I know that there's a profession of "salvaging", where one tracks down wrecks and gets the Good Stuff(TM) out.
I can troll roid belts, and hope the right wrecks are there but ...
On my Directional Scanner I see other wrecks -- lots of them -- but I can't warp to them. Nor can I scan them down with probes, it would appear.
How, please do I get to them ? Other[people obviously know -- do I need to pay the salvager equivalent of James for a special module ?

Are you using combat probes? Not sure if you can scan wrecks, never tried, mostly people scan down mtu's.
Or, join Pro Synergy and do it legitimately.

You either combat scan down the MTU or you can combat scan down drones left behind. Best thing to do is to attach yourself to a L4 mission runner and ask to loot and salvage his wrecks for half of it. Some of the times, they will agree to it since it is a bit of isk extra that they don't have to worry about and you get something in the process. That is how I started my Eve career, salvaging behind a guy that shared standings with me while I cleaned up behind him.

TY, but I DNK any L4 missioners, and I gather that, anyway, L4 missions are where griefers hang out and I am sure that someone salvaging would be an eminent target for them to garner their diet of carebear tears.

You don't have to know them, just ask in local chat if anyone is interested in having you salvage their level 4 mission.
The reason level 4 mission runners are targeted by "griefers" is because a lot of them run their missions in very expensive battleships. This means there is a potential for profit and killboard padding if they can bait the mission runner into attacking them. They won't be interested in your salvage ship, unless they're desperate.

You sit outside of a level 4 mission station. You use combat scan probes and you get the ID of a mission running ship. Dont pick a marauder. You ignore other signatures on your scanner and you scan down the mission runner in the mission. you wait til they leave the room and salvage it.

Before I could fly a BS, I joined a corp where I would follow a fleet to mission and then loot and salvage. Different corps run differently with regards to this. I have been part of corps that split all of the loot and salvage equally between the players that were fleeted up; others allowed the looter/salvager to keep everything for themselves.
Personally, I like the splitting the ISK, but that's just me.
In my experience, it seems pretty common to have two or three players run the mission and one or two looters/salvagers. Typically in a Drake; sometimes a Noctis, but I don't see those as much any more.

This is the same reason many players will be reluctant to let you into their fleet or tag along on missions to salvage. I'm not suggesting this will always be the case, just that there's not a lot of trust amongst players.

The threat of being ganked in high-sec is vastly over-rated if you are careful in a handful of dangerous systems (system hubs, uedama, etc). Get out there a fly around. Just stay out of low-sec until you learn how to be stealthy. Eventually you'll learn that being ganked is exciting on the rare chance it happens provided you're flying something you can afford to lose.
Unfortunately, ninja looting is mostly a relic of Eve's past. If you found some guides for new players they are probably from several years ago. There are good suggestions above if you want to do some legit salvaging in mission hubs -- pro synergy, asking in local.

Most mission runners, like myself, will tend to simply ignore you should you appear in someone's mission pocket. It's more or less good practice for them to do that anyways, just in case you happen to be there for more nefarious reasons that just the loot the rats drop.
I even sent rep drones on one guy because the entire room stopped shooting at me and started shooting at him. What can I say? Just seemed like letting him get smoked by the rats would have been bad karma. Beyond that, I tend to pay no mind to someone landing on grid.
As others have pointed out, Mobile Tractor Units are a good indicator of a mission site. Many of the various battleships available to players are another. Just make sure you keep an eye on the runner, if there are still rats alive. If he bails, intentionally or not, the rats may target you next.

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

Yes, if it's just one or two guys trying to bait you into attacking them, its fine to just ignore them and keep on going. If, however, you see local spike with lots of gankers (who you should have on your contacts list) then its time to get yourself docked up.

I think you are a bit overly worried about some 'griefers' popping up in a mission. Unless you do something stupid like attacking them in your PvE boat they are harmless. It is also very easy to troll them in a mission by destroying the loot/wrecks they try to take. Keep an eay on local chat, if you see suspects in local constantly then thats probably ninja looter popping up in missions. |

Thank you all.
Clearly the "profession" has now been unionized into specific corps, and is no longer a starter.
I shall have to go back to lurking in station and reading about all the kills that griefers have made against my local carebears.

The others have handled the how and where to get to wrecks so I have a few related tips.
The use of a salvage beam is legal on any wreck anywhere in EvE and there is nothing that anyone can do about it. And if they do then they will get the Concord visit for attacking you. Looting a wreck, or trying to lock a tractor beam onto it is considered stealing and would give the wreck owner kill rights on you so no looting just to be safe.
I do know a few rather un-savory characters that offer the loot to players like you and then kill them when they take stuff. To prevent this see above on salvage only or simply ask the mission runner to abandon (blue) his wrecks.
If you are in a fleet with the mission runner then the wrecks belong to the fleet and anyone in the fleet has complete and legal access to those wrecks. And the answer is yes this applies even if you are not in the same corp as the others in the fleet.

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe you only get a suspect flag for stealing a yellow loot container (not a kill right).

Arthur Aihaken wrote:Unless I'm mistaken, I believe you only get a suspect flag for stealing a yellow loot container (not a kill right). Your are correct about the suspect timer but you are dead wrong about the kill rights.
Suspect Timer
Only applicable in Empire-owned space (0.1 to 1.0), the Suspect Flag allows any other player to attack you without penalty for the duration of the timer. CONCORD and gate guns will not defend you, and the attacker will not receive a reduction in Security Standings. The Suspect flag lasts for 15 minutes, and actions that will activate the flag differ depending on the Security Status of the solar system. Pod killing a capsuleer with an active Suspect Timer will not result in security status loss or CONCORD response.
In high-security space, you can acquire a Suspect flag by stealing from a container or wreck, and by providing a remote assistance to other players in possession of an active Suspect Flag, Criminal Flag or Limited Engagement, or players who have Outlaw status (have -5 Security Status or lower). You can also be given a Suspect flag if a player activates a kill right on you.
In low-security space, targeting a player's ship (not their capsule) with any offensive module, including Smartbombs and other non-targeted weapons, will provoke a Suspect flag. Stealing from a container will also provoke the flag, though assisting outlaw players in low security space will not.

Noted that you are technically correct on the kill rights issue. However in a practical sense it makes no difference if they steal from you they open themselves to being killed by anyone who wants to try.
And you need to read the linked page. For stealing you do not receive a "limited engagement" timer you get a suspect flag and those are 15 minutes in duration not 5. |
