See, there was this GHSC/Ubiqua Seraph thing, then followed by various posts on other game forum sites, usually in the off-topic area. So I tried, and now I'm hooked.

Saw it mentioned in some article about the MMO industry, and looked it up. At that time, it just didn't look interesting to me.
But, I gave it a second look a little later after abandoning CoH (at least for a while), and have been interested ever since.

I bought the CD box game of EVE from Gamestop in the USA in June 2003 and did not load it until i got a new computer in July.
I read the little manual and wow I was impressed. The first bestower was what hooked me.

I was in the beta about 100 years ago, but the content wasn't there for me. Moved on to SWG from EnB, then to WoW, then to DDO, got sick of that real fast, saw an ad for a free trial, now a month later I am still being amazed how far this game has come.

god... must've been the winter of 2000, and I'd just had the come-down from my first game title being released, and had made a mistake, and enrolled on a godawful university course that I really hated. So I was hiding in the university library as much as I could, trawling around the internet.
there was a Screenshot on a games developer forum, and from there did some research, and found a bunch of barking mad maniacs who were making a sci-fi game "a bit like elite, but multiplayer" with graphics which were completely out of this world - everyone thought they had to be faked, because they refused to reveal what their UI was going to look like...
Amazing stuff, so I kept on coming back to the site - they had an "ideas" forum there which I was always gibbering away on.
Six years later, I'm still here. Missed much of beta and the first few months of launch do to no net access - something I still regret.
I'm not so active nowadays, but I'll likely keep lurking until the day Tranquility is shut down once and for all.
(edited: found the first screeny that I saw. ahh memories :)

Article in PC World Iceland back in '98. Then two years later a friend told me about the website. Registered for the forums in October 2000 and I've been here pretty much since then.

Played alot of betas back in the day and this was one of the betas I picked up. I haven't really had a stable internet connection or the time to play but though the years I have kept up to date with thinks and just decided to buy the game for the first time. Beta was cool, I like alot of the improvements since then though :)

Me: saw banner add on http://www.vgcats.com/ and the big "14 day trial" thing. Downloaded the trial and was hooked. It has been around 8 months now and I still enjoy the game. (yay my pic is still a "!")
So yeah, the free trials do work.

Read about it in a game magazine. It stated you could have hundreds of ships fighting against each other. I sued the magazine company and now I am rich.

Co worker talked about 14 of us to try it out. He got ganked by lord Zap...and left the game the next day. I am the last of the 14...They left for the same reason I think..maybe I should'nt of snuck up on that last guy, and blow his indy away. Man was he ****ed, but what could he do I am his boss.....

After leaving Star Wars Galaxies due to rl issues I looked for an opportunity to rejoin but unfortunately I watched the game get destroyed by SOE before I ever got to. So I kept my eyes out for a new space mmorpg. First I came across Vendetta Online, which I played the free trial for but wasn't that impressed with. However someone on the forums mentioned a game called EVE-Online. I found this website about a day or so after Exodus had come out. Unfortunately I still didn't get a chance to play until almost a year later (couple months before Cold War), but of course EVE turned out to be everything I had hoped for and more. However I had to stop playing again and have only recently returned to EVE. Hopefully Ill be able to stay at least on a semi-permanent basis from now on.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I killed things for a living.
Not so much Orcs. Mostly people from Ireland. Sometimes people from Scandanavia. But mostly people from Ireland. You may say what you please about Midgard, but at least they had an ounce of fashion sense.
I defended the realm of Arthur, King of the Britons, long after his passing. And defend it well, I did.
Then suddenly, and without warning, even, I heard a voice in my head. It spake unto me:
"Verily! ROFTLMAO KING ARTHUR LOL ATLANTIS LOL STARGATE FTW!!!!!!!!!1111111 EVERQUEST IS TEH ROXXORZ JOO BOXXORZ!"
A company by the name of Mythic lived up to its own name and introduced the Dark Age of Camelot to Dark Age of Camelot, turning the game from what was the finest example of player vs. player warfare ever devised, into an Everquest-like grindfest.
I stayed anyway. I had no life at the time, and was in college; not yet part of the real world, so I had plenty of time to waste camping pointless mobs for hours on end.
My glorious guild shattered upon Trials of Atlantis. The bloody FOTM Hibernians were grossly overpowered due to the ability to kill a server by placing 2948294829428924 freaking spell-spamming mushrooms everywhere, thanks in part to the l33t, overpowered, no-we-haven't-even-considered-any-numerical-values-when-designing-this-crap gear from ToA. Finally, with people unwilling to repeat the task of spending ten hours a night for a week to go through the Master Level experience a second time (DAoC was previously a very non-grindy game), and me with a variety of characters, I became a leader of men.
Or rather, screaming monkey idiot children, who couldn't even listen to commands like, "STFU! STFU AND LET ME GIVE FREAKING INSTRUCTIONS, YOU BLEEDING, CAPE-WEARING CHILDREN O' HIBERNIAN LOINS!" (This inevitably happened after some moron would run into an area despite being told not to, grabbing aggro, for some insane reason running back, and thus nearly wiping the entire raid.)
I luckily heard about EVE on the MMOG forum of the Catacombs website. Three days later (Downloading the EVE client via modem != fun), I was sitting in an Ibis, next to a small rock of veldspar and saying, "Oh my god, this is awesome, omfg, I'm mining!" to myself repeatedly. Didn't even waste time with a trial.

I signed up for the beta at about it's 5th/6th stage from a link provided from the original Unreal Tournament forums (GT Interactive Forums), which then the vast majority of the users moved to Tournament.com, because of a personnel change, and then later we all once again moved to The GTFRC (Refugee Camp), because the domain was bought out by someone apparently making some sort of Half-Life deathmatch game.
Anyways, I played the beta, and despite there being no ships except starter ships, no economy, all ore having the same volume, I knew this game had potential. When the game went live, I was too young to pay for the subscription. I came back around 18 months ago, took a few breaks due to money shortages and still having an interest in WoW. I really liked to PvP, and I just got fed up with how meaningless WoW's PvP was. I've been here ever since (Almost a year without a break in subscription, and have a second account).

I used to read all the stories published on the boards far before beta started and was very much intrigued by those stories. Very thrilling content of a universe so different from everything else I had seen in game content that I was hooked on reading whatever was on the website.
However because there was a real long wait for actual gameplay, started actively playing Earth and Beyond and loved it. Then of course E&B got killed by the  EA overlords and went back to EVE before the dawn of E&B.
Lots of players from E&B came over at that time and most have stayed on in EVE. Eve is just everything in terms of complexity and depth that was lacking in E&B. E&B had a lot more actual 'arcade' feel to it, but one gets used to that part as well in a couple of months.
So, been back here ever since and loving it.

Never heard of it before then. Never played an mmo before.
I wonder how much better my career would be going if I'd just not gone to the store that day...

However your situation isnt as bad as mine....Not only do i think how my career would be, but also my SP count, seeing as how i left eve in its early days for SWG

Had a gaming magazine that i had finished reading, thought i'd read everything of interest in it so i put it aside ready to throw away and was bored while downloading a file and i had nothing to do while it was downloading. So I picked up the magazine and tried to find the best of the articles i hadn't considered worth reading, and read a review on Eve online (game was only a year old back then.) It sounded interesting so i got the free trial but i'd also bought Final Fantasy XI.
Fully expecting the trial of Eve to be not great and just something to tide me over until FFXI arrived through the mail.
Well it turned out FFXI was rubbish and Eve was amazing, so i swtiched my sub right over to Eve and the fun commenced. I've since had breaks playin Eve and tried other MMO's and not a single one of them compares all rounded to Eve even nearly.

Heard about eve in the egosoft forums - was a X2 player. Never heard of a MMORPG before that. Checked out the eve-online forum - looked good - downloaded client, and since then am totally hooked.

I came across the original "Great Scam" story The great scam [www.mostlyharmful.net] and was intrigued by how deep the game sounded. I downloaded the trial and played for a few days, but the EQ2 came out and I forgot about eve for 9 months or so.
Once the novelty of EQ2 wore off though, I jumped back into Eve and have been here full-time ever since.

After a year and a half in Earth & Beyond - loved it - I took a short break, came back to find sunset and my Guild fled to Eve.
So I took a longer summer break and then tried the next nearest thing, knowing only the early rumors that it was mining again in a vast and empty universe.
Those reviewers, hack and slayers the lot of them, hadn't even noticed Trading. Nor indeed had most Eve pilots, with minimal competition it was easy pickings in them days.
