Thanks for the kind words :)
I read and enjoyed the blog post, nice ideas and all... I love reading about the improvements too.. good job guys.

Inovy Dacella wrote:Could this upgrade have anything to do with "socket closed" disconnects I started getting every 10-15 minutes? I can hardly play now. My ISP says my connection is flawless. And my ping test results are excellent.
I had this Problem too. I used my power cables as Network cable, and Eve was Nitpicking on this. As soon as I replace this with a classic direct line networkcable (cat 5 standard) the disconnects (socket Closed) were done for me.
I guess it is something on Eve side that does not react well with your Network / HW setup. Very difficult to solve for CCP in my Opinion. Maybe the BGP is overoptimizeing stuff and causeing this Package loss? ( Eve is the only Game so far that were I had network problems that were Hardware related ... ) |

and for the disappointment ... OK but bear in mind this is needle in a haystack as from what i understand of the issue right now to our logs this appears as graceful client disconnect which is happening in the thousands logging on and off all day
no way to pin point
all this is dependent on a theory which we will focus on
if it turns out to be bogus then we dig deeper i will also talk to our GM's tomorrow and see numbers behind tickets created on client disconnects before and after Tech III
could you send me a private message with your support ticket number for reference
we cant have you not in space blowing up **** !! :) Thanks a lot for looking into that ... it became much worse since the big updates. One pattern is you get discos if some actions start on grid, sometimes after some seconds of lag. Yesterday I got one after undocking, dropping probes and hitting scan in quick succession. Please also look into the much more frequent lag spikes (without TiDi) happening everywhere, also in empty nullsec regions.

Ok we made some changes during this downtime i would truly appreciate if all who were experiencing the 5 minute idle socket closed symptoms to either reply here or feel free to send me a private message ;)
your feedback is crucial to get a better understanding
for the other generic disconnects there are two things right now in motion
1: The automatic BGB re routing solution which we tested while in Telecity will be placed online within 1-2 weeks
2: Better analysis of our logs to pinpoint the root cause of a disconnect is a longer project but its being actively worked on now so the time frame is bit longer on that
i aim to give more frequent updates on the infrastructure improvements now since we can clearly see you appreciate the hardware dev blogs :)
so more of that !

The old Everest node from TQ Tech II, did this use a Xeon X5698 or was it something even faster? I have a vague memory of a fanfest stream from around 3-4 years ago about the most powerful node that had a processor covered by an NDA at the time. |

It was the X5698, correct. We got it super early from what I remember and that was the reason for the NDA

I was always curious about it. I dread to think what that must have cost at the time, funny to think they can be had for under -ú200 on eBay these days Is there anything secret in TQ Tech III? |

It has been a while, but I just moments (~18:10 EVE time) ago had a socket closed in EMIG-F, Tenerifis region, while my alt in Amarr remained stable and logged in in Amarr. Are there some kind of crash reports or crash dumps that I can send to CCP or does a bug report from in the game still capture the events from before a closed client?

I see. Somehow I got this thought that you moved the servers to Iceland. But thinking about it, putting your important datacenter infrastructure near live volcano is a pretty bad idea. |

Ok guys some feedback has been sent but can the pilots who were experiencing the on the dot 5 minute idle disconnect confirm if that's still the case or not
we could not reproduce that our self's so if you had that happening AFTER Monday 29th and it has stopped now could you confirm that ?
the random socket disconnects is another matter which is being looked into but they are two different matters so we need to know if our change on Friday helped |

It appears that going idle does increase the socket close. I tested several times with 2 accounts and they disconnected within about 5 -10 minutes quite consistently. But it also happens when I'm active too, although not as frequent. However, before the server upgrade I had only a few disconnects throughout the past year, which is quite normal. Now it always happens sooner or latter every time I log in.
I'm not sure if the changes on Friday helped. It did seem to improve on Sunday, but it doesn't seem different today (Monday 14.03.2016). Could play time and server load have an effect? Or is it random? |

no that would be different issue
the specific disconnect after exactly 5 min is not the case
server load is not an issue specially not with the network
we continue to debug the random disconnects ;) |

Yesterday no disconnect during about 6h active play ... today disco a couple of minutes after undock while my drones were busy killing a rat, started with lag, then socket close. My drones were back in the bay after relog, I recalled them when the hit notifications suddenly started to stutter, but got socket close before the client confirmed this visually.

Very interesting read, refreshing with a dev team that's open and honest about problems and being this detailed about what's happening. Makes for good reading and with a background in IT i can appreciate the complexities of this kind of upgrade. Fascinated about why something this critical runs in a windows environment, but i'm sure it's for a good reason =)

I just had 2 disconnects by socket closed in Lonetrek and neither character was idle at all. Both were warping or orbiting a gate with a timer. In fact, being idle in station has prevented socket closed disconnects in the past for me (but not for others, I've been told). So far, I only have socket closed disconnects when I am in space.
