Greetings! Following the recent release of our critically acclaimed EvE Online: Carebear Upgrade (CU) we'd like to take this opportunity to brief you on our up and coming expansion: EvE Online: New Game Experience (NGE).
Pre-CU there were players capable of entering other players quest areas. These players were pirates using an item called 'Recon Probes'. After listening to the needs of our players, it was decided that this was an unfair situation. These pirates were then made unable to enter players mission areas, and peace was restored. Other methods of pirate control were also implemented, such as 'Warp to zero', 'Hitpoint Boost' and other well needed fixes.
We're continuing this tradition with the NGE expansion. Pirates have been allowed to exist in dedicated PvP arenas only. Any attempted aggression not within one of these arenas cannot occur, as all offensive modules are disabled upon exiting the arena. We're confident all players will welcome this change.
The most adventurous change made in the NGE expansion is our redefined combat system. many players felt that many nuances of space combat, such as transversal velocity and tracking were off putting and detracted from the game experience. We have with this thought in mind completely revamped the way combat in EvE is handled.
The old variables that players were finding difficult to manage have been removed. They are as follows:
Many other variables may also be removed as testing progresses.
The new combat system will be replaced by a 'Player Independent Probability Calculation System', codenamed: 'Dice'. The prototype for this new system, tested on the ECM modules of Pre-CU, and later improved in the CU expansion itself, was welcomed by both veterans and new players alike. We hope the combat improvements will be equally loved.
The way combat will now occur is that when two ships occupy the same grid and both agree to combat, the following happens: Each ship has a turn to fire each gun. Upon a roll of the 'Dice', a result from 1-6 will occur (we originally wanted 1-9 but technical limitations prevent this). A result of 1-3 will result in that scan probe, er.. we mean 'gun' scoring a hit, a result of 4-6 will result in a miss. The combat will continue until one of the players reaches a pre-determined level of damage, whereupon all weapons will be disabled. The winning player will gain 'experience points' and the losing player will have to pay to repair his damage.
The probability of rolling favourable numbers can be altered by training certain skills, such as:
- Dice Recognition - Allows use of weapons systems controlled by the 'Dice' system. Prevents mistaking of other cube shaped objects, (ie Sugar Cubes) being mistaken for 'Dice' items.
- Wrist Co-ordination - Improves 'Dice' system calculation speed by 3% per level.
- Tactical Dice Manipulation - Uses ships warp computer to improve probability calculations. 6% boost to chances to roll a result of 1-3 per level.
We felt that this new skillpoint based system should be the determining factor in any battle. Many older players complained about being beaten by younger players, simply because they had the out of game skills necessary to alter the old speed, distance and tracking based system in their favour. The NGE system will ensure that players who have shown loyalty by playing EvE for many years will reap the rewards.
Downtime will be minimised during the upgrade so remember to set a long skill training, especially because skillpoints are now so much more important than experience. ----------- Join channel 'ExScape' or die! Me too, I heard enough to give the SWG guys a giggle though. I just really hate chance based systems. Pre-kali probing was a mind exercise worthy of spending the time to master. Now you're repeatedly rolling a dice, waiting for your lucky result. The old system was balanced. You never had mass carebear whinage about probers (well, no more than usual) and you never had mass pirate whinage about the difficulty. It was hard and quite rightly so, because in the right hands a scan probe launcher was bloody lethal. The new system's just a nerf to allow the 'bears to enjoy exploration, which has had the unfortunate side effect of screwing recon probing all to hell.
It's a sad day for sneaky ninja probers.

Slow forum day, ISD? :) Jeebus.
I like the idea of roll-based EVE. The logical extension is to bring the same concept to Local chat, providing more structure and better grammar to smack.
Current:
"I pwned j00r ship, coem back and let me pod u"
CU Improved:
*roll* "I'm going to" *roll" "warp to a" *roll* "safespot and" *roll* "log off because I am" *roll* "horny."
Everyone has a chance of winning AND losing, thus we have attained balance. On a possibly unrelated side note, I believe my venti marble-mochaccino has just kicked in. Wiiiii!

I am totally against this new expansion
I want to carebear and therefore feel that if I enter the arena to carry out peaceful PVE I shouldnt be penalised by having the same odds as those who have invested time in gaining the skills needed to use DICE
therefore I propose all those with a sec rating below 0.0 should have a 3 sided Dice with the numbers 1-3 on them
all us with a sec rating over 0.0 should have the usual 6 numbers, but due to the possible probabilty of us throwing a low number we get 2 goes and the results added together
The above keeps the current status quo

I was happy with the old system. It only had one problem, and that was the disc, rather than sphere shaped scanning area. That alone was the sole problem with it.
As far it not being possible to make me happy, that's true. There isn't an icicle in hells chance of ccp changing the current system in favour of the old one. In that sense you're right. Eventually they'll get an adequate balance on this chance based system to allow everyone to be reasonably happy but it'll still be Dice Roll Online.

Hey, pirates need to have fun too, so shouldn't the expansion also include a system that forces a destroyed ship's pilot to write a praising eve-mail to his/her killer, praising the killer's awesome combat talents and the victim's utter helplessness before such might ? That way pirates too would get better satisfaction for their achievements :)

I did like the old system, in that when you broke a safespot there was a sense of achievement. Majorly annoying to be stuck within 1.5au of a target, and repeatedly running scans with 3AU and 10AU probes, and getting nothing - because it was offplane, and there was no way to get an offplane safe in that system for me.
Now they've changed it all, just as I worked out a way of reliably busting offplane safes in my home systems

As for the actual topic: Its not about easy versus hard. Its about fun versus lame. Right now, noone can really tell what the system is like. But if i understand it correctly, its pure chance (just 1/100 as likely as before). Which means statistics. Which means it may be brute-force-able in acceptable time given enough resources.
So pre-Kali, only the skilled cov-ops pilots could find things.
Maybe it will turn out that you just need 10 cov-ops (which can be controlled by 1-2 players since scanning doesnt seem to be all that involving now) to totally ruin someones day ... statistically guaranteed result, effort = time spent in front of the computer tabbing through clients hitting a button.

Pre-CU rocked, CU was decent (though it sucked until i saw what the NGE was like )
CU was decent? No, no it wasn't. I was a MDoc [or training towards] from the day Shadowfire went online to the day CU came out, then I gave away my resources [including my coveted LWW and 997/998 tubers ] and closed my accounts. If you played CU, you understand why it completely ruined the game for me.
I'm still looking forward to a decent Pre-CU emulated server.

Truly a sad day when griefers can no longer inflict their "bad day" on others.

It's not enough. If we can't resurrect our ships I'm not playing any more. Also all combat in high-sec should be non-lethal. Missiles should be replaced by pom-pom launchers, lasers with flashlights, hybrids & blasters should be fire those little foam rubber pellets and artillery should just have those little flags that come out the end of the gun with the word 'Bang' written on them (autocannons get 2 flags, both with the word 'Dakka' on them).

He cannot hear it. He is currently running 10 accounts with cov-ops alts to scan down and grief carebears, and for that, he had to turn off the sound. That, and he isnt at the computer, since you dont really need to pay attention to grief people these days.

Short version: "waaaahh"
more specifically: "dice" has been running under the hood of the whole EVE combat since day 1. Funnily enough the one aspect of it where that doesn't really apply (missile damage) is the one thing people repeatedly ***** about as 'boring' and 'not requiring any skill'
but by all means, keep crying :s

this game isnt about being fair, theres a certain element of risk and if people who didnt want to fight were able to make themselves invunerable to pirates (as it seems to be happening) then you have something called Consensual PVP (read: WoW) ----------- vids: Terrorseries Turbulance |

I like the new scan system. Set up camp, kill anything thats not blue, if it hides, scan it out in 40 seconds or so. Kill...
Yep, works for me.
