I just had a look at the alliance discussions thread (I'll be posting my own thread there in a moment wheich will be flamed but I dont gove a crap, its not like I'll be reading there again) And I have a couple of thoughts..
There have been multiple threads about such and such happening on christmass day. Killing poses and another about how "gatecamping is not how I want to spend christmass day" I mean, hello? What is this? This is a sodding computer game. if your forced to sit down and play this on that day their is something seriously wrong here. If the red alliance killed poses on christmass day that would be accused of breaking game mechanics or low play or something. The local big male member alliance does it and they get commended for their dedication and balls. Hello? Both people are compleatly sad. People that log onto the server on christmass day should be pitied not commended. I'm stunned people are even concidering it. I'm going to be spending the day away from the computer. Hell I dont particularly like my family but I'm going to be spending the day with them anyway. If the addiction factor is so high that you need to be on here on that day then there is something compleatly wrong here. It either the game that is too addictive or its the peoson that has allowed himself to be sucked in here. Probably both. And frankly if that the case then you need to look at yourself and the game becasue this is just silly.
I know this will fall compleatly on deaf ears. but if 2 people actually look into their souls and think.. "You know maybe if I go into town and sit down and look at people playing christmas carols or just take in the atmosphere, it might actually be a nice thing to do. Might feel good." then this post with the adentent enevitable flames will be worth it.
If ccp wants to give people a christmass present then shut down the server for 24 hours. put a time freeze on it so everything is as it would be on christmass day and they people can stare at their screens and but heads all they want. But not on christmass day FFS.
And I'm saying this to myself becasue I've come to realise Eve has too much of a hold on me, so its something I'm trying desperatly to say to myself. Hense me staying with my family (who are *******s) but it will be a good thing to do.

Edited by: Johnny Twoshoe on 24/12/2006 04:39:14 There are plenty of EVE players who, for one reason or another, do not observe Christmas. Why should they suffer (IE: shutting down the server as you suggested)?
I do agree, however, that scheduling ops on Christmas day is a bit... what's the word? Iffy? Even if the players which will participate don't observe Christmas. What's worse is that some people will (I'm sure) forgo any sort of Christmas festivities, even those they might have enjoyed with their families (!), in order to play EVE and be their for their alliances.
Imagine a child and his mother sitting near a warm fire and a tall, decorated Christmas tree. Imagine that these two people will not be able to enjoy this Christmas with their father/husband simply because the man decided to play EVE Online instead of celebrate Christmas with his family.
Sad thoughts.
On a side note, you will be in my prayers concerning your EVE addiction (that's not to say I don't have my own problems.)

Some of us don't celebrate christmas, so what would be the point of shutting down the server as a "present"?

I have an idea what if you got every 1 in your family on a free 14 day free trial in EVE and celebrated thru the game!!!!, just kidding. Ya, some people do seriously need to look at the bigger picture.

I'll actually answer that one. No, I dont know what is good for anyone else, but I do know that sitting in front of a computer screen playing a virtual game on christmass cannot be good for you.
Yes not everyone celebrates christmas. I certanly do not (at least in the classic way, as in buying presents and all that rot) but you know it exists, and what it symbolises. For people to remain locked into their virtual world on this day draws a line for me. I think it kind of woke me up. Frankly I understand why people would spend all day at their computer and thats what woke me up becasue I know damn well its not good for me. And I cant think of any disorder where it would actually be a benefit for. Probably someone somewhere would benefit, but that would be a unique case. Most peopel will lose a bit of themselves. I've been involved on the internet for over 10 years and I have seen people get very hurt with far less addictions than this
I know I'm going to be in eve withdrawl in christmass day. Thats why I am going to be cooking the christmass deserts and a lot of the dinner stuff to keep busy. If I have to go through that concoiusly, how many other people are thinking "Ahh christmass is rot anyway, lets play eve." It is crossing the line and it hurts you.
I felt I had to say something and at least I have done that much. And thank you for the constructive posts so far, everyone.

I'll actually answer that one. I dont know what is good for anyone else, but I do knwo that sitting in fromt of a computer screen on christmass cannot be good for you. Again, your opinions are not those of everyone else. To me, Christmas is just crass commercialism and the true meaning of Christmas (whatever it is, I dont know exactly) is pretty much lost on everyone. Hanging out with your friends, eating a nice dinner, and hey maybe even giving some gifts, that sounds perfectly fine to me, but it shouldn't take some once a year holiday for people to feel that the have to do it. People (or at least I) do these things all the time (friends food relationships parties family etc etc), and hey guess what, I play EVE too!
Now i dont know much about serious addiction, especially video game addiction. However I can tell that making a thread along the lines of "Hey all u guys who play eve too much yo get a life n stuff and go celebrate birth of jesus christ i mean come on ur wasting ur life lolz" is probably the worst possible way to start a discussion on it.
What people do with their lives is up to them entirely, and consequences of their actions (good or bad) are something they have to deal with. If someone needs serious help in their life (addiction for example), then they need serious focused help from someone who knows what they're doing, not some kid on a forum saying "video games = bad, jesus = good"

Edited by: Himo Amasacia on 24/12/2006 05:31:35 So when did I mention Jesus, exactly? If you think I'm on some kind of evangelical recruitment drive you have seriously missread my post.
I'm talking about priorities. Eve is a computer game. A good one, but a computer game. At the end of the day all the killmails and all the veldspar and all the talk will fade away and mean zip. One day eve will shut down. Its inevitable. Those guys you are talking to on TS? Unless you are very very lucky, you will neve hear from them again. Someone leaves your corp or alliance, even if you were best buds you will be lucky if you hear from them twice before they vanish into the mists. Thats the reality of the internet. The interaction is too hazy for it to be otherwise. It requires your own mind to fill in the blanks. And thats the danger. Its seductive becasue half the time you are filling in the blanks yourself with what you want to see.
Addiction is not a small thing that happens overnight. its a series of steps and choices that are made. You have to make the steps. Logging on to a computer game at christmass is one such step and a big one. Yes christmass is a commercial nightmare, but deep down in everyone there is a little voice that says it isn't.. I dont know how to say it properly. but even for you the day is marked. Playing on that day is a step on the road. You are choseing eve to be a greater priority than the real life stuff that you know is going on around you on christmass day. And frankly this is disasterous. You are blocking out the world that little bit harder and pushing yourself down the road more on that day.
Jesus has about as much to do with it as Khrishna.

I'll prove it strue the same way you can prove it isn't, you cant, and its a lazy way of arguing to keep asking the person to try.
Anyway, I'll take my own advice, turn off the computer and cook myself a stirfry. I've made my attempt and people can make of it what they will. However you chose to celebrate it or not at all, have a good day everyone. Peace.

There was a nice bit on the History Channel about the orgins of the x-mas celebration. Very interesting. Noone should feel guilty about skipping the day, there's 364 others you can spend with your family, and if people need brainwashing from corporations to spend time with the family, then there's a problem there.

And... Why should I care about christmas at all? To tell you the truth, I don't care about this holiday - it annoys the hell out of me. I don't like cristmas music. I don't like the commercial aspect of it. I don't like not being able to stock up on groceries on December 25. I am not religious, and I am annoyed by the fact that this religious holiday is being observed by the orders of a nominally secular government of my nominally free country. Yes, I have been working today, and I will be going to work tomorrow (not because of money, but because I can, and I like my work). Yes, I will play EVE on christmas, and my corp will have an op scheduled. Nobody here is making you play against your will.

Some facts:
- Not every single EvE player is a christian and some just do not celebrate stuff inc christmass. You assumed differently or just forgot that all online games are world-wide so I "forgive" you hehe becouse your point is valid , you just used Christmass as an example or a "wake-up-call" as you said it.. I got it.
- Online gaming is the "plague" of the 21st century and anyone that claims differently should be slaped silly.
- We live in some ****y weird times where people would rather escape in some virtual world then deal with the real-life issues and problems that are just piling up it seems as the time goes by. Today`s way of life or whatever is just too demanding on people , there are not enough hours in the day to get everything that is expected of you done , let alone have some free time for yourself. So many c.r.a.c.k
- I`ve been playing online games for 3+ years now and in that time I`ve seen or heard of at least a dozen of divorces mainly caused by exessive gaming.
- There is most likely a double-digit number of psyhological disorders that you can slap on the online gamers. Who is to blame for this ? I dunno but its starting to get ridiculous when people are choosing to keep playing games even on such an important day/holiday/tradition for some as christmass.
- I would have made a much beter post in my own language instead of English. :)
- Peace

Point; Some people as said may not observe christmas as part of their religion, and I KNOW you aren't going to try and force it on someone else.
Point; Some people still have to work on christmas or they may well lose their jobs or equally nasty stuff.
Point; Some people may not have family or friends around when/where they are to spend christmas with.
Point; I suggest you think before you open your cakehole.
My point; I have the 2nd and 3rd problem mentioned here and as such will log in and play eve as a way of relaxing after work/ before work on/ over christmas. Do yxou have any suggestions to make what you just said a reality considering these points laid out here. It may just not be choice that they are alone over christmas, so they may aswell spend it relaxing if they can. Lets see if my sig can survive this round of *****ing

Let's see i care a **** about christmas, mostly due i dislike and almost hate all religious, festivity as i "personally" consider like stupid human lie (but i respect the belief on that)
On all this time i use to run a tradition for xmas, so i end such days within my family or my friends, also i keep almost ever connected, oh im a freak and sad guy then??
not really i not see any trouble at all stay at home, while online in a game sit somewhere in space chatting with online friends(and wishing them happy Xmas), also speaking with family or friends in the house or just playing the game because on that moment i have nothing better to do. It's certainly not only about Christmas. ALthough the OP stresses the day of Christmas, to me it extends so much further. Tomorrow night i will have family in my home that will have traveled far and wide. My extended family is all over the world and something like Christmas is one of the few times we get to see each other face to face and share stories and gifts in an intimate setting. There is no way in hell I'm going to go upstairs, away from the party, away from my family, to play Eve Online no matter how good a game it is and no matter if my POSes are being attacked by an enemy Dread fleet. But, for me, this isn't only a Christmas time thing. I would hope that all people who play this game give their family and friends priority over Eve no matter the day, be it holy or not. The next time any one in this community is sitting at their computer doing whatever it is you do in Eve and you get a phone call from your friend or brother or sister or mom or dad--anyone you care about pick it up. Teamspeak can wait and it's ok to let your barge's cargo fill up, making your lasers turn off and missing a cycle. Ask your friend what's up and how he or she is doing, maybe even do something together if it's an option.
and for anyone who wants to reply to me and say "I don't have any friends and I hate my family" then it would be best to log off and address these real problems and reflect on why you feel this way. Addiction in any form can hurt a lot of people and if you're really truly addicted to the game to the point where you sacrifice work, school, family and friends for that "important" fleet op, on a regular basis, and you honestly find that you can't control yourself, please don't be afraid to ask for help or to admit that maybe there is a problem.

Hi,
What makes "christmas" a day other than any day of the year I am not religous and the mass consumption of these day annoys the hell out of me (lights tons of food). Am I suppossed to celebrate that i have a lot while most of the world lives in poverty.
I am not gonna let a relegious/commercial day dictate when i should see my family and friend I see them when I want to and can. I and and not You decide what has value in my life.
To summarize as no day in the year is christmas for me every day is. Why should I spent money for something I do and feel all year round.

Most of people in Red are Russians, and we do not celebrate X-mas on 25 of December. Our X-mas is in January. So why should they think about their enemy's holidays? Also, you shouldn't bother if they do kill - you were the first to say 'it's just a game' %)

This christian sides with this. I am a christian and my partner is an atheist. Would be nonsense to push my faith on him. Besides that. Christmas for the most is about expensive food and presents. Leaving all those who are living from little money outside the christmas joy. Thats not what it was supposed to be religiously.
Our countries have freedom of religion wich to often gets used by religious folk to push their ideas on others. About time the atheists get the right of freedom from religion instead of getting it forced on them.
So to all who celebrate .. Have a merry christmas. And to the pagans. Happy Yule and sorry for stealing your day cause it fitted so nicely with the birthstory of Jesus. To the jews happy Chanuka. To the moslims enjoy this periode leading toward Eid ul-Adha. And to the atheist all I can say is .. Have fun doing something you like on this free day off from work and school.

I really like my family.
I really like good food.
I really like presents.
Why should I not get to have all four things on especially this day? One does not preclude the other.

It is so refreshing to hear from a Christian that doesn't think we all got wiped out four centuries ago. Thank you. In the spirit of your message I wish you a Merry Christmas.
I would happily debate that Yule became the Christian celebration of the birth of Christ as many early missions to Pagan lands found themselves isolated for long periods. Many Christian customs have a strong undercurrent of Paganism behind them. In most cases I suspect it was just pragmatic for early Christians to allow a religious melting pot to occur.
For instance Christians originally used the fish as their symbol. The crucifix appears to have become popular after the missionaries reached Norse and Saxon lands. There the Odin story was well known. Odin hung for nine days and nights on Yggrasil, the world tree if you will. Wounded in the flank by his own spear. During the trial he stole the mysteries and knowledge of the runes from the gods and gave them to man. You should be able to find it in detail in a translation of The Prose Edda. Needless to say the similarities between Odin on Yggrasil and the modern story of Christ on the cross are obvious.
Christmas and the midwinter festival of Yule we have covered. Another one is Easter. It takes it's name from the fertility goddess Eostre. It was a time of planting and.... sowing wild oats . Lets just say the Easter egg hunt is symbolic of another tradition. No doubt the festivals message of death and rebirth (death of winter, birth of new life in spring) fitted well with the story of Christ's execution and ascention.
Many years ago an old aquaintance of mine studying these things told me that combined with Arabic stellar observations at the time and Roman records of the Bethlehem census it puts Christs birthday sometime around September by the modern calander. Unfortunatly my aquaintance died may years ago and I have no idea where they got all this from.
I think one of the few festivals not adopted by the Christians is Halloween. We call it Sam'hain and it marks the begining of a new year.
Plenty of food for thought and no need to apologise. There are many of us us but not enough anymore. If it were not for so many Christian holidays being at the same time as Pagan festivals I'd have to keep taking annual leave to celebrate them.

Not everyone has the luxury of a family to hang out with, or friends who are always there for them. Dont presume that we all have something better to do.
P.S Can you believe that cr@cker is filtered?

Im NOT gonna play today or tomorrow BUT I dont like to see eve shut down for ANY religious reason. Havent we got enough religious influence in our society, do we have to bring it into a pc game aswell? No thx.
(...yes I do like to go downtown, watch ppl, see animals run around, breathe the fresh air and all that crap, but I choose to do it any day i like...)
This christian sides with this. I am a christian and my partner is an atheist. Would be nonsense to push my faith on him. Besides that. Christmas for the most is about expensive food and presents. Leaving all those who are living from little money outside the christmas joy. Thats not what it was supposed to be religiously.

Well said. I wish there were more believers like you. I have nothing against peoples beliefs. Saying "You should belive this or you should not belive" is like telling someone what to think.
And to the OP: What do you propose people to do on christmas eve/day if they dont celebrate it? Cant go to movies, they are closed. Cant see your friends, they all with their families. You cant really do much else then play eve...and as someone stated above, you can spend time with love ones and do non-eve stuff every other day of the year aswell.

regardless of what you choose to call the next week, whether its business as usual or the one time a year your family & freinds gather (I dont care about the religious significance but the chance to see all my family). No one here can dictate the choices you make and if it were my choice to spend some of tomorrow on eve, that is mine to make, not yours. CCP are not here either to dictate what we do outside the game. They are here to provide a service which we pay for 365 days of the year (therabouts).
Let people enjoy the holidays, whatever that means to them, not to you.

I don't know how you came to that conclusion, I am a pagan. Born and raised. Hence my response to Quinverre wishing us pagans a happy Yule.
I am indeed in a role play alliance, even before that I have always been a roleplayer in Eve. Indeed the Amarr are a monotheastic faith. The funny part being I got an invite to play Eve from a mate and he said "roll Minmatar" so I did. Having been a punk in my youth and liking the gear head description of the Sebiestor I rolled a Sebie. The rest came after. Had he said "roll Amarr" I could just have easily ended up purifying the heathens with holy fire.
Anyway, not sure about the point of your post. Just felt the need to clear up the misunderstanding. I am not Christian.
Merry Christmas.

I spent most of the day with family, and decided to play some EVE after dinner when everyone buggered off :D It's either that or watch TV, and there ain't nothing on, so I might as well go enjoy myself with some random killing.
Funny though, my gang got b*tched out because we killed a guy on xmas day, I mean, dude.. just because it's christmas doesn't mean I suddenly decide to stop killing stuff.

I think spending christmas with your family is important, but for some christmas can be lonely or they do not believe in christmas, people must respect the persons choice of freewill. Those who are the minority may enjoy playing with like minded people.
Way things going, tradition is going out the window, we are moving on and christmas will be celebrated in a different context.
Also think of this the future family may sit around an lcd and play eve as a family. People who play eve now will have children and they will want to play.

Heh, well... I spent a good 12 hours socialising with my and my partner's families, and still managed to find time to log into WoW (I KNOW! LEAVE ME ALONE!) to pick up my Xmas goodies, and Eve to flick over a skill.
My girl would kill me if I spent hours over Christmas playing, but she's quite happy for me to play when there aren't family things to do, so (shrug) no complaints. :-)

Good man!! no need to apologise. I was confused and like your self drunk.
For the record I spent xmas day feasting then once the rug rats were all tucked up me and the missus butchered a load of Stormtroopers in Battlefront II.
Then today was spent cleaning, playing with chalk and felt monsters, squeezing boxes into a wheelie bin, playing with Dora the Explorers Kitchen whatsit.. you get the idea.
Now it's time to ***** open that bottle of vintage port I got and load Eve.
Bottom line in all of this, your family / religious obligations are your own. If you want to play Eve over xmas then so be it. No need to justify it to anyone here. If you log into Eve though, remember it's business as usual.
