Hi All, Been playing Eve for about 4 months now and this is my first real attempt at playing a MMORPG (played Guildwars, but thats not the same). My first reactions were amazement and awe at the sheer scope of the gameplay available. Now despite a few technical hitches here and there and the sometimes laggy play, I've had a great time playing this Sci-Fi feast of a game. I like the fact that you stand to lose a great deal in assets/Isk if you don't take precautions, a feature which is one of the games most endearing qualities I believe. So Far so good right. This is where things get confusing for me, cos I read the forums and am amazed at the number of idiotic responses from so called intelligent people, *****ing and whining about every aspect of the game. For sure there are people with genuine technical problems and they can get damn annoying. What I can't understand is the down right shameful comments some people make towards other players and especially CCP. The game mechanics are very complex and are tweaked now and again in response to genuine issues regarding game play balancing. No game is gonna be perfect and considering how ambitious the Eve project is, I think CCP have done a grand job of delivering a masterpiece of online gaming. What worries me is that the complainers which seem to engulf these forums make up the majority of players online. If so, I'm not sure I wanna continue playing this game, cos it's the players that make or break online gaming for me and if this is the norm for MMORPGs, I think ill stick to LAN gaming. A real shame considering the quality of this game.

EVE has by far the most intelligent community of (major) MMORPGs.
If you honestly think that the forums here are bad, you really need to try out the World of Warcraft forums or the like, where even the "intelligent posts" are worse than the worst you'd find here.
At least in EVE, most of the whines are pretty well-written!

Welcome to the internets
The forums are a minority of players, and most people's forum posts are unlike how they are ingame.
Most people don't read the forums, and, of those who do, most don't post.
I'd get on with enjoying a great game and not worry about it

Eve is awesome and yes, the whining exists on all MMOs I have tried. Sorry but thats about it.
But never forget that the ppl that like the game are less likely to come here and be vocal about how good everything is.

1. Yes, they all are.
2. If everything is good your too busy playing the game to go on the forums and complain. If it's bad you have spare time.
3. Whiners make up most of the forums, not most of the game, because most people are happy with the balance, you don't come on the forums if your happy, like I said. ------

Yes. By and large, people think paying $X per month makes them a member of the board, and having used a keyboard once makes them not only an expert programmer, but a veritable master of a codebase that they've never possibly experienced in any way. The forums of every MMOG are filled with such nonsense.
My advice? Play the game. Ignore the forums.

Offtopic: What's with the sig? What happened to spiral?
Ontopic: Gaming forums are always bad for people complaining about games, because it's the main method of bulk communications with fellow players. MMO forums are worse, because of the commitment and subsequent attachment to one's characters. Issues which affect people are usually felt more.
Just keep in mind, not everyone who plays EVE even uses the forums. So the vocal minority comment by someone is somewhat valid in that regard. :)

Don't quit playing, quit reading the forums. The vast majority of players never post here and certainly are not reflected in the extreme positions demonstrated here so often.

all forums are full of whines, some legit, some just ridiculous. 80% of general and and a few other channesl is pure rubbish.
That said Eve's community is about 100% better than almost any other community. I can think of a few other games with great communities as well, but they are also smaller games like eve.
If you love eve...dont read the main forums. The RP forums and out of pod is better example of the community as are some of the open chat channels.
The forums do not represent the majority of players.

Compared to other online communities, EVE is by far the best IMHO. People that would never do so in real life seem to be much more vocal than they would otherwise be. This can be good (ideas that would otherwise never see the light of day) and bad (the whining). ----------------------------- EVE Addict, creator of the EVE Online Forms Greasemonkey Script \o/ |

In all things, balance. Just as in life, I have done some intelligent things and some stupid things; so forum posting goes.
However, a lot of posters here also post while they are at work (for instance) - or when they have a particular problem or gripe. It's like our coffee break at work - always some discussion, often not politically correct, often rude - but it's honest.

Heh. You should see VN boards. I swear there's people there that play the DAoC and WoW general boards more than they actually play those games.

EVE is probably one of the better MMO's with the exception of the alliance and corp discussion. The BS that goes on there is worse then the WoW boards. An example of how bad it is, ive seen various BoB/ASCN threads linked on alot of non EVE related boards. The people laugh at it and think everyone is like it (like what we do with WoW). If you avoid that forum (and this after patch day) its usually pretty good.

Quote: What worries me is that the complainers which seem to engulf these forums make up the majority of players online.
Forums are a vocal minority And, generally, the primary reason people make a forum post is to complain. So it makes sense that most of the things you're reading are...complaints. Your post in itself is a complaint if you think about it
As for 'are all MMORPGS like this' - no, I would say eve is unique in it's scope, gameplay, community etc. But if you meant 'Do all MMORPGs have whiners on their forums' urhm, yes. And by no means the worst, at least we have coherent bitterness
As for the people you encounter while you're actually playing, it's pot luck. The eve community is pretty varied, especially as it's on one server, so you have people from all ages, genders, nationalities etc...I've been pretty lucky in who I've countered.
A warning though, the school (npc) corporation you start of in is not representative of the community at large, just as the forum isn't.

Reminder, please do bring up locked threads. Keep to the orginal posters question and debate/discuss constructively.
One of the great things about Eve is you can discuss and the majority can come in here to present their case. Often time the minority on an issue will be heard as well.
The Nighthawk is a great example of the community getting together to discuss the issues surrounding the ship and bringing those issues to CCP in a constructive way.

Given that particular topic, depending on the day of the week and the alignment of the stars, the thread could quickly turn into another omg...fire spiral thread.
Yeah its not as much as a hijack as say start talking about the fastest way to chill a beer. Which by the way I just read on the interweb that by adding salt to ice and water in a cooler will increase cooling by 50% on top of the 50% increase in cooling you get from just adding the water.

I would agree whole-heartedly with this. Most of us also come from other MMO's, and other games you could describe as "LAN games". Those communities are much more vicious. Heck, most online communities/forums in general are quite unpleasant after a while.
I don't know what it is about the internet that makes many of it's denizens so cranky. Yes, people will say stupid things. Yes, there are many annoying children and narrow-minded fools. Still doesn't seem right how eventually, every message board has breakdowns into insults and fighting words as though everyone was in a grade school playground. That's the net for you.

Well, I think since you are just a player character here and not really yourself, you can act the way you want to act without it having much negative impact. In fact, some people even become known in the Eve universe simply because they annoy others so much.
