed an average of 5000 RP. 5,000 * 8,000 = 40,000,000; 40,003,571 / 3571 = 11,202.344 Your chance of winning in this example is roughly 1 to 11,200. And no, there is no way to figure out the total pool of RP in a given research field. Your only guidance is more RP = higher chance.
