Would someone be able to help me? I have a grand plan but have no idea what I am doing. I think this game is better played with others. I am trying to choose a ship. I want something big but pretty that can do a little of everything I guess? I cant afford a carrier yet but I want to aim for one I think. In m races ship tree. I don't want a slave ship lol I don't know what to get :( or how to make enough monies lol. |

A couple of things:
A. Bigger =/= Better B. Read the golden rules I wrote, a specialized ship >>> a jack-of-all-trades ship. Sorry, but a ship that can do a little bit of everything will suck at all those things. 1 ship = 1 job = 1 activity. If you want to PvP, grab a PvP ship. For missions grab a mission fitted ship. For mining, a miner etc. etc. C. A carrier might look like a nice ship, but you are far of from flying one as a new player. Minimum skills =/= the ability to properly fly it.
And yes, EVE is best played with a group. So find yourself a group to fly with.
Be it a community based group or an actual corporation that you join.

Ships are tools in this game. First you need to decide what job that you want to accomplish then you can figure out what ship would be good for that.
Carriers can not be flown in high sec currently. Also they are big and slow. Further they have very little use outside of PvP. And they are getting revamped this summer or spring with an expansion set to change capital ships.
I would focus more on learning the game. If you decide at somepoint that you'd like a carrier to do something with then get one. However I think once that you see how big and slow battleships are you might second guess flying a cap. |

Not to mention that ANY capital is a fleet ship.
A solo capital is just a nice juicy target if you don't have any back up to help you.

Tiffany Hope wrote:I am trying to choose a ship. I want something big but pretty that can do a little of everything I guess? In Minmatar races ship tree. I don't want a slave ship.
Don't just pick a ship. Pick a progression of ships. There are some ships that are versatile, like the Rifter frigate, Rupture or Vexor cruisers, Dominix battleship, but they can't do "everything". They have evenly spread out slots (between high, medium, and low), so you can fit either armor or shield defenses, or PVP, or extra damage, and their weapon systems are versatile (drones, especially, as you can pick and choose what drones you use), but the name of the game is to min-max the ship bonuses to match your task.
So you'll need:
- An industrial transport ship, so you can move loot around. Most ships have 3-400 m3 space, specialized transports and freighters are the only ones that can get 10,000 - 50,000 - 300,000 m3 of space.
- A number of combat ships; the bigger you go the slower they are and the more you have to rely on actual defenses (armor, shields) rather than being nimble.
- Special purpose - scouts that can cloak (cov-ops frigates), ships with sensor and probing bonuses (so you can probe down and find exploration sites), mining ships (if you're into that).
- PVP specific ships - electronic jamming, remote repair, interceptors, interdictors - depends on what the needs are for the group you're hanging out with.
How to achieve it:
Buy skills from the market and train them. Skills can be categorized as follows:
- ship skills (in the Spaceship Command category) - unlock ships for you.
- weapon skills (Gunnery, Missiles, Drones) - train the weapons for the ships you've chosen. Minmatar ships, for example, use projectile weapons (small, medium, or large to match the ship size), missiles, and the larger ships use some drones for defense against smaller ships.
- support skills (Armor, Shields, Navigation, Targeting, Engineering, etc.) - these make all your ships perform better; clearly every ship will benefit from more armor, more shields, faster speed, more power, etc.
- non-combat skills (Trade, Social, Corporation, Industry, Reprocessing, etc.) - train as needed, for the side activities you're interested in.
Making money:
Most of the player-vs-environment PVE can make you money. It's recommended you go find the career agents and do missions for them because they'll shower you with about 10 million ISK worth of ships and skills, as well as teach you the game a little.
After that, you can do missions for cash and loot, you can explore (for hidden loot), you can lay down some Planetary Industry facilities (for product to sell for cash), you can mine (boring, don't do it), you can try your hand at trading (buy low sell high), or manufacture common things like ammo, missiles for sale. You can try to scam people, you can try to get them to give you gifts of money for ships (begging is an art form), you can infiltrate a corp and steal their stuff, or you can just join a newbie-friendly corp and they'll probably give you free stuff to get you started.
You can also buy a PLEX with RL cash (from the EVE Account Management website) and sell it on the market in Jita (go to Jita first, then redeem it, don't travel with PLEX in your cargo), and that'll set you up for a long while. People do this because the activities in game become tedious and more like work after a while, and it's simply easier to just work a RL job and pay 20 EUR for a PLEX; it takes about a month of daily effort to make the equivalent 1 billion ISK through in-game activities.
Slave ships:
If you read through the lore here, you'll see that ships do have crews. But since the ships will be yours, you can (roleplay/pretend to) crew them with paid crewmembers rather than slaves, even the Amarr-manufactured ships. |

Yea. Even though I like to Roleplay an Amarr slaver. Lore wise Emperess Jamil outlawed slavery and was trying to make peace with Minmatar. Ships have crews, but they are strictly lore/rp. They have zero effect on gameplay because when you assemble the ship it is autocrewed. I think the sigil is the only ship with the flavor text saying something to the order of "use to be used as a slave ship" I like the sigil, so I sorta ran with the flavor text and made it a major part of my RP.
Drone ships are the most flexible. I don't hyper-specialize like most players do, but I can say that there are too many roles that a ship can perform to be even mediocre at all of them. But a ship can sometimes be fit to perform two or three functions at an adequate level. Especially drone ships which can store multiple flights, and multiple types of drones. If flexibility is your thing, then I highly recommend drone ships, which Amarr and Gallante generally have most drone ships.
A Carrier is a future goal, but a carrier is also a primary target. The number one rule of eve is don't fly what you can't afford to lose. So for now you'll be flying frigates and learning basic game mechanics. That way when you lose your frigates it won't hurt much.

To reiterate an important point ... ships are just tools and expendables. What you do is, choose a task, profession you want to perform, and then select and skill for the suitable ship. There are some ships more versatile than others, which means they can be fitted in different ways efficiently to perform different tasks. Also it can be fun to fit a ship for something else than it is supposed to be used in order to surprise potential opponents.

coolies :)
So I need to make money so I can fly big ships and afford to replace them if someone blows them up.
I like the Gallente ships the most so I would like them. Just sad about the colour choices :( I know it doesn't affect the performance or anything but if the ship is a representation of me I want something nice lol.
I am noticing there is a lot of politics in this game as well from what I've been reading. That's is going to be hard to understand. And then it seems all these different groups own all these different parts of space as well. And then there are these big wars. gosh. Why is everyone at war? So much going on lol.
I have an idea for a cool alliance or whatever thye are called and I am now liking this video game lol. I think I'll stay :) |

There's no massive conflicts of that scope right now. There's skirmishes, but nullsec is pretty quiet, and wormhole space seems to be quieting down too.
There is definitely some *serious* rearming going on, however. Nullsec is on a war footing again in a way it wasn't 12 weeks ago.

Different wars and offensives happen for different reasons. In a sandbox game like Eve, going to war with someone creates content for both sides and that's a good thing. Right now, for example, a newbie group called Pandemic Horde is deploying to the Fade region of null sec to invade the space of SpaceMonkeys Alliance.

It's kinda similar to how you found us. You make a post and see what happens. You join a corp that looks cool and see what happens.
For social experimentation, I would recommend posting in General Discussion, where the trolls are, to build up a bit of flame resistance.
The guide linked by J'Poll is pretty good; I recommend reading it.
Also keep in mind that player corps in this game are created and function in order to achieve some in-game activity, and it takes a bit of effort on the part of the CEO and Directors to organize daily events for the members. So quite a few of the corps will be very... action oriented: Hi. Hi. How are you? Well, today I'm not feeling very well, my cat woke me up and then... Yeah that's nice; can you come to system X? I'm tackled by two guys and they're about to kill me, HELP!
Finally, high-security space is crowded, and pretty much all the PVE activities can be done better solo than in a player group (shared loot, extra taxes). So a lot of the high-sec corps are crappy. The dangers of being attacked in lowsec, null, or wormhole space serve to keep a corp together and its members helping each other, so "dangerous space" corps tend to be better than high-sec corps. Not always, though.
So, decide in general what you want to do, and click the Corp icon in-game, filter the list by your interests, look at the ads, and contact the recruiters for those that seem interesting. This will probably result in joining a small or medium group, who will probably readily accept you and be quite friendly.
Or, you can also apply to join one of the large alliance mass newbie recruitment programs: Pandemic Horde, KarmaFleet, etc... they're organized like schools, and you can "hide" in the crowd of other newbies who've also joined. |

EVE is a social experiment without equal, and it had a single goal, and that was:
To see if people are willing to pay to work a second job, on their own time.
I would say it has been answered splendidly, but like good scientist they want to keep it going as long as possible to see the long term effects. |
