So. I havent seen any threads like this that DIRECTLY discuss this game
^_^ im so excited. 4 years in waiting. And its being released NEXT MONTH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!
And right in time with me getting a new gaming-dedicated computer, high end, which should run it beautifully.
these are the System Reqs, but usually these arent enough to run it at a DECENT quality. So what are the expected stats that everyone will be wanting to run this baby :) with ultra sweet graphics.
I already plan for a 2GB DDR2 ram, and a Geforce 8800 graphix card, which can support DX10
PC Processor Type Intel« Pentium« 4 processor or equivalent PC Processor Speed 2.4GHz PC Operating System Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista PC System Memory 512MB RAM PC Hard Drive Space 4GB PC Video 64MB DirectX 8.0b-compatible video card PC Sound Card Sound card PC Modem 56.6 Kbps PC Additional Requirements Internet service required to access online features

I'm on the bandwagon. Love the original book of Strugatsky brothers (Roadside picnic) and when I found out years ago that they are making game of it (or at least on that theme), have been "stalking" this game ever since. Well, it doesn't come out with all the nifty features they wanted to implement but well... nothing to do. Preordered Collectors Edition already

I hope they don't drop out at the last second getting it's vaporware status even higher.

I hope the RAM and graphics card isn't all you're adding to that list, cuz that's a horrible rig .
On topic though, I been really looking forward to STALKER for ages now, it's almost hard to believe it's finally coming out. The graphics etc. aren't actually fantastic, but I don't care tbh, theyre adequate and the textures seem to portray the gritty, run-down nature of the area very well, I just hope it manages to be open ended and free without being mind-numbingly boring like Oblivion was.

haha well. Im also gonna have a Core 2 Duo attached to it. And IMO,the 8800s are next-gen tech and should run STALKER smoothly.
:( too bad Stalker is run on the XRAY engine and not like Source or Unreal, so the water effects supposidly wont be all that great

2 Years ago it looked like a dream, and then they pushed the date of release by like a year, twice.
Always been a fan of post-apocalyptic enviroments though and still looking forward to this so very much, it's some consolidation for the third fallout that never arrived.
Also, hoping the Co-op is as good as suggested, the lack of such games lately is dire. Oblivion, as someone mentioned could've been a whole other story with MP support.

Fixed.
Stalker was announced for a 2003 release date originally, right next to HL2, but the game got delayed because the publisher pulled out. A year ago they found a new one and have been tweaking the game for release, but i wouldn't be so optimistic untill i have the game in my hands.

Well now its "out" 6 years in the making and half the features gones :/
SP is impressive at first glance untill you realise that 1400's trying to pop a 7k a sec inty at 2k are more accurate then most the weapons.
Its based on realism so rainbow 6 ect combat yet it takes 15 rounds from an assault in the chest to down someone :/
Its very linear now the map is impressive but you cant go anywhere and money seems useless :/
AI is good though, but enermies just respawn like serious sam and you keep getting hordes of enermies coming after you :/ and they take more bullets to kill then you do.
At least no crashs on xp at least and seems to run smooth.
To much hype on what could have been a great game with all the develpopement type and promises :/
Maybe they will patch the weapon accuracy/damage and it will be worth playing and not just becoming frustrated as hell over :/
Thats my opinion of it after playing it for awhile.

The problem was PCG themeselves, they spent so long in so many previews hyping it up for themselves, that when they got the final copy it didnt get up to their sky high expectations..

No, the reviewer (Kieron Gillen) is rather respected for his fair and just reviews (he freelances a lot, and lives in the same city as me). He said in his review that it was silly to expect the game that they wanted to deliver, because what they wanted was the perfect game, and it would of been almost impossible to achieve that. What let the review down was the games shortness, and several other small areas, like the graphics engine - it was meant to be high-tech, and such, but instead it's just a run of the mill engine, that hardly stands up to todays games.
I just finished the game, and I can completely understand why it got 86% in their review. When you finish it, you'll understand exactly what I mean :/.
Oh, and the multiplayer alpha has been out for about a year or two now, hence why wierchas has probably had it. It's all over the warez sites. --- Cache Clearer |

The story's very so-so (so far), and the combat is fairly unforgiving. The game does scale well though, it runs fps smooth on my 9800pro. There's a detachment from the characters and the storyline.

Just wondering, whats the rest of your system likes, and what settings do you run it at?
I want to buy it, but dont really want to play through a lagfest

The game is complete crap tbh. Interface is buggy. Missions are buggy. Animations tend to "lag" a bit. The controls seem sluggish and detached (hard to explain). Large areas with no means of transportation. Weapon model (ie. damage, recoil and such) is annoying. More RPG elements kthnx.
Alot of small things that really should have gone out in the x years they have had to develop this thing. I don't mind small bugs or that everything isnt completely polished, but this is too much.
Budget title.

And i was hoping for another Deus Ex (the first, good one that is lol) The weapon complaints reminds of DE though.. always felt they were completly unbalanced/screwed up

I got a dispatched order from Amazon and I was like ôI didnĆt order anything! ö
Then I realize its Stalker! Took a look back at my emails and I had ordered this back in early 2004!
Reminds me of when Half Life 2 was being released heh..

Static lighting, medium quality.
AMD 2500+ Barton, 1GB ram, 9700pro. This thing was a monster when I got it. 1GB of ram was unheard of back then, it's the equivalent of 4GB today.
It runs perfectly smooth and lag free.

I got it off of bit torrent a few days ago, the weapons kinda suck till you get the modded AK, pump out 30 rounds in like 1.5 seconds. Then you get the sniper scope mod and attach it to it and it's on like donkey kong.
I'm trapped in the "get the documents" mission, I got the keycode for the second level, go through the door, get the documents, come back and the door is sealed shut. There's a bunch of tracking anomlies that chase you around shooting fire at you and I can't get out. Fear the Ibis of doom!

Cant say I'm entirely surprsied by the negative responses here and elsewhere. Games never live up to their hype, even HL2 had its dissapointments and GSC did themselves no favours by spending 5 years on it and releasing a cut down version that was missing half the features that were used to pimp the game wiht in the first place.
That said, I recieved my copy today and I'm having jolly good fun with it.
I'm going to compare it to Call of Cthulhu: DCOTE in terms of gameplay etc, its a great game *if* you are prepared to overlook the glitches and other issues that tarnish it somewhat.
Mind you, I'm currently having some really frustrating framerate issues during storms with full dynamic lighting. Seems alot of people with high end cards are having the same kind of trouble, no way I want to drop it down to static but im dreading my first zone blowout -

I just got onto the mission where you have to steal doccuments from an underground lab. I go in, theres a skeleton when I turn on my light. A STALKER's body lies on the floor dead. I search it and get a Scientist medpack \o/. I move down some stairs, and as I do I hear a huge 'KLANG!' I see at the bottom of the stairs there is only a pitch black corridor. I quicksave and exit. I've noticed a few things like that, it seems a good few of these issues vary with different computer setups. I havent had any serious problems but hopefully they'll get round to releasing a patch soon. -

Stalker is freaking awesome, it's absolutoely nothing like I thought it would be, but is pretty damn good all the same.
Sure, it's a tad buggy, but it's still fun getting the lay of the land and generally exploring before the patch is released.
It's a great challenge and a welcome change from the usual 'guns a blazing' FPS.

Got it on release and its so far great. I've just saved some guy and stumbled on the AK. For those complaining about bugs, problems etc after a good 7-10hours of single play and 4-6 of multiplay, I haven't experienced a single lockup, crash, problem or anything.
I have graphics full whack, hell it even defaulted them to full bar AA / view distance. And I don't get any lag or problems whilst playing, its far from the most detailed game (HL2 and before comes to mind) but at the same time, the graphics you do retain are still good quality.
I like the 'rpg' elements they've introduced, it gives you plenty more to do other than, go there, shoot this, next room (doom/quake). Only pain in the ass, is completing a few missions running back to base, handing them in then running all the way back to zone2/3.
For those that dislike it, try and keep it constructive! Same goes for those who do like it, why do you dis/like it :) Give something for people to get their teeth into to better understand what their trying to buy.
Personally, I think its great, its far from one of the best FPS out, but the concept brings something new to the FPS arena.
As for my rig 3.800+ AMD Athlon 64 1gb(2x512) 7950GX2 1gb(2x512)DDR2-8000 Crucial Memory.
An for those buying 8800's, All i can do is point and laugh, they maybe 'next-gen' but their already being pushed to one side by Nvidia as Microsoft let slip about DX10.1 which make 8800's hardware that run on 10.0 obselete before they even get off the ground...

WOW! Now i know how to rebind the quick load/save keys, now perhaps you can tell me how that helps the whole "crashes every 2 minutes" problem? Frankly I'm stumped as to how the hell you thought that would help. All that does is help me loose less progress every time the game crashes and I have to reboot the computer. I just completed it, probably spent around 20 hours doing a fair bit of exploring.
And not a single crash in all that time.
The only bug I ever encountered (very rarely) was my character 'icon' sometimes not appearing on the map on my PDA, so I couldn't see where I was.

I havn't had a single crash so far after several hours of play, had a little stuttery bit for a while but that passed. I will reccomend this to all my friends.

Edited by: Letri Bimmet on 28/03/2007 20:30:28 It's a pretty sweet game.
The overall look of the game isn't amazing but it fits the gritty and worn-out style of the game. I really like the shadows when you walk/run around with your flashlight on. And the lighting...flashes of light...you can see dogs running in the distance during the flashes. Pretty sweet.
The Character animations are also quite good...haven't found anything specific that amazed me or struck me as wrong. The AI....well it varies between brainless swarms charging at you (the blind dogs and other critters) and the humans running and hiding. Tho the human AI seemed to be more about staying at range and croutching on one place. They do move around...but not as much as I've liked. I liked it tho that packs of dogs and other beasts would go out hunting and attack stalkers or mercs. It adds something...real and dynamic to the game world.
The weapons...ah...lovely. The first time I picked up a machinegun with a scope I was like...wow o_0 It fills up alot of your screen...but that's the way I like my guns Reminded me of the machinegun in systemshock 2 (one of my fav weapons of all time) Overall the details on the guns are pretty low but as i said before...it fits the worn-out style of the game. The blasts and sounds made by the guns are impressive....what else can I say;)
The outdoor scenes were great...lot's of grass and little details around. Tho some area's had alot of the same anomalies. A little more variation would be nice
The indoor scenes. DARK...SPOOKY, tho not really scary...Exiting would be more fitting. As far as I've seen indoor fights are rare...it's more about building up to that one big fight. *wich I really like Lots of detail inside...broken walls...cigs left on the table...stuff like that, really cool:)
Sound...great. It adds to the spooky feel inside and to the grand feel outside. Tho some of the background sounds were kinda repeating after a wile, but they arn't annoying thankfully. They add a little flavour to the lonelyness of the outside.
I haven't encounted any crashes or what so ever. Tho I had the problem of grafical artifacts appearing during the rain on my first walk into the game. Tho they seem to have dissapeared now. I have found a few missions in wich I got stuck, wich was kinda annoying. Maybe I missed a event trigger or something. I should really go back and try to finish those ones.
My rig: AMD FX 4200+ Geforce 8800GTS Corsair 2gig RAM onboard sound and then the usual...you know..hard drives and such Every setting maxed and it runs like a dream (wich means great) haven't been able to check my fps tho...
Roundup The game isn't groundbreakin or anything...it's a good shooter with some nice RPG elements thrown into it. The fact that you can only carry 2 or 3 guns and some supplies will make you think twice about picking up another gun or a new type of ammo. It add depth into the game rarely seen in other games I've played. The story isn't really clear to me atm. Still need to find that stalker and kill him...but for what reason? Would be nice if they told me more about the stalker I need to kill. Add a little background into him and his friends.
I haven't finished the game yet tho but I'm giving it 9/10 so far:)

It seems a vast majority of the storyline is revealed through text in your PDA (that the game gives you no indication that it's updating). Make sure to check your Diary/Log entries and the Encylopedia and read them thoroughly. ---------------------------------------- Space-Slacker |

Edited by: The Armin on 28/03/2007 21:06:46 MEh very dissapointed in this game tbh. The first thirty minutes or so I went omg omg omg omg but after that -.-
My missions are buggy, whatever job I chose doesn't matter, and I can't rearrange priorities in my PDA. The game sorta chooses wich mission locations it sets the arrow to. So if I ever do a sidequest I have to check the PDA for directions all the time. Annoying.
Also the graphics is meh. First I had everthing on max, noticed lag, set it to low, but it still lagged roughly the same, so just put it on max again with static lightning, wich helped some but not all that much.
Wait for the patches and/or mods before you start playing this game.

So how does this game compare to FEAR then? I thought FEAR was superb as a shooter and a scary one at that. From the above posts there seems to be a bit of a divide between lovers & haters, with a general agreement that there's bugs aplenty and harsh PC spec requirements. After 6 years of waiting I don't have any enthusiasm for Stalker but may be tempted. It might be enough to keep me going till BioShock comes out! -------------

Finished! <<<SPOILER WARNING>>>
I knew I had to get rid of my money so I bought a Exosqueleton from the Freedom trader of wich I joined. I fight for the Zone, not against it yehhh!
But I had 50K ruble left and when I touched the wishmaker, I wanted to be rich. Right back at me. The roof fell on me. lovely.
So, I gotta do less sidequests eh? What did you made em for then?
FINAL THOUGHTS: This had to be the best game I've ever played singleperson. The atmospher is so good. From the beginning where the freaky little sounds put you off. And at the nearly end where you start to see ghosts. When everything turns yellow and you start seeing ghosts, that's when you know, you're in The Zone. The atmosphere is so intense, graphics are descent, and action never far away. I'd recommend this game to everyone who's into FPSes wih a RPG touch.

Well i played this game for 20 minutes last night and i doubt i'll ever touch it again. Ok yeah it has pretty good graphics, even with everything on full it ran smooth and that was pretty neat. Sure its got big wide open areas you can explore and stuff but my god the combat system is poo. Shooting enemies, killing them, them falling over and just the way they move reminds me of games that were out 2 years ago. Weapon textures seem poor. Can someone please tell me whats the big deal with this game, have i missed something? Reminds me a bit of Oblivion.

Well I love this game, it's something I've been waiting for since I played Deus Ex for the first time. I never followed development for the game much so I had no expectations going into it and what it does have is amazing. A wide open post-apocalyptic world to romp around in, a nice realistic system juxtaposed with the deeply supernatural elements of the 'Zone' make it feel Lovecraftian in a way, and the atmosphere is just amazing (especially in the abandonned cities) and you can definately see all the work they put in to making the environments by traveling to the real 'Zone' (strangely enough it is actually called that in real life too) to take pictures for the various areas of the game. On e of the best games I've had the pleasure of playing in a while, and a refreshing challenge to boot. ---------------------

That's what I got. I was just wondering if maybe I had missed something because it made absolutely no sense to me relative to the game.
I guessed the Strelok thing from the cutscenes, but got to the end with the mission still in my PDA. It's uninstalled now so I can't experiment...after breaking my RAID array twice and crashing even more times (with everything on low & EAX off) I think it'll stay that way! -------------
