I was thinking.. which isnt' something that comes naturally to me so give me a moment.. that wouldn't it be fun if instead of the straightforward system that combat uses now, fire/wait/fire/wait/fire... why not have certain weapons that do this Fire/fire/fire/wait/wait/wait/wait/fire/fire/fire. Rapid bursts of firing with large waits inbetween. it's actually a different mechanic, I realise that, but wouldn't that change certain things? Those dual/quad/whatever guns that we have, wouldn't it be awesome if it actually fired 2/4/6 times and then had an extra long wait for firing again? I don't mean APPEAR to fire that many times, I litterally mean fire multiple times and have multiple "to hit" rolls. Epic = minnie dread + massive 6 barrel cannons, BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM! one after the other and THEN a pause in firing. Bah, I can't get my idea across and now I seem like an idiot again..

Interesting idea, damage would have to be tweaked accordingly. IE instead of doing the full damage of the gun each individual shot would have to be a third, fourth, whatever. But it could be quite interesting for fleet engagements and the like, where timing a proper barrage would mean something.

It sounds like you're describing an air defense system. A lot of them use a: fire/fire/fire/ wait to see if the target is destroyed/ renew fire sequence if not destroyed, technique.

It does sound like a good idea, with techniques of module activating to get like 32 continuous shots from say, 8 guns, but the cycle time being 4 times as long. Would be great, if for some reason you need to do quick bursts of enormous damage.

Hm, that sounds kind of neat - would give us more options for weapons possibly if you made weapons that had different styles of firing: normal, 3 shot burst, etc... or whatever.
It would definitely give a whole new feeling to PVP too - have some normal firing guns and let them go, then just when the other guy thinks he's tanking it, you let loose with a barrage of hits all quick one after another and finish him off.

Possible implementation would be a module such as the Siege Mode modules on a dread.
Turn it on, Gun ROF changes to 0.5 seconds and then a cooldown.
HUGE alphastrike, LOW dps.
Maybe some sort of nerf to tracking or even better, ship velocity. (same as siege module I guess)

in particular, this should be looked at for minis - i think this would put their philosophy of overwhelming the enemy defense in blobs of dmg back on par for long fights

This could be great if combined with upcoming heat.
A large alpha and risk overheating and damaging your ship (less of a problem with Minmater I'd assume) or spacing out your shooting but risking the enemy remote repping each other back to full health.
This could definitely make large fleet warfare last longer. Maybe.

Yeah, overall lower DPS on the whole would be needed to balance this out (otherwise why wouldn't you use it?) but otherwise it'd be really cool. Hope your omguber volley takes out the ship in one round because you're screwed when it comes to reloading.
On a vaguely similar note - in the interests of cramming tactics down people's throats, what about halving RoF but halving damage too? You end up with the exact same DPS but you have to carry around twice as much ammo and reload twice as often.
Makes cargospace more valuable - possibly to the extent that logistics ships carrying supplies becomes a valid tactic - and introduces reloading as another variable in the 'ole battleplans. Seriously, how often do you come even close to needing to reload in most battles? Gives a nice little pause in the action (in which to panic). ___

I'd prefer if it were kept somewhat realistic - halving damage or making you carry more ammo or blah blah doesn't really make sense. The one person who mentioned implementing this with the heat system is on the right track - you can do a huge alpha strike and get all that dps out real quick, but you risk overheating your weapons (for anyone who played the Mechwarrior games know that using heat as a restriction works perfectly).
If you put too many silly restrictions, it makes using the idea somewhat pointless - and if you think it should be nerfed because "well, how else would we defend against it?!" - maybe some way to overload your shields or resistances for a while, or heck, just start playing differently and adapt (too many people have problems adapting!).

Edited by: Crumplecorn on 06/02/2007 10:33:04 This idea pwns. Unfortunately, AFAIK, hybrids only come in the dual variety.
But still, for the dual guns to actually have 2 turrets and actually fire twice? Win.
Always seemed strange to me that things like battleships only have up to 8 guns to fire. Battlestar Galactica uses railguns and missiles, and they do it right; lots of smaller shots. ----------

There has allways been a certin unreal thing about the weapon systems in Eve.
Gattling guns should fire a stream of projectiles... Dual guns should fire twice.... Large projectile should have a delay....(The BEST gun crew on a RL BS could reload a 16" gun in 25 sec.) Anti Missle systems suck.... It goes on and on...
It has always appeared the Devs never really looked at what they were programming and how it really works.

I have also thought along these lines and I want one more thing for the artillery, one shot in the gun at all times and cut the reload times by 10 seconds...who ever heard of clips with 1,4 meter shells? Make them reload on at a time ---

well rapidly doing that much damage is going to bring back the era of the insta gank and the associated whines
its a good concept but needs some tweaking perhaps make a med slot module that allows you to fire in burst, but nerfs your damage so you end up doing, maybe 30%-50% more damage in total with a 3 round burst, as opposed to a regular salvo without the module cause doing stuff like 100%-300% more damage compared to a regular salvo is going to be waaaay unbalanced
oh and one more thing

Kinda like the idea. Possibly a way to implement it is through a certain 'rig' that allows you to fire multiple salvoes at the expense of greater cap loss maybe.

I like it. I likes it a lot.
I think your suggestion (Benco) applies best to the Artillery modules in the game. High Alpha. And If I remember correctly, most Minmatar pilots cursed the HP buff because it eliminated the Alpha advantage, no? I'd say, make the clips for these guns down to burst size, but reduce reload time for the clip. Have the gun empty the clip in one volley, reload. Have each shot in the burst do diminishing damage, or reverse, each shot in the clip doing more damage, so that when the whole clip hits (simulating great tracking) more BOOM-age.
For the Lasers, I say let quad and dual laser setups fire slightly more often, don't improve damage so much, but do improve tracking. But make it so the intense strain on the crystal burns out the crystal at a more improved rate. Lasers should have the best tracking... because its a beam of light. Heh.
I'm not sure about how to extend this to Blaster designs, I'm not sure if Blasters need a ROF mod or anything along those lines. But Rails could utilize some bonus to dual rail modules. Here's a shot in the dark, but how about Dual-rail modules get a slight boost to ROF and Sig Res at the penalty to damage? Not sure here, needs work.
Last, but certainly not least... Missles. NO BOOST FOR YOU, ONE YEAR!!!. But seriously... how would any of the suggestions here apply to missle ships? Dual warhead missles? Rapid Launch Launcher modules? Do missles need a counter-boost to one applied to guns? Discuss? MORE SHINY, PLEASE!! |

Sureley one way to implement it is to change ammo sizes so that effects teh damage, you can carry more around for you rapid firing bursts etc.
F.ex, The lower tier medium artillery cannon is the 650mm. The mid tier large autocannon is the dual 650. Sureley a dual 650 should take the same size ammo as a singal 650 (what with barrel width being the same). So you'd have to carry twice as much ammo, but your guns fire twice rapidly, then wait while the next 2 shells are loaded into the breach.
Anyway probably still needs some more thought, but I love the idea
