For me the numbers were sad we reached 5.5k at best moment i think, at the begining of the game on normal weekends it was 5.8k .
I really thought this would work.
I think it shows how small numbers of players read this forum. As a inforamtion for an event to all players its range proves to be very limited.

ok wait...maybe you dont realise exactly how many people that is....ill spell it out FIVE THOUSAND people were online at once.
Thats just the weekend players and a minority of the weekday players.
This thing was a success a good one too. Lets do another one in 3 months and watch what happens...

I'm kinda dissapointed also. I know eve-radio had ALOT more activity, but hardly anyone (besides that people that log on anyways) logged on for "The BIG Log-on". _________________________________________________________

Edited by: Jolo on 08/12/2003 04:56:58 don't 4-5 normally play on sunday? and on top of that, it was in the news for days and all over the forums, and i'm sure people who don't read the forums did hear it from others.
This was bad because there isn't that many people playing. Everyone I've ever met in eve play eve on the weekends and on the weekdays, so don't tell me that it was because a huge number of "weekday" players didn't get the message or couldn't log in.
Lets get serious. ---------------------------------------

Well another fact besides other players have different habitual login days are also timezones.
For example the Aussies havent been able to until the game was avalible for download.
So wait a few months and try it again. -------------------------- Vist the Jericho Fraction Forums

Snuh? I am an Aussie and that wasn't the problem. The problem was it was Monday freaking morning when you planned it. I am not skipping work to log onto a game to break a world record. Unless your paying me for it
Maybe a different day would of been better to do it -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Yep, same issue here. No way I'm going to a) get up at 5:30am to play a game, and b) miss a day's work.
Go the timezones :)

There are 30 thousand or so total accounts according to CCP. Of those, figure a third or so are duplicates (since about half the players seem to run 2 accounts). That means over 5900 (the peak was just under 6k) people out of about 20 thousand actual players, or 30% of the player base logged on at once. That's not bad at all, especially for a Sunday night / Monday morning (prime sleep and work times). To actually hit 10k we'd have needed half the total player base (or a lot of people logging in their 2nd accounts too), which is really not likely...
I could be wrong about 10,000 of the total accounts being alts, but I see so many people talking about having 2nd (or 3rd) accounts that I doubt it. But once we get the Tech 2 launch and world-wide distribution thanks to the downloadable client, that 10k record is going to happen.

With my time zone, count me out. The big log on occurs when I will be in school and I'm not going to sacrifice my grades for this.

Another thing that might have gone wrong is the time frame, If we got everyone to log on at say 8pm for 10mins then we probably would of had alot more people make the effort, i mean asking someone to log on for 4 hours is a bit much if they've got stuff to do. We probably did have ALOT of players log for a little while then log off.

You should read the dev post in this thread. There ARE that many players. To me it seems there were several factors that contributed to the numbers being the way they were:
-not that many players read the forum -the news item didn't mention what time this event was going on. -for people in places like Australia it was already Monday -some people purposly didn't want to participate for one reason or another -the time span of 4 hours was a little broad -despite all that was said and done, many of the more casual players never knew about it
Though we did not make the goal we set out to, we did have a larger turnout than some past weekends and I am personally impressed that the folks from CCP supported a community/player-driven idea so fully. I missed the part of the Eve-radio show where Pann was reading player emails but I did here TomB and his "hidden" collection of Eve music. Very nice.

Nonsensical; you're discounting the duplicates from the total player base, but you're counting every account that was logged in as a separate person. Anyone who was actually trying to help in this effort, had all of their duplicates logged in at the same time (me, for instance).
In fact, given that it's mostly the highly-active players who have duplicates (bad enough paying one monthly fee for something you don't play much, but multiples?) and it was mostly the highly-active players who were there .. I'd bet close to half of the total online were alts.

The last time we hd 5500 people playing was 49 days ago. So I don't think it was a huge failure.
It's just no longer the same as when we reached 6300 because at that time everybody was still playng 23/7 --- soonÖ |

Well, with the current playerbase developement it could very well be that in a few month we would see 3800 players as huge sucess

You're forgetting some of us aren't going to log in to help out a game that we've pretty much given up on.
If we boost EVE's PR it still doesn't fix the problmsm we've had with the game over the last 6 months since launch.
I'm not going to log in just to boost a game that I'm just clinging on to until my sub runs out.
When I started playing, I recommended this game to loads of people, we all played it for a couple of months or more. But now, after so many problems, bugs and design flaws that haven't been fixed, It's not worth the effort.
Even if it is improving, CCP have squandered away my goodwill and enthusiasm, I'm not giving it another chance, it's had too many already.
Also, yes, as others have pointed out 5.5k is POOR. 2 to 3 months ago, we got this EVERY week, even with laggy servers and chronic stuck issues. All this log in managed was an extra 1k players over the declining normal usage. -- Britannia Futures

Edited by: svetlana on 08/12/2003 11:35:13 There are a lot of different opinions and discussions about this, but if you take a step back and look at the numbers objectively you shouldn't feel too disapointed.
What we saw was pretty much the same turnout as any other sunday. The slight increase in numbers was due to players who could satisfy each of these criteria: 1) knew/cared about the event 2) were in the right timezone to hit peaktime 3) don't normally log in on sunday (people who normally play sunday wouldn't effect the number at all since they are already counted in all the previous sunday numbers)
1) People who come here to read the forums are a small and hardcore portion of the playerbase, it often feels like the same 30 people (and a few exclamation marks;)all yelling at each other over and over
I think most players (casual gamers) barely have enough spare time to play a computer game, so they don't go trolling about on the web afterward.
The CCP news item on the event was only posted for 1 day in my timezone, so there isn't really an argument there. most folks don't play everyday like we do (hardcore forum readers/ flamers). And even if they did read the item, the majority casual gamer is not likely to take time out of his/her day to log in at an inconvenient time. they are called casual gamers because they do not rate gameplaying as a very high priority in life <gasp>
2) where you live, can't help that.
3) Think about this-- the fact that i logged in with all my accounts for the event would not increase the numbers at all, since every sunday i always have those same accounts logged in. that would go for many of the hardcore players too i imagine. so if you take into account that mainly the hardcore players would even help out in this event, then it is amazing that the number went up at all-- in theory, it shouldn't have. you guys must have a hella lot of alts you don't normally log in
Since the numbers were close to normal, that doesn't show a lack of interest in the game or event. But what it does illustrate is a good lesson about how few casual-gamers read forums, how small any hardcore playerbase is, and the folks who love this game are logged in all the previous sundays as well.

Edited by: Durandal on 08/12/2003 10:23:19 I think there are a few things that need to be pointed out here:
1. This was not a 'stunt' by CCP to promote eve for xmas...it was organised by players
2. Not everyone knew the time to log on (and even if they did 4 hrs is too big a time window)
3. A Sunday night, as had been pointed out, meant early Monday morning for a lot of people who could not be expected to logon
4. The weekends tend to be quieter anyway and not everyone reads the boards (Sunday is traditionally the quietest day by a long way in my corp - 1/3 the usual number)
5. Of course there was going to be more people 3months ago - it was the summer holidays for most. Unfortunately I have hardly played all Oct, Nov and Dec (thankyou CCP for offline skill training) due to my final year in university (dissertations etc)and I know for a fact that this has kept a large number of players (friends ingame) away from eve or any other online game for that matter. Back in June, July and August I was almost never logged out of eve so its not surprising the numbers were up at 5-6k.
So 5.5k is still good, especially on a weekend in the run up to xmas - it was in prime time for shopping in the US!!
There, I feel better for that

Durandal:
1. It may not have been by CCP, but it's still a stunt to put a false gloss on an ailing game.
2. Sundays are ALWAYS the busiest nights on EVE. Don't try blaming it on weekends being quiet because 6 months of stats disagree with you.
3. Summer peak? Oh please! I was here as numbers fell in July and August and everyone said. "Don't worry, it's Summer, people play more in Winter." -- Britannia Futures

Edited by: Kor Loshman on 08/12/2003 11:05:25 Many good things have been said. This "event" if so to call was a success however we look at it. the curve maxed at 5592, which is 2 less than the www.eve-i.com 3 month record (5594) so i'm not really sure why everyone says that we are going to a 5.6K every sunday... since it's 2 less than 3 months ago.
CCP didn't do anything to support this, unless you count this piece of news that didn't have anything in it except the date.
Many people don't read the forums. I personally read it, but many times i've skipped threads, due to boring flame wars (which in some cases are just dull) And i think many people that start out in this game, come to the forums and don't really like what they see, like Svetlana said, they are casual gamers.
5.6K people online at the same time is good. I had hoped for 6K but the time window was just too big. Many people don't have time time on sunday night to stay for those 4 hours. I was on from 1600-0300 game time and exams don't stop me from mining while reading biology
But i think there was a good turnout and i saw it everywhere that many people turned up, people that don't come all the time, are casual gamers. Many people have mentioned their buddy list, and 1 person was online most of the time in my list.
But now with new distributions of EVE (online) we will see people all over the world flock into the world, people that have not been able to find the game, unless on websites selling them which is good, but many people don't have the option, or the websites don't ship them outside their country etc. This will hopefully expand the playerbase as long with some good PR from CCP. We always need new people. and yesterday proved that we have a strong playerbase (even though many people here flame about their end of subscribtion) we still have active 5.6K players at one given time. and averagly we have about 3.5K at all times. which i personally think is good.
It was great and let's make another day like this (preferably saturday) soon.

I don't see how anyone would think that this could work. There are 3.5-5k ppl online at most. More realistic would be "Let's brake 6000" or "Let's brake 7000". This dissapointment was bound to happen, with all the players leaving EVE. Hopefully the future will hold the logon with 5 digits _______________________________ Wake up and smell the coffee... |

Told ya. In the evening Europe time there is around 4-5k players tops. In the morning when I hit the work, 12 hours later, there is around 2k players. All together 7k. Rough estimate which showed incorrect since the real player base is far under 4k. Eve has potenitial but so did I have 10 years ago and look at me now - looser playing some online games ______

EVE is a nitch MMO, it always will be. (as many people said it would be when the game was released b4 it was completed)
Unfortunately, for the market to work properly, we need 4X the numbers of players we have now, something that will NEVER happen, it's too late for that now.
CCP has to make major changes to scale down this game to make it work with the current number of subscribers...
